Ate from the £20 set menu (3 courses) and had the prawn cocktail starter, which became a crayfish cocktail as they had run out of prawns (the waitress did check first!). It was nice, but nothing special.
Main course was paella, which had large pieces of tender chicken, with-tail prawns, squid rings and 2 mussells. It was hot, tasty and filling, but again, nothing extordinary. My fellow diner's main was the salmon and new potatoes in a garlic butter, which was equally sufficient but nothing to write home about.
The choice of 4 deserts didn't offer anything that wasn't Coeliac-friendly, so the staff did a great job of providing a fruit salad and ice cream substitute (extra marks to the waitress for being very helpful and pro-active in checking the ingredients in the food) and I tucked into a melted chocolate fondant with forest fruits (from jar/frozen) and vanilla ice cream.
The wine list offered a reasonable selection but the prices were ridiculous. If I hadn't have drunk the same brand of wine in a different restaurant at the weekend, I wouldn't have known that they were offering it at HALF the price of this place (not on special), at £7.50 for a large house red, I think it's a bit steep.
So, the moral of this place is that, as hotel restaurants go, the food was perfectly acceptable. And I'm sure many of the dishes would be great to tuck into from the comfort of your room as room-service, but there's not a hope in hell that you would make a special journey to this restaurant if you weren't staying at the hotel. It just doesn't offer anything that you can't get better and cheaper nearby, and probably in better surroundings (the classic lounge feel was in need of a bit of modernisation).
Best bit - the great staff
