-1 for the cold atmosphere... it's like we were almost eating outside Otherwise the butter naan which I've never had anywhere else was perfectly airy and had a nice chew. The chicken was delicious and perfectly spiced. Almost like a tikka masala. And the drinks were really good too! Tried the curry margarita and the one with coconut cream. Good balance to have both... cause curry margarita was spicy! Will come again and bring others to try. read more

As a Bay Area native who's had to eat Indian food for practically his entire life (because I'm Indian, duh), I can confidently say this was the best thing I ate. I've never said "goddamn" that much. See, this place executes Indian food properly. I'll give them that. However, they go one above by introducing the people to flavors they don't typically get. Screw butter chicken and samosas, try this hara bara tikki. Then speaking with Oliver was nice. I think that shows a lot about the restaurant's commitment to service. He also took the time to explain the reasoning behind pork vindaloo; how it was the original before the British came along and switched it to Lamb. For ambiance, it was nice but the place has a few homeless people. That's just unfortunate placing so I don't blame them. Overall, the place excels in executing Indian food, introducing new flavors, and having good service. read more

Food was okay. Nothing extraordinary. South indian food is not their forte for sure. But north indian food is fine.

Nirmals was an incredible experience! The reservation process through yelp was super easy and my coworkers and I were excited. We got the chicken and veggie appetizers and all the flavors were very well blended. The staff was very helpful in picking the entrees and som complementary sides. My favorite was the goat biriyani- Very scrumptious and the rice and meat were very aromatic. 10/10 for food, ambience and courteous staff. read more

I booked a reservation for 2 at 5:30pm Tuesday, right when they open, as I was craving some spice-heavy food to build back up my immunity. First impression was poor - for a relatively upscale Indian restaurant, they sat us in an area where the bench was dirty - but they did clean it up for me after seeing it. We ordered Paneer Amritsari for appetizer and shared the Rogan Josh (lamb curry) with garlic naan and Dungeness crab curry with rice. It was a nice touch that we were able to request for garlic naan even though the menu only shows choices of rice, roti, or naan, and we did not get charged extra for it. We also got mango lassi and sweet lassi (regular yogurt flavor) for drinks. We were first given some chips with cilantro chutney and tamarind sauce which sets up the mood for the upcoming food. Chutney was a bit watery but it held itself well as I dipped the chips in. The paneer is pretty solid, though a little bit burnt. The arrangement is kind of like a kebab as each paneer is separated by either onion or bell pepper. It was a little filling in itself, but it was well executed. Flavor is a bit subtle though, in comparison to the spices and grilled vegetables. The Rogan Josh was alright. Some parts of the lamb shank are way too tough, but some are very tender. I am not too much of a fan of this dish as the lamb was a bit too gamey, but the spices they put in make the curry itself an excellent dip for the naan. The Dungeness crab curry, although a lot more expensive than literally 3 months ago ($58, which is $13 higher), was well worth the price. I wished they added the crab shell for the picture, but the richness of the curry implies that they did add all the contents of the crab shell into the curry. The curry is very rich and doubles as an entree in itself, on top of crab legs that have sufficient and fresh meat. Given it is a whole crab, you cannot really pay much less than that for such a well executed dish. Due to limited availability, I recommend a close-to-opening reservation time to ensure you are able to get this dish. While some of the experience was lacking for a restaurant of this ambience and price point, it was a nice gesture when the manager(?) of the restaurant complimented and said that he was impressed I was able to eat the crab without using my hands - just teeth and fork. It shows that they are attentive to service - like water refills (I wasn't even noticing they refilled) so this makes up the poor first impression of this place. Because we ordered appetizer and some of the pricier dishes, after tax and tip, it came close to $80 per person, but I will definitely do it again for another occasion. read more

Over and over I've heard this is the best Indian food in the city and now I can be one of the people that can affirm it's delicious. Not the most sustainable Indian food choice in the city given it's price point, but on a pure taste basis, wow it packs a punch. We got the vada pav (first time having it - piping hot, both crunchy and fluffy, plenty of flavor on it's own but also great with chutney), a stuffed jalapeno (a bit heavy, seasonal and can't find the menu to recall the name), a chicken drumstick curry (SO tender, meat falls right off the bone, also seasonal), goat biryani (most flavorful biryani I've ever had, they popped the dish open tableside), and tropical ice cream (chikoo ice cream - very nutty, creamy, but also a bit fruity - definitely tropical!) read more

We went there again and it was another day of good food and good experience. P.S -The staff, the chef and the owner, they all know how to do good hospitality. Does Nirmal's allow good doggos? Outside dining wasn't available when we went. Might be available on warmer days. Nirmal's offers modern Indian cuisine in Seattle's Pioneer Square. We were impressed with their great food, excellent service, and cozy atmosphere. Our server, Yogi, offered us amazing introduction to the menu and recommendations. We started off with Vana Pav, which is a Mumbai street food. The house made soft bun went perfectly well with batter fried spiced potato patty. The whole slider was light (not greasy at all) and full of flavor. Add some chutney sauce and fresh onion. Then we ate the Khatte Baingan, which is egglants cooked in a tart tamarind and cumin sauce. We also ordered the pork vindaloo. The pork cubes marinated in malt vinegar were so tender. Homemade ground spice, green chilis and garlic combined presented a spicy and well balanced dish. Both were savory and paired well with basmati rice and garlic naan. Khatte baingan and pork vindaloo were rich in flavor but not creamy, which are perfect for those with lactose intolerance. To finish off, we ordered the chikoo and turmeric ginger ice cream, both made in house. I especially enjoyed the chikoo ice cream which offered a subtle caramel scent with nutty flavor. Not too sweet and delicious. We paired our meal with Taj Mahal lager beer and Smith Kung Fu Girl Riesling from Washington. Nirmal's offered a dining experience not available in too many Indian restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. Even though the restaurant was packed, Yogi was extremely attentive and offered excellent service. read more

Delicious meal with so many exotic flavors and spectacular service. Our waiter made our night just a little more special. Very nice man who was invested in our lives. Offered to take our picture - his idea. Asked what we were doing after dinner. Just a really nice man! My favorite dish was what he recommended. It's basically a different version of butter chicken. We got that too. Both were so phenomenal with bits of black licorice we are guessing. You'd bite into it and it'd be this crazy flavor. So fun. We also got the pork tandoori which was my least favorite. Very watery soup and some of the pork had lots of fat on it. Not my fav. The huge brick wall is fun to look at. Nice lighting. Spacious. Such a great visit! read more

Nirmal's is phenomenal. My husband and I had our post-courthouse-wedding-ceremony dinner there with 14 people and Nirmal's was so accommodating!! We made the reservation in advance, of course, and they were happy to host us. We had people in our group that are vegans, some meat-eaters, and multiple with serious allergies. Those with allergies contacted the restaurant ahead of time to ask questions and the head chef answered all of our questions and even made special dishes for those who couldn't do anything on the menu!!! No one with dietary restrictions had any problems with the food they served us. Service was fantastic and the chef and owner/manager both came out to chat with us and check on us and how we were doing / if we liked the food / needed anything multiple times. I can't recommend them enough. Oh, and--The food was DELICIOUS!!! I see why their head chef has so many accolades. It was served so nicely in classy dishware, such as a beautiful mini copper pot for the biryani. Great cocktails and mocktails too. Go here! read more

Most authentic Bombay street food. The owner is from Bombay and knows the authentic taste very well. I have tried vada pav in the most popular east side restaurants but nothing compares vada pav at Nirmal's. Their Misal pav is very authentic too and spicy :) I have tried most things on the menu and everything is delicious and freshly made. Highly recommend. PS: their pav is not sweet and tastes so much like Bombay pav. read more

had dinner with friends at Nirmal's last night, and what a treat! Since their menu and recipes are more imaginative and well-described than most Indian restaurants, we asked Oliver to guide us through a selection of dishes. These included two curries, a mustard green dish and an eggplant dish, two street food selections, finishing with a standout chocolate cake with homemade sapote ice cream. Oliver described how they bake their own bread and make their own yoghurt every night. It was all spectacular. This is the best Indian food in Seattle; it's going to be our go-to place. read more

Excellent spot for a fancier Indian dinner. Everything we tried here pops with spice and comes well presented. We started off ordering the Hara Bara Tikki fritters, which were crispy, flavorful and great with the provided chutneys. For our mains, we got the Yellow Daal Tadka and the Bharwan Simla Mirch. The daal was spot on and well-balanced with all its spices. It even had a bit of chili oil to give it a bit of zing, which was nice with roti on the side. The Bharwan Simla Mirch was an interesting stuffed pepper dish that I've never tried elsewhere before. The spicy tomato sauce was a little sweeter than I expected but the peppers were packed with a delicious mix of veggies and paneer. read more

They have a set lunch tray which includes rice, naan, a chicken or vegetable curry, a lentil or bean curry and another vegetable curry and a dessert. Very affordable and great amount of food. They also have drinks like mango lassi and tea but the server didn't give us a menu. I looked at photos before going and was expecting to order but it was a pleasant surprise when we sat down and go the options, easy to order and quick service. I was looking for recommended Seattle restaurant week places and Nirmal's was claimed as one of the best Indian restaurant's in Seattle. Looking at the array of items they offer for SRW we had to try it out! For the appetizer we ordered the samosa's. The samosa's on their own lacked flavor but the sauce that they came with tied the dish together really well. We also ordered their chicken appetizer and that was amazing. The chicken was moist, tender, and seasoned so well! For the entree we went with the Chicken Murgh Patiala and Nizami Goat Curry. The Chicken Murgh Patiala was sooo good! The chicken was cooked very well and the sauce was amazing! The spices were not too overpowering and this dish fell on the sweeter side. The Nizami Goat Curry was a bit spicy, but the Goat was cooked very well! As the description says be careful of the bones roaming around the dish. Overall, really enjoyed both entrees. However, my friend and I did feel a bit sick maybe from the oil of these dishes. I'm not sure if it was just that day or if it's just something our stomaches are sensitive too so just be aware ! For dessert we ordered split the Ras Malai and Gulab Jamun. The Ras Malai was really good and it reminded me of rice pudding. It has a rose water taste to it and the rice cake had a surprising texture. The Gulab Jamun was a bit sweet for me and I really like sweet items. The syrup the sweets were in was way too overpowering but the sweet had a nice soft texture. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. They decorated it very well with all the lights, and the sun shined through the open windows. The service was amazing! The waiter was super helpful with what items to order on the menu. The waiter was also very friendly came to fill up on water often and check if we needed anything. There are so many good restaurants in pioneer square, but usually don't try to come here at night since it is not the safest area, which is unfortunate but works during the summer or day light hours. Overall, I would not come here again based on the location, price, and the stomach bug I might have gotten from their dishes. However, service and atmosphere are fantastic and the dishes taste great! read more

Nirmal's is located in Pioneer Square, and the interiors definitely give that away. It's a rustic, but modern look, high ceilings, and great ambiance. That being said, seating is minimal. We came here in a group of 4, and got some drinks, appetizers, and mains. Here were standouts: - Vada pav: 10/10, this was piping hot, the patty was crispy, and the pav seemed homemade! - Misal pav: 8:10, this was nice, but got cold fast. Very flavorful, and again, the buns were delicious, fluffy, and soft! - Bharwan Simla Mirch: 9/10, pleasantly surprised with how much I liked this dish! The bell pepper remained a bit crunchy, which I liked, and the stuffing was flavorful. We all left feeling very full and it felt like the best comfort food for a rainy day in Seattle. I will say, prices are on the higher side, so although I enjoyed the food, this will have to be for special occasions only :) read more

Love it! Wanted to try something different and saw this place on Yelp so decided to give it a try. Spicy level is acceptable for people who don't normally eat spicy. Pav Bhaji 4/5 It comes w/ 2 buns but forgot to take picture before start eating. The bun is good compare to every where else I had. The sauce which is mixed vege is good too. Just it's more like regular mixed vege thick soup and as street foods $14 may seem a bit too much. However it's in Seattle not street food you get in Mumbai. Hara Bara Tikki 4-5/5 Fried mixed veges. Nice appetizers before the main dish. Nizami Goat Curry with Garlic Naan 4/5 It's good. I actually expected thick curry but this turned out more like soup? That why I gave it 4 but some people may love it this way. :) 2 appetizer 1 main dish for 2 people and we were so full that we were thinking to go. Over all it's good. Definitely want to go back for other items! Hope these information are helpful! read more

I really do not know where to start the review. we spent $1200 for Team dinner (Group of 12, south/north Indians). we ordered almost every item on the menu thinking that at least we can find one tasty food item, but everyone failed to at least one! - Fish Fry: Too salty. maybe they dumped salt and chili powder top of fish. No one felt they are tasting fish fry. We had returned the ordered fish fry, which never came back fixed - Chicken lollypops: this is another disaster food item. No salt and no taste. It's just raw chicken dipped in batter and fried. This is Zero taste. - vada pav: we can play baseball with vada. I really felt we need send this guys to India to train on cooking. - Tandoori Chicken: Same as Fish fry. Salty and with lots of chili powder. Salty means its not just salty, you have to drink a large glass of water to get rid of saltness from your testbeds - Chicken Angare/ Afghani Chicken Sheekh Kebab: I do not remember which item we ordered in these two. But after eating this dish, I could recollect my school days (eating rubber erasers). I am sorry, I can't describe this item taste and still I am googling to find some words for tasteless food. - Samosa: only fried at top, may be they forgot to cook inside. We had to eat only samosa shells. - Broccoli: I am sorry, I can't describe this item taste as I am speechless - Nizami Goat Curry/ Rogan Josh: again not sure which item we ordered. This is very very little better. Gravy is not great, but at least I can feel goat flavor. Its like cooked goat and mixed with curry - Goat Hyderabadi Biryani: Every person from Hyderabad will make full of fun if we say this is Hyderabadi Biryani. May be we can rename it goat malsa rice and that too I can easily find masla, goat in this dish the rice is missing. I personally felt this is pure masala with missing meat. - Veg Biryani: I can hear the sound of the rice serving rice. Such a dry veg biryani.. The best part is consistency maintaining the tastelessness in every dish. Kudos to chef..! Finally. Everyone is very happy with their ice creams and flavors. We really re-ordered again. This is the only best part and amazing in this place. I would give 5 out of 5 for ice cream flavors and deserts. But Zero rating for food and taste. My colleagues suggested this place as best Indian food in Seattle downtown. But ended up with disastrous experience. I do not think anyone in this group will try second attempt. read more

We dined at Nirmal's as a party of 4, for dinner on a Saturday. Despite not having a reservation, we were able to be accommodated without a problem. We were seated at the center long table, set up family style. This was great, as it provided plenty of room for our group and allowed us to take on the ambiance of the restaurant. For drinks, we stuck to simple water, ginger beer and a chai. Two in the party went for the saoji chicken curry, one with the lamb, and one with the paneer masala. As described, the chicken and lamb were well flavored, spiced, and delicious. The star of the show for us all was the chocolate cake with chikoo ice cream. Delicious! We went here for my husband's bday celebration and so glad we did it. One of the most amazing Indian food experiences we have had in Seattle. Everything from Appetizers to Desserts were so flavorful and perfect. We are definitely coming here for more! Harabhara kebab - the dish dint look that appealing, but trust me the flavors were quite good. Vada pav - this is a must have if you are from Mumbai. Reminded me of street side food. Nothing too fancy. Just pav, wada and peanut chutney. This pav is hands down the best best best pav I have had in US - perfect Mumbai feel :) Chicken angare and Paneer Tikka - Again pretty good! Char flavor was coming in so well Veg Kofta - This probably was the most average dish we had. Soaji Chicken - Wow! Again took me back to Mumbai. Chikoo Ice cream with cake - This was recommend on their menu, though I felt it was ok. Ice cream was good, but cake was bit sweet for my taste. My kid loved it though and finished it :) I would like to add the owner is probably the sweetest person I have met in Seattle. He was so nice and kept recommending some amazing dishes! This place is great! We ordered quite an array of dishes and each one had a distinct & delicious flavor. Some establishments serve dishes that all sort of taste similar but to my surpriss all e of the four dishes we ordered were pretty unique and the owner himself let us know from what regions they were from. Service was nothing special but I appreciate that the owner came by to ask us about our meal and provided some fun info on the dishes and restaurant. The place is a bit spacious and there weren't too many people there so it was a bit cavernous feeling but it was pleasant enough. We brought a group of seven here to celebrate a friend before he moved away for medical school. Our choice was based as much on convenience (near Smith Tower, where we wanted to have drinks) and the need to accommodate multiple diets (particularly vegetarian) as anything, but we could not have made a better choice. Oliver and his staff are Southeast Asian food anthropologists. They have tremendous knowledge of different regional cuisine styles and recipes, and regularly change up the menu to both take advantage of what is available locally and internationally, and to keep the menu fresh and diverse. This is not a dumbed-down takeout menu for Western sensibilities; their food showcases the grand diversity of Indian and other Southeast Asian cuisines, at various levels of heat, libraries of seasoning, and styles of cooking. Our group ordered across the menu - samosas (perfectly cooked, super flavorful) and paneer cubes to start, and a broad selection of dishes including vegetarian, fish, chicken, and red meat options, plus many breads to accompany everything. Our guest of honor had the Dungeness crab curry, a star of the night, but each dish was its own delight, from "humble" yellow dal to the Gujarati-style goat. Meanwhile the staff was consistently friendly, attentive, and skilled. Drink orders were regularly taken and promptly filled. Multiple servers and Oliver himself kept us feeling well cared for and like special guests. We got to hear about Oliver's encyclopedic knowledge of cuisines, his care for the diverse community in Pioneer Square, and his commitment to offering jobs and food to local unhoused people. An unforgettable meal both in terms of the food and the hospitality. We can't wait to come back. read more

Had a dinner date here with a friend and I am so excited to share my review! Nirmal's is located in Pioneer Square - the place is super cute, intimate, non-pretentious. It is a great place to do on a date night. Lots of great menu options for every type of eater- my friend is vegetarian and I am an omnivore. We were both able to find things we can share together and also for me to order separately. Cocktail menu is amazing - I had a really hard time picking which cocktail to order. Lots of Indian inspired flavors! Super creative and delicious! For food, I ordered the Saoji Chicken Rassa. This was super flavorful and spicy (but not too spicy - although for people who can't handle their heat, this could be dangerous). My friend and I shared the Bharwan Simla Mirch (stuffed bellpepper) and a mushroom based curry (can't find the name on the menu on their website). Both were delicious! We also ordered Misal Pav, which was fun to eat (although we both initially struggled how to eat it). It was like an Indian sloppy joe with Indian chex mix (much better than American sloppy joe). Okay, back to the food - their chicken biryani was delicious... an explosion of herbs and spices (in a really good way). I do wish they could add more garlic in their garlic naan but I'm a garlic fanatic. The Saoji Chicken Rassa was spicy but had a great kick which complemented well with the chicken and butter naan. The ambience is perfect for a date or a night out. Just beware of the parking. The parking garages are ~$30 and they're not secured (homeless people are doing shady activities inside).
