This place has great food. I love buffets, but I never get my money's worth because I can't eat very much at a time. At this restaurant though, you can get their buffet to go. You pay by the pound and I think it is five or six something per pound. My husband and I never pay more than $17 for the two of us, and we really pack our containers. I can easily get two or three meals out of my container, and my husband gets at least two out of his. That's pretty cheap! I grabbed one of their take out menus the last time I was there because I had thought maybe sometime I would like to order some crab rangoons and stuffed mushrooms for pick up. I changed my mind when I saw the prices. The rangoons are $6 for 8 and the stuffed mushrooms are $10 for an order of ten. I can pack a lot of rangoons and mushrooms in my container and I think I will just stick to doing it myself. read more

Does not look like much is another review said, but I just ate here for the first time, and I was impressed. The place is very clean. It was the middle of the afternoon, which is usually the worst time to go to a Buffet, but the food was hot and fresh, and they were replenishing regularly. I also loved the every table had its own hand sanitizer. I usually bring my own due to touching all the tongs, but I had forgotten, so it was a very much a surprise and delight that each table had its own sanitizer. I hesitated on giving it five stars - because it's really just a junky little Chinese buffet. But then I thought "it is what it is - they aren't trying to be a Michelin rated fine dining establishment - for 10 bucks. It's a good deal and they're doing a very nice job. read more

What a pleasant surprise. I do love Chinese food but who has time for a buffet? Traveling back to Detroit from Holland and I kept seeing the signs so I said why not. I could use some soup for this cold. Egg drop was fresh and delicious and had a great texture to it unlike cheap stuff I've had elsewhere. Hot and sour was just hot and sour enough. Well, I wanted some Chinese Food, so I whipped out my Yelp App and found New China Buffet in Portland Mi. I read some of the reviews and folks, remember where you are at. You are in Michigan, not DTLA or K-Town or NYC. The outside could use a facelift, however, I went inside, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was very clean, and the decor was not that bad. Much better than my expectations. I looked over the buffet, and it had something for everyone. Three stations, salad bar, dessert bar along with four choices of real Ice Cream. Not bad for $9 all in. In fact, it is damn good for that price. The bang for the buck is fantastic. The different chickens, pork, and beef had great flavor and plenty of veggies to add to your dish. The salad bar was decent; however, the Ranch was NOT Ranch. I don't know what it was but I used the red dressing on the salad, and a little bit goes a long way, and it was fairly decent. I liked the fact that they used nice big slices of veggies in everything. It really makes a big difference. The service is what it is as 99% of everyone is getting the Buffet and I had no issues. I highly recommend people come in for the lunch buffet so your stomach has time to calm down and you are not groaning at night before you go to bed. A nice touch is the real ice cream that you serve your self. Scoop out as much as you can fit into your bowl. It was actually good Ice Cream, not the cheap stuff. For me and this experience, it could not be better at any level. More people need to come to visit this place as it is 100% solid with a great price point! read more

Cons: Small and limited selection, no sushi. No hibachi or much of a kiddie selection (if you got kids) and there's no pizza but there's mozzarella sticks, onion rings and egg rolls and such which kids like. No fancy pants stuff like sushi, steak or crab. Pros: this place is actually really good. I was super surprised. The food while limited in scope is generally pretty well made and well flavored. Since there aren't all the fancies, the price is hard to beat - I paid $8.88 for dinner. (Compare that to the $23 I paid at another place because there was crab served - which I usually only have a few pieces, if it's even available, some joints will just have a small tray and then infrequently refill it) The Mongolian beef is ... Honestly the best I've had in this state since I moved from California. The green beans are damn good. I can't put my finger on what makes this places version of the ever present butter potatoes so good but ... They are. Maybe i was just nostalgic but (I'm Korean), I actually asked the hostess where they got it from because it tasted nearly as good as the kind my mom made - I've actually never had kimchi this good outside of my mama's. Another real rarity, I generally assume I'll get rude and snippy service with buffets (and in particular Chinese buffets) but while I'm pretty sure the hostess is the only one who speaks English here, she is exceptionally nice and polite. The rest of the food is probably just Chinese buffet standard taste/flavor, it's still decent though. The new curb side pickup is very friendly and easy. The process was smooth and it is very rewarding to support our local business while taking a break from cooking. The food was amazing and portions were more than we expected. Had enough left over for lunch the next day. I ate here on a Saturday around noontime. Weekend prices are the same as dinner prices, about $9.25 per person, I believe. Very limited selection, some of the food off the hot bar was cold, but mostly all of it was tasty. The place is kept clean which is a big plus. The employees are friendly. I would rather have good Chinese food than mediocre Chinese buffet. This was very good Chinese food served buffet style, and anything but mediocre. This is not the largest buffet, but definitely one of the best I have tried. Everything was fresh and delicious. Many Chinese buffets have bland food that tends to be dried out and lifeless. The beef dish they were serving was tender, not over cooked and very tasty. The shrimp dish they served had larger than average shrimp for a buffet with fresh and well prepared vegetables. The sauces in most of the dishes I sampled were wonderful and more complex than most Chinese buffets. It seems that the goal of the average Chinese buffet is to put out enough cheap food to fill their customers with as little expense as possible. I felt that the food I tasted here rivaled a more formal more expensive Chinese restaurant. Judging by all of the 5 star reviews, I'm sure my second meal here will be as good as the first. Authentic and the food are always fresh and hot: This is one of Portland, MI hidden treasures. Great place for the family, it seems every small town in the country has at least one or two Chinese restaurants these days, but this is one that stands out. They were not busy. I sat and waited, inquired about my order twice. After 20 minutes I left. Waitress followed me to my car pointing to the building. As far Chinese Buffets go this place is very good. Fresh dishes replaced often. Egg rolls and fried spring rolls are tender and flavorful. They utilize imitation crab and scallops pretty well (it is what is after all). The creamy shrimp is the perfect balance of rich savory sweetness without overwhelming the shrimp. The lo mein and vermicelli noodles are not dried out or soggy. The beef and mushroom is loaded with mushrooms and tender thin sliced beef in a well seasoned brown sauce. The sesame chicken was rated excellent by another diner; not to sweet with a good chewiness. The pepper chicken was also very good. The shrimp and vegetables was very good; studded with plenty deveined tender and tasty shrimp with the typical vegetables in a very nice white sauce. The chicken and broccoli had plenty of tender chicken and the broccoli was cooked tender crisp. Excellent meaty, tender chicken wings. The rangoons are light and crispy with a generous portion of filling. Mozzarella sticks were much appreciated by the table. Salad bar is fresh with many good choices. Condiments are varied and plentiful but the siracha seems to be watered down. Fresh fruit, pudding, ice cream are nice additions to the typical buffet desserts most often found at Chinese buffets. Since this business moved into there new location a few months ago I have to say the food has improved dramatically. The various dishes now have a distinct flavor and that is much appreciated. Many restaurants suffer from "funky" tasting water (ice machines?) this place's water is very good; no funk. Much better than your typical, run of the mill Chinese buffet. The food seems very fresh and is replaced quickly. Best crab rangoons I have ever tasted! The hot and sour soup is also excellent. Many options for vegetarians, as my wife is. We enjoy not having to drive into Lansing just to get some decent Chinese.
