I took my two younger kiddos (6 and 4) here last Sunday for my daughters first time ever. Pros: - Clean facility - Nice skate floor - Skate assisters for younger children (however, these come at an extra cost of $5) - Friendly staff working the rentals/concessions - Skating games Cons: - General Admission for non-skaters/the parents that are required to be there to watch over their kiddos are also charged $9 just to enter the facility (I was a little caught off guard by this). I understand "policies" but maybe there could be further consideration for the parents that are required to be there. Skate Castle doesn't charge adult spectators. - Skate floor can get a bit overcrowded - Adults of children/adults skating with their younger children skating around extremely fast at times and others getting run into/knocked down - Concessions are a bit on the higher side ($3.50 for a small slushie) My kids ended up having a blast which offset the higher prices of all the things, but I'm not so sure that we'll be going back here too often. read more

Place is being taken over by mold. It's everywhere. Nearly every ceiling tile. No upkeep. Paid 20/pp to skate around under mold. My hair and clothes smelt terrible after leaving. Needs reported to the health department. Change out your ceiling tiles and fix the leaks. read more

Firstly I have never in my whole life wrote a review on any place good or bad ever until now. And not only have I written this review but I've posted a video for at least 4000 of my combined followers to see. was there for the last Saturday skate and I was accosted by some women who believed that they got to a spot on the benches before me. Although I arrived 20 to 30 minutes before them and placed everything under the cubby they piled their stuff where I was sitting after I got up with my children when I came back I said I might have to move that stuff to sit down when we leave and the lady freaked out and the rest of the night a manly looking lady who was 6 ft tall and her weird friend would make fun of my hair make fun of my body and would prevent me from getting my stuff and actually stood their body between the roller skating aid I was using and would try to prevent me from getting it and then act like I was an a****** for trying to get it. Also the fact that you're skating AIDS get stolen if you don't use it and then when you go to get one somebody else at you for taking their kids stuff even though you paid for it is a recipe for disaster. Even though there was room underneath the bench right next to where I put my stuff once these ladies targeted me it was on all night until the end when they got angry at me for moving their stuff and then the one punched me in the nose I of course retaliated and I punched the other lady through skate at the other one and now they don't want to press charges even though I do and the cops treated it like it was nothing. I heard the cops talking to the other people as if they believed them and not me and I believe that the roller drone owner or manager whoever the lady is with the '80s hair in glasses said I wasn't banned but I was antagonistic for trying to go back in and get my children and protect them although they allowed those people to protect their children mine were not protected. I also have autism and PTSD and so I plan on suing for an ADA claim not only them but the two women that assaulted me and made my life a living hell there all night. Every time I go there because of the disorganization and the lack of roles at least roles that make any sense people are always swearing at me yelling at me for getting my own stuff back or trying to get my stuff out of a cubby hole but this time when these ladies were threatening me and then one punched me in the nose I couldn't take it read more

Great owners who helped me get new wheels and the rink is so well maintained. I want more adult skate though

I was invited to a child's birthday here. Let's just say, I'll be declining the invite next time. For starters, when we pulled up there was a huge line to get in. We hop in line, scootching along slowly. Another partygoer came out to go to their car and said "oh there's a separate line for parties!" No signage, no guidance from staff. You're just supposed to inherently know to push past everyone. Parents pay $9 to get in, doesn't matter if you plan to skate or not. The woman who informed us of this was one of the rudest people I've ever encountered. But fine, we pay the $18 and head on in. Skate rental ladies were super sweet, no complaints there. The place is tight! Like we can't breathe, hot, it smells like feet (not their fault just giving the ambiance). My niece hits the rink and starts her slow circle around as she's not a strong skater. We stand tightly pressed against others. The party room is occupied until 1.5 hours into the party so we have no option to sit there. We decide to head to the cafe. The girl who took our order was very sweet. We ordered drinks and 2 walking tacos (just trust me....don't order those). The one doling out the food, not pleasant. We finally find a (dirty) table and have a seat. Finally the party room is ready. I'm being overly generous calling this a room. It looks like it used to be a utility closet (or maybe a prison cell?). We can't all fit, only the kids can sit and eat their pizza. The man that brought the pizzas was pleasant which was a nice reprieve from the rest of the mostly awful staff. I understand they were incredibly busy. I understand businesses need to make money. But having that many people squished into a tiny area (cafe and party room) felt uncomfortable and unsafe. I'm sure allowing that many people in at once also helped encourage the horrible attitude of the staff. I've never left a party so fast in my life. Shoutout to the older gentleman at the door, pretty sure he's the only person I saw smile all day! I'm sad to see this gem of my childhood turn into such a mess. read more

We had the best time here. Fantastic way to spend an afternoon with tweens. Good old wholesome fun. This place looks exactly how I would have imagined it to look in the late 70's / early 80's. So charming, well run and clean. 9 dollar per person entrance fee regardless if you skate . Snack bar has a variety of offerings ( think pizza, hotdogs, soft pretzel, slushies, candy etc ) at very reasonable prices. Skate rentals are great- chose between rollerblades and rollar skates. Skates are modern and the rental for only 3$ extra over the price of admission is a deal. In addition to the throw back aesthetics, what distinguishes this place from everywhere else right now is the level of warm service we encountered. The staff was awesome- so kind, attentive and professional. The owner approached my daughter and unsolicited gave her great skating pointers to make her first experience on rollerblades a huge success. Wish we had this kind of place in my hometown. It's totally awesome that NRD still exists today! Walking in.. it even smells the same as I remember from going back in the 80's. Friday night is mostly tweens but was still fun for us forty-somethings. I like that the program of the event offers "speed skating" for two separate groups. Love that.. let it out! I remember wishing back in the day there was a session such as "fast skate". We had couple skate, trio, ladies only & choice etc. Those are great memories. I met my very first boyfriend at the rink and practically grew up going roller-skating. Before we went I read some of my fellow yelper's review about NRD. I was surprised to read that the staff "wasn't" friendly? It was the opposite for us! Every staff member we came in contact with during the course of the evening was very nice and helpful! We have been talking about going and finally were able to! ** Parking tip: I recommend parking on an end because there could be a chance you could be blocked in because not everyone parks correctly. I genuinely loved roller skating and I am glad to finally discover a place to roller skate in Pittsburgh! The rink definitely captivates that retro 80s roller skating feel to it. The floors seemed to be really nice and from the looks of it they were recently redone. My first time attending there was a celebration for Mr. Bob. So I'm not sure what the actual prices are. I'm sure the prices were just a bit inflated as they had various things to offer for the party such as cake, waters , nachos etc. The staff was very helpful and polite. read more

I planned a staff outing with some of my colleagues to here, and let me tell you: we had a blast! When we first arrived, we suddenly realized that this was no ordinary skating rink because people were waiting in their cars for the doors to open! As we walked in, we captured several people walking in with their own bags and cases. I told my friends I felt like we were entering the movie: Roll, Bounce! Sure enough, it was better. These people were amazing, the vibe was awesome and the DJ was hot-great tunes all night long! Price of admission is $7.00 and skate rental is $3.00 (quad skates and blades available). This place was a melting pot of people and it was really cool to see everyone sharing a love for skating. There's definitely an "insider" vibe and my friends and I definitely stuck out as the new kids on the block. Some of our interactions with people were open and inviting, others not so much. In fact, some people were just downright rude. So I say: pay attention and look for the unwritten rules and if you have questions, don't be afraid to ask staff (was in a yellow shirt that read 'staff') which I saw was skating with everyone else. We are planning to return with more people and as previously mentioned, our positive experiences will lead us to come back! I would have loved to give this place a better review but I just got out of the ER after breaking my arm during adult night. The staff were friendly and I actually had a lot of fun but there are some dangerous design issues with the place which led to my injury. Most notably the circles in the rink are not centered. On one side there is probably 25 feet between the wall and the first line but the other side is much smaller due to the area for getting your skates on and off, it's maybe 10 feet wide which causes everyone to bunch up and crowd around as they funnel into it. Also they don't really enforce good behavior from the patrons. People will stop and dance and others will skate as fast as possible around causing you to have to navigate between them and that's how I got injured. One of the group of fast skaters ran into me from behind and I just fell wrong. It is unfortunate but they need to figure out what type of skating they want happening because having a free for all is bound to lead to more injuries. read more

This is a great place to come if you are in need of a cheap fun activity to do for the family, with friends, or just needing some time away from the house. Only $10 for entry and skates! It gets packed in here pretty quickly so try to go earlier during the session. They also have special sessions tailored to different crowds. Thursday night is their adult skate night. The rink and decor is a little outdated and there are some parts of the wall with carpet falling off. It's not the fanciest rink but it still makes for a good time. Make sure you check their hours because they aren't open all day. The staff is very attentive and helpful and make it fun for all the skaters. I competed in roller skating as a young girl, so I was excited to take my son roller skating for his first time. We have visited Neville twice on Wednesdays and I couldn't be more pleased with facility and staff. This establishment is very clean, family friendly, and the staff is very attentive to the safety of their customers. Having a new skater, the staff in the floor were always on top of keeping watchful eyes for those who had needed a moment to pick themselves back up and shielding them from any potential collisions from others. Went there for our first time today. Parents are required to stay with anyone under 18, and must pay a full entry fee even if not skating. To add insult to injury we were directly asked to give up our table in the cafe while we were still Eating our food. My son had a party on Saturday and the person who seemed as though she was the owner was very tasteless. My host however for the party was excellent. The owner treated the host very weird which made me totally uncomfortable. I hope to never have to deal with her again. She definitely made the experience there hard to ever want to come back. This rink captures the essence of a retro roller skating experience. Jim Park, your friendly neighborhood rink owner, has done a great job with keeping the multicolored lights dazzling, the wooden floors clean and sparkling, and the place still has a few of its classic signs, like code numbers for different themed skates. There are modern amenities too. They take cards via smartphone swipe. As a roller derby skater, I often enjoy coming on Wednesday or Thursday nights. Wednesday nights are open skate, usually with a lot of throwback songs playing, and Thursday night is an 18 plus jam skate night, although you don't have to jam skate to be there. (Adults only night is especially a plus if you're worried about tripping over little kids.) Admission is cheaper than weekends and it's never overcrowded these nights. I also brought two of my pre-teen cousins here on a Friday night once. It was different, but fun, light-hearted experience with more recent hit songs, lots of fun games and skaters of all ages on the rink. They were both glad I took them there. In addition to skating and a nifty little snack bar area, there's also a skate shop. I bought my first pair of roller derby skates here earlier this year, as well as a few other skate accessories here and there. I was also surprised that it was pretty cheap to enter considering there aren't many skate rinks around anymore. They have these strange stands with wheels for kids that don't yet know how to skate. You might think that's good for kids. But I believe kids need to learn how I learnt. by falling on your butt a hundred times till you get it. he he. If you don't have your own rollerskates and rent them... bring a thick pair of socks. Their pretty uncomfy. I came here for a friend's birthday with a mix of trepidation and curiosity. I hadn't been on roller skates since the mid-90s and was unsure of how this was going to go 20+ years later! Pros: really reasonable admission and skate rental price. Skates seemed well maintained for rentals. DJ was playing some good and appropriate songs for a Sunday Family Skate session (I don't have kids, but I'd feel awkward skating around to raunchy stuff with so many kids around.) Staff was friendly and patient with my multiple trips between the car and the cashier because I only wanted to bring my debit card in, and they needed my ID and said debit card was too chewed up to go through their Square card reader. Cons: A lot of the facility seems in need of some renovation. Overall? Roller skating was a fun and nostalgic activity. I probably won't make it a regular thing myself, but I can definitely see the appeal for enthusiasts, fun retro date activities, and families. read more

The owner, Jim, seems to sincerely want customers to get the right pair of skates. So he has plenty for you to try out before you buy. The recently redone floor is wonderful. I really like this place. I've been several times and every time has been really fun. They have skate assist things made from PVC pipe that are really helpful for the little ones. The rink itself is nice. There is no weird curve to the wood that I've seen at other skate rinks. The owner is vary nice. I've had the chance to talk to him several time and he's a nice guy willing to help you in any way he can. He is also very knowledgeable in the the footwear department. Weather you like traditional skates or inline skates. Now with all that said the place is pretty dated and the bathrooms need redone. The food isn't the best. We went on Sunday afternoon for the family skate. It was so crowded it was impossible to enjoy. Too many collisions. Besides everyone skating, there were so many people NOT skating that there was nowhere to sit down. They said it's basically always this busy. It took me three pairs of skates to find one that wasn't awful, and I had to wait in a long line each time. I understand the "no gum" rule but the "no cameras" rule sucks. On the positive side, the price is reasonable, the place has real retro appeal i.e. probably unchanged since the 70s, and the wood skating surface is smooth. My sister, Bobby and I wanted to show my 4 year old niece a glimpse of our childhood. We surprised her and decided to come here. She had never been on skates before. We picked a Friday which was surprisingly a slow day due to high school football games. At first, We tried the 4 wheel skates and went around the rink once. She looked like a newborn giraffe haha. It was quite comical. They had plastic skates that go around shoes. We figured that may work better.. And the did until they kept breaking because she was a little advance and going fast in them. We decided to go back to the skates and teach her but it wasn't working. She was fully depending on us and the wall. We tried asking for one of those kid crutch things that help keep them stable. Instead, the owner brought a worker out to teach my niece how to skate!!!! They went around the rink slowly but surely. She was doing amazing. It was so of them nice to personally help her. They also informed us of the lessons they offer on Saturday's. $10 for an hour lesson plus skating time! We are thinking about that as well as buying my niece her own skates. My daughter and her friends wanted to roller skate and found this establishment. The website advertised a tween/teen/young adult skate so my wife and I gathered everyone up and drove to the rink. The website also mentioned that a parent or adult must be present with the kids which wasn't an issue, we planned on watching the kids skate anyway. I was quite surprised, however, when I was told that the adults were being charged the full admission price especially since it was an establishment rule that they were required to be there. In other similar situations, the adults were charged a nominal fee for entry, if anything. When I asked the cashier she started ranting about how "my governor" required them to count everyone. I was a bit taken about as I am neither a region or a state and was unaware that I had my own governor. When I tried to explain that there were multiple ways to "count" people without charging admission I was rudely told to pay or get out. The kids got their skates and headed out to the floor. Within a song or two, the DJ announced the house rules and it became a nice game throughout the evening for my wife and I to count the number of times no one actually enforced said rules. There were 8 hoodies with their hoods up, 4 people with earbuds/headphones in, and 12 people with hats on the skating floor. We were also surprised at the number of adults skating during a tween/teen skate. Adjusting for the college kids due to the proximity of RMU, there were at least a dozen adults on the floor. Once the kids were done skating, they returned their skates to the counter and the counter attendant immediately turned around and handed a pair of the skates to another child at the counter. No sanitization process, no cleaning, nothing. Straight from one child's foot to another. The only positive that I can say is that the rink attendants (the actual employees skating on the floor) were very good at their jobs and pretty attentive to more inexperienced skaters. read more

My Mother and father, aunt and uncle all competed at the Neville Roller rink in the fifties. As kids, in the sixties we went there nearly every Sunday night to skate. I remember the owner's name was Tony. I think I was about 17 (1980) the last time I was there. Great to see it is still open. read more

There were zero COVID precautions in place. The line outside the door was the first red flag. Once you get inside, zero staff or customers were wearing masks. So many people were let in, it was dangerous to roller skate. You couldn't go three feet without crashing into someone. The staff was not friendly either.
