Like previously mentioned, obviously Home Depot with it's spaciousness, carries a lot more, but this place bests HD in just about every other category. I've never actually left here without finding what I was looking for. And unlike HD, the employees here are friendly and are knowledgeable. The staff has always been pleasant, from when I used to come here as a kid with my father, or now whenever I come in there 20+ years later. It's almost a throwback to the way things used to be (and should still be) about them being happy to have your business. The store renovated itself quite nicely during the last maybe 10 years. I'm just grateful this place remains standing when so many have faltered to the bigger chains. A true treasure to the area.

But OH... how we miss this hardware and the older owner's knowledge and wonderful help! I LOVE family owned older hardware stores . I love quality tools and secretly wished I had the training and experience to be able to use everything in renovation/ construction. Here, the owner has spent years learning what his community needs and he offers wonderful variety and choice in many hardware product areas. He is especially attentive hardworking gracious and accommodating -- service is outstanding. AND if he doesn't have it, he offers to try to find it! I really avoid Home Depot..... Lowes is not as bad, but these old fashioned neighborhood hardware stores may not be the least expensive alternative , but the friendship relationship hands on practical advice and wonderful help create an always pleasant experience. And, GREATLY add to a comfortable bond to one's neighborhood.

Why exhaust yourself at those big box hardware stores when everything you need is at Readers?…read moreHere's why Readers is better: * Time is money. Accomplishing an errand at Readers takes 5 minutes -- literally. A trip to the big box store kills most of the morning. * Sales staff are knowledgeable and plentiful. No need to plead for someone to help you. If you live locally, you probably already know them. * Inventory is a known quantity, and the staffperson generally comes with you to look for what you want. * If something doesn't work, they take it back -- no questions asked. And no long wait at a backed-up customer service desk. * Small doesn't mean less inventory. Readers has most everything. * Fantastic location in the center of Dobbs Ferry's downtown near the post office, grocery store, shoe repair and other shops, so can tackle all your errands in one stop. Bee Line bus service to Readers especially on weekdays is frequent and the stop is down the block. On-street parking and public lots require a shorter walk than the ones at the big boxes; its totally worth the meter price. * They deliver some big items.

Instead of trying to help me, the senior guy in the store (the owner?) inserted himself in the conversation and proceeded to humiliate me by telling me there was nothing wrong with it. Foley's had BETTER PRICE than the Supermarket!…read more I decided to buy a Fix-A-Flat tire repair product for my son (who had a flat the week before) I went to my local supermarket, found Fix-A-Flat priced at $14, but figured Foley's might have it...and I like to patronize local businesses when possible. Turned out it was $12, two dollars cheaper, at Foley's, but I realized something else: Auto care, tools, and garden supplies are bread-and-butter to a hardware store, while they're just convenience items for a supermarket: stores like Foley's have to be well-stocked, and have knowledgeable staff who can answer questions. So now I will make Foley's my first choice for tools, because they know them best. But don't worry, supermarkets in Larchmont and Mamaroneck: If Foley's starts selling carrots and cauliflowers, I'll still buy them from you.
