First time at Uncle Tsangs but have been at this great food truck pod many times. There are 7 other trucks, beer garden and table both out in the open and covered spaces. We ordered the Crispy Veggie Wontons, Veggie Egg Rolls, Sweet and sour tofu, Imitation Teriyaki Beef Rice and Eggplant Chow Fun. The staff was friendly, helpful and told us how long it would take to come out. Both appetizers (wontons and egg rolls) were both pretty good. The eggplant chow fun was my favorite and I'm not usually a big fan of eggplant. The sweet and sour tofu was really good with great sauce and large amounts of both tofu and veggies. The Imitation Teriyaki Beef Rice was an issue. While the imitation beef had good flavor, it was SO chewy. I'd come back but avoid the beef. read more

It's a good cart inside of a pod. The pod has plenty of carts all organized in a square with a seating area all in the middle and a heated tent and covered area. This is one of the few carts that is open according to their hours. It's a couple inside. Working together. They take the orders and cook everything from scratch. It can take a little longer than you are used to. Remember you don't want fast food you want good food. Everything i e ever gotten off their menu has been excellent. The spring rolls. The pot stickers. Teriyaki chicken. I really don't know why they don't open a regular restaurant. The food can take a little longer but it's worth it. read more

I kept hearing that Uncle Tsang's is not to be missed...and I'm so glad that I didn't miss it! There were so many choices, it was really hard to decide. I ended up getting the bok choy and mushrooms in black bean sauce..it was so good! I also got potstickers, and they were huge and some of best potstickers I've ever had! This place definitely gives generous portions! Uncle Tsang's is located in the Piknik Park food carts, in SE Portland. There were a few other people waiting for their orders, and they all were customers of Uncle Tsang's! When I first started looking for parking, I kind of stressed out, there wasn't very much street parking. I turned into the parking lot between Piknik Park and New Seasons and parked there. This was so good! I was suffering from Covid and wanted nothing more than Chinese food. My husband went to pick me up some Sichuan eggplant and crispy pumpkin from the food cart. His only complaints were parking and how long it took to get the order. The portions were so huge and generous, I ate it over 2.5 days. Everything tasted amazing. It sustained me. In fact, it may have contributed to my fast recovery (pending CDC analysis and peer-reviewed virology report ) But in all seriousness, this is some excellent vegan Chinese that scratches the Chinese food itch. I only wish they published a current menu on social media or something -- since I couldn't go in person, I had to rely on a few options based on old menu photos others provided! read more

Very tasty vegetarian Chinese food. Make sure you plan ahead when coming here. They often take 45-60 minutes but the food is good and many options can be make gluten free. They have a big menu with pictures and symbols for dietary options, which makes it easy to pick. We've had their chow mein a few times (10yo's fave), Singapore noodles, & Buddhist delight chow fun and have enjoyed all. read more

I'm not exactly sure how to best categorize Uncle Tsang's Kitchen. It is a cross-over restaurant that pulls together novel vegan cooking and traditional Chinese (SE Asian) style dishes. It's a tough place to truly pin down; and, it is so quintessential Portland. Where else do you find plant-based beef dishes in Szechuan Style cuisines? Oh, and in a food truck, indiscriminately located in a southeast neighborhood food pod. What's not too love about Uncle Tsang's Kitchen! I must admit the menu is a bit intimidating for first time customers (oh heck, it's intimidating no matter how many times I frequent the place). Take your time ordering. Ask for direction. Don't be 'afraid' of the plant-based meat selections. And, go family style so you can try a variety of bold and spicy options. You will not be disappointed. It seems like everyone has already said how awesome this food cart is. And they are not wrong. This steadily humming food cart churns out hunger killers without fail. The cart is run by a sweet couple who gives you exactly what you need with a smile on their face and a splash of love in every to-go box. I am not a vegetarian by any stretch of the word, but the Kung Pao Eggplant was most delicious. It was tasty with the right amount of texture to soak in the flavor without making it mushy. It marked as spicy on the menu, but I found it to be fairly mild. My spice threshold is relatively high though. I bet they could spice it up if I asked though(reminder to myself for next time)! Nevertheless, it's the -best- Chinese food in town. BEST. Not best vegetarian, just best. Portland definitely struggles with Chinese cuisine, and I am really not sure why. Perhaps it's a mystery that only Scooby-Doo (+ Scrappy) could solve. Oh and by the way, yes, it comes with rice too. The flavors and portions were bountiful and satisfying in both regards. You will not be going hungry here! I found myself pairing this entree with some Korean chicken from across the way only because my eyes listened to my Jersey Devil-sized hunger, but that worked out well since I had plenty of leftovers. The best thing about leftovers is that you get to enjoy that the sweet food nirvana not once, but twice! I will gladly try more on the menu. I've wanted to write a review of Uncle Tsang's Kitchen since first ordering food from this food cart. After all, I eat vegetarian and how many all veggie food carts are there, even in Portland. But given the sheer scale of the place's ambition, it seemed inappropriate to pen a review without sampling "more of the goods." So I have held off--til now. It's still not really possible to do a comprehensive review, because to the best of my knowledge, this is the most extensive menu of any food cart in all of Portland. In fact, if you think about old school Chinese restaurant menus that go on for pages, your head will be in the right place. Not that there are any pages to their picture menu. But I counted over 70 options. To pull that off in a food cart is remarkable, especially since this is a fully vegetarian Chinese restaurant with dozens of vegetables and countless treatments. All the old standards here, made with plant-based protein which is really well done. Beef with Broccoli? Check. Sesame Beef? Check. Cold sesame/peanut noodles? Check. Potstickers, dumplings, scallion pancakes? Check, check, check. But there are also Chinese mustard greens, yu choy and bok choy. Crispy pumpkin. Cauliflower. Cabbage, cucumber, green beans. Szechuan pickle. Quinoa. I think they must have a fourth dimensional walk in refrigerator hiding out in the cart, because all the vegetables are fresh and vibrant, and I've never yet been told that they are sold out of something. First off, I've never yet had a bad dish here. Some may not be my favorite, even as they are authentically* correct. For example, their eggplant chow fun with black bean sauce has nothing to do with thai noodles. Meltingly delicate eggplants bathed in a thick, savory Cantonese sauce are slathered on top of the noodles. You the diner have to extract some noodles to eat with the eggplant. I haven't been to China, so can't say if you'd find this there, but it's authentically right at home from a 1970's style American Chinese. It was tasty, but not the sort of dish I go for. Too gloppy. But it is a perfectly executed example of its type. Compare that to this lovely couple's pan fried dumplings. The dumpling dough is thin, yet remains toothsome. There's a slight crispiness where the shell has cartelized in the wok, but without ever turning crunchy. The filling itself, redolent with ginger, is packed in there--so many placed put a half or full teaspoon in and call it quits. This generosity appears in almost every dish. Did I say how delicious these were? They are. The Chinese mustard greens are neon green, tender and al dente simultaneously, oozing in garlic, without it ever tasting raw or overpowering. The chef knows his trade. Salt and pepper tofu? Crispy shell. Mild salt hit to the tofu, but then a bite into a spicy green pepper. Perfect. The curry sauce for a few of the dishes is definitely old school. Not how I would make it, not my preference. A little too much corn starch leaves it thick--but never lumpy. A touch powdery from an overly generous hand with the turmeric. Despite all that, it can't be faulted--and it is what it is. This place isn't trying to set the world on fire. They don't aspire to be a hipster food cart or present a modern fusion approach. What they do want, and it oozes out of the couple, and out of every dish, is to provide you with really tasty, satisfying food in generous portions at a fair price. And then there's this. Portland sucks for Chinese. Not sure why that is, and I have had that discussion with many people. Within that universe of mediocre Chinese, or places trying just a bit too hard, this food cart rises to the top. Whatever they make, they make well--and even if it isn't quite how I'd like it, and even when a dish lacks some elegance--you will always feel good for having tried it. Some caveats. They don't take phone orders. This leaves you with two choices. Order from Postmates, and have your options restricted to a handful of dishes. Or go to the cart, order to your heart's content, and then wait as this older couple gets to work. As far as I can tell, he's the only one manning the wok. On a recent go around, I was told a 25 minute weight. So I skeedadled to the vinyl store around the corner, thumbed through the racks, picked up my food and heroically arrived back at home with food for days. Go. Check it out. My husband had some eggplant dish here that he really liked, so he was raving about it for ages. So we decided to come here on a weeknight when we were sans kids, yay! It was semi busy, but it wasn't so bad that we couldn't find a table. Nice couple runs the place. We ordered a rice dish and a noodle dish to go. We opened our dishes as soon as we got home and instantly noticed how yellow they were. Obviously, they added turmeric, but we didn't realize how much until we tried it. Oh my wow. It very fragrant. The first bite or two are good, but then it becomes an over-powerful experience. It was just too much for us. Maybe I'll try a different dish because it seems most people like it. I wouldn't disregard it completely, and we'll definitely be back to try it. Just be sure to like turmeric if you're going to get a dish with it in it. It's also in a cute little food cart park with some tables. We were there on a weekday night, so it was easy to find seating while we waited. But it might be tough on a weekend. read more

It's hard to find veggie friendly options in the food cart pods over at Piknik Park. Uncle Tsang's was open and I liked the look of the menu. Aunt Tsang was super friendly and brought out my sesame broccoli with tofu with white rice and four sesame balls within 15 minutes. The portion of my meal was HUUGE! My only feedback was that the sauce wasn't my cup of tea. I'm not a fan of tahini sauce, and this was super similar to that taste. The meal was smothered in the sauce, making it really hard for me to enjoy. I guess I wasn't fully aware that the meal I ordered had sauce on it, I didn't recall seeing it on the phots of menu items. I'm keeping this at a fairly high rating though because the tofu, broccoli, rice and sesame balls were cooked/made fairly fresh. The service was fast and friendly and I appreciated how affordable my meal was! Finally, based off of other reviews, I'm going to think that maybe I ordered the wrong thing. This was super tasty and also great prices. I especially loved the salt and pepper pumpkin and the Dan Dan noodles. The garlic cabbage and black bean string beans and tofu were also really good. Last time I was nearby I got the scallion pancakes which have turmeric and black pepper in the dough. Unlike any other scallion pancakes I've had but just as delicious. Just ate here with friends. We all enjoyed the 5-6 dishes ordered: green beans, curry noodles, salt & pepper tofu, Brussels sprouts, something with mushrooms, eggplant, egg drop soup?? There was a bit of a wait for some of the food, but she warned us about that up front. The portions are generous, so the fact that everything came in to go containers was handy. A reusable bowl or plate would have made eating it in situ easier, though. A pub table in front was OK for 6 of us even in the light rain. There were other options including a larger covered area with a heater. Would definitely eat here again. (The bibimbap place 10 feet away was convenient & fast too.) read more

When my barber told me he drives miles to Uncle Tsang's just to get a vegetarian Chinese meal I totally believed him. This place must be Mecca for vegetarians in Portland who crave Asian flavors. The entire menu is vegetarian with some gluten-free options as well. Uncle Tsang's cooks tofu better than most brick and mortar restaurants. If I could cook tofu like this at home I might become a vegetarian. The vegetables in each dish are perfectly cooked every time. With each bite you taste the sauce but the vegetable shines through too. The menu is so expansive you may not eat the same dish twice very often. Today I tried the green beans with black bean sauce and tofu. What would normally be a side dish can stand alone as an entree. The couple working in the cart are super nice and accommodating. If everyone in your party isn't strictly vegetarian, Piknik Park has delicious options for carnivores too. Uncle Tsang's will always stand out in my mind because the dishes are perfectly cooked every time. I wish more restaurants would treat vegetables with such respect and I'm not even vegetarian. read more

The pot stickers are huge and packed full of veggies. You can tell they make the dough by hand. It's soft and chewy. The teriyaki tofu was full of flavor 1 you could taste fresh ginger and wasabi. They gave us enough sauce without having to ask for more! And the tofu's texture was perfect - soft on the inside and a little tough and chewy on the outside. The portion size was really good! This is my favorite food in all of Portland. Far and away the best Chinese I've had anywhere (in the US; I've never been to China,) let alone Portland. I've ordered their Sesame Tofu five times since I discovered them about a month ago. If you love tofu, this will make your eyes roll into the back of your head. If you've never HAD tofu, this will make it your favorite protein. I mean, it is SO perfect. Silky, soft, and tender inside, crisp with a very light batter on the outside, glazed in glistening sweet/sour/spicy sauce, and sprinkled with crunchy sesame seeds. If you've never had something like that, I t's probably most comparable to sweet and sour pork/shrimp/whatever, but much more delicate and savory. It comes with rice on the side. There's also a side of Chinese greens in the photo. The peanut sesame noodles are incredible too- thick, chewy, fresh noodles, perfect peanut sauce, some veg- every thing I dream of. Those two dishes are enough food for 4-5 meals for me. The portions are huge. This place is great. And they're completely vegetarian read more
