Tried the gumbo at lunch. It was alright, but I've had better. The shrimp was overcooked, and the spices were too subtle. It didn't leave a lasting impression. Just okay.

I was so excited to try their gumbo and ordered two dishes--the veggie and the seafood gumbo--totaling around $52. The veggie gumbo was good, but the seafood gumbo was a huge disappointment. For $32-$35, they served imitation crab--seriously? I called to request a refund, only to be told they don't offer refunds. The owner's son even said I should have asked for real crab, as if I somehow knew they were serving fake seafood! I will never go back, and I definitely won't be recommending this place.

Nitas gumbo on 81st stony island just disappointed me so bad. The Gumba was extremely salty , crab meat was more like noodles, and the shrimp was barely done. i recommend a new chef or new recipe ...that gumbo is terrible.

This is a pic of the seafood gumbo after I added my own crab meat at home. It was supposed to come with crab but there was none.

Heard about this place a long while ago and decided to give them a try recently. Their gumbo here is the alleged "showstopper ". The interior is small so you might want to order ahead. I ordered the Nitas Special which was supposed to come with crab, shrimp, chicken, and sausage. The roux/sauce base was very flavorful and I got everything that was included except for....the crab. Not one leg, piece of meat....NOTHING. So me being me, when I got home and noticed the discrepancy, I cooked a crab cluster I had in the freezer, and I added the meat to my supposed seafood gumbo. VOILA!!!! .....long story short, if crab is no longer included, don't charge for it and let the customer know. Other than that, the gumbo was very flavorful and hearty.

Nita's is takeout only. If you want to dine in and with a larger menu, you can try their restaurant in Country Club Hills. Their customer service was great and even called me by name when I arrived. I ordered their five piece gumbo wings, and two of their Nitas Signature Gumbo bowls. Their gumbo wings, were tasty and even had a kick. It even came with gumbo rice which was also tasty. The Gumbo entree came with rice on the side as well as the crab meat. The bowl itself came with shrimp, chicken, and chicken andouille sausage. These bowls are pretty pricy, but you do get filled up. The roux for the gumbo was full of flavor but did taste a little salty for my taste. Overall the food was good, but just too damn far away to say I would come here often. I'll try and look for gumbo closer to home, and compare then.

I have had them bookmarked for 2yrs. Everytime I think about coming they're closed. FINALLY on the south side, at a decent hour I stopped by. I ordered the gumbo wings and classic Anita gumbo. Took about 15-20mins to prepare my food. There are no tables to dine in. So I ate mine in my car. Gumbo wings are different. Basically it's a smothered gumbo chicken wing. Really unique find. I've never heard of anything like this. They came in a mild or spicy, I requested spicy, but i think I was given mild. I was glad I was feeling daring and tried them. The gumbo was good and flavorful, but it didn't stand up to the price tag. I would go back, but probably just for the gumbo wings.

Seafood gumbo...good flava! Not spicy like i Was told, i even added Tabasco! Worth trying will be back

Doesn't even taste like gumbo. It's literally just roux and meat. I would not recommend. I am very disappointed.

They're gumbo could have been better and they should not just use gumbo sauce to season they're wings ....a little salt etc goes a long way.

Ask the Community - Nita's Gumbo

Is the Stony Island location still open? I have tried to go twice and they were closed.

Look at their days and hours on Yelp. Also with the holidays maybe it was adjusted . Call their phone to ask and see before going . They're still there . Also they have a Groupon deal which is great.

When we went in there isn't anywhere to really sit and when you walk in you wouldn't think greatness come from there but boy was I wrong. We ordered and we were told it would be about 20-30mins. So while we waited to went to a few other stores. The gentleman at the counter was very nice and friendly I was confused on what flavor I should get and I asked could I do 3 flavors and he told me what ever I want. I ordered the 1lb crab and 1/2 lb shrimp with Lemon Pepper, Old Bay and Cajun. When we received the food we checked it and it smelled so good and I didn't know it came with Corn, Potatoes and Broccoli. Once I made it home my food was warm at no fault to them just I had a few errands to run before making it home. Even being warm it was still amazing. My favorite part was the Broccoli. I could have a whole pan of that alone. But EVERYTHING was amazing. Price Point was average for Seafood and you already I want to try something new or different the next time I go because I will be back.

I've been here several times and had one bad experience. I think and hope it was just a bad day…read more Good and fresh veggies cooked just right. I hate mushy-overcooked. Shrimp was a little overcooked; but I know it's hard not to overcook shrimp.

This black owned business has above average standing room in the waiting area, two TVs and an ATM with a good amount of seats/benches. Seems like it might've been an old chinese food joint with a few tables, but they opted for a pure takeout experience (which is unfortunately the trend nowadays.) Since it was my first time I thought I'd try both the fish and chicken combo along with the dirty rice. The total came out to be $24 with the wait being about 15 minutes. The staff overall were nice.      After leaving the place and checking the food. I realized that the combo dinner didn't contain a roll and coleslaw like advertised which was kind of disappointing. It did have the fries though. The requested lemon pepper was there, but they also seasoned the chicken/catfish with garlic powder, salt and parsley which is fine. Everything was fried hard, but not dry which creates the perfect pleasurable crunch. The chicken and fish tasted better than a lot of the restaurants in the area with the fish having a lightness to the breading that's sorely missed. Some of the chicken was weirdly tough though as if it was slightly undercooked.      Speaking of misses we have to talk about the dirty rice. Dirty rice is one of those dishes that seems like it either is absolute perfection or an abomination with no in-between. This unfortunately falls into the latter with it not only looking boring with all brown notes, but the initial taste as well as texture being an off putting creamy rancid trip to flavor hell. After a just a few bites my stomach turned which does not bode well for this dish. I have no idea what went wrong here, but it seems like it may have been sitting out too long. Even the smell was a bit rancid. At least it has a good ratio of ground beef to rice which a lot of places skimp on. They also attempted to add in some vegetables like peppers although they are barely noticeable.       Overall Surf's up is a good spot with friendly staff, decent prices, but some issues with quality. My advice is to make sure the cooking temps are correct and consistent. Definitely make sure if food is sitting idle, that it is kept at the mandatory minimum of 140 degrees farenheit to avoid it going rancid so quickly. Also, double check the orders before sending them out or edit the menu if it is outdated.

I made sure to get a half pound of each of their Crown Jewels- the smoked salmon and the smoked shrimp. I also tacked on a small side of fries with some ketchup and hot sauce. While the shrimp was fairly solid and certainly had the subtle smoky flavor present, it didn't blow me away quite like the salmon did. That was that the best smoked salmon I've ever had in my life, I just couldn't get enough of it. No idea how they possibly pack so much flavor into every single bite, but I left nothing behind. I can still smell the smoky savory flavor, and will certainly be getting the salmon every time I come back. The piping hot fries were delicious as well, especially after plopping down my meal on a bench outside in the 20 degree weather to scarf everything down at once. Service was great as well- had some questions about what was offered and they were happy to answer everything and make recommendations. Would go back for sure.
