i was only at his clinic for 15 min. Dr Neuwelt saw my crooked finger and pictures of my rashes on my phone. got a medical book, showed me pics of Still Disease. He said, "you have Stills Disease!" Dr Neuwelt issued blood tests and X-ray of my hands. He Gave me a print out about the disease. Told me to schedule an appointment in 8 wks. No physical, didn't even touch me. I researched the disease I was diagnosed with. This type of disease is considered a diagnosis of exclusion. I was seen Aug 21, 2025. Notes on My Chart was only issued Aug 27. it said, POSSIBLE. Singing a different tune. Most likely, he saw the lab results. All my lab works are negative. A week later, I was examined by a UCSF Rheumatologist . he examined me thoroughly. I don't have Stills Disease. I was Referred to an autoimmune doctor. read more

This knucklehead misdiagnosed my wife with lupus 30 years ago and got all upset when we got a second opinion from Stanford University, who said 100% she did not have lupus. His inflated ego disagreed. read more

I would recommend Dr Neuwalt to any one suffering from mystery symptoms for yrs I had pain headaches then mysteriously lost 45 pounds and started bruising so primary Dr referred me to Dr neuwalt who diagnosed me with lupus!! I am ready to bet money that a BETTER expert in rheumatology does not exist on the entire west Coast of the USA - and perhaps in the entire country. After seeing MANY many MANY physicians over the years, this one MD was able to diagnose my unusual form of arthritis accurately and finally begin to treat me. As a result, for the first time in many many years I am almost pain free. I sit in the waiting room often noting patients there from all over the country. This is a physician who does the very studies often from which breakthroughs come. I highly recommend Dr. Neuwelt. And he's a pretty jovial nice guy as well. Sensible and sharp - this is the guy for you if you have any form of arthritis or immune system disease such as lupus. Staff, on the other hand, other than his long time office manager Noreen, is, as so often happens, problematic. The clerk there, Rina, really needs to be let go. She is lax in her attitude, a poor communicator, and will fail to follow up as promised. If only MDs this good would be equally careful in choosing their clerical staff... It is the clerical staff here which prompts me to rate this with 4 instead of 5 stars. If you can't get past the front door to see the MD, what good is such a great MD. read more

My wife had had some mysterious medical difficulties for many years, and our infectious diseases doctor recommended Dr. Neuwelt. She said 'he's the best we have!'. She then laughed and added, , 'he'll figure you out the way no-one else will, but bring a book along while you are waiting -- he takes a long time with every patient". He does indeed -- my wife (and I, when I accompany her) have never felt rushed when discussing her unusual medical difficulties, but rather grateful for his full, unhurried and thoughtful attention. He discovered several conditions she had which were not the disorders themselves but rather had made her vulnerable to the disorders. At one point, he ordered some hospital procedures and some brief stays in hospital . During two of her hospitalizations he came to visit her, once apologizing that he had been out of town for a few days!. In the literal sense, I should mention that he twice saved her life. Finally, he is relaxed and easy to speak with and -- she has been well for many years as we know from our annual follow-ups. For the purposes of review, I looked up what else I could find about Dr. Neuwelt. He is listed as "one of the best doctors in the United States". He is an award-winning pioneer in the study of lupus/ other rheumatoid conditions, and has published many articles in medical journals. read more

I went Dr. Neuwelt for chronic pain (fibromyalgia). The good news is he started me on medication which has significantly reduced my pain. However, there are enough problems with his practice that I would never recommend him. 1. He has never given me any kind of physical exam 2. I had an appointment scheduled and appeared at his office on time. I finally I got the attention of someone in his back office. She told me that the doctor was out of town and that all his appointments had been canceled (NOT!) 3. One must expect to wait from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours in the waiting room. I think this in inexcusable and profoundly disrespectful to his patients. 4. It took 3 weeks and four phone calls to have his staff forward my records to my new hematologist. To say I am bitter and angry is an understatement. My experience completely lacked any "caring" by anyone. I am an RN, so maybe I expect too much... read more

Dr Neuweldt is Dr.House. literally. I have been to doctor's for 10 years and did not want to go to any more rheumatologists when my primary care Dr insisted I needed one. Dr Neuweldt diagnosed my condition on the first appointment after reviewing an x-ray from an ER visit two years ago! The ER visit was for level 10 back pain, however the radiologist failed to find the very extensive damage in my lower spine, (sacroiliiac) if Dr neuwelt had only looked at the report, and did not take the time to look at the X-ray himself, my diagnosis would have been completely missed once again. This doctor takes the time to do careful, detailed analysis. Something that is very rare in the medical field today. For this reason patients may have to wait a little while in the waiting room because he does not rush you, and he will not rush his other patients either. He is worth the wait. Like Dr. House, he has residents in the room who are learning from your case as well. (He is not grouchy like Dr. House though, he is very caring and helpful.) After years of suffering I am so relieved and happy to finally have a diagnosis. Also, his staff is very accommodating and helpful. There is a wait to get in for an initial visit. Absolutely horrible experience!! I went with my mom to her appt with Dr. Neuwelt. We waited 1 1/2 HOURS in the waiting room before even being seen. My mom was in excruciating pain from head to toe. Every nerve and muscle hurt everywhere. When we were finally called in, we saw a young Asian man who took her information. He asked her why she was there, etc., and after about 15 - 20 minutes he took us into Dr. Neuwelts office. In his office, the Asian guy told him what my moms complaints were, and they talked back and forth between the two of them using 10 dollar words. I asked him what did he think was wrong with my mom, and he said that she has a lot of different problems going on, so he wasn't sure, and at her age (she's 76) we can expect a lot of different painful things going on. I asked him what about Fibromyalgia - could she possible have that, and he said maybe, she needs to be diagnosed by a NEUROLOGIST, and she should go back and see Dr. Mann in Castro Valley. Not once did he come out from behind his desk to exam her. No physical exam! He said that he would put her on Cymbalta, which should help her with her pain, help the inflammation, and her depression. She is depressed because of the PAIN. My mom sat across from him in his office crying because she was in so much pain, and he did not seem concerned at all. There was a young lady in his office typing notes, and he was more worried about her spelling the words correctly than he was about helping my mom feel better. This was the worst experience we have ever had with a doctor. I would not recommend him to anyone. The girls in the office are very rude and not professional at all. read more

I completely agree with the comment posted by AN above and disagree with comment posted by JOAN C. I went to see Dr. Neuwelt in mid 2009 following the recommendation of my primary care physician. This doctor is both pleasant and competent. I was totally surprised to see him always open the door himself for each and every patient who is waiting to see him, and he always has a smile on his face as he greets his patients. But it gets better. On my first visit to his office, I explained to him about my chronic and rare vascular illness. He asked many pertinent questions such as when it was first diagnosed and where, when and if I had any operations related to the disease. I told him. He immediately picked up the phone and called the hospital where I had the operation inquiring about medical records that happened 15 years earlier. He got a call back with lots of info. One word describes this doctors: THOROUGH. It has been over two years since I last saw this doctor. I just stumbled upon this page now while I was looking up the doctor's phone number. Doctors like Neuwelt are rare these days, very rare. He is to be appreciated for his patience, because he does allow his patients to relax in his office and they are never rushed. I am not sure if JOAN C. is talking about the same doctor that treated me. What AN said about patients coming from long distances to see Dr. Neuwelt is also true as I had had many conversations with many of them while waiting for my turn in the waiting room. read more

brought my mother to her appt. we arrived early to be greeted by a not so pleasant front desk rep, which didn't surprise me since she was probably the same rude, snappy girl on the phone who i made the appointment with. while checking in i ask if the dr is on time with meeting his appt times and she replies , "looks like he is 20mi s behind" i follow with "what is the purpose of having an appointment"? she replies, "unfortunately we have no control how many questions the patients ask". ARE YOU SERIOUS?! how lame and unprofessional is it to push the blame on your patients because the office can't function properly to meet appt times. maybe if the 5 extra employees standing around catching up on the super bowl were actually doing the job they were paid to do, maybe just maybe, could i have time to do other time sensitive things i have pending, then sit here 28mins post arrival time, . they need to fire their current office manger and hire staff u actually cares about the patients and there job. read more
