This is such a fun place to come to. Simple and good. I have only been here for ice cream so I can not speak to all the food that they serve. I am up in the area a few times a year and Nicky Doodles is a always a must visit on our way home. It is an extremely easy in and out off the main road and there is always plenty of parking. Walk up to the window and order your favorite Sunday or Ice Cream Cone. They have plenty to choose from and their tem members are always smiling and east to work with. Their portions are a little of the large side so beware when you're ordering if this is just for you. Any flavor-topping I have ever ordered has always been extremely fresh-tasty. I am unsure if the ice cream I got was called Samoas, although it certainly tasted exactly like the Samoas Girl Scout cookies. In Rome, NY visiting for a softball tournament and was told this is a must try. They have many different custards and soft serve flavors. Their allergy protocol was easy to understand and acceptable for our allergy needs. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Cool, 50s diner vibe inside and tables with shade and sun on the outside. After dinner during a work trip, I came here with some friends. It was raining a little bit and the line was a little long. The wait time did give us a chance to review the menu so there's a positive. I was a little indecisive when it was my turn to order, but the cashier had patience with me and helped me choose between two items. After getting our dessert, we ate in the car to avoid the rain. I ordered the Brownie Sundae. It was rich, warm and so good. It made up for the line and I understood why it was so long. This is for food; we didn't have ice cream. We ran in for hot dogs at lunchtime and jeez, it was SLOW. They didn't have anything ready, seemed to make things one at a time; the few people in front of us were waiting and waiting and waiting. So we took a look at the grill, and he seemed to be making things one at a time. The two hot dogs were not even fired up until later; then the guy had to walk to the other end of the room for sauerkraut. Just really ridiculous. Perhaps they're short staffed, but there didn't seem to be any procedure in place for making so-called fast food. They also have too many menu items and would do better to narrow it down. I got firehouse burger and fried shrimp. My husband got cheeseburger. We also got chocolate milkshake and ice cream cone. Few days later we came back got ice cream sandwiches. The firehouse burger was good and had jalapeños in it. So if you like spicy this is what you should get. Fried shrimp was okay. But the hot sauce was good. The cheeseburger was good too. The chocolate milkshake was okay. The ice cream cone and ice cream sandwiches are good. Good thing about this place is now they open all year around starting this year. it was my first time trying this place new to the area everyone said they made good ice cream me and my wife went she enjoyed her sundae but I got a strawberry banana malt shake waited close to 10 min for the shake and all I got was strawberry flavored milk. To their credit, this place is pretty good and I ended up spending my fast food dollars here instead of the national-chain fair. It's got reasonable prices, a lip-smacking array of hotdogs and hamburgers, and the best ice cream I have had in a long time! A sign that reads "2 hotdogs for $1" many times graced the sandwich board outside on the main drag. There are like 50 very original flavors and a zillion toppings. And to put the 'Rome' in Rome, they have gelato that is pretty darn good this side of the pond. If it's good weather, definitely take it outside to their picnic area and enjoy the 3 days of sunshine in which Rome basks every year. The owners were very friendly. What a great place! Surrounded by chain fast food joints and here's this place that is totally unique. In the interest of full disclosure, this is my first visit and I only had the steak sandwich and fries. Still, there is something refreshing about being able to watch your food being cooked without the aid of prepackaged serving-sized portions. I also visited just a week from them closing for the season. I was the only person there and received personalized service and a quiet dinning room (nice after a frustrating day getting my car fixed, but I digress). Terrible. I had originally posted this review 2 years ago and gave them 5 stars. I have been a patron of this establishment for the last 5 years at least. Tonight however I am changing my review to one star, if I could go lower I would. I placed an order over the phone for 3 meals, the bacon cheeseburger was over cooked, my onion rings were burnt, I asked for them crispy which I know is hard to accomplish on a take out order, I'm a chef, so I get it. I could have gotten over this and chalked it up to a bad night. What really perturbed me however is that when I walked in to pick up my order, not a single person aknowledged me. The place was empty, the grill cook looked directly at me, made eye contact and stood there. The young woman who was on register was no where to be found. I stood there awkwardly for over a minute before she finally appeared with out a single person speaking. Isnt it company policy to at least say hello and that someone will ne right with me? I mean it is for the 500 seat restaurant I run. I supervise the kitchen but if I am out in the front of the house and see someone who has entered I greet them and either ask if I can help or tell them I will find someone who will. I get my food and my drinks and rake them to the car already aggravated over my treatment. I then proceed to the ice cream line. There was two people ahead of me. I stood there for 20 minutes waiting to be helped. It was 815 pm, I understand that the staff has cleanup and closing duties, however there was 4 employees back there amd a single person was taking orders and making ice cream. One was sweeping and another was pulling utensils to be cleaned. The other two were staring off into space. After waiting forever and thinking about the 50 dollar order in my car getting cold I'm finally helped. I order a medium soft vanilla in a dish with extra sprinkles on the side to go. I then ask for a brownie sundae, no whip cream, no nuts, and can you please put thw hot fudge on the side in a Styrofoam cup so it isnt all melted by the time I get home and am ready to eat it. The girl then tells me that they are not allowed to do that. So let me get this straight. I paid 50 dollars for 3 meals that are now cold from waiting so long amd when I make a simple request I am told no. I could understand if it was unreasonable but it was a simple request so that I could enjoy my sundae without being a melted mess by the time I ate it. As someone who has spent their entire life in this industry, I understand unreasonable customers. YOU ALWAYS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SATISFY THE CUSTOMER, THATS HOW YOU GET REPEAT BUSINESS. SADLY, YOUVE NOW LOST MINE. I suggest a staff meeting about how to greet customers, explain that they are the ones paying their salary amd to always try and be accommodating.
