Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Stein has not been a pleasant one. I also worked in the healthcare industry and would like to have compassion for other healthcare workers, but this doctor is definitely not a people person. Due to both arms and my right elbow injury, his diagnosis was that it was due to my bone structure and genetic makeup. This was new to me since I had never heard that before. I am a larger guy, I don't use my hands and arms for strenuous work, healthy, and work out 3x/week with an experienced coach--nothing out of the ordinary. Working with thousands of people in healthcare and other fields, we come across many different ailments, injuries, and stories. At first, I took it as new education and considered that perhaps my DNA structure and genetics were contributing to my injury and pain. I mentioned this to colleagues, other doctors at work, and experienced professionals, and they said they had never heard of this before. While not completely ruled out, it was unusual. After receiving my MRIs and X-rays, I showed up for my appointment and waited close to 2 hours, which is excessive considering it was scheduled. When I was finally called in, Dr. Stein did not greet me and instead commented about having to skip his lunch break due to a busy day. I understand demanding schedules, but there was no acknowledgment that patients are also taking time out of their lives--missing work, managing responsibilities, and traveling to appointments. A simple courtesy call from staff would have gone a long way. I remained calm and open-minded. I noticed another patient leaving unhappy. When I went in, I asked if he could check my other arm, as I had started experiencing soreness. He immediately dismissed it, saying nothing would show up and did not examine it. Within a week, that same arm developed increased pain and numbness, despite avoiding heavy use and refraining from working out. I've met many professionals like Dr. Stein, and it was clear that his level of expertise contributes to an ego that comes across as dismissive. He appeared rushed and condescending during all visits. On my final visit, while discussing surgery scheduling, I asked additional questions to better understand the procedure. He said he only had limited time to answer. After waiting over 2 hours, I would expect at least 15 minutes of clear communication before a procedure that carries risks. I understand his practice is a business, but business also requires trust, communication, and respect. Patients should feel confident in the person operating on them. Comments he made about preferring certain insurance because they paid more were unprofessional. Regardless, he will be receiving a large sum for surgery. While I believe he has the technical ability to perform surgery, I am not comfortable with someone who is rushed and potentially distracted. If appointments are rushed, I wouldn't want someone to rush through a surgical procedure just to get to another appointment or procedure. This leaves more room for error. The reality is doctors cannot guarantee outcomes, but they are responsible for proper care, communication, and follow-up. Once you sign surgical paperwork, you waive many rights--even in cases of error. If there were stronger accountability systems now, I believe interactions like this would be different. And Dr Stein would treat his patients with more respect. Also work with many clients who are also legal representatives, and although there are more legal avenues being put into place if something goes wrong, but I would prefer not to be in that position due to lack of accountability or care. His staff seemed disengaged and under pressure. I've worked in environments where teams create a welcoming atmosphere--this did not feel like one. The way he spoke to his staff suggested stress and tension. It seems like a 50/50 chance of a smooth and full recovery without complications from him or his staff during follow-up. After reading additional reviews, my experience seems consistent with others, which validated my instincts to seek another surgeon who felt more respectful. *To previous and future patients: trust your observations and instincts. If Andrew Stein feels like the right fit, he may help you. If not, you have options. Sometimes going a little further for the right provider makes all the difference. Absolutely worst doctor patient experience of my life from start to finish. The surgery made my finger worse. I went in with mild swan neck deformity on my baby finger and after surgery I came out with a 30 degree bend on my finger. The surgery was a nightmare horrible experience and I will never go back to Dr Frankenstein. I remember getting to the Fremont Surgery Center 5am and they pushed all the patients that came in after me ahead of me. They rolled me in the back away from all the other patients to an area it looked like a storage room and left me there. After about 3 hours and having to complain about it I was finally taken in to surgery. I remember seeing Dr. Stein walk by me and I was expecting him to greet me but instead he ignored me with a scowl on his face. It was the most frightening experience of my life. When I met him earlier in his office he had previously lured me in with his politeness and cool demeanor but he's really a demon inside. I was a fool to ignore my intuitions I felt in his office with his staff and surgical team at the Fremont Surgery Center. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. He and his staff are pure evil. They only wanted my insurance money but did not care about me. I'm sure their highly intelligent staff will respond to discount me and my review and blame me for the poor surgery that went terribly wrong. Or my horrible cheap insurance company that according to them didn't have qualified hand surgeon therapists to give me the proper therapy so they recommended I go to their therapists and pay them out of pocket or not have therapy at all and my hand would automatically heal and the 30 degree radius bend would eventually decrease to about 10-15 degrees. read more

Literally those worst ethical doctor when it comes to safety protocols for covid. I had an appointment schedule simply for him to discuss the results of a recent procedure (nerve test). Was even told this is for a review and conversation. I asked that instead of my putting myself at risk of this appointment could be done over the phone. Excellent doctor! I took my daughter in for a large lump on her hand. It was not immediately clear what it was so Dr. Stein ordered an MRI. It was determined to be a ganglion cyst, and Dr. Stein was able to remove it in his office without much discomfort to my daughter. Dr. Stein has a superb bedside manner! I loved how he spoke directly to my daughter (she is 14) and explained everything about the diagnosis and the removal procedure. My wife had ulnar nerve relocation surgeries on both arms. Carpal tunnel both hands. Trigger finger release on one hand. He also removed a blood clot in her wrist. He was able to do three surgeries on each arm during the same day. This means her recovery was much shorter than recovering from 6 separate surgeries. Dr Stein is meticulous. He dictates notes to the computer while you are in the room. We really like that because we get to hear what his exact thoughts are. He is very efficient in that he does all of the orders for procedures and gets the ball rolling very quickly. He is very personable and enjoyable to be around. His staff is the best! They get things moving before we even walk out of the room. We have never had to wait more than 10 minutes to see him. My neighbor also had the same surgeries from Dr Stein about 10 years ago. She highly recommended him to us. There were specialists that were closer, but we wanted the best and I think we got it! read more

He looked at my finger move in two directions didn't do a real examination even interrupted the person taking a gripping measurement..then proceeded lecturing me.."these claims cause stain on employers and employees and they can fire you for any reason"..."where do we start drawing the line on these claims"....and so forth... I was appalled, this is unacceptable behavior for someone we turn to for help to overcome injuries and illness. I want there to " work the system". It's probably been 10-15 years since Dr. Stein fixed my carpal tunnel. I had done my other hand with another surgeon a few years before that the "old fashioned way", but Dr. Stein convinced me his arthroscopic way was the best, as it was the least invasive, and the hand was stronger afterwards. It was amazing. Everyone was very informative and professional, from beginning to end. I walked out after surgery with a BANDAID on my hand, and all the recovery was so much faster and easier than before. And the hand looks normal, and is still strong, where the other one looks all shriveled, and is much weaker. My husband goes there now for other issues, as they occur, and he can't say enough about how great they are. I would have put a review on Yelp before if I had thought of it, but at the time they were not really a "thing". read more

4 of my family members have had various surgeries by Dr. Stein in San Leandro. I recently had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery and am thrilled with my results! He uses a technique called minimal open and the incision is tiny! I was able to return to my desk job the next morning, just using ice and tylenol for pain management. He eventually did need the surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. This really helped his condition and especially as his work involved being capable with both hands in fine motor skills. Ok, after reading a couple of negative reviews, I feel I have to come to Dr. Stein's defense. I had a GREAT experience with him and his staff. I had scheduled a surgery with a doctor in Fremont who is noted as a great hand surgeon. As I sat there with IV in arm and waiting to go in; I was told that I would go under general anesthesia with a BREATHING tube. My immediate thought was, "For a carpel tunnel surgery???!!" I had that instant gut feeling to run. I listened as patient after patient came out of surgery having trouble waking and breathing. The longer I sat there, the more I felt I needed to back out. When I told the nurse I was going to cancel she immediately went to get the Anesthesiologist who came over to my bed angry. He argued that full anesthesia was necessary and was clearly annoyed. I was never told that I would have to go under general anesthesia until I arrived. This place reminded my of a turn and burn, money machine. I did not like the pressure, the lack of explanation and the feeling that I was just a dollar sign and not a human being. I go with my gut in situations like this and so I left....and I am SO glad I did. I started immediately looking for a new doctor and looked at San Francisco magazine's list of the top doctors in the Bay Area by specialty. Dr. Stein was VERY impressive. When I called them to schedule an appointment they told me they could get me in relatively soon. I saw Jen, the PA, who is GREAT. She explains EVERYTHING throughly and answers all and any questions. Unfortunately they did say I'd have to wait for several weeks for surgery because they were booked. I had been suffering for 3.5 months with moderately severe carpel tunnel so this was disappointing but not their fault. My hands constantly felt like it feels when you get shocked. In addition, at night they felt like someone poured battery acid on them AND I had excruciating shooting pains from the top AND bottom of my hands down my fingers. I honestly would have rather had my hands amputated than to live with this horrible torture for the rest of my life. About a week into waiting I got a call from the office saying someone cancelled their surgery and would I like to take it. I jumped on it. As Jen explained, the surgery was done under local anesthesia, tourniquet technique and twilight sedation. I had almost zero fear because of this. The entire surgery took no more than half an hour and I had no problems. The best part? My carpel tunnel symptoms were GONE...all of them, instantly. I am 4 weeks out and healing well. They did explain that I would have something called "pillar pain", which I am starting to notice but it's not anything compared to what I was going through. I am SO grateful to Dr. Stein and was so happy with the way I was treated there that I went in with some Sees candy and a hug to thank him. The only thing I can make of these negative reviews is because Dr. Stein does not subscribe to the belief that carpel tunnel is automatically caused by repetitive motion from a particular job. I've read the newest info on this and though it can be, through vibrational injury; most other cases are hereditary. That was definitely my case as my mother also has it. He immediately knew what was wrong with my wrist based on my symptoms that I have been struggling with for months. So thankful I saw him and excited to finally heal!! My appointment with this doctor was very disturbing. My RN rep joined me for the appointment and was witness to this. He started the appointment by telling me workers comp horror stories- its unlikely the surgery is approved, it can take years, you can run out benefits before you're healed, using your own insurance would be faster. "You are likely pre-diabetic (which I'm not ) and that's why you have carpal tunnel, not due to repetitive work, that is a myth." "Women are built differently and sleep differently, and that's why women have higher instances of carpal tunnel than men." HORRIFIC My head was reeling! This man really doesn't believe in the validity of workers compensation claims or the experiences of his patients. As the son of a neurosurgeon, I've spent a few summers working in Doctor's offices and spent a lot of time around doctors, surgeons in particular. The way Dr. Stein conducts his practice reminds me very much of one of my father's partners. Rather than take complicated cranial cases, he would churn out disk surgery after disk surgery after disk surgery because it was a relatively simple procedure to perform with low risk and paid well. Helping patients was an ancillary goal. He was in it for the money. I'm sure Dr. Stein is a competent surgeon and can help you, *if* you need surgery. If you are not a good candidate, or you are not willing to pursue surgery as your first option, you will probably not enjoy your experience at this practice because you will be viewed as wasting his time. I've visited twice, dealing exclusively with his PA, and both times left me feeling rushed through the diagnosis. Dr. Stein could hardly be bothered to even say hello. If you are nervous about surgery or want to pursue pain managing, non-surgical treatment first, I can't recommend this doctor. As a side note, I've noticed many of the reviews posted here are angry at finding out Carpal Tunnel is not caused by RSI. Folks, I hate to break it to you, but this is the truth. I have Carpal Tunnel because my dad has Carpal Tunnel. My brother has carpal tunnel. The three of us all have very different occupations. In this respect, it's not fair to shoot the messenger. Hi, I have to say I was amazed at the fact that some people posted negative reviews about Dr. Stein, but then there are always some people you can't make happy. My personal experience was fantastic, he dealt with a broken wrist that another doctor had really made a mess of, Thank goodness I found Dr. Stein when I did and he had me in surgery the next day and corrected the botched up way the previous doctor had left my wrist. Both Dr. Stein and his personal assistant Jenn were kind and considerate and even more important they educated me on the process as to what to expect both during the surgery and after. The office is extremely well run, the staff extremely personable and the wait time is always just a few minutes. I hope I don't fall and break more bones but if that happened there would be only one doctor I would trust to take care of the problem, Finally, I would give 10 stars to Dr. Stein if I could, he not only knows his craft but is exceedingly gentle and patient, just a great guy! read more

Dr. Andrew Stein - An MD Hand Specialist who went to Yale. Has an EXCELLENT understanding of human anatomy and very expertly diagnosed all the areas where my hands have been suffering of tendinitis. He clearly doesn't believe in the legitimacy of worker's comp cases, yet accepts them all the time....is he in it for the money? You bet. He does not believe in physical therapy, but in hand surgery. He is a medical doctor and a business man first and foremost....He is keen to point out and suss out any other health diagnosis you may have in order to derail a worker's comp claim of repetitive stress injury. That's my assessment about this professional services in a nutshell. If you'd like to read about my experience, read on.... One of the first things Dr. Stein said as we delved into the appointment was, "I will be as empathetic as possible, and will educate you on the anatomy of the hand, therapies available, and how worker's comp works. You may do whatever you like with the information and it's up to you if you'd like to pursue treatment here. Try to listen to what I'm about to tell you with an open mind and suspend judgment until you hear me out.". OK....sounds reasonable, right? Well, I think it was just to manipulate me and paralyze my own instinct to question that some of what he was saying was preposterous! I never walked out of a specialist's office feeling so undermined in my life! My head was reeling from some of the things he told me; such as "You are pre-diabetic and that's why you have tendinitis; not from the years of repetitive computer and mousing work you do....UMMM, excuse me, but I'm NOT pre-diabetic or diabetic! Why would any doctor try to brush away the reason I'm coming to you in the first place?! Again, just ridiculous. From a work standpoint, He DOESN"T EVEN BELIEVE that RSI from computer work is REAL/LEGITIMATE!....I asked him point blank about this! Part of his agenda was to tell me that worker's comp cases for RSI are only accepted in CA and one other state, and only b/c I work for the County, adding that it's taxpayer dollars paying for my therapy and if I worked somewhere else I'd probably be fired from my job....belittling? Oh yes, on SO MANY LEVELS! In my experience, County staff are HARD WORKING, CARING, DILIGENT WORKERS, and PAY TAXES EVERY DAY! When I was explaining to him the history and progression of my work-related tendinitis, he kept saying "Slow down, I can't keep up with you....maybe you're a little wound up"; clearly implying that I was anxious. I explained that I've been waiting 2 months to see him and there was lots of administrative errors in getting the case established, so I had a lot that I've been waiting to tell him. Still, he didn't seem to appreciate that; in making me suspend my own judgment, he'd already judged me. He told me "I've seen 10,000 women just like you! You're no different." I could keep going, but I think the readers will get the point. In the end, he was able to excise a painful cyst in my hand, and helped diagnose a TFC tear (which he then told me "Research has shown that TFC tears are related to age, not repetitive office work")....UGH. Really?! Who in their right mind believes that crap. When there's pain and you KNOW where and why you have it, why would a good doctor try to disprove it? AND, like many of the other reviews here, I too was squelched when I wanted to ask questions....he makes you feel like it's wrong or that you're all worked up and a "nervous nelly" if you want to get to the bottom of things. Not okay. Anyway, unless you need SURGERY and are ready for it please save yourself the heartache and insults. Maybe Dr. Stein has intentions to help people, but his attitude and bedside manner don't come off this way. I can appreciate his intellectual understanding of anatomy and surgical expertise, but that's about it. He did explain some things to me about what's going on with my hands, ergonomically, so that was good. When I told him on a second visit that I felt he boxed me in and pre-judged me, he kind of gave an apology....better than nothing I suppose. Other than that, His office staff at the front desk are pleasant and accommodating. Jen, his PA is a much more pleasant person to work with. It was unfortunate that I didn't get physical therapy through his office, as I hear that some of his other staff are very good. After saffering for almost a year with tendonosis and going through different therapies sent by other doctors (which didn't help) I came to Dr Stein. Doctor explained that I can only really benefit from a surgery. I decided to do the surgery asap. It was right before Christmas. Doctor was very kind and squized me for a surgery the very next early morning, before other people. Everyone was supper nice and doctor did the surgery, very quick. I went to Dr. Stein for a whole bunch of issues, and he was as knowledgeable and as friendly as could be. I had bilateral carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, and tendon repairs by Dr. Stein after another surgeon (who I went to first) attempted to help me and totally messed up. When Dr. Stein saw me he talked to me and explained everything that would need to happen-- he was straightforward and honest. He doesn't sugar coat your diagnosis (whether you like it or not!) which is great, and exactly what I want from a medical professional! My results were outstanding. I went from basically not being able to use my hands or arms, with terrible pain and numbness and the inability to make a firm fist, to having full use of my hands and arms. His office staff were really helpful, including the therapy side of his office. I could not recommend this office highly enough! P.S.-- I saw in other reviews that people are upset from Dr. Stein saying their issues may be weight related, due to how they are sleeping at night, or due to gender. Those things are real risk factors, every hand surgeon I saw had the same conclusions that my problems were most likely caused by how I sleep at night and being female. In fact, before surgery, Dr. Stein tried to correct the nerve damage I had via braces I slept in at night. It wasn't until my nerve damage got worse even after the brace-attempts that he said I needed surgery. read more

One of the most defensive people I have ever come across and one of the worst listeners I have ever come across. Dr. Stein runs an assembly line and misremembered what he said to me as we scheduled surgery for the removal of a bone spur that was causing an elbow bursitis. After that talk, he deferred everything to his staff: zero continuity of care therefore zero responsibility taking for the behaviors of his gruff PA and staff. When I say gruff, her ego is the size of that of a cardiovascular or neurosurgeon therefore her bedside manner is horrible. The surgery, thankfully, when smoothly enough. Dr. Stein, I believe, woke me right after the surgery while being wheeled to post op to give me a bit of information about the surgery even though I would black out a moment later because I WAS STILL UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF GENERAL ANESTHESIA: that is NOT the time to talk with your patient, unless you don't care about their understanding what you want to tell your patient. Upon leaving the surgery center, I received post-op instructions that stated to follow the post op instructions that I received at my pre-op appointment. Because I wanted to know what Dr. Stein had told me, I called the office the day after surgery and requested to speak with Dr. Stein. I received a call back from the gruff PA. I was told information that was troublesome for many reasons, especially from the perspective that I question if I would have ever received this information if I had not requested the call from Dr. Stein. The surgery included excision of some of my bursa, something of which I was not aware. I was given new post op instructions, something that should have happened (legally) upon my release from the surgery center: I was told to keep the surgical dressing on "3-5 days, really five days is best" instead of the original two days in the pre-op instructions. At my follow up appointment, Dr. Stein was defensive the entire time and kept interrupting me, like I had some ulterior motive, like I was making the whole thing up. When I was finished talking, he started by saying "can I talk now?" How defensive and childish and proving that he was more concentrating on his feelings of defense than on what I was saying. He has such a assembly line manner of how he does his business and how he defers care to paraprofessionals I don't think he remembers what he is doing to which patient. I do believe he is a skilled surgeon, but being a surgeon means interacting with patients and Dr. Stein seems to have forgotten that his business is PATIENTS, not his expedience, especially at his patient's expense. I am a doctorally-trained healthcare professional and I have been in the medical field since 1986. Because Dr. Stein is incapable of listening to patients, he speaks to patients right after surgery at his convenience and certainly not with the patient's capacity to comprehend at that time, his assembly-line deferral to paraprofessionals throughout the entire process of care, and his not understanding standards of care therefore he does not follow them, no patient should use Dr. Stein as their surgeon. He is a dangerous healthcare practitioner should something go wrong; if there are no complications and if you don't need post-op instructions or timely follow up by a surgeon post surgery, then you are likely safe. Was referred to dr. Stein because he is so called the best out there.. maybe so but if your black with tattoos he will belittle your intelligence. I didn't understand the way he phrased a scenario so after every word he thought I didn't understand he says wait maybe I should use words you understand!! He didn't thoroughly look at my hand I think because it was the work from another DOCTOR. These doctors just want the money and have no care for their patients it's all a statistical number game and study with these doctors dealing with a job injury you will never get the attention you need only statistical study numbers and time frames where you should be post op of surgery.. this guy is a joke STAY AWAY read more

I saw Dr. Stein. Did not have a pleasant experience. I went in for my fractured finger. Saw his assistant first (which was great) and then he came in and it all went bad. He looked at my finger then started to bend it and not in a gentle way. I first told him that I would bend it at home and would start to feel dizzy. He completely ignored what I had just mentioned. I told him it hurts really bad and he continued to force bend and I proceeded to tell him I was getting dizzy, he continued and I fainted. I ended up staying there longer than I had anticipated because I was on the floor the whole time. He never came to check up on me once! I also went to see him to get more information about how to take care of my finger and all he said was to not wear the splint. Would NOT recommend seeing him. Seems like he does not care about his patients! I would recommend the therapy section right across the hall. I did see them and they were amazing. Dr. Stein saved my husbands arm functioning. He was very professional and knowledgeable and helpful. He diagnosed my husband with a pinched Ulnar Nerve and said he needed to have surgery ASAP to preserve as much function as possible. He was very frank about the urgency and situation my husband was in and we appreciated that. My husbands surgery went well and physical therapy too. The follow up appointments were good and thanks to Dr. Stein for helping him! The office staff was really nice but the PA is weird. She talks about herself too much and about personal details nobody wants to hear. I did read some bad reviews here about Dr. Stein before we came to him and I do see how people could have a difficult time with him, but he's very good at what he does and I believe he genuinely cares. Dr Stein has treated me for two carpal tunnels, nine trigger fingers, one cubital tunnel, and a frozen shoulder over the past ten years. Every single procedure was a complete fix with ZERO reoccurances. I cannot imagine the pain I would have gone through if he and his staff hadn't taken care of me so well and so quickly. He is extremely patient, confident and really explains what is wrong with you and your options. I would never go to another doctor if I had the option. On a side note he has had the same amazing therapists, nurses and PA, Jennifer since the first time I went to him. They are all a wonderful team! read more

I had hand surgery there it's more of a production line get the surgery and that's basically all we're going to do for you. if you would like a doctor's note for your work we will not give you any restrictions nor would we write anything on your doctor's note as far as when you can return to work. They have issues and problems with filling out a doctor's notes for your work say they can't do that this place really. we do not provide any referrals for therapy this is a office that really is very unprofessional when it comes to clients. They state that therapy won't help and they never get it approved everything is like they never this they never that so I stopped going there and I have chosen a new doctor hopefully it works out but I would not recommend this place. When you have hand surgery you're allowed to have six weeks off for total healing they gave me nine days ridiculous and I work in a jail facility where I use my hands crazy. read more

Dr Stein did a phenomenal job on my carpal tunnel surgery in January of 2014. Yes, there was a long wait prior to my appointment. However, he spends lots of time talking to you about your condition, lab-work, and what to expect for an outcome. He even provides HGTV for your entertainment. His work is excellent. Yes, office is not fancy, but it's clean. Better yet, the staff is wonderful. I could care less about the beautification of the office. My goal was to have a completely functional, pain-free hand. I was reluctant to do the surgery, and so I put it off for way too long, 10 years. By the time got into see Dr. Stein, I was hurting badly. The surgery took all of about 12 minutes, and my recovery was so smooth. My hand healed quickly and with no visible scar; oh yes, I am pain free. Many thanks to Dr. Stein and his staff. read more

I saw Dr. Stein 3 weeks after a hand injury with extreme swelling , redness , limited mobility of middle finger, small open wound , and pain. He told me there was no infection or structural damage without ordering an MRI he came to this conclusion with just looking at my hand and moving my fingers. Three days later I was still in a lot of pain so I saw my primary care and I had a very serious cellulitis infection that took 2 rounds of antibiotics to clear. I Was still experiencing swelling , pain , and limited mobility so I was referred to another hand surgeon that ordered an MRI and results showed that I have a torn ligament with fluid accumulation in joints. I found Dr. Stein to be arrogant and condescending as he told me I just had a bruise and it was going to take a few more weeks to heal. He minimized my pain and was dismissive without ordering anything to confirm his diagnosis of a bruise which he was clearly wrong about. I gave this review one star because it wouldn't post without one. read more
