I visited Nikolas Pizza in a recent trip to Newport, RI. I chose to come for no particular reason other than I was in mood for pizza and it was close to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, which I visited after my meal. While there isn't too much I can say that is bad about this place, there also isn't a lot good I can say. The food isn't bad, it's just so-so. I ordered a slice of pepperoni pizza and a plate of spaghetti with marinara sauce and garlic bread. The marinara sauce was flavorful, but that was the best part of it. The pasta itself was not al dente. In fact, it was a bit on the mushy side. The garlic bread was too soft and didn't have much of garlic or butter taste. It was there, but barely. The slice of pepperoni was good, but not great. As I have stated in prior reviews, there is no such thing has "bad" pizza, but there is definitely better or worse pizza. This slice was right about in the middle. Considering the size of the slice, the price of $4.50 was reasonable. The staff was friendly and the food came out quickly, no complaints there. Overall, if want pizza or Italian food in Newport, RI, there are better places. read more

You know I was surprised on how many options there were on the menu besides pizza. Tried the slice of cheese pizza which I was able to split into two slices and it was actually really yummy! Perfect amount of cheese and crisp! Gave the Asian salad a try as well as a roast beef grinder and both were pretty good! The menu has options from pizza, grinders, salads to pasta and desert. I hate to make this review but I feel I have to we have been coming here for a long time and we always get the pizza and it has always been great never had a complaint so my wife and I decided to get something different because we had just had pizza a few days earlier so we decided to order and pick up the food and eat by the water only a few minutes down the road . First we called and asked if the fish and chips platter was a light batter or a thick beer batter the person on the phone said he didn't know and was gonna ask the chef after being on hold for minutes we hung up and called back someone else answered so we asked the same question and if it was different batter then the fish sandwich and all he said was it's the say fish so since he didn't answer our question we just ordered it anyway and also got a chicken cutlet sandwich when we got to the spot to eat we opened the container to see what looked life frozen chicken patty cut into strips and what looked to be frozen fish fillets that were so greasy we couldn't eat it! I think they say 40 years in business and I believe they are still using the same plastic ware and checkered tablecloths. So the place is not updated. The food however is very good. I had a "slice" which is 1/4 of a 10" pie. Lots of pepperoni and chewy mozzarella the way I like. The crust was tasty but soft in the middle maybe because of sitting on hand. Wife was happy with her ham grinder. It looked good and she commented on the provolone. We both enjoyed side salads with sweet and sour Greek dressing. Lettuce, red onion, cucumber, olive, tomato and pepperoncini. Our server Wendy was very attentive and charming. The slice was a surprise at only $3.50. Glad we stopped. Free parking too. read more

Generally speaking my rule of thumb with Yelp reviews is never go to a restaurant with less than a 3.5 average, 3 1/2 stars. Below that means A LOT of bad reviews to bring the average down that way. But in this case we were hungry we're driving by and there was a parking space right there and what the heck went in. Let's just say in the future I will abide by my long-standing policy. We had a simple quick lunch, just a couple of slices of pizza which were mediocre at best: soggy crust, not particularly well heated. Being New Yorkers we know good pizza, not good pizza, and you know the rest. This is a shame because many of the pizza restaurants in this town get good ratings. Best restaurant in Newport. We make sure to go there for dinner every time we visit the area over the past 25 years. The food and services are exceptional. We went into Nikolas Pizza on a Sunday night at 4PM with a group of 14. We were seated immediately and served right away. The table ordered calamari and onion rings and there weren't any complaints. You can order the calamari three different ways off the menu, but we only ordered the regular one with black olives, pepper rings, and marinara on the side. I ordered the Greek salad and a the Ultimate Pizza. The pizza was loaded with plenty for great toppings and there wasn't a piece left when we left. I'd give the pizza a 5 star rating. The Greek salad was great as well, but I've had larger potion sizes at other places. Desserts were ordered for the table as we all shared bite size portions and I was very impressed with the flavors of every one of them. Not only was the presentation solid, but the greens were crisp, the strawberries clean and super sweet and ripe, accompanied with Gorgonzola, slivered almonds and just the right amount of raspberry vinaigrette - not too much not too little. A large late night supreme pizza and a gyro was what we wanted, and we were determined to call around and get it! I was so thankful when Nikolas pizza said that they could accommodate us. (It was very close to closing time.) I was able to place the order and pick it up in a total of 25 minutes. Again, I'm so thankful for the late night accommodation, but for $50 (large pizza, gyro, and tip), the quality wasn't what we were expecting. It was a pan-style pizza (totally fine), but it wasn't amazing, or honestly even that large (6 slices). We just weren't totally blown away. The gyro was more bread than meat and was just ok. Visiting from NYC and was in the mood for pizza. This was one of the few places open before 5 pm so we decided to try it and were not disappointed! We were greeted very warmly when we walked in. Our server was the nicest! So sweet and funny. We ordered a large margherita pie with fried eggplant and an order of a full rack of ribs. OMG...soo good. The crust on the pie was so light and flavorful. The sauce was perfect. There were fresh roma tomatoes, ricotta AND fresh mozz on the pizza. If this is the way greeks make pizza, i'm on board! The ribs were delicious too. They were sturdy but the meat came right off the bone when you eat them. It came with corn bread and 2 side dishes. We chose fries and cole slaw. The fries came in a huge basket. It was like an entree in itself! The cole slaw was the only thing that we didn't care for. If you like A LOT of mayo in it (creamy), then you may like it. We were completely stuffed and prices are reasonable. TIP: After we parked at a meter (which is very inexpensive at 1.25/hr), we realized there was a parking lot. on the plus side, we were able to watch the car from our table. :) read more

They are fast, efficient and food is DELISH! *Italiano pizza- had artichokes, prosciutto,and fresh basil on it- the crust was pretty soft *regular one topping pizza with olives (for the kids) it was pretty standard and basic just the way it's supposed to be for the kiddos *12 count Buffalo wings- a little dry, could've used a little bit more sauce but still good. *12 count Little Italy wings- light batter, garlic and salt *Seafood Diavolo- linguini pasta with combination of shrimp and calamari tossed in a spicy red sauce. (**yum my favorite) *Chicken Alfredo with Penne pasta- I didn't care for this and it was too creamy for me *Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti- the breaded chicken Parmesan was very soft and moist *yum factor* tossed in a red sauce. *Veal Parmesan with Spaghetti- not my favorite as the veal was a bit dry. Bought a chicken bacon ranch pizza with tomatoes. My family feels pizza could of been bigger for the $27. What my family like about the pizza was it had a great crispy crust and a-lot of flavor. I am so glad we did! Nikolas provided one of the best meals I have ever had in the area! We got chicken parm dinners, salads, and zeppolis - they were all incredibly delicious. The chicken parm was crispy, hot, and cheesy with flavorful marinara sauce; the salad was fresh and dressed perfectly; and the zeppolis were sugary and warm, just perfect! The pizza (the ONLY place on the island to have a whole-wheat crust option) is very solid as well, as are other selections we've tried. The eggplant parmesan (pictured), while oily and thicker than I prefer, was very tasty. The meat sauce is perfect and reminds me of my nana's (the marinara, on the other hand, is great for those who like oregano in their sauce). Service was outstanding which is why I gave them a 1 star. The food tasted like A$$ at best . They claimed authentic but it was far from. I don't even think the owners are even Greek. The waiter pretends to have an accent but I heard him speaking perfect English with no accent. The ribs were supposed to be barbecue but tasted Asian and swear I saw a delivery from the Chinese restaurant down the street. I'm giving two stars for a quick, free delivery. The barbecue chicken pizza from Nikolas is an absolute abomination. It's actually a red onion pizza, with a purplish-brown slop mixed with large chunks of chicken. This affront to the culinary arts easily separates from the thin soggy crust below. The crust itself tries to escape its own toppings. It's tough to mess up pizza, and even bad pizza is still edible, but this was one of the worst pizzas I've ever had. Run, don't walk. The service was less than subpar - being treated as if we were a bother to be helped. We placed the order to be delivered since it was free (a nice perk). We ordered an eggplant parmesan and a large pizza and wish we didn't! The eggplant Parmesan was not even eggplant Parmesan. It was four fried lumps of eggplant with a single piece of melted cheese over plain cooked spaghetti with a SIDE of what tasted like jarred sauce. What a disappointment! Went to Nicolas Pizza for a quick bite before a local film. Wish I would have eaten the leftovers at home. Service was poor, waitress came over once to take our order, then to drop off drinks, then disappeared for 40 minutes. No checking in at all. After 40 minutes she literally dropped our food on the table and left saying the best person from the kitchen was stuck in traffic. My husband ordered fish and chips and I ordered the eggplant parm appetizer. Fish was uncooked, fries tasted like bacon fat and the Cole slaw was hot. My eggplant parm was cold, and greasy. The garlic bread was okay. We mentioned the undercooked fish and she said she didn't really know much about fish so we'd have to explain it to her and then she would let the manager know. We said forget about it and left. One of the worst efforts to serve and cook food I've ever encountered. There were lots of staff standing around looking panicked. Maybe the dept of health was on their way or the entire kitchen staff had quit? Anyway you slice it, we won't be back. Oh, and you can't get in or out of the place because the tables are so crowded that you can't get around them. Hope they don't have a kitchen fire. I have had a number of their Italian Grinders over the last couple of years, both as pick up and delivery. I must say that I will no longer continue to order them. I've noticed that the "quality" of "deli" meat they use seems to be a lower grade of meat. I find much fat in the meat, and sometimes it's as though I'm chewing on a "rubber band" and usually end up spitting it out. This is not acceptable. Thank god, we now have a Jersey Mike's in Newport. Pretty inexpensive place to grab a pizza in Newport, most of the other places I looked at her we're almost $20 for a small with no meat toppings. I got the chicken, bacon, ranch pizza, it was good, only thing I wasn't crazy about was the crust. Service was fast and very friendly!
