Well as luck would have it on a Tuesday night. I was looking for a place to eat, and they were open. I've missed out on this gem for many years. The hostess and the wait staff were amazingly polite and friendly. At 7:30 pm on a Tuesday it was near empty and quiet. The steak sandwich was excellently done, perfectly to the request of medium. The onion rings were crisp and juicy. The potato and cheese soup was thick, creamy and just really brought the feeling of fall is coming with its flavors and warmth. A Great Basin Icky paired well with the meal, and it was a pleasant walk home with a very full belly, a deep warmth and a pleasant dining experience. Don't miss a chance to visit PJs. Just good basic French Toast. Nothing bougie, just good French Toast. The eggs were eggs but the sausage was quite good. Rich with flavor. I was glad that I did finally drop in. Located in a little strip mall on Valley Road, it's an unassuming place from the outside. The inside is small, but comfortable and it felt very "homey". We were greeted and sat promptly by a personable young man that brought us water. The owner then brought us our drinks...a margarita for my dining companion and a Mandarin Jarritos for me. My sip of the margarita tasted amazing! Great balance and flavor. We also received a basket of chips and salsa. You could tell that they were made fresh to order. The chips were crispy and hot. The salsa was outstanding...fresh cilantro...balanced combination of flavors with a nice, subtle kick of spiciness at the back end. Not too spicy...just right. I usually have to ask for something hotter...not in this case. The food was amazing! My dining companion ordered the Chile Relleno plate and I got the Molcajete. The prices are outstanding and the amount of food? Huge plates! My Molcajete was sizzling hot and overflowing with chicken, beef, shrimp, nopales and ground beef mixed with veggies. A large plate of refried beans and spanish rice also accompanied this presentation. Fresh, hot, delicious corn tortillas rounded out each of our orders. We were also given a couple of squeeze bottles of sauces...green and red...to add to our meals if we wanted. Freshly made and the bottles were presented in a plastic tub filled with ice to keep them cold. Great addition to the already amazing food! There's also a nice selection of Mexican hot sauces on the table for you to choose from. We both took to-go boxes...so much food! Mine lasted for 2 more meals! Felt like I was at a restaurant from kitchen nightmares and Gordon Ramsay was going to walk in at any second. I had terrible gas and pain after getting home even 5 hours later so I am pretty sure the chili relleno had gluten, though that's my fault. We ended up here because there were not many decent options open at 3:30 pm. It was a place nobody really wanted to go to and I do not imagine that we will ever find ourselves here ever again. Secondly, the bar surface that i chose to eat at was sticky. Now this is just after opening at 11:30a. Not that eating surfaces should ever be sticky but it is somewhat more understandable at the end of a day rather than the beginning. I ordered the two fish taco platter with rice and beans. My first bite of rice and beans seemed a bit salty. I have had bland beans before but never beans as over salted as these were. Then i bit into the taco and it followed the same flavor profile of being too salty. But it was garnished well and the fish filet was of good proportion, but it didn't look fresh and certainly did not taste very good. In fact i left one whole taco uneaten, which i NEVER do because i am a fish taco addict, but the flavor just got so salty i couldn't eat anymore. And since the rice and beans were salty also i couldn't really eat any more of that either. I left half my plate uneaten. A rarity for me. Also the chips and salsa are NOT complimentary but i must say they were the best thing i had there. Still, $6 for chips and salsa that are free elsewhere is poor value. Net net, those who say they have the best tacos ever need to get out more. There are plenty of other places in midtown that are hands down better than antonios.
