Junior Turkey on Pumpernickel, Swiss cheese, lettuce, & tomato
    Allison L.

I have been here twice. The first time, I made the "mistake" of purchasing the regular size turkey sandwich. It was TOO MUCH for me and I ended up discarding some of the turkey. The second time I knew to order the "junior". The junior is more fitting for me (still maybe a bit much but I almost finished the whole thing). Sandwiches come with Nielsen's signature Mayo and mustard spread. You have to add cheese, lettuce, tomato at an extra cost (understandable). I look forward to trying the chicken and egg salads. Maybe even try their tuna salad one day. I will order the deviled eggs next time, I have heard great things about them. Will be back many times!

Can't believe this place has been open my whole life and I'm just discovering it. The vibe here is Sunday afternoon with your grandma and I am here for it. Everyone working is so friendly and wonderful, I felt happier just ordering. My pastrami sandwich has a hefty helping of pastrami (I'll probably have to save my second half) to make room for the deviled eggs (HUGE) and pickle I couldn't leave without. I also got a chocolate chip cookie and brownie. This place is such a gem, service was super quick I didn't even have time to finish reading all the cute history they had up on the wall. That article from Gourmet magazine from way back when requesting their potato salad hit me in the feels. I love how this place is not just a great spot to grab some lunch but a little piece of Houston past tucked away.

I had lunch here today for the first time. This deli has obviously been here for many years. It wasn't busy today during my visit but I saw a few people come by to pick up their to go orders that they phoned in. My impression is that this place is popular in this neighborhood (Afton Oaks). It has its own parking lot with plenty of room. Inside, the only seats available are stools perched along a bar running along the front windows facing outward. Nothing fancy here at all as it's old school for sure. I ordered a regular sized roast beef on rye with additions of Swiss cheese and lettuce and tomato for $9.85. The sandwich alone was $8.25 with the cheese $1 more and .60 cents more for the veggies. I added a self serve soft drink for another $1.69. Total with tax was almost $13. For a sandwich and drink that's definitely in the loop pricing! The sandwich was ready in about 1 minute after ordering. I will say it was very good. With a big and thick center of roast beef it was a hearty sandwich. It had 2 slices of Swiss, quality lettuce and tomato on very good bread with rare roast beef. Yes, with a cost of almost $10 it was expensive but I could taste the quality. It also came with a pickle spear. If I want a sandwich and in the area this is where I will come. The sign said open 7 days a week closing at 4 p.m. each day.

    Chicken Salad Sandwich

I've always been a fan of Nielsen's Chicken Salad sandwiches, but it has been several years since I have stopped to enjoy one. A friend mentioned them, so I called to see if I could place an order curbside. The nice person who answered said only curbside for now which was great to hear! Curbside was easy and efficient, as my sandwich was brought out to me fairly quickly. I thought the chicken salad was great, but I had to look twice at my receipt when I saw I was "charged EXTRA" for lettuce and tomato. I guess I have never encountered this before, so with the up charge for lettuce and tomato plus tax, I paid slightly less than $10.00 for only this sandwich. Now I know you are going to ask me was it worth it especially for such an expensive "chicken salad" sandwich?! Well the taste was very good, but NOT worth the price. Yes it was extremely full of chicken salad as the picture I added shows, but honestly who pays almost $10.00 for a chicken salad sandwich? I know meat prices have increased since the pandemic, but chicken has stayed about the same. I right now can not justify the cost, so a future return will not happen soon! If I was in New York or areas like that, I would expect a higher price, but not in Houston.

Lots of seating, great wait staff, and the sandwiches are gigantic--as they should be for the price. $30 for a sandwich on average. We split an open face pastrami (which they brought an extra plate) and we are glad we did. The potato salad is tiny. Too much sandwich for one but not enough potato salad for two! The pickles they provide before your sandwich arrives are yummy- not like a traditional out of the bar pickle. These are what I remember from NYC. Garlic and not sweet. We also had the apple pie alamode. Also pricey and gigantic. It was warm and delicious. Glad we tried this icon. We went at lunch and they get quite the crowd. You are not rushed at all. The parking was a bit of a challenge, but it was easy enough because it was a calm Tuesday morning. To get from the parking area to the store, you just take the elevator one level down, and then you're right inside. This place is surprisingly big, filled with all kinds of snacks, cookies, and coffee. The highlight for me was their shawarma breakfast wrap. It was top-notch and exactly what I needed. You choose between whole wheat or white pita, and it's filled with scrambled eggs, your choice of fresh or sautéed spinach, and they add potatoes as well. Then they top it with shawarma chicken, tomato, and a delicious sauce. For $8.5 it was worth every bite. Hands down, a five out of five. I also tried their coffee, which was just a standard brew sitting in ice for hours and nothing special. At $2.50, it was fine, but nothing to write home about. The real stars were the cookies. I got a coconut pecan cookie and an almond crunch cookie, and both were absolutely delicious. I didn't have time to explore the whole store, but there was a great selection of fresh produce, chocolates, and all sorts of small treats. Overall, the staff were really friendly, and the entire visit was smooth. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area. Five out of five stars!

I was shocked to see two pieces of brisket and a chicken breast for $28. Maybe it was an off night but the quality just wasn't there. I'm not normally a cold deli sandwich person, but would order this sandwich over and over again. Since I was solo dining, but wanted to try more than just the sandwich on my first visit I opted for a side of spaghetti and the italian sausage. Dumped the italian sausage on my spaghetti and it was like a small side entree. The sausage was the highlight, but the spaghetti was well cooked and the traditional marinara was flavorful. While I expected the restaurant to be a little more bustling at lunch time, it was a very comfortable experience in the bright open dining area with a great deal of Houston Sports Memorabilia on the walls. I had originally wanted to come because I saw that they sold steaks for purchase you can bring home to cook. However, since it was lunchtime and we were already hungry, we decided to grab some lunch as well. We got the 3 meat combo with chicken, brisket, and ribs. It came with two sides and we chose coleslaw and chicken salad. I thought it was nice they had extra protein choices as sides. They also had a tuna salad and egg salad in addition to pasta salad, beans, potato salad and other options. The food came out quickly and the meats were all very tender. However, they just tasted salty. I had a hard time tasting any other spices/flavors which is what I'm accustomed to at other bbq places. The chicken salad was salty as well. It would've been tastier in a sandwich with some crisp greens versus just by itself. Coleslaw was average. Edible but nothing special. Husband thought it was too sweet. I do have to say the service was very friendly. The worker behind the counter gave us the impression that he really wanted to help and make us comfortable. When I found out they only sold bottled water, he offered to go to the back and grabbed us two cups of tap water, which was a nice gesture because he didn't have to. We ended up not getting any other meats because the unpackaged steaks looked dried out and sad in fridge. I wasn't sure if those were the pieces they would sell you or if they were just for display. But for $34.99/lb, I didn't want to risk them giving me the dried out looking steak. Overall, it seemed like people really like this place . The person in front of my husband said this place has the best burgers! And lots of people kept coming in and out. However, for us, this isn't our favorite.
