They gave me prescriptions for an eye condition that seriously needs to be treated or I would lose eye sight and yet they never bother to work with the insurance to obtain approval for that drug forcing me to see another doctor so I can get treated. Last time they gave me a new prescription (I have stigmatism) that I could not wear. When I look at a square object it becomes so distorted that it is almost a diamond. Had an 11 o clock appointment on March 12 2024 told them I needed to be back at work promptly by…read more12:30. Assured me I'd be back with plenty time to spare. Never updated me that the doctor was behind seeing patients as time continued to pass didn't get me back until 11:55 front desk was very unprofessional. I was subsequently late back to my professional career. Later that day returned to get lenses with my new prescription. Another woman behind the counter was also rude and unprofessional told me my insurance didn't cover it even though it does. Never even bothered to look it up despite me telling her I am covered. Think she assumed based on how I look that there's no possible way I could have adequate insurance coverage. Very hurtful and disrespectful. Then informs me of a policy which costs 25 dollars to bring your own frames while simultaneously asking me to sign a waiver that makes them not liable or responsible if my new frames are damaged. This is clearly a moral hazard. I asked what's the failure rate that such damages occur, she refused to answer. I asked who is the manufacturer that does the work she refused to tell me. I asked if she could contact them to inquire, she said she cannot. I asked for the contact info so that I may ask myself, she replied "well they don't want people calling harassing them." Confused I asked if me calling them is considered harassment. She rolled her eyes and explained it was not (I already knew that) again I think she said this based on how I look despite the fact that I never gave her a reason to believe this other than what she assumed about me. Strange that they would want to take my money and have my business while simultaneously refusing to tell me who I am doing business with. Seems like in all likelihood if I would have signed the waiver and sent my frames they would have been deliberately broken so that I be forced to buy a complete pair of frames and lenses from them. Disgusting behavior from the employees and a clear moral hazard/predatory policy masquerading as a legitimate business. I told her have a nice day despite all of this, she was shocked that I could still manage to have manners at the end of her gross behavior and lack of professionalism. Ironically I went to LensCrafters and they had no such policy/waiver/fee. Probably because they aren't running a scam. Doctor I saw was great sadly the front office/retail staff was so horrible I wouldn't go back if they were the only one in a 100 mile radius. I advise you don't either.

Not only are the frames gorgeous, but, more importantly, the lenses are exceptional. The service is by far the best. Professional, , courteous, and truthful describes the staff. Bar none Shalamar is the very best in the state. If you need glasses, this is where you should go. They are a 10 out of 10.

So, I made an appointment for an eye exam as I needed contact lenses and glasses and was way…read moreoverdue for an exam. The price for the exam was $65 which seemed reasonable compared with $125 at an place closer to my apartment. I showed up for the first appointment and while Kim, the receptionist, was nice enough, she claimed she had left me a message saying my appointment was delayed and I wouldn't be seen for another 3 hours. I don't drive (am disabled after a broken neck and multiple TBI's) so I didn't really have a choice; I opted to wait the 3 hours till the doctor would see me. This was the first time I've ever had a contact lens fitting where the doctor used his own, unwashed hands to put the contacts in my eyes. A week or so later, during this trial period of testing the lenses, I developed a discharge from my right eye and the lens itself was likely defective as it kept popping out of my eye. I called to make another appointment and explained the issue with the lens popping out. The doctor and his son (I'm guessing they are related somehow) didn't seem too happy to give me another pair of lenses to try out. It's like jeeze, you guys aren't paying for the lenses, what's the beef? Oh and then I was shamed for having Medicaid. They apparently saw me as some kind of "free loader" and treated me rudely. My case worker was with me for the second appointment and we both looked at each other like is this really happening? Are we really being treated like this? The doctor made a particularly rude comment to my case worker and then plainly ignored her when she asked him a question. He muttered some off color joke under his breath - it was super uncomfortable. The really fun part was when I went to choose a pair of glasses from the Medicaid section of available frames. I prefer to have larger lenses/frames as they help me see much better. I picked out the biggest frames in the Medicaid selection and boy, the man who "helped" me was not pleased at all. Again, these are glasses for me, not this dude. Why was he so upset I chose glasses which were covered by Medicaid and available in the section of their store FOR MEDICAID GLASSES. This guy kept telling me, or trying to tell me, there was no way they could put lenses in the frames I had chosen, and seemed appalled overall by my selection and persistence. He then tried to charge me an additional $40 bucks (talked down from his original pitch of $60) to put lenses in the frames. Dude, the glasses are covered by Medicaid, you can't charge people for glasses that are covered by this plan. Ugh. When I went back for the last time to get the new trial lenses and get a copy of my prescription, the Medicaid nazi was again seemingly appalled by my presence. How dare I have an eye exam, a trial pair of lenses and a pair of glasses covered by Medicaid? When I asked for a copy of my prescription, he struggled to use the printer/copier, I assume it hadn't been used for a long time and/or the guy just didn't know what he was doing or how to operate the machine. He begrudgingly gave me my prescription, though of course the doctor failed to indicate which eye had whatever number the prescription is. Really not looking forward to calling for clarification but oh well, looks like I'll have to. I obviously won't be going back to Shalmar for further eye exams, and can't recommend this place to others. It's unfortunate as they do have a nice selection of eyewear but meh, you can find great glasses elsewhere and be treated with respect, regardless of what insurance you have. One and only star goes to Kim, for at least attempting to be pleasant. I can't imagine having to work in such a small space with that doctor and his rude son. She's probably seen a lot.

I called in the morning and asked for an appointment, because I was seeing a really big floater in…read moremy right eye and since I am very nearsighted, I wanted to make sure that it was just a floater and nothing serious. I was told that they don't have any availability and the next appointment would be in 4 months. All they could do was write down my number and call me in case of a cancellation (they never called). Luckily, I called another ophthalmologist practice and the receptionist there knew that a big floater combined with heavy nearsightedness could be something serious, so she gave me an appointment within an hour. It turned out it wasn't a floater, but a tear in my retina and I needed emergency laser surgery that same afternoon. I was told it that it was a good thing that I came in that same day, because had I waited any longer it could have turned into a detached retina. I cannot fathom how an ophthalmologist practice does not know that a big floater in very nearsighted people can mean a retinal tear or detachment and therefore is considered an emergency. I have never encountered a medical practice that did not make availability for emergencies or at least told the patient calling with such urgent symptoms to seek medical help elsewhere that same day. Maybe it was for the best that this office didn't have any availability for me, I have serious doubts now about their competency.

And they seem to take lots of insurance and make it all very easy. I've seen two optometrists and they were both great. They really make sure you get the right contacts. I had to go back a bunch of times to find ones that worked for me. The selection of glasses are great. They have cheapo ones, pricey ones, and most importantly to me, lots of good ones in the middle.
