Simmler BJJ is owned and run by the inimitable Dan Simmler, a black belt in every sense of the word. Having attended several seminars with Master Simmler, I can tell you that his teaching style is universally appealing, from the more basic level all the way up to the most advanced. He has worked with my son both in a group seminar setting and one-on-one and has a great rapport with kids (elementary through high school age), which not every black belt instructor does. If we lived up north, we would definitely train with Simmler BJJ - can't say enough good things about them! NOTE: While we certainly like and appreciate Dan Simmler, we aren't close friends who hang out every week and we are not related; therefore, we gain nothing from relating our positive experiences with Simmler BJJ. The bottom line is that we hand-selected our training center in Maryland specifically for the instructional skill of a black belt teacher and international competitor, which is the same thing that would motivate me to be a part of Simmler BJJ if we lived in Massachusetts. Period. In fact, I actually joined Yelp right after one of Dan Simmler's seminars down here, so as I went to post this review, I just realized that my "Yelp" profile picture is one of Dan and my son from way back then. I was recently in Worcester visiting family for the weekend and hoping to find a bjj gym to train at. I also have an 8yr old daughter who trains and a young nephew who is interested in checking it out. I came in for an adult class on a Saturday morning and brought the kids along. The instructors are legit, very thorough and clear in breaking down techniques, and everyone seemed humble and welcoming. Overall there's a great team atmosphere and classes seem well structured. Class size was large with a variety of experience levels and body types to roll with but also plenty of space to move around since the gym itself is sizable. It's also worth noting how clean and airy the gym is. On top of all this, Dan came out and personally instructed the kids even though there was no kids class scheduled! Needless to say this was much appreciated. I'd highly recommend this school and will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area read more

Simmler BJJ is the real deal! I previously trained BJJ for two years in Illinois and lived in Worcester, MA for five months of training at work. When looking in the area for a good gym, I did not look any further than here due to the welcoming atmosphere and high-level talent on the mats. Coach Dan is an outstanding person that truly cares about the advancement of his students on and off the mats. There are a variety of students here with different skill sets from beginner white belts to advanced brown and black belts that are all willing to help you learn. Also, a great part of this school is the amount of live rolling you are able to do after each class. If I lived in Central Massachusetts all year round, this would be my school of choice! read more

Everything about SBJJ/WMMA is incredible. The coaches knowledge the the team are unmatched. I came to the gym with very limited experience, and the whole team and coaches were very supportive while I fumbled through my first class. Each class I went to everyone was very helpful and would take time during drills to make sure I was doing everything right. The higher belts were great about letting the lower belts set the tone, and would make sure all the rolls were competitive and everyone was getting better. I have been involved in martial arts in new england for over 15 years now and have met many excellent instructors of various styles throughout the country. I can say that Dan Simmler is very very skilled JiuJiusu practitioner and anyone who knows him will say the same. If you are looking for Brazilian JiuJitsu in the Worcester area, this is who you should be training with. Simmler bjj was tricky to find because they relocated to Brussel st., but when I was finally able to find them and start training I realized how perfect the atmosphere was for me. Plenty of mat space so you can start on your feet and practice standup if you want. Awesome instructors and training partners. And I can't say enough about professor Dan Simmler. I highly recommend people get involved with bjj as a form of exercise, however there are several better options than Simmler BJJ in the central MA area. I'm not here to promote any other school, but rather to give a real review of this school. The positive reviews shown are from friends of the owner so they don't carry much weight. Many people choose to participate in brazilian jiu jitsu for the exercise benefits, but all health benefits are thrown out the window when you're inhaling motorcycle gas fumes the entire time you're there as the school is located directly above Gabriel Racing. Not to mention the "locker room" which has been under construction for about 6 months with saw dust and who knows what else in the air. This is not a clean environment for exercising. To parents considering bjj for their kids: BJJ is great for kids, but don't subject your children to these conditions here. There are better BJJ schools nearby. Secondly, if you're going to pay $150+/month to learn bjj you might as well find a another school where the classes are taught by qualified instructors. The owner of this school puts his name on the door, but is rarely training his students leaving it up to blue belt students to teach the classes. It's not rare for him to be late or not show up at all leaving students locked outside of the building. This is a common complaint heard from ex-students as to why they left for other schools. Lastly, God forbid you experience an injury while training as the owner doesn't allow you to put your membership on hold while you heal so that he can continue collecting his $150/month. My recommendation would be to Google other schools in the area online to find a more reputable school and get what you pay for. The owner may know bjj, but he doesn't know how to run a business. read more

I've trained at this academy many times over the last 10 years and it's hands down the best place in Massachusetts to learn legit Gracie Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. I've visited a lot of Bjj schools and this is the only school that starts you from your feet to begin a sparring (rolling) match. Simmler Bjj offers great insight to wrestling and judo and how they correlate to Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Not covering these aspects of grappling leaves a gap in understanding the grappling arts. Where do I begin....well a few years ago I was looking for a school to start training Mixed Martial Arts. I had been doing American style boxing under a USA Certified Boxing coach and loved it and the conditioning but I wanted something more. I was randomly talking to a friend of mine about my search when she told me that she was actually training Jiu-Jitsu at this great academy in Worcester. At first I was a little hesitant because I lived out in Framingham and that was kind of a hike for me especially when I worked out in Brookline. I came to the Simmler BJJ one after noon and saw that a class was just beginning to start. I might have been there four minutes when the Owner and Head instructor jump off the mats(not before bowing of course) and came up to me and said hi you must be Jon. The strange part is that I never called and told them I was coming(my friend mentioned earlier that week that I might come by)by that day. First thing he asked me was "so you want to hop on the mats and take class, we have an intro process but I can get you on the mats warmed up and have one of my assistants run you through it and then you can join in on the class". I told him it was best that I wait but would love to watch and see what I am clearly about to get myself into. So I watched the class and was instantly hooked, the way he instructed was different then anything I have seen before and I had checked out a few other schools in the area before his. I took an intro that week and started taking classes and never looked back. I fell in love with his style of teaching and BJJ in general. It was one of the best choice I had ever made for myself. I loved it so much that I decided to take a teacher training program that he offered there so that I could start to learn more about how to instruct as well as how to really break down different techniques and moves to further my skill and knowledge. It was truly a great experience. Now fast forward two years to now. I recently moved to Las Vegas Nevada where some of you might know is the UFC capital of the world. There is academy's and gyms all over and especially for MMA and BJJ. I have checked out the majority of them to try and find one that meets up to my expectations of a solid all around great Academy. I will be honest with you I have found a few good ones and one even that I have started to train at here and there when I have time in my new hectic life out here as a personal trainer. But what still remains to be the biggest issue with all the schools out here is that the level of intensity and instructor knowledge just does not even come close to what I have experienced at Simmler BJJ. I can only hope that one day I can finish my quest of receiving my black belt and open a school under the Simmler name, style, and caliber of teaching because there is nothing that compares to it out here. If you live in the Worcester area or even in Massachusetts for that matter I highly recommend that you go check out Simmler BJJ. The school is top notch and all of the staff and instructors have a huge passion for their craft and would love to have you. I promise you will not be disappointed and will definitely catch the same bug that I did that kept me going back day after day and keeps me itching till this day to hit the mats at Simmler BJJ. Positive reviews of the owner don't necessarily come from those that are friends of his, but from students, like myself, who have been impressed by the curriculum and the tight-knit group of students that train here. I'm a new student and have only been training for 2 months. I find that the exercise program associated with BJJ is intense, but with purpose. Rolling around on the mat for 6 minutes at a time requires substantial stamina and conditioning (and a LOT of core strength) and all can be accomplished training here. The assistant instructors(blue belts) have always been more than willing to help, and are more than competent at teaching as their instruction has been right in line with my skill/learning levels. Keep in mind it takes blue belts years to accomplish that rank, and they certainly aren't amateurs. With all the "MMA" schools that have popped up in recent time, it would certainly be worthwhile to google the resume and achievements of the head instructor, to verify that this is indeed a reputable place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I had a blast being there, and felt welcomed by all from the second i walked through the door. The gym is clean, and classes are well structured. Would gladly train here 365 if i lived in the area. Bad hard sale tactics. When you call, they won't tell you the class schedule. You have to go by for a private class, which is just an excuse for a very hard sale. You do a few moves on the mat by yourself with two instructors, and then the instructor takes out a sheet with ridiculous payment structures and fees. I said I had to think about it and they kept calling at all hours like if they were selling me an '81 Toyota with rustproofing. read more

I would avoid this place like the PLAGUE... I trained there for a short period and the training was fine. I then lost my job and cancelled my membership. A few months go by and I find out that I'm being sued by them. As a small business owner myself I would NEVER do something so unethical in order to make a dollar. I should have known better because the short time I was there they were always trying to UPGRADE me into more expensive programs with no regards to what my training goals actually were. read more

I am a purple belt who had the opportunity to train at Worcester MMA as a visiting student for a month in March 2015. Upon moving to the Worcester area, I was sidelined with a serious back injury that kept me off the mats for about 9 months. I was very graciously welcomed to the school by Professor Simmler and all of his students. They were especially careful in helping me get back into training in a way that was conducive to the injury from which I was recovering. Instruction was very high level with a lot of attention to small detail. I was routinely impressed by the skill level of the individual students across all belt levels as well as by the competition record of many of the students with whom I had the opportunity to roll. The facility was very clean and there was plenty of mat space. I would strongly recommend Worcester MMA to anyone in the area who is interested in elevating their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game to its full potential. read more
