My son and I stopped for chicken. I love the clean ambiance and friendly service. This family is from Serbia and there are photos of former Yugoslavia adorning the walls. We sat right next to the one that showed the Dubrovnik coast. I just got back from that area, so it was the perfect table for us! I thought the food was pretty good. I was wondering if it would be similar to Barberton chicken, since that is also from Serbian origins. It tasted a little different, but it was still good. The coleslaw was a little sweet for my taste, but not bad. Jojos were perfectly seasoned and had a nice crispy texture. We were there kind of between lunch and dinner, so it wasn't busy at all. I wouldn't mind going back to also try some of the strudel, but we were too full to try it this time around. read more

If you're expecting fancy service and elegant dishes, this place is not for you. It is a no nonsense, just like your grandma made it, comfort style place. Would recommend the fried cod dinner, and the cabbage roll dinner. The dumplings had a surprising kick of paprika and the cabbage rolls had a great flavor. although everyone I have talked to restaurant, my experience was not that of love. We were greeted friendly and given our table. We were asked for our drink order by an older waitress and I told her we also wanted the appetizer platter as we were expecting for more guests. She nodded and walked away. We were brought our drinks by a younger waitress and asked for our orders. I ordered the round steak, which I asked if it was grilled or baked and they said it was baked. I asked if it was real mashed said it was I asked for gravy on my mashed potatoes as well as my meat when the younger waitress brought our salads, I asked about our appetizer which she said she knew nothing about. I told her and she said oh no it's OK which I'm assuming means she was still going to get it. The menu stated that the side salad would have cucumber, tomato and red onion. The only thing on our salad was lettuce, red pepper and tomatoes,When our meals showed up, I assumed we weren't getting our appetizer, but wasn't sure. Then my meal was sat in front of me and the gravy I asked for was not gravy, but a very liquid tomato and onion juice, not even a sauce. I always pepper my food heavily, so I always take the cap off the pepper shaker to able to get a lot out quickly. Then I used the salt shaker and when nothing would come out I also that lid off and into my astonishment, what I saw made me sick. The moisture from the restaurant corroded the lid to the salt shaker, and the rust (or debris )down halfway into the shaker. Both waitresses sat down to fold silverware into napkins in a booth and I knew they weren't coming back over for a while so I took the salt check over to them them and told them that I needed a new salt shaker. She said oh that's just from the air conditioning and the moisture that's why we put in the salt. Well, yeah I know you put in the salt for that reason, but do you ever look at your shakers to see that they're corroded and seeping into the salt? when she brought the second salt shaker over to us, I looked at and it was also corroded, but not as bad so when she came back to the table, I asked for a third salt shaker You no apology whatsoever for this not so pleasant experience so if you ever go to this restaurant, check your salt and pepper shakers people. And yes, we did leave a tip only 10%. We usually give 20 because this was the waitresses responsibility. read more

I'm half Romanian and I know great paprikash when I taste it. Theirs is the best! My grandmother's strudel was a bit better than theirs but she had lots of pratice. In years past we appreciated this restaurant and its signature dish of Chicken Paprikash, but apparently in the intervening time the prices have gone up too much to continue our patronage. Especially considering the portions of its more expensive dishes. The Broiled Scrod was delicious but small-portioned and the home fries had nearly half of them burnt. A confusing "Pop Tax" in addition to the sales tax also had us scratching out heads. While I can't fault the hostess and server (they were lovely) I'm afraid we'll have to dip out for now. read more

We stumbled upon this restaurant when Yelping for a place to eat near Akron. I saw the reviews mentioned Chicken Paprikash, and I was sold. This is a family favorite dish that my Grandmother made after being taught the preparation by one of her Hungarian friends many years ago, and for that reason no restaurant ever seems to come close to my childhood memories...until I ate here. The menu offered a choice of white or dark meat chicken, so I chose the dark. It was served with nokedli (dumplings) that were just a bit larger and softer than my Grandmother's, and the paprika sauce had a slight heat at the end which was very different (but good!). New Era's dish does not have sour cream blended into the sauce, but it is available for order as a condiment. You cannot go wrong with this choice! My fiancée ordered the Pleskavica which is a giant patty of mixed ground meats (pork, beef, lamb?), and he relayed that it was delicious (and something he had never tried). Our sever suggested a Serbian wine, which complimented the flavors well (so well that we took a picture of the label to buy it at home). We followed up by splitting a cheese strudel for dessert, and it was phenomenal. The atmosphere is casual, and there's a choice of bar seating as well as a separate dining room. There's something to be said for food that's delicious and that can evoke a memory -- well done New Era! read more

Since the parents turned over the business to their children it seems like its a chore to serve you at times-the quality and service has gone down! I've been picking up food on my way home but after 3 mistakes stuffed peppers were very small-they replaced the dinner's but on our next order they forgot a side dish, home fries were dry and looked like they were on a grill all day and then the last straw they gave us someone else dinner's and when I called to get our order corrected they stated they were out of what we originally ordered. It's a shame they don't take pride in the restaurant/customer service the way their parents have for years. read more

Such an amazing place!!! The food was cooked perfectly and such a unique menu. The table got fried chicken, stuffed chicken breast with gravy and stuffing and grilled pork chops. I can probably count on both hands how many times I have been here, but this place is a favorite amongst my entire family. I think that everyone must have discovered this place while I was away at college, and I haven't really lived at home in 8 years, so I miss out on 99% of the chances to eat here. I did, however, get a chance to stop by last week when I was visiting the family to grab a bite to eat with my dad. He has his specific waitress he always gets. He knows everyone on staff. The waitress knows without asking that he will order the dish that makes them famous - the Chicken Paprikash with a slice of complimentary streudel for dessert. It's got the small-town type of feel to it and seems to have a base of loyal customers. I am generally the odd person out because I shy away from the Chicken Paprikash and opt for a sandwich when I go. The place has come a long way from the first time I went and it was in a small building that was not quite the 'looker' from the outside. The New Era is now a sizeable tan building on the same grounds as the previous place. The restaurant that used to have a small amount of tables now has two wings, a bar, and a party room just in case you wanna get a big group together to celebrate. If you're looking for a good meal, or just happen to be driving down East Market St, stop in this place and grab a bite, hang out for a bit, and enjoy some of Akron's finest. I was taken here for the first time over the weekend. I love the typical Serbian faire like chevapi but I was displeased with the food. I ordered the chicken paprikash and was a little revolted. My dinner turned into an full fledged dissection when I realized the bone and skin was left on the chicken. I ordered all white mean in hopes of getting lean meat. I very well could of chipped a tooth if I would of dived right in. It took me 10 minutes to debone, remove the skin, and place a heaping pile of waste on a bread plate. Shouldn't the cook have done this? The sauce was too thin and did not coat the spatzle or dumplings. I ordered green beans as a side. This was a big mistake. They were from a can, unseasoned, as festering in their tin flavored liquid. My meal came with a strudel for dessert. YAY! maybe something good to finish it off. I was wrong it was flavorless and filled with crumbly, rank, dry cheese instead of the sweet creamy cheesecake like filling I was hoping for. If they wanted it to be more similar to gibanice go ahead but it would of failed as that as well. I promised my boyfriend to never take me here again. read more

We both got turkey dinners, her sides were peas, (canned....she had forgotten)...surprise, mashed potatoes and gravy; mine were slaw and Spanish rice. Today's secret word is "bland." Both white and dark meat, unseasoned, gravy that made canned Campbell's gravy taste like an express train to Flavortown, stuffing that made Stovetop taste like Paul Prudhomme came back from the dead and made it himself, and rice that tasted like just rice...no country had put a stamp of any kind on the stuff! I have eaten here several times, usually with one of the organizations I belong to. I am very particular about where and what I eat, but since I don't chose the places we meet at, I attend, eat and listen to what others have to say. Sorry to say, it's all over the place. I have heard some people rave about the chicken livers and at other times they are said to be awful. Same with the paprikash. Some of the items seem to be on the menu just to fill it out (burgers) with choices. I have had the spaghetti with meatballs a number of times and think it can be fantastic. A nice spicy sauce with wonderfully tender meatballs. The last time I ate there (last week) the meatballs were rubbery and not good at all, like maybe a lower grade of beef was used. I have also been there when they were already out of the posted "specials" at 6:00 in the evening! Prices are very reasonable, but meal quality is inconstant. The baked goods are always very good. Sometimes the bar gets a little rowdy and loud. Avoid sitting near it if you can. read more

The chicken livers are fried with onions. I was only going to eat a few but ended up polishing off the entire plate - the were scrumptious! I liked these much better than the paprikash they're famous for, which I've had on previous occasions. Great deserts - I had an apple turnover and turkish coffee. Order early because the coffee takes about 20 minutes to drip into the cup. The turnovers are super light and fluffy, and the coffee was very good as well. read more
