I first took my cat here to see an opthamologist last summer. I had taken him to 2 separate vets for issues with his eye due to allergies and scratching. (We tried a new vet local to us since moving, but decided to go back to the one we trusted, an hour away). Both vets prescribed prednisone drops among trying other things. Our regular vet suggested it was time for a specialist. I'd called several places and no one had an available appointment for months. Some had an office visit charge of $400+ and insisted on doing bloodwork although he already had recent bloodwork done. Finally I called Newtown and got him an appt for the same week, and it was under $300 for the exam. The opthamologist we saw that day is no longer there, but our experience was a positive one. I found out his eye issue was a herpes infection that was not resolving due to the prednisone. Something completely missed by the regular vets. She also recommended entropion surgery for his eyelid that was turned in (later discovering his eyelash had fused to his eye). Fast forward to last week... I brought him back to the vet because of changes in the appearance of his eye. He had a "corneal sequestrum" which is dead scar tissue from trauma. We were monitoring it to make sure it didnt become an issue. Back to the opthomologist in Newtown - this time we saw Dr Crabtree. The cost of the visit was only $202, billed as a followup from last year. I feared surgery, but she told me his eye was attempting to heal itself by pushing out the dead tissue, which was a good thing. Surgery would be $4000, but she is confident he wont need it. She prescribed antibiotics drops but didnt make me buy them there, since I had some at home already. The plan is to recheck him in a few weeks, and remove any loose tissue at that time. Such a relief to hear good news. My worry woth specialists is that they want to do expensive procedures and testing, but this was not the case here. We've had to use the services of this veterinary hospital, after hours, twice in a year. Their services are exceptional. They assess the pet thoroughly and meet with the owners to give them information. Both times, my dog needed to stay overnight. One of the vets would call me to give me information about her condition,progress and treatment plan on a regular basis. I was always given the opportunity to ask questions and get clarification if something was confusing to me. We were always treated with respect and empathy. The prices for their services are quite high but, in my opinion, they are justified given the type of services they provide. read more

Josie was happy and full of energy when we arrived. We were told she had early congestive heart failure, but with meds, she could live another 6-18 months. After tests and oxygen support, we were told there was no fluid in her lungs and that she'd be tired but ready to go home. Minutes after leaving, she collapsed in my lap--limp, foaming at the nose. We rushed back, authorized CPR in a panic (which they charged nearly $600 for), but it was too late. We never got a clear answer about what happened. The vet contradicted herself about what she told us, and they "investigated" themselves and found no fault. Josie walked in happy and full of life and died hours later. I had high hopes, but my experience was negative. There is absolutely no privacy, cases are discussed openly in crowded waiting area. I heard health conditions of every dog or cat in the waiting room, and they heard mine. I would put 0 stars if I could, but unfortunately 1 star will have to do. Do not come here unless you're a dog owner/bringing your dog here. The first red flag was how almost every single animal owner that was here, left crying or upset. These people suck with surgeries! Another red flag was the amount of little pictures they had of cats in the building.. They're super overpriced! Cats are clearly not loved here and they made that clear. I waited for hours just for my cat to get weighed and checked. Then I had to wait even MORE HOURS just for a room. And if that wasn't bad, after we had a chat with the doctors about my cat, we waited for hours just for my cat to get one single vaccine. This place is horrible and doesn't take emergency's serious. Please do not come here and find another vet that actually takes care of your pets well. I hate this place and won't be ever coming here again! The staff here is amazing!! Everyone here is so supportive and welcoming. I could tell that they care about all their patients. The facility is well kept. Even though I walked in with my dog and left without my dog. The staff he is very friendly. They helped me and my family through the rough process of putting out pet down. I liked the honest of the staff here. Shoutout to the Dr. that saw my dog Garrapata she was super welcoming and honest with us about our dog. Honesty and energy like hers make tough situations like this better! Even though I lost my dog, I'm happy that she was well taken care of. They gave us personal time to spend with her before the Dr. administered the euthanasia and let us spend time with her after to say our final goodbye. Thank you so much!! read more

First of all, I had to sit in the waiting room for 2 hours before my cat got attended to. Two hours just to wait for even more hours. It's so obvious that they put dogs over cats because a dog owner that came later than us got attended first?! I got here at 4 pm and left at 9pm.. Dont come here unless you own a dog. Brought my dog in through the ER for an ultrasound. Took them 5 min. They charged me $755.00 which I was okay with. I asked them what the result of the ultrasound was. They wouldn't tell me and told me that was an additional cost that had to be set up as a consultation. Advised me to contact my vet for the results. For that cost they should have told me the result of the test. Would never use them again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. My dog had a second ultrasound done two days later for $430.00 at a far superior facility. Really disappointed with Newtown Veterinary Specialists. read more

I can't possibly post a dispassionate review of Newtown Veterinary Specialists. What I can do is give the facts... NVS is a very large facility staffed with a lot of technicians and veterinarians. They have a complete surgical suite, and modern testing and diagnosing equipment like a CT scan and blood analysis machines. The practice seems to cater primarily to dogs, although I did see a few cats in the cages in the back. I don't know what the percentage of cats to dogs is here, or in other vet offices nearby. I mentioned that they have a large staff. I visited the hospital over the course of four days and there were always two receptionists at the desk when I walked in. Additionally, there were a lot of technicians and I lost track of their names, there were so many. The staff of DVM's is close to 10 or maybe even 12. Over the course of the four days my cat was in hospital I never saw the same doctor twice. I think this lack of continuity in medical care can have dire consequences. Summing up, a large well-equipped hospital facility and a large staff of licensed DVM's and veterinary technicians is expensive to maintain. Don't go in there, or any other veterinary office without expecting to pay a lot of money. It's not like a hospital for humans that is obligated to treat patients regardless of their ability to pay. Veterinary hospitals and animal care clinics require payment for services. Some vets offer something called CareCredit applications. This is simply a credit card that can be used payment for animal care and in some cases, (dental), human care. But it's not cheap! Some people have told me that they think there's some sort of lost-interest credit available or that some vets will work out a payment plan with the clients. In some cases that may be true but the CareCredit card carries a 30% annual percentage rate and there are penalties for late payments and returned payments, (bad checks). I started this review by mentioning how well-equipped this animal hospital is and to that I should add that there is one very special room which they use for euthanizing animals. It's a lot like the other exam rooms that I waited in during the four days that my pet was fighting for his life but it had a few things the other exam rooms don't have. There are brochures advertising cremation urns and support groups for grieving pet owners. There are some fake flowers on the side tables. And there are some lockers. Since I had been waiting four over an hour in this room I looked in these lockers. There are sample urns for your pet's ashes. There are even informational sheet about alternative methods of interment. You can have your pet's ashes poured into concrete forms that then serve as artificial reefs. How thoughtful! The whole experience struck me as this place is no stranger to losing patients. It just all seemed like it was too well-rehearsed and they were ready to give up on my little fur buddy before HE was ready to give up. One more thing: Dr. Adam Porter is the chief veterinary medical officer at NVS. He may be very good at his job, may be, but he is not good with the humans. He talks very fast and he's not afraid to interrupt you if you are expressing an opinion about the care of your pet. read more

This place presents itself as compassionate and caring. That was not my exp. with them. It is a national corp. not an independent business. Their business model takes precedence over any other considerations. They charge $300 to make an appt. for a consultation that can be a 2-3 week wait. They have "specialists" no general vets. There rates exceed anything I've exp. and I've lived in the biggest and most expensive cities in the world. I was referred to a surgeon there,Jason Headrick when my dog tore a tendon in his knee. After a 2 wk period Dr. Headrick performed a knee replacement that so far is healing well. He is a nice man and very competent. Unfortunately and in all liklihood co-incidentally my dog presented with diabetic ketoacidocis,pancreatitis and Cushings Disease. There is a small possibility that the shock of the surgery triggered things that were already there. Dr. Headrick did everything correctly. It was in no way his fault. I've had a very trusted and experienced vet look over all the surgical records and he was in agreement with all the meds and procedures Dr Headrick employed. The problem arose when the other diagnoses were confirmed and I was referred to an internist there to manage my dogs diabetes etc. Her name is Pavlick. After waiting over a half an hour to consult her she became annoyed when we asked her questions and then prevaricated to the mgmnt there that we had made "accusations" against her. During that visit all she was willing or capable of saying was that she wouldn't/couldn't work with us. Her perceived insult from being asked a couple questions became "accusations" to her and we were dismissed. We were not charged for that visit although they have been unresponsive about returning a promised $300+ deposit for the consultation. Multiple requests to speak to the book keeper have gone unanswered. A wk or so after meeting Pavlick I received an email stating we were no longer welcome to come there and the follow up with the surgeon was cancelled based on Pavlicks false accusation. After speaking with mgmnt no willingness on Newtowns part to hear my side of the story or the ability for the surgeon to keep a scheduled appt. I spent thousands of dollars there. The fact that I was never given an opportunity to state my side of that consultation is infuriating. Everyone else I dealt with there from the receptionists onward was great. But Pavlick for reasons I don't understand had us dismissed as patients. That's ok. I have a much more competent and kind vet managing our case now. My regret is that Dr. Headrick made no effort to communicate with us and we were never given the opportunity to tell them what actually went on w/ pavlick. It is for that reason primarily in addition to their exhorbitant fees and lack of care and compassion that I would advise avoiding Newtown Vet Hosp, particularly pavlick. She was unhelpful but worse,dishonest at a time my very sick dog needed help. I fully intend to report this incident and register a complaint to the licensing board and any other entities that govern businesses like this. I suspect I'm not alone in having this problem w/ pavlick. Overall, my exp. there has turned out to be horrible and in spite of a successful surgery every other aspect of my needs coupled with their inflated costs and poor mgmnt are why I gave them this review. If I could have given them no stars I would have. If needed, find a better hospital. This place is awful. read more

Recently, I brought my cat, Sher, to Newtown Veterinary Specialists. Sher, who was 21-years-old, had crossed the rainbow bridge, and I wanted to have her cremated. When I walked in carrying the box that Sher lay in, a staff member immediately came up to me, took the box, while offering her condolences, and ushered us into a private room. Another staff member, who was just as compassionate as the first one, took Sher's remains, and then, helped us fill out the information necessary to have my sweet, little girl cremated. I have only good things to say about how the staff at NVS interacted with us. The quick and friendly service we received was coupled with understanding, empathy and respect. If I could rate them 0 stars I would. In short, these people admitted our dog for treatment, kept him for 16 hours, and then told us we have to find another vet. They told us that if his condition didn't improve overnight, he would need surgery. We and NVS knew that surgery might be a possibility. So, we waited 16 hours, his condition did not improve, they said he needed the surgery, and we were ready for them to perform it. Instead of taking him to surgery, they gave us back our pup and told us to find another vet because they were short-staffed and didn't have enough surgeons to do the procedure! We were like, WHERE can we take him?! HOW can you do this!?!? They did recommend going to Cornell in Stamford (over an hour away in traffic) so we made NVS call ahead to ensure they could take him, and we very reluctantly brought him. We got him to Cornell and learned that because so much time passed, our pup was really close to a perforated intestine! NVS ended up charging us $3000 for this! No treatment and all the undue stress on our pup. When I called to argue the bill, they were very rude, argumentative, and unprofessional, and said "you just don't want to pay your bill." Well, you're darned right I don't!!! I have ZERO issues paying the $10,000 Cornell bill because they treated my dog and he is now on the road to recovery. THANK YOU, CORNELL! They didn't kick him out on the street. NVS diagnosed my dog, waited until it was almost too late, and then booted him out! I am taking legal action on this. Not so much about the money, just the principle of it. Why would an emergency vet take in more patients than they can treat? If they told us right away that they were short-staffed, we would have brought our pup elsewhere. When I asked a fellow veterinarian friend about this, she said it was total mismanagement. They should have anticipated staffing levels and turned patients away (as hard as it is) if necessary. I am VERY disappointed in this place and will NEVER take a pet here again. When you take your family to the emergency, you expect them to get all of the care they need. You might want to think again before bringing your beloved pet here. I called to find out what they charge for cataract surgery because my 3-year-old Frenchie has cataracts in both her eyes. I was told they won't give me pricing without them seeing my dog... Are you kidding you want me to make an appointment so you can charge me for an office visit. It sure seems like the vet offices here in Connecticut care more about money than the animals. I used the same vet in Texas for 20 something years and have never experienced the greed like I have here. Now I understand why there are such horrible reviews for this vet clinic. If you can't give a price than I'm not wasting my time I'll take my dog to the vet in NY because you know what they gave me a price before I took her... Thats a normal request. 1 star for the triage and tech staff that was friendly and helpful. 0 stars for the uncompassionate money hungry doctors. 0 stars for the wait time. I took my senior dog (15 years) who was having diarrhea and some vomiting this past weekend while I was visiting family. I normally live in Washington DC. I gave them his history of liver disease and recently diagonosed kidney disease. After three hours of waiting he went into his exam with the doctor. They then brought my dog back to me. After two hours, the doctor was ready to tell me what was happening. Dr. Zeldis went on to tell me that he is really dehydrated and she thinks it's because of his history. I asked if they would give him fluids. She said she recommends bloodwork and an ultrasound and then they can decide but thinks it will need to be an overnight stay with IV fluids because he's so dehydrated. I would think you'd want to get a dehydrated dog fluids before the tests especially since we had been waiting for 6 hours at this point. So they say they will keep him and do the tests and call me. So I call them 2.5 hours later and the doctor says it has to be a two day hospital stay. At this point it has been almost 9 hours and he has had no fluids or food and was actively getting sicker. I say I opt out and want to get him home so would like them to give him the fluids and anti-nausea. I go in to pick him up and she wants to talk to me. She is rude and tells me "you are not giving him a fighting chance and are condemning him to death because of your feelings" I say I don't want him in a hospital alone for two days especially if this his end of life and may not do much in the end and she says "He is rolled up in a ball in a kennel right now and could care less if he's alone or about your feelings" - which is hard to believe that my dog that follows me around everywhere would be happier in a kennel dehydrated than with me. So she finally agrees to give only the fluids but wants me to come back the next day to run bloodwork again. Which the only reason I saw for that is to continue to judge me and charge me again for a vet exam and bloodwork again, which was confirmed the next day, I literally had to tell her that unless she can tell me that the hospitalization would help and extend his life, I wouldn't change his life and my life to keep him in CT with him possibly dying in a hospital. She couldn't tell me that. I had to remind HER that he is 15 and lived an amazing life and I'd rather have my dog be happy in his last remaining days at home. She didn't think he'd make the drive with my "subpar" treatment idea. He did make the drive and got a pep in a step upon getting home. I took him to see his vet in DC and he said he would have done exactly what I did. The wait times cause negligence and make matters worse if it is a serious illness. read more

Brought my beloved bulldog via emergency room 3 weeks ago was sent to NVS by our veterinarian since my dog was passing out and she needed to see a cardiologist. My vet said she would call NVS to let them know we would be bringing our dog in. On arrival the very rude receptionist was having a conversation with 2 people laughing and carrying on we waited for her attention!! Our dog was then quickly attended to. Dog diagnosed with a heart tumor at the base of her heart causing symptoms of heart failure. She was admitted overnight and started on medication. We were discharged with some medication and to make a follow up appointment in 2 weeks for cardiology follow up. When I called the following Monday to make an appointment I was told that I had to wait a week to make an appointment since cardiology was out for the week?? Finally made an appointment that following week in the meantime medications were running low. We called to get a refill and we're told one of the medication's was not available and they could call it into my pharmacy after a short wait we received call back that dose did not exist for humans and that we could further discuss on follow up visit. Meantime my husband drove to pick up the one medication asked asked about the Lasix the rude receptionist who thinks she's a cardiologist told my husband that our dog was not on Lasix. One of the Tech's came out and enlightened her that the medication she saw on her screen was indeed Lasix. So today on the hottest day of the year we bring our dog in for the cardiology follow up. We were running late due to traffic and called to let the office know we would be 15 minutes late after calling back several times they told us that 15 minutes would be the cut off. We arrived 17 minutes late they took us into a room and told us we could go through the ER or reschedule. Never again will I use this facility. No compassion. I brought my cat into receive care for injuries and a technician took her into be examined immediately. The technician came back and explained what to expect in a very compassionate way. The vetranarian who was there met with me after examining my cat. I was given a good prognosis for my cat and his demeanor was professional yet my cat was given back to me in the waiting room still with blood on her. (I found this out when I got her home. I live only a few minutes from the NVS). The tech that came out did not explain the administration schedule for the medications that I received very clearly and she had an attitude that was unpleasant. A third tech that checked us out did not explain the bill at all. She just said what I owed after processing the insurance and acted like I was taking up too much of her precious time with my questions. She acted annoyed. When I got home I went to put the medications away and clean up the wounds on my cat noticing that there was not enough medication in the bottle I received for the full week of treating her. So only 3 stars because the beginning experience with the 1st tech and vetranarian was good. The end experience with the last 2 technicians, the state of my cat not being cleaned up, the medication explanation and amount paid for short. I was glad for the great prognosis but not the end experience. read more

Although I called the New Haven ER vet saying I am bringing in a dog who has bloody diarrhea for 5 days . ( I was on the West coast when the dog fell ill)There was no doctors on site due to the holiday . I traveled two hours to Newtown the next day seeing a packed waiting room and a sign greeting all that it is a 4-6 hour wait . My dog was assessed along with all the animals arriving for ER care . I understood that it was triage care which means a serious arrival gets seen first even though you have waited three hours. My dog was sick , in pain , but stable. The vet assessed the issue , discussed the possible issues , and what made sense . The staff were busy . The public were not aware of all the medical going on in the rear . As soon as we were seen X-rays were taken , his stool was sent for testing and within an hour we had a treatment plan . Yes, the bill was high but all expenses were reasonable and necessary They did not propose anything ridiculous . A major Thankyou to this vet facility . Referred to a specific specialist by our vet. The consult it's self is 250 which is paid before booking and the quote for the surgery was significantly higher compared to other businesses in the area performing the same work. We were told to have our dog have no food after midnight for his consultation appointment. In hindsight this was completely unnecessary as no actual work was done and no lab tests were done. While everyone seemed nice enough, we have decided to do the surgery elsewhere. read more

Before going into my story, here is something you need to know about Newtown Veterinary Specialists, they are part of the PetVet Care Centers network. PetVet was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts aka KKR in 2017. According to their website: "KKR is a leading global investment firm that manages multiple alternative asset classes, including private equity, energy, infrastructure, real estate, credit and, through its strategic manager partnerships, hedge funds." Now for our experience, we were referred to this clinic by our primary vet. The cost for the consultation $265 must be paid by phone just to schedule an appointment. The doctor we saw diagnosed our cat with entropion and also said he would need a keratectomy procedure to remove a sequestrum in his right eye. We were handed an estimate of almost 6k to 8k for treatment. Now I have been in emergency situations with pets before and have paid thousands of dollars but there was something about this consultation that didn't sit right with me. At no point did the doctor address treating what caused the entropion to begin with, in fact she actually recommended taking him off the medicated eye drops and anti-viral medications that were treating his herpes outbreak. We left and I thought, there has to be another way. Luckily we have connections to a local cat shelter who recommended the vet they use to treat all the cats that come in, a lot with eye issues due to feline herpes virus. Now granted, we did not have the keratectomy performed because the new vet felt it wasn't necessary at this time, but the difference in line item cost is astonishing. Bi-lateral entropion surgery at Newtown $1438 Entropion repair at the new vet $290.40 They will tell you they are one of the few clinics with a veterinary ophthalmologist (which is true) however that does not mean you necessarily need one for your pet. Get a second opinion, make phone calls because they are other more affordable options out there if you do the work to find them. read more

We had a recent scare with our 8 month old puppy yesterday (a Sunday). He has allergies, but we are in the process of finding out what they are. In the morning, he woke up with a few hives, so I gave him Benadryl, per our vet's instructions. About 10 minutes later, the hives turned into giant welts and appeared all over his face and body. He was breathing fine, but this was definitely urgent. NVS is the closest emergency vet to my house, so I called them...I'll admit, I was scared, as I have never had a dog with allergies. They kindly said to bring him in and that he would be seen quickly. When we arrived, he was examined and given a steroid shot to quiet the hives within 15 minutes, as the Benadryl I had given him was keeping him stable in the meantime. After that, we were informed that we would see the vet within 45 minutes. It ended up being more like an hour and a half, but that can happen at any urgent care. The staff was knowledgeable, compassionate, and very helpful. The bill didn't even end up breaking the bank! I was happily surprised. I'm grateful to everyone who helped my baby boy, and I would recommend NVS to anyone! read more

This place is absolutely wonderful. Everyone and anyone I have interacted with have been nothing other than professional, caring and communicative. My dog Nugget is a result of back yard breeding disaster she has needed numerous surgeries and Dr. Weisman and her team have taken the best care of her and treated her like their own. When Nugget had a freak bout of aspiration pneumonia, Dr. Porter called us with updates and recommendations. She made a full recovery over a few days. Many of these reviews do not understand the veterinary community during COVID has been utterly abused, there was not enough help pre-pandemic. Over 11.5 million pets were adopted/purchase during Covid there is still a shortage of vets and staff yet they still show up. They get yelled at, don't have lunch, hardly get bathroom breaks, they miss family events, they are physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted but they still show up. So instead of complaining bc of XYZ remember they are people who have families and they are trying their best and their hardest. They have to juggle exponentially higher amount of cases with smaller staffs most of them working 60+ hours. A thank you and understanding can go along way. RIP OLIVER (4/2006-1/1/2021) I realize that many reviews for vets involve an addition of emotion that may not be present for a restaurant or retail store review. However- after one of the most difficult days of our lives- I believe that it is important to acknowledge the wonderful level of care that was provided at Newtown Veterinary Specialists on the first day of 2021. My husband and I picked up Oliver two days after our return from our honeymoon in July 2006. Oliver was the product of a 50/50 golden doodle and a poodle. He was around 25-30 pounds as a puppy and grew to a maximum weight of 90 pounds in his adult prime. He was the light of our life throughout the duration of our marriage and the birth of our children. When we lost one of our twin daughters in 2008- Oliver sat with me during MANY a tearful moment and was a VERY comforting presence. Today- despite the utter heartache- my husband and I knew that we had to provide Oliver with the opportunity to leave this world with the respect and dignity that he deserves. I am SO grateful for the services provided by Newtown's Veterinary Services during this horrific time. The pandemic did not allow us to accompany Oliver for his intake. After an hour passed, Dr. Tracy Zelda called us and provided tremendously compassionate consultation- even through our tears on speakerphone. After another 30ish minutes- we were invited into the facility (we did all payments on the phone prior to us entering the building). My husband and I were led to a small room with peaceful music playing and comfortable chairs. Every aspect of this traumatic experience was carefully choreographed by the NVS staff. They brought our old buddy into the room so we could say goodbye. There was absolutely NO pressure for time- but we did not want to prolong the pain for ANY of us- especially Oliver. After some private time- we knocked on the door- Dr. Zelda came in with the meds and was just wonderful. She explained what she was administering all while providing comforting words to us as we bawled. I appreciated her candor and her support with our difficult decision. I wish I had taped the more than ONE HOUR conversation I had this afternoon with one of the self-proclaimed heads of NVS to discuss the unacceptably awful circumstances surrounding my dog's death exactly one month ago today. We had been to NVS twice within barely one week, two very taxing, stressful 3-plus hour round-trip drives and hours of waiting in an overcrowded waiting room for tests then another wait for consultation (a separate charge). I already have had my credit card company's issuing bank stop payment on all charges and am disputing them solely on principal. For those familiar, it would be a magnificent piece for a Ted Talk Radio Show that I would submit, entitled: DEATH AND HUMANITY. (Aside - there are several brightly lit young women in age or heart who most likely are sitting behind the front desk trying to run the show at NVS and they shine but in the end it didn't matter, not their fault in any way.) So this listing will, the moment I finish writing, editing it and hitting send, appear as the most current - but ONLY if - as I had to, to write any review at all - elevate it by giving it 1 star. Very soon, I may try rating it 5 STARS ... then like a Trojan horse cut and paste what I have written here and then my message, revised appropriately, will be THE MOST CURRENT 5 STAR rating if someone is checking Yelp but not smart enough to dig at least a little deeper. I'm aiming low (get it?, by hitting 5 stars!) ... Back to the reason for writing: WARNING!!!!! IF, BASED ON A PREVIOUS AND TRUSTED VET, YOU WERE TOLD YOUR PET NEEDS A SPECIALIST, DO NOT GO TO NVS IF THE DIAGNOSIS IS ANY SERIOUS and/or POSSIBLE END STAGE ILLNESS. OR IF IT IS SIMPLY OLD AND SEEMINGLY HEALTHY! OR PERHAPS - GO SOMEPLACE ELSE, IF POSSIBLE, FOR ANY REASON AT ALL THAT YOU NEED A SPECIALIST UNLESS PERHAPS YOU ARE WORKING AT THE LOCAL LEVEL WITH AN ONGOING TRUSTED VETERINARIAN OVERSEEING YOUR PET'S CARE AND THEN GOOD LUCK. and obviously don't go there if you don't have a lot of money THIS IS NOT THE PLACE IT HOLDS ITSELF OUT TO BE ON ITS WEBSITE period full stop. This place is a total money hungry place. Yeah they saved our friend and the people were nice but our pet went into surgery for one thing and then ended up having a major limp and in a few days they did X-rays and bloodwork at anouther $1000 . Highly recommend this place. It has taken me a while to write this review. The receptionists are pretty standard, they could be more friendly. I love that it's open 24/7. I have given it a five star review because of Dr. Ariel Wickers. I was in an unimaginable position last month with my cat Ruby crashing from renal disease. I went to many other vets, none of them helped me to understand this diagnosis or come to a decision on what to do. I came to Dr Ariel Wickers and she treated me like a person, not just a patient. She sat with me, offered me helpful information from her veterinarian background but also spoke to me from the heart. I could never thank her enough for that. I was at my limit so discouraged on what to do. We ended up having to put my Ruby down. I am gutted over it, but Dr Wickers helped the situation be easier. I will forever miss my Ruby. This Dr deserves all the praise and recognition. She is an asset to this establishment. I'm honored to have met her in one of my darkest moments and will never forget the kindness she showed us during a heart wrenching situation. read more

Worst Vet ever....STAY AWAY*** ZERO STARS After being told on phone the bill would be $262. I get there and they say $599. And tried to add a bunch more services. Yes I got angry (after driving 90 mins.) but was never disrespectful to the young lady who took care of us, she was very pleasant. We left without using their services and went to a better Vet. Then they send me a letter saying I screamed at their employee which was not true, they went on to say I can no longer use their services. They never bothered to talk to me about the event just assumed their employee was not over reacting. This place is a joke and now I understand why they get so many negative reviews. read more

My puppy had maybe swallowed a pill or something and I got a call at work saying he was swaying, falling over, throwing up and drooling. I called Newtown knowing they are the closest to new Milford. Since I wasn't there and didn't know exactly what my THREE POUND three month old chihuahua swallowed, they didn't classify it as an emergency so I couldn't bring him Monday night around 8-9 pm. Very disappointed in this veterinary clinic. He could of died. Thank god for Guardian Veterinary Specialists of Brewster, NY. They are a bit pricy without insurance, but do their job and save lives. Would not recommend Newtown for emergencies. read more

Despite coming here as one of our beloved family members took his last breath we had a wonderful experience. The team there is the most caring team. From my initial call that was after 9pm they helped me look online to try to find and an in home vet that would come out that late (which we could not find). They allowed all our family to come in with masks on due to the circumstances. Everyone was extremely empathetic and didn't rush us. We had such a great experience that we will be switching to this location for our other dogs even though it is in another town. read more

My cat has been seen here for both oncology and emergency services. Wait times for ER are dependent on severity of case and what other cases are also being presented. Ex. My cat needed part of his tail amputated due an accident but was otherwise stable. Another more immediate and unstable patient came in and was rightfully seen/ treated before my cat. I was able to drop him off overnight so I didn't have to wait there through the other patient's emergency. They called me when he was all done and updated me. Would recommend you call ahead if you have an emergency so they know you are coming. Have had nothing but pleasant interactions with all members of staff. My cat can be spicy at the vet and they handled him well. Medicine practiced here is great and affordable in comparison with other emergency services in the area. The oncologist just left but am planning on working with the new vet they hired. My cat's cancer has been stable for 2 years now! read more
