I have never written a review before but my experience at Nice Tattoo was so incredible that I have to share. This was my first tattoo ever and I was stuck in horrible subway traffic and got there 30 minutes late. They were super accommodating despite the fact that I was late. Once I got there my artist, Nas, showed me the designs she drew up from my form and they were beautiful and she gave me input on how to modify the design I wanted to make it more beautiful and age better over time. Her design was gorgeous and I still can't stop looking at it. She was really friendly and I immediately felt comfortable when I got in the chair. I resurrected my Yelp account just to write this. I found this shop through the New York Times article (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/style/women-tattoo-artists.html), because I loved the concept and wanted to support a woman-owned business. But I was also very nervous because the tattoo I wanted added to is very specific and difficult to get right. When walk in, it immediately feels different from any other tattoo parlor. None of the seediness or grunge. It looks like it could be someone's living room; lots of light, some nice window plants, impeccably clean. Everyone is very friendly and you're offered sparkling water as soon as you sit down. Very unpretentious, and honestly just a very nice place to hang out on a summer afternoon. Tattoo parlors have a lot to prove in terms of customer acquisition, and most places do it by plastering their portfolios on the walls or toughening up the decor. But Nice Tattoo Parlor only wants to make it a comfortable experience for you, because it should be, considering that it's not a very comfortable experience in the first place. It's a place you seek out if you want quality work done by quality artists. You're not just paying for the ink itself; you're also paying for the experience. Jes was super patient; she blocked out an entire two hours just to talk with me, plan, and measure the design (the tattoo itself took under 15 minutes). I made several adjustments and she was happy to accommodate. She even fixed some parts that had faded a little. It matches the rest of the piece exactly, which is not an easy thing considering that she had limited space to work with, and I couldn't be happier with it. I was planning on this being my last tattoo, but now I'm not so sure, and if I change my mind, I will absolutely come back here. I got a tattoo from Nas yesterday and I am incredibly happy with my experience! It was my first one and she was extremely helpful when I had a question shortly after booking and explained every step as she was going, which was very comforting. I was a little nervous going in, but felt so calm the moment I sat on the table. I LOVE the design she came up with and she made it even better then I could have imagined!! Wow. Wow wow wow wow WOW. Okay, here's the rundown: This place is dope. Adorable. Too cute. Ridiculously well styled and decorated. It smells vaguely of fresh baked goods from the bakery "Take A Break & I'll Bake Cafe" next door. The music playing throughout the parlor is probably a playlist your tattoo artist put together; during my three hours there, tunes ranged from modern, chill beats like SZA and Frank Ocean to nostalgic, smooth oldies like Superstition and Sexual Healing. All in all, it just all feels so COOL - like your big sister's friends let your crash their slumber party and you get to hear all the cool high school gossip !! It's wonderful and supportive and full of some of Brooklyn's strongest, coolest & kindest women. And on top of that? They've all got some badass talent. Which brings me to my INCREDIBLE, WONDROUS & DOPE AS HELL tattoo artist: Emma Flores. (You can find her & all her incredible work at her Instagram: @emmaflorestattoo). To say she was nice would be a criminal understatement. Emma, along with the rest of the staff, were absolutely wonderful from the moment I walked in the door. She worked with me on making an addition to a tattoo I already had - she listened, sketched, took notes on what I wanted differently, and then sketched some more. She offered her artistic opinion while being super supportive of whatever choice I made. For example, when I told her I wanted to add a drawing of hands, she took a photo of my hands (!!) and sketched them out. I cannot tell you how cool that was - she took my idea and made it magic. I'm completely in love with my new ink and the credit is entirely due to her. Thanks Emma!!! For a shop that is basing themselves off "niceness" the way they go about their policies is the complete opposite of "nice". I advise anyone to be careful with Sarah French. If you even want to discuss a tattoo with her.. she makes you pay her upfront. I came to her with an idea (Thank God I changed my mind) all I did was send her some photos and I jumped the gun sending her a $100 deposit, as her email stated. She needs $100 deposit before she can even discuss anything..... Then I found an artist who was more appropriate for my idea, I let Sarah know I went another direction with my idea and was asking for my deposit back and she told me she is not refunding me my $100 deposit due to the fact she spent time answering my email... mind you. She did NOT draw anything, nothing. All I did was sent her an email and inserted photos..... The saddest part was I told her well can I put the $100 towards something else, she said I would have to leave a $50 deposit to talk about another idea. Grimy all about the $$. Sad. read more

I made an appointment at 3:30 and my artist was running late. Which is fine, I get it, it happens. I decide to wait and ask them to call me to come back from grabbing coffee when they're ready. They call me and ask me if I could change the artist. I decided to take a leap of faith and have some trust so I agreed. When I come back to the shop the artist was talking to me about random stuff without even having started the process after it was already quite a bit after my appointment time. It just seemed she had no regard for my time. I remained optimistic though. Finally she's tattooing me and she's being compassionate about my pain because it's my first tattoo. Unfortunately when I went to look at the tattoo up close I wasn't happy at all. She did too much shading when I told her I wanted minimal shading, also she messed up some of the lines on the most critical part of the tattoo. I feel unhappy with the tattoo and I sort of regret it. Nothing I can do now except recommend that you go with an artist you know and that you've heavily researched if you can. read more

I decided to get my third tattoo here. It has been at least 5 years since I got my last tattoo. Found this place on yelp while I was looking for a tattoo parlor. I thought it was nice learning that there was a tattoo parlor with female tattoo artists. My first two tattoos were done by male artists. Everyone here was very friendly. There was only positive vibes. I had an appointment with Hannah on a Friday night at 7pm. It was easy to talk to Hannah and she did an awesome job. I had my third tattoo done on my right side under the bra line area. My experience was that it wasn't too painful and it was quite ticklish. I am a ticklish person. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I would definitely go back here for a retouch or if I wanted a fourth tattoo. read more

i waited over an hour past my scheduled appointment time before my artist came out to talk to me, and ended up with a tattoo blowout. great designs but the a lot of the lines look smudged. if it doesn't go away when it fully heals i'm gonna go somewhere else to see if it can be fixed. because i waited so long, i was one of the last people and the sign was switched to closed. felt very rushed and felt bad asking for something to be changed. it's not what i expected but i'm not mad about it, but i'm mad about how the ink bled out. read more

I had high hopes for this place, however I was extremely disappointed on multiple levels. I asked about getting a draft of the tattoo before my appointment but was told I couldn't. When I got there the design was WAY different than I thought it would be. So I felt rushed to totally change and redesign it. For a place that calls itself "nice" I have to say that Jen was very unfriendly and not helpful in her communication at all. Then the tattoo itself (a fine line one) has healed horribly. It looks like it was drawn on with a pencil by someone who doesn't know how to draw. I reached out and was told my only option is to come in for a touch up and that this is common with fine line tattoos. I wasn't given this information at my appointment and have yet to hear back from Jen about scheduling a touch up. I'm honestly not even sure I want to go back. Very, very disappointed in this place! I've gotten tattooed at a lot of Brooklyn's best shops, including Three Kings and Saved, but always came away with a bad feeling about how I was treated and how the staff regarded me personally. The attitude also impacts how well I feel I am able to communicate with artists, and that changes how the final tattoo turns out. My experience with Nice was completely the opposite: I walked in with a friend to Nice Tattoo and Jes was open, engaging, and attentive while she drew up a custom design that reflected what we wanted while also being just dang good art. There was almost no wait at all for a weekend walk-in. The tattoos were awesome, affordable, and have healed up beautifully. The shop is clean and gorgeous. This place was honestly really cool, it didn't have the usual tattoo parlor type of vibe, it honestly just looks like someones cozy apartment. Nas my tattoo artist was honestly amazing. This is NOT a review of my artist, Nas, who was incredible and deserves TEN stars on her own. A truly amazing artist. This review is of the business itself. First thing: this is not a female-owned business, as its marketing efforts might lead you to believe. All female artists, but it is owned/run by a fellow named Rob, who handles their email correspondence. When I first scheduled my appointment and thought we had settled on a day, he basically stopped responding to my inquiries, which were some basic questions about the day-of my appointment. When I finally got a reply, he told me that I never confirmed my appt (despite email evidence showing otherwise) and I had to book a new date, two months down the road. On top of that, he was generally negligent in answering my questions and gave me *zero* information as to preparing for my appointment and what I should know/wear/bring (and as a first tattoo, that would have been nice). At one point, when I had sent multiple emails asking about the progress of my design (and the general Q's about the tattoo process), he merely replied "email your artist" without even providing her email address. When I finally called the shop to inquire, I did speak with a really helpful woman who answered everything, no problem. While it's a beautiful space, the owner is a lame duck compared to his incredible artists, and I hate to think he got a cut of what I paid. read more

My husband convinced me to stop in while we were walking by one day and I'm so glad I did. I got to work with Hannah who was so talented and that sign does not lie: everyone was SO nice. Hannah worked with me on a design of two eagles, adjusting them according to my notes and walking me through everything step by step. The lobby was cool and comfortable, the prosecco was flowing and there was great classic 50s music playing. It was by far the best experience I've had at a parlor.
