So I'm generally a super chill human and I never write reviews, but after thinking about this experience a lot, I had to this time. I have moved 4 times in the last 15 months, safe to say I have quite a bit of recent experience in this process.
Pros:
1 - They moved quickly, which was a nice change of pace from most hourly moving companies. Their initial quotes & prices were very reasonable and they had many good reviews on another site that led me to go ahead and hire them. Overall the guys were cool and easy to communicate with, their personalities did make the experience more enjoyable (at least until all the issues sprang up towards the end).
Cons:
1 - They showed up 2.5 hours late, which normally wouldn't be an issue, but I was moving into a high rise and had the freight elevator reserved for a certain block of time. Although they were communicative during this process, that did not help the fact that we were then on a huge time crunch. Additionally, they originally said they had two flat tires, but one of the guys told me later that one of the other crew members slept in and that's why they were so late.
2 - Due to them being late, we were on an extremely tight window for the freight elevator since someone else was moving in on the same day as me. That meant I was literally outside moving my stuff WITH these guys, taking loads up the elevators, etc. Luckily the person moving in after me was able to delay their movers so we could have additional time - if they had not been able to, they would have had to keep my stuff in the truck and come back the next day, leaving me with no stuff and nowhere to go. I didn't mind helping out where I could since they were hustling, but it kind of defeats the purpose of paying people to move your stuff.
3 - My biggest grievance with the entire process - they did not wrap ANYTHING with the exception of my 2 TV's. So many of my things were messed up or ruined. Despite the fact that I asked in advance, through Yelp messenger, if they wrapped everything - I even listed out some of the items I was concerned with. They assured me they had wrapping and padding. On top of that, they carried my TV's out to the moving truck BEFORE wrapping them, so they were just tossed up there and haphazardly wrapped in the truck. I didn't see a roll of shrink wrap in sight. I had stripped my bed that morning and intentionally left ONLY my mattress protector on the mattress; for some reason, one of the guys removed the mattress cover, and they slid it across the disgusting truck bed, so my $2,000 mattress was stained on one side with dirt. They did not wrap my desk, and then turned it upside down to wheel it in, and scratched the entire top of it (it is white). Additional damaged or broken items due to non-wrapping: marble end table cracked, scratches and scuffs to the media stands, decorative blanket holder was so bent it had to be thrown away, the legs on my $160 stand-up fan were cracked, bent bookshelf, scratched bed frame, and more. To say there was a general lack of interest in caring for my things, is a massive understatement. When I questioned one of the guys about the damages, he started rattling off about steam cleaning my mattress and sending someone over to fix the desk, but there was "nothing he could do" about the marble end table that was cracked. He left without giving me information or following up on the damages.
4 - They brought exactly zero power tools, only manual hex keys. They asked a couple times to borrow my power tools but the majority of them were packed, so they had to disassemble and reassemble my bed with manual tools and it took forever. Once they left, I had to go back and remove my mattress and tighten all of the hex screws they left loose on the 4 corners.
5 - Lastly, and really annoyingly, when I went to check out, there was a 15% "tax" on the total. No municipality in the entire US has a 15% tax, and when I repeatedly questioned them about why I wasn't told up front there would be an additional 15% tacked on to the total I was quoted, he just kept telling me they "couldn't go around the app". I went back and forth asking about it but could never get a clear answer as to what it was for and why it wasn't mentioned.
Summary: I expressed my concerns to them before the move and asked specifically about one of my tv's that was really expensive, and about wrapping my items. They told me it was all good and taken care of. All of the damaged stuff in my apartment now says otherwise. Hopefully they can use this as constructive criticism and pack some shrink wrap, extra pads, and power tools for the next person. read more
