We've been dealing with old- very old kitchen spotlights. So when we gutted out our kitchen, there was no way in hell we were salvaging those as well as our under-cabinet lights. Our contractor referred us to come here on Central Ave in Yonkers because of their reputation, quality and variety. Lights on Design was like a crisp breath of fresh air when we stopped in here. Main floor is mostly crystal grand chandeliers, attractive contemporary style lights, some 1960s-inspired and more. And, if you're on their website, you can shop by style, fixture type and browse through some of their inspiration gallery photos. Paula was a doll, showed us the upstairs filled with mostly pendant lighting, floor lamps and some smaller chandeliers. Since so much has changed in lighting trend, getting rid of our wrought iron dining area chandelier had to happen as well- especially since it has a country-chicish look I don't like anymore in my home. There's another lighting store on Central Avenue which we could've gone to- but based on reviews, so glad this place came out on top. Owner Glenn, was helpful, patient and friendly. Even when hubs and I didn't find what we wanted on their website, Paula helped locate it in their paper catalog. I loved how she gave us expert advice on how to choose fixtures and even determined which size was best for our space. She was our lighting whisperer. read more

Had purchased from Lights On before and received very good service from Denise and Glenn. However I visited the store looking for another ceiling light and received quite a different turn out ..Denise greeted me quite graciously as I arrived as usual and began to show me the new lights that had arrived ..I continued to look around and at this point Glenn ( the owner ) followed me to the 2nd floor as I looked around didn't find anything and as I was walking down to the first he randomly says "We get New stuff every 4 months so YOU don't have to come every week ..I mean you must have a "Boring life " if you come every week here to look " ..applaud and surprised that an owner of a small business would say this to a customer ..I replied " I don't come here every week " ..to which he responded "well I was just exaggerating "..as I finished saying " and yes I do have a boring life right now because I have had to slow down " ..as I approach the exit ..Glenn repeats "Remember Don't come back til 4 months later " ..I turned and replied " Happy Holidays " as I left this store Numb from the way in which the owner Glenn spoke to me .. I simply have to say it will be the last time I will ever enter this store ..and for you Glenn to respond on your website that You and I were Joking around is another shock ..I Do not know you at all except as a loyal customer to possibly make another purchase at your store ..total lie ..I am speechless !! read more

A few months ago I purchased my pendant lights "Hubbardton forge".I absolutely love them. Glenn the owner was so sweet and charming.Gave me a great price and made me feel very comfortable with my purchase. Fast forward..... when purchasing my lights I bought the bulbs and was given two different colors. Glen made this right by hand delivering to Manhatten without an issue.Who does this? Initially happy with Lights on Design. Paula was kind and helpful. Glenn, also, showed interest in keeping his customer happy. I bought about 5k work of lighting including over $500 worth of LED bulbs for my chandelier. One of the bulbs started flickering and blew out within weeks, another just blew out. I sent Glen a photo and asked if LED bulbs should last longer than this and he said, "the chandelier came with cheap bulbs". I reminded him that I purchased the bulbs from him after he told me that he only sells "high quality bulbs", at which point he said, "I'm willing to give you a new bulb, bring in the broken bulb and I'll give you another". The chandelier is installed on a 20' ceiling. How am I supposed to change it? I was so annoyed because he said he is "willing" to help out a customer with something that he should immediately rectify. He is not doing me a favor by actually providing me something I already paid for. Really disappointed in his communication and product. read more

Terrific personal service, outstanding selection of products, competitive prices. We first found a few fixtures that were exactly what we were looking for. Then Glenn and Paula were extremely creative and helpful finding fixtures for several problematic rooms where we had no idea what would work although we had definite ideas of the aesthetic we wanted. Not only did they show us fixtures we had overlooked in their store but they also spent considerable time on manufacturers' websites and catalogues once they understood our design goals. And they found perfect fixtures for each of those rooms. The service was exemplary. When one large expensive specially-ordered fixture turned out to have a defective section, Glenn immediately contacted the manufacturer and arranged a replacement, personally picked up the defective fixture in Manhattan and then delivered the expedited replacement faster than promised. Went there today with my Niece. She was looking for 3 ceiling fans. They were very helpful. She found 2 that she liked, but she wanted them in different finishes they had to be ordered. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN THIS STORE AGAIN..... I've purchased a few thousand dollars worth of merchandise from Glen over the years. I sent my daughter there after she bought her home in Rye, and also referred others. I never had an issue and was always pleased with both the merchandise and excellent pricing. Until this week.... I remember reading a terrible review from someone who visited Lights on Design while she had her young child with her. She wrote how rude Glen was that led to her walking out. I found it hard to imagine. UNTIL LAST FRIDAY..... I stopped in at 5:30 with my 3 y/o granddaughter in tow. I was well aware of Glen's apparent disdain for children in his store. I get it. I simply needed to replace a glass dome from a ceiling fan/light fixture WHICH I PURCHASED FROM HIM less than 2 years ago. I even had the damaged one with me to streamline the order. I was holding onto my granddaughter's hand and she was being whiny and restless. I asked Glen to please ask her to hold my hand and behave. Kids listen to others and usually respond willingly..... he kept staring at her and said nothing. I asked him again. Nothing. He didn't acknowledge me. Just kept staring as she was trying to wiggle away. It was bizarre. He told me I had to hold her hand. Seriously??? I'm pathetically screeching now "ask her to hold my hand!!!" He then comes out of his catatonic stupor to say, "I thought we were friends". Wtf indeed! He then blatantly REFUSED to help me. "We don't have that. I don't know what it is. I can't get it".... I told him I bought it there, Minka brand. "I don't know what it is. I don't have it....." I stormed out vowing to never step foot in there again. He had no intention of helping me the moment I stepped foot in his store with a child. She was in my care and not a threat to his merchandise at any time. I went in and described what I was looking for. The owner showed me something just like I had described, and I took it home. I waited a few days before assembling it and saw that one of the sockets was broken. I called the store, and they said they're order another. The company insisted that I take a photo of the broken socket, so I did and sent it to Lights On Design. A week later they called to tell me the lamp had come in, so I picked it up, put it together, and found that the same socket was broken. When I called the store, they were very apologetic and offered to assemble another lamp in the store and deliver to my home - free of charge. I was upset about the defective lamps, but it wasn't their fault, and they went out of their way to make it up to me. That's excellent customer service - something you're unlikely to get with an online store. read more

I would have to say that I was a bit disappointed over the negotiations over a lamp I tried to purchase. The owner refused to sell the floor model at a discounted price . Something that's standard in the industry. Instead, he offered to throw in for free the expensive light bulbs. A day or so later. She even installed it for an extra fee and returned to fix it after the first time when we realized my 1920s co-op didn't have the proper electrical box. Visited on a Sunday. I visited the upstairs lighting studio and worked with Yvonne. Main floor is mostly huge chandeliers (huge!). Yvonne was great and knew her stuff. Made several great suggestions. All the while she's the only sales person on the second floor dealing with 3 different groups of customers. She handled it really well and spent just enough time with all of us. She was able to answer questions and find out more info if the answer wasn't obvious (re: height sizing of a particular piece).
