Fabulous visit to Nine-Ten, which reminded me why it has been one of our favorites since it opened. It blows my mind also that Chef Jason Knibb has now been here for 23 years. It says something about the owners that there is been no turnover and he's been able to keep innovating with Chef Jose Alonzo now as the long-term pastry chef. All right - to our meal! PATIO: remains great. It's covered, which is great on a rainy night, heaters work well. The wind from the ocean can still be a lot, so bring layers anyway. SERVICE: We had Quinn this visit. He was terrific! Really great recommendations. COCKTAIL: I have often found the cocktail menus here boring compared to other places in town. This month, there were so many choices that looked really innovative and up my alley. I was deciding between Lion's Tail (Bourbon, Allspice Dram, Lime, Angostura), Trinidad Sour (Angostura Bitters, Rye Whiskey, Orgeat, Lemon), and Crescent City (Smith + Cross Jamaican Rum, Sweet Vermouth, Lime, Angostura). Quinn suggested that the TRINIDAD SOUR was the most interesting given how I described my cocktail preferences - he explained that it was made with a full ounce of angostura bitters, whereas most cocktails have only a dash. It came in a super cute up glass, and was really delightful. Didn't know my socks off but it was fun & tasty and innovative. Yum! 9/10 BREAD: I'm trying to go lower carb, but their sourdough country bread was warm and hearty. I had a teeny piece and spouse enjoyed the rest. APPETIZERS: Spouse got an off-menu item, the simple green salad with champagne vinaigrette you can always ask for her. I got the current incarnation of the TUNA CRUDO (Charred brassicas relish, currants, lime segments, aleppo, radish flowers, fresno chile, kombu oil). It was beautifully presented and fun to eat; healthy and light. The brassico relish and currants on the tuna were a really nice combination. I approve! 9/10 ENTREES: I got the current halibut preparation (they always have halibut on the menu but they mix up how they do it): Yu choy, black trumpet mushroom, spring onions, date puree, buddhas hand marmalade, sumac, sunflower, green garlic dashi emulsion. Gorgeous, and who needs carbs! The fish was perfectly cooked and the other things worked really well with it: 9/10 WINE PAIRING: I decided to get a glass to drink with the halibut. Quinn suggested pairing it with a gruner veltliner - he said they had been playing around with pairings and this was a surprising match. It was a super fun food wine (also one of the cheaper wines by the glass, $15) and worked really well. I sipped it without the halibut, meh, not my kind of wine - but as soon as I was drinking it with the halibut (and then with my dessert), it was super delish and paired well. 10/10 here on the pairing. DESSERT: I love Chef Jose Alonzo's more fanciful creations, but we went old school & got the half baked chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, which is a classic here for the reason. It's not like you never had this dessert before - but it is *perfection* here. The chocolate was really rich - and the ice cream is just the ideal texture and flavor. The vanilla bean comes through strongly and it's perfectly smooth. 10/10 to end the meal. Valets and hostess were nice too. We'll be back again, of course, even if it takes us a few months to put it back in the rotation! read more

We came here last night to try the award-winning Nine Ten Restaurant, and had been really looking forward to experiencing the ambiance of this Michelin-recognized spot. We made our 6 PM reservation well in advance and were promptly greeted and seated by the hostess in a cozy, romantic spot--perfect for me and my hubby. The presentation throughout the meal was beautiful. The ambiance was relaxed and casual, though the décor felt a bit loud and slightly outdated. To start, my husband enjoyed their homemade sourdough bread with whipped butter, and they thoughtfully provided a gluten-free bread option for me--which was absolutely amazing. We also shared the hamachi sashimi appetizer. While the presentation was exquisite, the sauce it was served with was a bit overpowering for our taste, as we're more accustomed to sashimi without added sauces. For our entrées, my husband had the ribeye and I ordered the lamb. Both dishes were outstanding--cooked to perfection, incredibly tender, and easy on the palate. We couldn't even finish our meals, but they tasted just as delicious the next day. Overall, we had a great experience and would definitely recommend this place. Nine-Ten's once innovative menu has comfortably settled into a list of old-school favorites, but that's not necessarily a bad thing! IMHO, consistent execution of classic dishes is often underrated, making me appreciate it all the more when it's there and a bit more critical when it isn't. I recently attended a private event here, complete with an excellently staffed open bar. While my Grilled Filet with Cabernet Reduction was prepared as requested (medium rare) but not visually appealing as the juices made a rather large mess on the plate, the mini version of Nine-Ten's signature Half-Baked Chocolate Cake with Whipped Cream looked great but suffered from its size as it was slightly overcooked. read more

I was in La Jolla for a little birthday getaway. I searched Yelp for recommendations and Nine-Ten caught my attention. We ordered Adobada Shrimp tacos and Jamaican Jerk Pork Belly entrees. My compliments to the chef on the sauces used for both dishes. 1. The Shrimp tacos were served on a thick and soft corn tortilla that had been seared with cheese that formed a nice crunchy bed to place the Shrimp on. An avocado sauce and salsa toppings were fabulous. I have eaten hundreds of shrimp tacos in my day, these were the best I EVER ate. 2. The Pork Belly had a nice spicy kick along with black-eyed peas, sweet potato puree, and carrots. The pork was perfectly seasoned that was nice and crispy outside and tender inside. The service was quick, the staff were attentive and checked on us throughout the meal, filling water glasses without being asked or prompted to do so. The restaurant is inside a hotel, nicely decorated for Christmas in the lobby entrance. We had a nice covered patio table, with a poolside view on a sunny day. My boyfriend and I made a reservation here since we were staying at the hotel for our anniversary and it was one of our favorite experiences of the entire trip. Absolutely loved this restaurant! We came here since it was on the list of restaurants for Chase Sapphire Reserve on Open Table and I was honestly blown away. We shared sourdough bread, cacio e pepe, hamachi sashimi, pork belly, and scallops. This was more than enough for 2 of us and we were full even before the scallops came. Everything was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed all the dishes we got but my favorite were the hamachi sashimi (so fresh and a balanced citrus flavor!) and the cacio e pepe (really great flavor and texture). We didn't get to try dessert because we were so full but would love to next time. Service was really kind and attentive. Our server said he's worked at many high end restaurants but this one was top notch and I can totally see that from our experience with the food and service. Came here for a date night with my wife on a Sunday evening after thanksgiving and we were fortunate to have a spot available an hour after deciding where to eat. Our server was very nice and attentive so kudos to the server! The scallops were very delicious and nice hint of citrus that was great. The hamachi was my favorite with a nice savory punch from the sauce smoothened out by the hamachi. The cacio y Pepe was an excellent dish for mushroom lovers and our waiter's suggestions to get the sourdough bread to dip into the sauce was on point. The bread was some of the best bread I've had both in texture and taste. We got the pork belly as well but I'm not as big of a fan of pork belly. The pieces had more fat than I'd like but that's pork belly! Definitely would come back to try other dishes. read more

One of the more disappointing fine dining experiences in La Jolla. Came here for a group dinner for a meeting/talk on a weekday, so options were limited. We all started with the salad, which was by far the most uninspiring of the night. It was just chopped lettuce sprinkled with maybe some vinaigrette and called it a day. There's maybe a spinach leaf or two, but the variety of vegetables or texture or flavor is utterly lacking. For the main course I got a filet mignon, which was cooked decently. It came with mushrooms and potato slices along with a green puree that looked just like basil pesto but does not taste like it at all. It's a bit sweet, maybe with some kind of fruit, but it's not a bad contrast with the beef. Finally, the dessert was some kind of cake, it was soft and had ice cream on the side, but I think the cake is a bit too sweet for me. read more

A classic done to perfection. This was my breakfast. Brûléed French Toast - My daughter could not stop raving about this. Topped with macerated berries, Chantilly cream, and a luscious crème anglaise, it had a delicate, caramelized crunch that made each bite irresistible. Simply divine. Short Rib Toast - According to my wife, this was her personal favorite. Tender short rib on a toasted base, topped with onion marmalade, truffled Mornay sauce, and a perfectly fried egg, served with a petite salad. Bold flavors beautifully balanced, every element executed flawlessly. Any of these dishes alone would impress, but together they make for an unforgettable breakfast experience, thankfully everyone was willing to share. While we didn't sample the fresh breakfast pastries, made in-house daily, we can only imagine how incredible they must be. Next time! Good food but because it is upscale, the portion sizes are small and for higher prices. You do have to make reservations considering how busy they are and their small size At dinner, I tried the Parker house rolls, the potato agnolotti and the half baked chocolate cake. The Parker house rolls (5 pieces) came out warm and were so soft. They're a little sweet on top and paired perfectly with the salted butter they give. They didn't come out with our food at first and when the waiter realized, he gave them to us on the house! The potato agnolotti comes with 5 small stuffed pasta pieces. The sauce is tasty, the green onion gives it a lot of flavor. The crispy mushrooms on top are meaty and add a good texture and flavor! The half baked cake is very runny so there isn't much substance to it. But the flavor is good. For breakfast the next morning, I tried the lemon blueberry pancakes, pavlova and some of the roasted potatoes. The roasted potatoes were so-so, they kind of tasted like they were seasoned with ramen packets and were still a little tough. The pavlova was good, but the meringue itself and cream were just a little too sweet. The tart strawberry compote that comes with it was good for balance! Lastly, the lemon blueberry pancakes (3) were very good! Great texture and size, lots of blueberries and the right amount of lemon to balance it. Pan seared Verslasso Salmon - morel mushrooms, beech mushrooms, wild onions, sorel, citrus cured trout roe vin jaune. Hmmm it was okayyyy not wowed by it. Just okayyyyyy. Grilled Jerk Chicken - confit Japanese sweet potato, broccolini, pickled green onion, Jimmy Nardello peppers, Fresno chili sofrito. This was delicous!!!! Great portion, presentation and flavors. We visited Nine-Ten to treat my in-laws, who were visiting from Korea, to a nice meal near La Jolla Beach. The restaurant had a simple, clean, and inviting vibe. The service was friendly, and the food presentation was beautiful. We had hoped for a course meal, but we were told it's only available with reservations and not for groups of six. Though that was a bit disappointing, we decided to try something else instead. The portions were larger than expected, and everything was tasty especially the Ribeye steak, which was fantastic. Even though we didn't get the course meal this time, I plan to return with my husband to try it on a special day. Overall, it was a great experience. Came here on a Michelin recognized recommendation as one of my foodie friends was in town and he has tried several of the other chef table experiences. I was too chicken to try the price fixed chef table experience so we went a la carte ordering. My friend ordered 3 appetizers to sample several things and he enjoyed the tuna crudo (about 5 or so) and Cacio Pepe and Charred Brassicas Salad. My partner had the sea bass and really loved the pickled grapes it came with. I was hesitant but tried the lamb loin since I normally don't go for lamb, but since profiled on the menu, I went for it, and it was flavorful (not gamey and not mutton/chewy) and tender and the carrots and sides were good (not a big dish but the right amount). We also shared an endive and beet salad which was good. For dessert we tried some pistachio dessert which was interesting, the half cooked chocolate cake which was cool with some sides of ice cream and whip cream and my friend enjoyed the gelato. The place is tucked into the lobby of the Colonial hotel and is a nice space and not too "fancy" meaning I felt fine wearing nice jeans and buttoned shirt. The room is cozy as you are close to others and can get loud as the acoustics are bouncing off the ceiling make it possibly hard to hear for some or you might enjoy other conversations. The staff were a huge highlight... very friendly, attentive and helpful. Parking is street parking or valet at the hotel. read more

Five of us had dinner here to celebrate the holidays. We had a reservation and were put at a smallish half booth table with two chairs. It was not a comfortable table to sit at for those in the chairs wanting a relaxing meal. They could not extend their legs. The meal and service though were superb! It certainly made up for the ridiculous table. Our waiter, Charlie, was terrific, being attentive and informative. We felt well served by him. After getting our drink orders, Charlie opened a bottle of wine we had brought. The corkage fee was $35. We then shared three appetizers on our cramped table, Pork Belly, Spaghetti and Sashimi. They were excellent and served very quickly after our order! We then each had a different entree so we could taste each other's dishes. Rib Eye Steak, Lamb Loin, Duck Breast, Seabass and Scallops. They were cooked perfectly and seasoned so uniquely that we commented on the outstanding unusual taste combinations. Wow what a treat. We then shared two desserts. Half-baked Chocolate Cake and the Banana French Toast. Scrumptiously good and they parred well with the after-dinner drinks. It was a wonderful end to a well prepared and delicious meal. After enjoying Nine-Ten for over 15 years and close to 100 visits, it has been a pleasure to rediscover it once again. After a stretch of time, particularly during the COVID period, when dining out was limited, returning has been especially rewarding, including experiencing their breakfast and lunch offerings. The service remains excellent, and both the coffee and dishes stand out. The pancakes and short rib panini, in particular, feel like signature items well worth trying. On weekends, when nearby cafés are often crowded, this place feels like a hidden gem. There are no long lines, yet the quality is easily on par with, and often exceeds, more popular spots. You continue to deliver consistently, and I always look forward to coming back. read more

It's $10 for valet parking when you dine at the restaurant, and you need to show your restaurant receipt when picking up the car. We ordered the octopus, sourdough bread, a pecan sticky bun, and tuna crudo for starters. The octopus came with potatoes and a cheese sauce that was tasty. The tuna crudo came in 6 pieces and I liked the citrusy dressing. The pecan sticky bun was a sleeper hit (the candied pecans were particularly good); I only wish that the coffee machine was working so we could've had a latte on the side to accompany it. My entree, I had the huevos rancheros. It was quite filling and I took half home for leftovers. We rounded out the meal with the half baked chocolate cake, which had the consistency of a molten lava cake soaked in ice cream - definitely split this with other people. It started with a fantastic bottle of wine, delicious bread, and an assortment of appetizers, including jerk pork belly, Cacio e Pepe, Hamachi sashimi, and Smoked Potato Agnolotti. CLEAN BURGER (3 stars) .... But overrated. - FOOD: mediocre - SERVICE: ok - PRICE: meh - AMBIANCE: loud hotel restaurant This restaurant was recognized as a Michelin Guide in 2024! Eater San Diego listed this place on their list for best burgers in San Diego in 2024! Early part of 2025 I made my way here only to say "clean burger but overrated". :: ORDER :: CACTUS COOLER PRICKLY PEAR ($14) - nonalcoholic. Refreshing and not so sweet, nice balance of fruity and an afternote of cactus. Not into mocktail prices but into mocktail taste. Overall this was more of a refresher drink than a mocktail but will give kudos to the bartender for crafting its presentation with nice detailing to resemble a cocktail with fine details of the black salt side/rim and shaved curly lime peel for garnish. RECOMMEND NINE-TEN BURGER ($21) - house-made pickles, lettuce, tomato, mustard aioli, + Regular Fries. Went for medium-well, no cheese (because I'm kind of lactose). When the burger arrived its presentation was simple a clean. Fully intact, well assembled, and stacked accordingly. Pickle and fries on the sides. I love pickles so the first bite was the house-made pickle which tasted exactly like relish but in full pickle form. This to me didn't go well with the burger as relish is more identified with hotdogs than a burger. I'm also not a hardcore relish person but I eat it in moderation - so to have that flavor in a solid pickle form was more than asked. The burger was tall and i had to split it in half to try and get a full bite to fit in my mouth. First thing i noticed was the burger itself was plain and dry (where is the mustard aioli???) and didn't have any type of sauce to bind together the meat and bread that was present even if it was I didn't taste nor see it - look at my burger cut in half, no sauce. It felt disconnected. And cheese shouldn't count to compensate for dryness so even if one orders cheese it would still be dry. No special seasoning on the patty or anything. Lettuce was fresh and whole leaf, two thick slices of tomato was too thick in my opinion, patty was also thick but flavorless, and the bun had a nice fluff and crunch to it but needs sauce or something. Simple, basic, and classic looking. I felt the fries were better than the burger and I ordered regular fries. Nice and crispy and lightly seasoned. Can I justify $40 for this mediocre meal? I don't care if I'm in La Jolla - it wasn't justifiable enough rush to come back here. Not sure if I want another mediocre experience at that expense when 4 meals of in-and-out would have sufficed. The atmosphere here is at best a hotel lobby bar. The waiter was low energy and blah. For a nice location and prices this was a dud. We will not return. read more

My review is solely based on my to go order My friends and I ordered burgers to go; one with mushroom and blue cheese, other two with mushroom and cheddar cheese. Burgers tasted great, cooked to perfection, however they forgot to add the mushrooms but surely charged us. Located inside of a hotel and it's a lovely establishment, wish they got our orders right... Will definitely give it a try! Parking can be a problem in weekends, so keep that in mind.... read more

Very interesting space. Service was mediocre at best. This is a gourmet restaurant. The staff should know better than clearing dishes off the table before all people at the table are finished. They were trying to hustle us out at 8:30. I would not go back for the food. My scallops were C+ at best. Not worth the money. read more
