In February 2015 we contracted New Hope Tile (Mike Czerwinski) to completely remodel our secondary bathroom. The job was to replace the builders tub/shower with a walk-in shower, replace the flooring, toilet, vanity, lighting, and mirrors. There was no re-architecture or reconstruction. All new pieces were being installed exactly where the previous pieces existed, therefore, no new plumbing or construction required. We also constructed the company to re-tile our master bath shower and was to complete the projects back to back. During the course of the secondary bathroom installation the following problems were encountered:
1. During demolition, the contractor did not turn the water fully off resulting in damage to the lower level living room ceiling.
2. Drywall work was not completed properly. We repeatedly raised the imperfections to the contractor and had to complete the work ourselves before painting.
3. Drain screen had to be reinstalled several times because it was not installed properly. Contractor ended up gluing the new screen on top of the old screen rather than properly repair.
4. Drain plug in one of the vanity sinks was no installed properly which resulted in a leak when the drain plug was depressed.
5. Contractor did not return to install the mirrors which were originally on backorder.
6. New flooring was higher and door needed to be shaved down so that it didn't rub against the floor. The door has been cut uneven.
During the re-tile work on the Master Bath (which was done at the same time instead of back to back), the following problems were encountered:
1. During demolition, exterior wall was damaged in the upper level of the two-story family room. Contractor began repair work but never finished it
2. Tile work on back wall and shower seat uneven and now set in grout that way
3. Fixtures were damaged when removing them, they were not repaired upon reinstalling them
4. The holes around the three water valves were cut too big in the new tiles resulting in gaps once the fixtures were reinstalled. We have duct tape over the holes because scutchins have never been ordered in that size (it does not appear they exist, new tiles will need to be installed).
5. Sloppy caulking, didn't remove old caulk, just put new caulk over the old. Left with mildew and mold problem underneath new caulk as a result.
6. Cracked a tile during install, instead of replacing, it was simply covered up with grout
7. Glass reinstalled unevenly and not secured correctly resulting in falling tiles
The contractor had taken the final draw on the project to secure materials but in the 7 months that have passed he has not returned to complete the work. He has responded several times to messages stating that he was injured and out of work for a period of time. When we discovered that he had returned to work and we confronted him, he sent text messages to us acknowledging he should have come to complete our job, that he was sorry, but that he needed to do new work for new income over completing what was wrong with our job. He has yet to return, he has kept the money, and when we have confronted him by saying we will hire a new contractor and send him the bill, he doesn't write back.
We have all text messages acknowledging his actions and we have photos and an email trail of all correspondence and issues. We have his acknowledgement and apologies on the damage he caused to the house during the course of both demolitions. read more
