Combo with general tso, fried shrimp and egg roll
    Scott H.

Solid American Chinese. I got the combo with general tso, fried shrimp and shrimp egg roll. It's not common you get a shrimp egg roll in a combo. I'm always wary of egg rolls. Usually they are stuffed with nasty cabbage. This had cabbage which wasn't too offensive but just had two small pieces of shrimp. I like a more uniform filling. Room to improve here. The fried rice did no harm. Decent enough. The fried shrimp was a little overcooked but appreciated the shrimp to batter ratio. The general tso was very good. It had a really unique batter. It almost reminded me of a meat jun batter. Kind of light and eggy. I'd take all of my tso like this. The seasoning while weak in the sauce did not offend. Sometimes it's too acidic or metallic but this was just mid. I'd come back if I was ever in town again.

Haven't been in a few years, came randomly on a Saturday night. The food was great! Huge portions, tasted fresh and had great flavor. Clean dining area. Service was friendly but felt like we were a little rushed to get in and out. I think next time I'll order takeout instead of dining in. The only other downside was there was no kids menu, so the portions for my kid was huge-

I want to update my review. Since my last one we have learned something. We go when Lee is working. She is over the top excellent at service and so sweet. We love their food but the other server is just plain rude. It affects our experience so we found out Lee's schedule and go when she is there. As for the food. We love to get the lunch special. My husband always gets the Kung pao trio and loves it. I've tried the cashew chicken, sesame beef, general tso chicken, Kung pao shrimp, Mongolian beef, subgum chow mein and the twice cooked pork. All were excellent. What I do not care for is their sweet and sour sauce. It's not sweet enough for me. More like the Chinese ketchup. One of the menu items that intrigued me is on the soup section call Beef Mushroom Noodle with gravy. I finally decided to try it and omg! It was fantastic! Fresh crisp vegetables. Tender yummy beef. Perfectly cooked noodles and a rich broth. And it was huge! Enough for 3 meals for me. It has baby corn in it but I can't eat corn so I took it out before I tried it and then took this picture.

This review is tough, because I often have a 4 star experience here, then on some occasions it's just not consistent. This was one of those inconsistent times. I ordered to go, and the service was fabulous, and the wait time was exactly what they told me 15 minutes. Sadly this time the food wasn't to their normal standard. Pork Egg Foo Young was slightly burned, which had a negative impact on the flavor. Generally speaking the flavor was still good, but normally it's amazing. The crispy Noodle Chicken Chow Mein was really bland as it was missing salt. Sweet and sour shrimp was exactly as expected. This lesser experience will not stop us from going back here (unless future experience prove this as their new norm). I'm gonna assume it was just a bad day this time around.

Shrimp with poop veins still in them

If your expecting friendly service this is "fast and furious" but not especially friendly, literally no words other then taking our order and the bare minimum interaction; lots of eye rolling if you ask for something. Typical Chinese, nothing special or unique. Tasty enough. Make sure if you order fried shrimp that you check for the poop vein, mine had not been removed and don't know if this is the type of shrimp they use which is not what you want to eat or just my luck? A noisy little place with no music, but lots of chatter, the air is on in the middle of a cold rainy day so had to wear a coat through the meal, but typical Chinese restaurant decor.

I walked in excited, but I can't say that I felt the same way walking out. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed with this self serve hot pot. Let me walk you through my experience. I walked into a nearly empty restaurant and was greeted promptly. I was excited to see that the place was clean, well decorated, and had a simple drink, appetizer, and broth menu on the TV screens. I mentioned to the host that it was our first time here and that we would need some instructions. He just pointed out that the bowls are here, get your ingredients there, and pay over there. I was expecting a warmer welcome than that, but oh well, I dismissed it since I'm aware of the structure and he was young. The ingredients were neatly placed in containers that were well maintained. They seemed to be kept up with the supply and demand. However, I can easily see the cross contamination between raw meats and vegetables because there weren't additional tongs available to keep the ingredients separated, except for the one tong I was holding. Since all the food will be cooked together, I guess it would be fine...? We walked back and forth multiple times around the ingredients, not because there were too many to choose from, but because there was not enough variety. I was hoping there would be more noodles or more Asian green veggies to pick from, instead of broccoli, lettuce, or cauliflower. I do not feel like there was anything exciting or unique about their ingredients for me to rave about. Once we were done adding ingredients to our bowl, we went up to the register to weigh our food. It was $14.99 per pound for the first 5 soup flavors which were Classic Ma La Tang, Beef Bone, Rich Tomato, Mushroom, and Spicy Szechuan Dry Mix, and $16.99 for the Hot and Spicy Szechuan Dry Pot. I picked my broth and paid, then sat down and waited for my meal. Food did not take long for them to bring out; however, my soup did not come out hot. Was I expecting it to be boiling hot? No. But hot enough for all my food to be cooked well so I don't get sick. If you want a comparison, if you have ever eaten pho at a restaurant, the soup is hot. Well, my soup at Big Hey Hot Pot was not as hot as the pho soup. One thing that I was happy about was the sauce bar. They had everything you can imagine, such as sesame sauce, soy sauce, spicy sauce, hoisin sauce, garlic, onion, chopped green onion, cilantro, and peanuts. This sauce bar was unlimited and did not count towards your weight. I went back multiple times to get more sauce. Overall, this was not as satisfying as I thought it would be. I wish I had better service, more variety of ingredients to pick from, and hotter soup. Plenty of parking. Cards accepted. I will not be back.

After our last visit, I fear things have changed. The place still looks the same; clean and orderly but no art, no shrines, no decor whatsoever. Only the sight of busy cooks banging sizzling woks in the open kitchen and the smells of the dishes give the cuisine away. As we entered, everything looked as it always has. We were a bit surprised at the emptiness of the dining area. Early evenings are normally bustling with dine-in customers, and the phone constantly ringing for take-out. Besides us, there was only one other table occupied. The menu looked the same, but when we ordered some old time family favorites, they each were disappointing. Celery dominated the veggie dish, (Buddhist Delight) with no detectable asian spices and scant traces of the other veggies promised. The cashew chicken was more skin than meat, and minimal cashews. I don't know for certain, but I suspect the place has changed ownership, or management or both. If that's the case, it's a shame because the place really was a neighborhood gem for many years. We will likely give it another shot, but with so many fantastic Asian restaurants on the SE side, we won't be back for a spell.

There was a lady handling the serving duties and she was excellent handling the few of us who were seated in the dining area. I assume someone else handled the lounge as several people entered that as I ate lunch. The soup was quite good, not too peppery but loads of flavor. The General Tsao was a very good representation of American Chinese food. The flavors really popped and there was quite enough to fill up even me. All in all, I really enjoyed Yu's even though it is decidedly in need of an interior upgrade. Skip the truck stop food and give Yu's Garden a try.
