TLDR: it works! Try it!…read more CrossFit saved my life. I was in the midst of a divorce and had lost 50 pounds due to stress. I worked from a desk, and was a couch potato at night that couldn't bench press my own body weight. I was on sleeping pills, anti-depressants and was not eating. Mike encouraged me to stop by and try a class. So I did! It was a small class. I think there were 3 of us, and I had brought a friend! Brian was the instructor. He had a quiet, calm voice. He asked to look at my gait, and what sports I'd played, while he probably sized up how hard he could push me. :) I remember being a little sore after class that day but I came back. And it was after one of those first week's classes that I remember driving home happy! I was staying with friends and I burst into the kitchen smiling from ear to ear as they were getting ready for the day. Endorphins! And I was hooked. I had been a member of many gyms. Mostly for less than a year. The habit never stuck. Gyms don't give personalized instruction every day, nor do the members cheer you on and congratulate you after a workout. Gyms don't have a long term plan or program. Mike does! This sh*t works. I gained the 50 lbs back. I lifted 400 lbs. I did a muscle up! My advice to you is to try it. Pay for a month. If you like it, you will wonder why you didn't go sooner. If you don't like it, you might like the people and coaches and make some friends.

When it comes to choosing, the opinion of someone you know tends to be the best way to go. I cannot say enough good things about the experience we have had with Crossfit Prototype/ Prototype Kids. The entire Team here is amazing. They are knowledgeable and careful. They know how to motivate and how to engage children of any age, and the best part, they tire out the child in a single session. The options are simple, pay for unlimited classes or go the punch card route. At the end of the day, it costs no more than most kids activities. If you haven't done it yet, check out their Facebook Page and website. Better yet, bring your child there for a class, they give the first one for free. So no harm, no foul if they find it isn't for them.

Every time I travel some place, I always try to make it to a local Crossfit gym. Over the…read moreholidays, I was back in Massachusetts visiting the family and decided to make a trip over to Crossfit Centermass. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Crossfit - it's a mix of power lifting, olympic lifting, gymnastics, and sports conditioning. You workout in small classes (2-10 people) and the workouts are constantly varied. Typically, the other gyms will charge me a drop in fee, but the guys at Crossfit Centermass let me drop in for free because I belong to a Crossfit in Austin, TX. Much appreciated! I went during the open gym time at noon, so I'm assuming my experience is a little different then other times. During the open gym time they will do a WOD (workout of the day), but you do not need to participate if you do not want to. I opted to join in on the WOD - considering I hadn't worked out in a few weeks, it was brutal, but they always are. The gym seemed to be very well equipped. I really liked their setup for pullups. If I was going to make one constructive critique, it would be that their jump ropes sucked. But otherwise this seemed to be a fantastic box (gym) with a lot of friendly people working out. I'm not sure what the situation is with parking, but I found parking directly in front of the gym on Shrewsbury Street. Definitely give 'em a shot if you are looking for a Crossfit gym (or even if you're not)!
