It is similar to Sichuan/Szechuan cuisine in ways, in that there is an emphasis on spicy foods, although the spice profiles differ. It is in the space formerly occupied by a different Chinese restaurant called Joyce (RIP - I loved and miss their short-lived foray into seafood boils). Although there are many great authentic (meaning regionally specialized) Chinese restaurants in Bergen County and northern NJ, including several Sichuan places, this is the only Hunan one I'm aware of (without venturing further south into NJ), and is certainly one of the nicest Chinese restaurants atmosphere-wise, with an elegant dining room. If you want to try the interesting and authentic dishes, of which there are plenty, order from the sections of the menu labeled with "Hunan" or "Home Style." The soups and cold appetizers are very traditional too. The house speciality is the Hunan steamed fish head with pickled chili - the platter is quite impressive and takes 20-30 min to prepare. You can add tofu (recommended) or noodles for an additional $5. We ordered this but since I'm not a fish head fan (and like my fish very simply dressed) - I think it was a type of carp - the appreciation for it was lost on me. It's topped with a heap of red chilis but is actually not as spicy as it looks. Personally I prefer the fish fillet dishes such as the fish with ginger, which has very tender filet slices. I loved the soup dumplings (large and soupy), shrimp with salted egg yolk (or any salted egg yolk dishes, which aren't easy to find), and enjoyed the tender sautéed beef dishes like beef with spring onion or the spicy green pepper with steak, with crunchy peppers that give a piquant refreshing kick. They have whole Peking duck (Beijing roast duck)! The menu only shows pricing for the whole duck but we asked for half and they obliged. To be honest it's not the best Peking duck I've had but the balance of crispy skin (that's yet not too fatty) to generously shaved lean duck meat was unimpeachable. And they use high-quality crepes that are superbly thin but do not tear. The lo mein is also pretty good - it's slightly smoky and is better than common. Parking tip: there are only a few spots in front but there is a parking lot in the back of the building with plenty of spaces. There are lots of exciting and exotic menu offerings and still many we'd like to try, so we'll be back repeatedly.

What are usually pillowy soft wontons, were thick and gummy. The broth tasted like bath water. So the entirety of our meal tasted NOTHING like the Empire we know and love. This is so disappointing. The same thing happened with Chen's Yummy House. Every time that we find a great place, they change hands and it goes to crap. I just figured I'd warn everyone that this place is NOT the same. I thought maybe they just had a bad night, but I looked at recent Google reviews before posting this, and I see a similar complaint. This was so bad that I don't even think I'll give them another chance for redemption. Every single component of our meal sucked, and we were out $50.

We most recently came in on a Friday night with a 6 pm reservation. Yes, we had to flag down one of the harried but cheerful women working here to place our order. But look around - there's not a white tablecloth in sight. You may have to catch someone's eye, and there's nothing wrong with that. By 6:15 pm, half of our order was on the table, and we were gleefully chomping on fried dumplings and pillowy buns. The small but clean and modern space was packed - packed with people, but also with so much happiness. Almost everyone was smiling, laughing, and joking as they tucked into this feel-good array of comfort classics. Jajangmyun, jjampong, khan poong, gochu japchae... all of these traditional dishes sang. Even a simple plate of sauteed vegetables was delicious. And everything spent just seconds between being finished in the kitchen and sitting in front of us. Is it cheap? No, nor should it be. The ingredients are of the freshest, including the seafood. The cooking couldn't be better. And this is no grimy hole in the wall. If it were a French bistro, you'd have no problem with the prices. So pay these fine folks what they deserve, and enjoy.

We used to come a lot !!! But the food seems to have degraded its quality, with no consistency. Quite a disappointment since there really aren't any Korean food in Tenafly... We ordered Fried Shrimp in garlic sauce ($29.99) and we could taste too much of soy sauce in the dressing. Quite a small quantity for this price too. My usual go to place is Tae Myung Guan in Palisades Park, and Ah Woo Rang for a large groups also at Palisades Park.

I haven't been to many Szechuan Chinese restaurants but Hot Fish is easily the best Chinese food in NJ by a long shot. I'm vegetarian so can't comment on meat dishes but the salt & pepper tofu is out of this world (though if you get it via takeout be mindful of the white doily-style round paper on the bottom of the plastic container which I assume is there to soak up excess oil, but is not edible). I'm going to Hot Fish for takeout today and will be getting the salt & pepper tofu dish as well as their Kung Pao tofu which I'm excited to try. The garlic flavored broccoli is spectacular and may be my favorite dish. It somehow tastes even better reheated the next day (the sauce probably gets absorbed more). Ordering at least two of those -- the garlic sauce used in it is truly unique and remarkably delectable. If you're not a fan of mushrooms you need to request no "fungus" as that's how they refer to mushrooms. The veggie fried rice is as good as I've ever had and I love that it's served white rather than the typical soy sauce stained brown fried rice that's much more common. The egg & scallion fried rice is also wonderful and doesn't contain any fungus, unlike the veggie fried rice. Be sure to try the marinated cucumber appetizer. It has a warm, numbing spice to it and is absolutely fantastic. Edemame is good. Sauteed green beans are remarkably good -- almost as good as the garlic broccoli. Come to think of it, I haven't had a bad dish yet. Or even one that wasn't above average. This place is legitimately amazing. Authentic, consistent, and an exceptional dining experience. If I could better express just how much I love the food at Hot Fish I would, I simply lack the descriptive language needed to properly convey just how wonderful the flavor combinations and perfectly textured veggies and tofu taste and leave you feeling after the meal is finished. The chef(s) and kitchen staff are truly talented and consistent, the latter being extremely important as most people want to have the same dish when they find one they love and return to the restaurant again. Inconsistency can really hurt a restaurant and one's desire to eat there again. My only criticism is that Hot Fish isn't closer to my home, because I would genuinely like to eat their at least once a week if not more but since it's over 30 minutes away it makes eating their regularly more difficult. But it has always been well worth the trip. So glad this place opened -- it's the best Chinese food in the NYC/NJ area and has quickly become my favorite restaurant. I'm surprised the current Yelp rating is only 4.2/5.0, though that is very good score and you can't please everyone especially with spicy food which some Americans just aren't accustomed to.
