I'm currently visiting Pittsburgh and randomly stumbled across this little coffee and tea shop downtown. It was about a 20 minute drive from where I'm staying, and I am SO glad I decided to make the trip! The moment I walked in, I was immediately impressed. I genuinely don't think I've ever walked into a place that smelled so amazing! There were so many different coffee beans, teas, and snacks to look through that I was honestly a little overwhelmed, in the best way. I took my time browsing everything before finally deciding to order a coffee. The woman helping me recommended the sweet potato latte, and she could not have made a better recommendation. It was absolutely incredible! I'm not being dramatic when I say this may genuinely be one of the best coffees I've ever had. It was so good that I practically finished the entire latte within minutes! They even added the cutest little touch to my cup, which made the experience feel that much more thoughtful and special. It's those small details that really make a place memorable. The customer service was top-tier from beginning to end. Everyone was so welcoming and helpful, the shop itself is adorable, and the downtown location is perfect. You can tell there's a lot of care put into both the products and the overall experience. I'm already looking forward to making another 20-minute drive just to come back. Such a wonderful little find while visiting Pittsburgh, and definitely a place I'll remember! read more

Happened to stumble in while we were in the area, and what a neat little find. They have roasted coffee beans and loose-leaf teas to take home, along with drinks to go. I tried the dirty chai, which had a different spice profile than the traditional chai I'm used to. I probably should've ordered it hot, as the iced version was a little too thin for my liking. Service was friendly, and I was excited to spot Formosa oolong, so of course I grabbed a bag to take home. read more

Great coffee in a good area! Many options to choose from and all flavored coffee is brewed with the flavor inside of the bean opposed to sugary syrups. I thought the pricing was fair and the service was solid. This isn't a coffee shop to sit down and hang out in, but if you're looking for a coffee to fuel your exploration of Pittsburgh it's definitely worth it! read more

Nicholas Coffee is my favorite coffee shop to go to downtown. It's always fresh, and made perfectly. The inside is so nostalgic and smells amazing. It's a coffee lovers dream. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about all of the different beans. Don't sleep on Nicholas Coffee & Tea! read more

Nicholas Coffee & Tea - Vanilla latte - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

I stopped by here a couple of Saturdays ago with my wife and our twins for our morning coffee. Every weekend we try to visit a new local coffee shop, and on this morning we decided to go to Nicholas Coffee and Tea. How I have not reviewed this iconic Pittsburgh coffee shop before, I do not know, but it has been a number of years since my last visit. Its location in Market Square makes it prime real estate in Pittsburgh, but with Market Square currently being renovated, parking is not exactly easy to come by. Because of that, I had my wife run in while I circled the block. She came back out with an eggnog flavored latte for me and a gingerbread latte for herself. My eggnog latte ended up being pretty good, as I could clearly taste the nutmeg and cinnamon flavors. What really stood out was the texture of the drink, as it was thick, almost milkshake thick. I can only imagine how rich the eggnog they used must have been. While the strong eggnog flavor mostly masked the coffee, I did still get a bit of coffee flavor on the finish. My wife also enjoyed her gingerbread latte. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. Our coffees were good, and I would really like to head inside and see the shop again after being away for so long. read more

Nicholas Coffee & Tea - Gingered and eggnog lattes - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

What a Pittsburgh institution! It's been around for ages and the family still runs it and they roast all their beans right there in house so it smells incredible always. They have so many kinds of beans and the staff is so knowledgeable and helpful in helping you pick which kind. The coffee on drip is also delicious! They carry lots of other knick knacks and snacks too so this is such a great place to grab a gift. They have teas too! Definitely a great place to stop in while you're downtown! read more

I first reviewed Nicholas Coffee & Tea in 2013, when I did not drink coffee at all. Well, these days I'll drink coffee with stuff in it (yay lattes!), which means I have a whole new appreciation for this place. Prior to starting to drink coffee, I really only came here if other people wanted to...because this isn't just a shop that serves drinks. They roast their beans on-site, store them on-site (in an eye-catching storage display), and package and prepare them on-site. As you might imagine, there is an overwhelming smell of coffee in this store. It's taken me a while to get there, but I can officially say: that's part of the store's charm. They're still operating in Market Square, in a cozy space that can quickly fill up with a line of fellow coffee drinkers. If you're ordering a single beverage (i.e. me every time I visit), you'll walk from the front door to the back counter; this is where their baristas work and whip up made-to-order brews. Shoppers can also browse their tea selection (it'll be to your right about halfway between the front door and the back counter); and most impressively, their vintage coffee bins are lined up behind a separate counter, which runs the length of the left side of the store. I've only bought single to-go drinks at Nicholas Coffee & Tea, but a relative orders their beans/grounds in-bulk and has done so for years. Maybe I can get her to write her own review about that! I however will end my update by saying: this place, its drinks, its coffee...it's all great. I mean, I feel like other yinzers already knew that, seeing as this place has been in business for over 100 years...but I had to say something since my 12-year-old review absolutely does not represent my feelings about Nicholas Coffee & Tea in 2025. I now always come here when I'm downtown, and I always look forward to it! read more

I am a flavored bean gal- and this place is like a candy store for a flavored bean lover! They have an unbelievable selection AND in addition you can mix flavors to create your own dream coffee! The service is always great. They are a must stop when in town read more

COFFEE Pumpkin King - good pumpkin flavor. Good temperature and coffee taste. The drink wasn't that sweet, which I personally like better. VIBES This place has a lot of coffee beans that you can buy that are lined up along the wall. Place also gives a nice vintage/older vibe. More so grab and go then sit down. SERVICE Service is great! I asked the guy for suggestions on a sweeter coffee and he recommended the pumpkin king, which was honestly amazing. They were quick to get drinks out as well. read more

We come to market square around the Holidays every year. We do the shops and the kids always skate around the giant tree. I feel like we do this tradition at different times each year (morning, afternoon, or evening). We did morning this year, so I held off on coffee to grab one by the rink. My wife originally said Dunkin, which usually does not disappoint. I walked down to Dunkin and saw Nicholas Coffee Company, so I figured I would give it a try. The smells are unbelievable as you enter. The employees were really friendly and helpful with selections and questions I had. My wife and I both got the coffee of the day, which was only $2 for a 12 oz. My wife described hers as ok. Mine was good, but for my liking was not hot enough. Overall, a decent experience. read more

I walked into Nicholas Coffee feeling lost in a sea of leaves, but then came Paige. She didn't just help me pick tea; she curated a lifestyle. With the precision of a diamond cutter and the charisma of a Broadway star, she guided me to two high-quality teas that I'm now convinced will solve all my problems. Old school coffee roasters that have a huge selection. I enjoy the whole bean. the employees are well versed.

Best coffee in downtown. Iced americano can't be beat. Their loose leaf Irish breakfast tea is wonderful. Staff is always so nice. They have a small selection of treats, I usually grab a Walker's shortbread packet if I need something to eat with my coffee in a pinch. Note that there is no where to sit, it is a takeaway coffee house. read more

If you want to step back in time and be a kid again then visit Nicholas Coffee and Tea, because other than selling coffee they sell candies and snacks you'll probably recognize from your childhood. And walking into Nicholas is like walking into an old general store--I love that feeling. I visited Nicholas because I love coffee and I loved the nostalgic experience I had looking at the non-coffee items. I stopped by just for a cup of coffee while in the downtown area for a conference. I ordered a cappuccino that was good and really hot. I really liked how they also sell lots of good coffee equipment for home brewing. I saw a Chemex pour-over glass and filters and an Aeropress and filters. They also sold filters for drip brew machines. Of course you can't miss the huge selection of coffee beans. In addition to coffee they sell an assortment of tea bags. read more

Today is my lucky day. I was intending to buy chocolate raspberry because my supply in Columbus is getting low. Then I spied a bin of oops. Raspberry crumble which the nice employee said is was raspberry with cinnamon, kind of like a danish. I bought them out. 5 pounds of fabulous Nicholas Coffee at a reduced price. This place has been a favorite of mine since I was a toddler and mom would buy me some huge prunes. Dont know if they sell those anymore but when I am in the Burgh, I stock up here. I stopped here on a Saturday morning to support a locally owned coffee shop rather than a chain and I am so glad I did. I had no idea how many types of coffee flavors and varieties they had for sale by the pound and available for grinding! I bought 6 single serving bags of grounds that make an average 8-10 cup pot of coffee for $6.95! I got a variety of flavors that I'm excited to try. I also got a maple iced coffee that was really yummy and you could tell the quality of the coffee itself was top notch. They had so many gift ideas, too. This is a new fave for me. read more

Located in market square, this coffee shop attracts a great crowd in & out pretty fast. They have holiday lattes right now but I was in the mood for the honey/lavender/vanilla latte. Oh my gosh this place smells amazing. Go in just to smell the coffee. Then buy the little sample bags.

I was hoping for craft roasters, but it's just not the case. It's decent commercial grade coffee, though. The counter person didn't put the lid on tightly, so coffee poured down my clothes on the first sip. Makes me want to go down to two stars, but I'll let that go. read more

Seriously great coffee. Nicholas Coffee is what every city needs. They have a huge selection of coffees and teas. You can purchase whole beans or have them grind them fresh for you. The prices are average. The staff is all super knowledgeable about the beans and tea that they sell. They also have novelty items and even fresh home made peanut butter. Definitely worth a trip! read more

Wow! Walking into this place is like stepping back in time. The company has been open since 1919. However, this specific location has been open since the 1950s or 60s (at least that's what the guy behind the counter told me). You can definitely feel the history in this place! The service was quick and there is a wide variety of coffee and speciality drinks to serve everyone's needs. I'm not much of a coffee drinker however, I was very impressed with the selection and flavors they had. Stop on in to get a feeling of historic Pittsburgh or get a artfully crafted beverage.
