Recently I had issues with pain in a bunion. I consulted a podiatrist who recommended surgery. I decided to seek a second opinion with Dr. Mann, as I had seen him before. Dr. Mann took the conservative route and suggested a cortisone injection, avoiding surgery. He did the procedure that day and now I am pain free! I can freely walk again and for this I am so grateful. He said I can receive such injections up to every 6 months and I much prefer this to surgery. Also, he said if it didn't work (which it has) I would only be incapacitated a few days without driving if I did have the surgery. My podiatrist told me it would be 2 1/2 to 3 weeks without driving. I believe Dr. Mann. This is not, as I said, the first time I've seen him. About 8 years ago I had terrible pain in my ankle. Another doctor sent me to physical therapy. The pain became excruciating and the PT thought I was being wimpy. I then took my images to Dr. Mann. He found a torn ligament. He set me on track to heal my ankle, again, avoiding surgery. He put me in a boot and on one of those knee wheeler things. I was on this for several months, checking in with Dr. Mann as I went. And it worked! I healed my tear without surgery! Again, here he took the conservative route and avoided an unnecessary operation. People have commented on his bedside manner. I find him short and to the point, yet caring. Before my surgery with Dr. Mann I never thought my ankle would feel normal again. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Mann to anyone with foot/ankle/knee issues. Yes, interacting with Dr. Mann can be awkward at times (in response to the reviewers who mention his bedside manner), but I actually feel like he really cares, much more so than the typical orthopedic surgeon (previous ortho surgeons I've had are charismatic but kind of psychopathic). I had two previous ankle surgeries by two previous surgeons, issues with both prior surgeries especially the second one. Dr. Mann corrected the issue from the second surgery and also found a ton of scar tissue and bone fragments that had been left behind in my ankle by prior surgeons. I saw the before and after arthroscopic pictures of my ankle and I was floored. My ankle is so free of debris now thanks to Dr. Mann. I appreciated that he listened to me about all the pain and issues I was having, took my concerns seriously, and fixed the issues in surgery. I feel like my ankle is almost all the way back to normal, which I NEVER thought would happen after my initial injury and first two surgeries. Also I must say that his bedside manner gets way warmer the longer you know him, I think he's just introverted. Again, I didn't get a psychopath vibe from him (which is a vibe I've gotten from previous more gregarious surgeons who, in my experience, will hack away at your bones with zero regard for your well-being). Dr. Mann has seriously restored my faith in orthopedic surgery. I did not have any hope for the world of orthopedic surgery nor for my ankle feeling normal again after my initial injury and first two surgeries, but I seriously feel like I almost have my old, pre-injury ankle back now!!! TWO ANKLE WAY UP! I have had the lateral ligaments on both my ankles reconstructed by Dr. Mann. The right in 2016 and the left in 2021. After listening to Dr. Mann, being disciplined in my PT, and continuing exercises on occasion to this day I am beyond pleased with the experience and results. Dr. Mann is an exemplar in his profession. He listens and is concise on how to rebuild and maintain the health of my ankles to the ideal functional level. After a long track record of severely rolling my ankles before the point of breaking, I was finally advised the only way to optimally strenghten them was through surgery. I was skeptical but in 2016 I was exhausted from severely rolling my ankle every 6 months to a year. I blindly chose Dr. Mann and was of course skeptical about the negative "reviews". After observing how stable my operated right ankle was compared to my left while balancing in yoga I elected to reconstruct my left in 2020. I initially researched this time for another surgeon that had come highly recommended post my first operation. Coincidentally, this surgeon had stopped focusing on feet and immediately referred me to his top choice, Dr. Mann. The rest is history and I have no regrets. Dr. Jeffrey Mann a 2.5 star experience. I went to Dr. Mann for a broken/fractured toe. I had been to Urgent Care immediately after the injury and wanted to follow up 3 weeks later b/c of unmitigated pain level. I had been told that toes take a long time to heal and wanted to confirm the pain was normal, to see if I may have exacerbated the initial injury and to confirm if there were any risks or potential downstream issues caused by the slow healing of my broken toe. As stated elsewhere - no bedside manner, not patient centered and perfunctory. He was easily annoyed with questions and requests to explain the terms he was using. He seemed bored with his job or bored with mundane cases like mine and like he would prefer not to have to interact. He made it clear that my 'silly toe' issue was mundane, that the pain could last 6 months but to check back in 6 weeks and then to check back 3 weeks after that. My main concern, after learning that broken toes are painful and can take a long time to heal, was to ensure that it wouldn't cause other downstream issues (if I'm walking differently for 6 months will it cause other issue - knees, hips etc). It wasn't until my 3 visit that he stated that when this toe is broken it doesn't matter whether it heals or not as long as the bone isn't jutting out (which it wasn't). He could have simply explained this at my first visit rather than bill insurance for 3 visits and engage in conversations he had no interest in. Dr. Mann came recommended by one of his colleagues at the Ortho Sports practice who I love. I assumed Dr. Mann as part of a terrific practice and recommended by an awesome peer would likewise be great. I've since seen Dr. Jason Hiatt down the street. He's terrific -- professional and relational competency . He enjoys his job, enjoys people and enjoys understanding and solving problems. Dr.Mann filed collections on me, and this is the only derogatory file on my otherwise perfect credit report. I was a UC Berkeley Athlete that has no idea how medical claims work, moved out of Berkeley soon after Achilles repair/graduating. I had no idea I owed any money to this practice, received no phonecall/mail/letters/email after moving, and then next thing I know, I have a $50.00 collections claim. FOR $50 freakin dollars! And I have a 6-figure salary. I immediately paid off the claim, since it's a trivial amount, and I genuinely had no idea I owed anything (was under the impression athletes had school insurance or something), and for the last 4 years my credit has been negatively impacted. read more

I was referred to Dr. Mann in November 2020 by my GP for a metatarsal plate tear in my right foot from playing tennis. My second toe tendon had broken. I had seen a podiatrist but decided that I wanted the tendon fixed. My GP looked at my toe and without hesitation named Dr. Mann as "the best" for foot surgery. I found Dr. Mann to be straightforward in his diagnosis, that a tendon transfer would be required. He gave me choices on how he would approach the surgery and I got to choose the approach. He also gave me secondary options for straightening the torn toe by shaving down a joint bone, as well as removing a bone spur from the adjacent big toe metatarsal joint. I had had pain and limited range of motion in that joint for YEARS and I never considered that it had a remedy. He was clear in his descriptions and answers to my questions. (The office staff were friendly and efficient, I never waited very long). The surgery was outpatient and straightforward, and Dr. Mann did regular post-op checks on my progress. He put a long pin in my toe to hold it stable, so I had an ortho boot and knee scooter. He had me doing regular physical therapy type movements and bending of joints when it was tolerable. (A shout-out to the surgery facilities, staff members and anesthesiologist who were also top notch). It is now January 2022, and my toes are healed and functioning well. The big toe took many months for the range of motion to increase with no pain, but now I have full range of motion in both toes with no pain. I can't say my tennis has improved, but I am grateful to Dr. Mann for the ability to keep trying! read more

I don't know what people are expecting. I have seen some negative reviews and to be frank... They are unwarranted. First, Dr. Mann did a fantastic job. I severed my right Peroneus Brevis. He did his exam and suggested an allograft replacement. While I am still in the healing stage, I can safely say that his work is clean, efficient and thorough. I am healing faster than I thought. The work was done on August 1st and everything is as he described. He is cautious about promising outcomes. I am fine with that. He should be cautious. He was thorough is answering my questions. It helped that I had my questions written down already. I stuck to the script and he was thorough in his answers. If you are looking for someone to be all warm and fuzzy make you laugh, and hold your hand then look elsewhere. I found him to be informative, perfectly pleasant and efficient. But I did not go to him for those reasons... I went to him because he is one of the Bay Area's finest ankle surgeons!!! Take a look at his CV. It is impressive. So is the allograft in my right ankle. I started the process with Dr. Honsik. He passed me onto Dr. Mann. I am grateful to both. Oh, BTW... this is the same practice that did my shoulder two years ago. Dr. Eppley did that. Dr. Mann was good but in the end, I went with a different doctor who I went to for a second opinion to handle my case. The office/billing was pretty slow and behind. I pretty much have top-notch insurance that doesn't require me to get authorization for a lot of things and this place keeps telling me I need to get recommendations and authorizations -- actions that delayed things. If they called, they would have received info that I didn't need those things and the calls wouldn't have taken that long at all. read more

I tore my Achilles tendon in 2021 and went to see Dr. Mann for an evaluation. Some reviews have said that Dr. Mann does not have the best bedside manner, but I had a different experience with him. He listened and carefully responded to all my questions, provided thoughtful answers, and followed up on my post-accident care. He did a fantastic job repairing my fully torn Achilles and six months post-accident, I am feeling back to 'normal' again. If you need a conservative care minded, but skilled surgeon who is professional, no-nonsense and knows about Achilles repair, I have no reservations recommending him. read more

I had a condition known as a shot big toe joint (there is probably a more technical term). Every time I took a step and pushed off my toes, I felt it. Up until recently, the cure for this was joint replacement or fusion, which locks the joint in place. I considered both until my DPM told me about a new procedure where a surgeon places a Cartiva (organic polymer) implant in the joint which acts as cartilage. Problem was, no one in my state did this, so I called around and found one person in the Bay area that did, Jeffrey Mann. I scheduled an appointment and made the trip to Oakland to see if I was a candidate for this new procedure. I was (which I knew beforehand). We scheduled the surgery for mid-October and I am about seven weeks into recovery. Dr. Mann explained that I may not 100% pain free once it has healed, but it will not be as bad as before the operation. I am a 73 year old runner, and have already started running again, just not long distances, yet. I found Dr. Mann and his staff to be very professional in every way. He is not a very chatty guy, but I always felt comfortable and at ease when with him. He listened to my concerns and always acted on them to my satisfaction. As for access, he was always able to work me in as needed. After my stitches were removed, I managed to get the incision infected. I called the office the next morning and told them what was going on, and was seen within a couple of hours. I saw him three or four times after that for check-ups, always getting in at the appointed time without waiting. I am very happy to have had Dr. Mann do the surgery. Should I have problems with the other big toe in the future, I would not hesitate to have him do it again. In my opinion, he is a very skilled surgeon. read more

After suffering a nasty, nasty sprain to my ankle, and after seeing my regular doctor and a Physical Therapist, I went to see Dr. Jeffrey Mann, an ankle specialist. I needed some insight as to why my ankle was not healing after 4 months. Honestly, I couldn't care less if this man walked on water. He was the least communicative and rudest physician I have ever seen - I'm not exaggerating - and I have seen many in my 55 years. He was unkind and told me almost nothing. I had to push him to talk to me and tell me what was going on. Dr. J. Mann told me everything the PT had already told me, but I didn't have to push her! He even began walking out of the room while I was asking him a question. I followed him, since I needed answers, and he continued to have a disengaged conversation with me out in the hall, in front of everyone else, and as he was reading the next patient's chart at the next examination room! He did not show me the x-ray until I asked. He made no recommendations as to what I should do, particularly in light of the fact that I am a high school dance teacher starting a new school year! I was appalled. Now, I don't need a doctor to be my best friend - and if they show they are a good doctor - then I am perfectly fine with that. Go elsewhere. I had an early appointment on a Monday for foot pain. Nobody was in the waiting room, and yet I waited for half an hour to be escorted back by a nurse. After fifteen minutes, a Physician's Assistant entered and asked a few questions. I told him what I believed the problem/diagnosis to be. He palpated my feet, then he left. Twenty minutes later, he came back and said he thought the problem was the problem that I already suspected. He gave me no treatment plan, no outline or course of what to do, and no strategy . . . only one photocopy of one exercise that is recommended. I never met the doctor. I couldn't point out Dr. Mann from a lineup. I have no idea who he is or what he looks like. He didn't have the courtesy or the professionalism to introduce himself. I don't mind that the PA did the leg-work -- it happens all the time - but I've never been in a circumstance in which I never met the doctor. This wasn't an issue of getting a prescription refilled. Terrible form. Unprofessional to the core. Waste of time. This was my first (and last) time visiting Dr. Mann's office. The only saving grace is that I noticed on my EOB that he was barely reimbursed by my insurance company. Good. He got what he was worth -- practically nothing. The Physician's Assistant said, "If I don't see you back in two months, I'll assume that you're better." It's a safer bet that I'll be looking for a different office with a better and more professional doctor who cares enough about his/her patients to actually meet them. read more

This summer I tore my Achilles tendon, and asked a number of people who I should go to for surgery. In addition to a trusted friend, another Dr. recommended that I see Dr. Jeffery Mann, by simply saying "he's the best". This was my first surgery, I had a lot of questions and concerns, and the combination Dr. Mann and his Physician's Assistant Monica, made me feel comfortable with the procedure. Monica is great! I'm now 3 months post surgery, and ahead of schedule in my recovery. I have 2 friends who've had the same procedure within the past year, and my scar is smaller, and healed faster with no complications. I was walking without crutches and walking w/o a "boot" sooner as well (6 weeks post op). I was impressed with the Surgery Center, and felt in good hands from beginning to end. As far as Achilles tendon surgery goes, if you're looking for a great surgeon and staff, I highly recommend Dr. Jeffery Mann and Monica. read more

I have to disagree with the other two reviewers of Dr. Mann. I went to him with undiagnosed pain in my ankle. He had an Xray done, and then told me the problem was an overtight Achilles tendon, the treatment being many months of stretching. This diagnosis was later disputed by another doctor. I can understand differences of opinion, but I found Dr. Mann to be uncommunicative and unresponsive, to the point where I had to chase him out to the central office area to ask him questions, since he never asked me if I had any. Following his stretching advice has brought no relief after three months. Maybe he's better for surgical problems, but I would never send a friend to see him. read more

THIS IS MY FIRST YELP REVIEW He has the worst bedside manner!!! He saw my father and insisted he only had arthritis in his knee. He did an exam and did not even go over his findings with us until we asked. I requested an MRI and he said NO, a brace and crutches will solve the problem. I asked him if he could tell if he had tears from the exam and he said yes. Not to mention my dad was in 9/10 pain with medications. My father has been in pain since his injury in January. Yet to find out after my father went to ER, primary care multiple times a MRI was ordered. MY father has SO MANY tears it is sad. He may need a total knee replacement. I first met with dr. Jeffrey Mann in October of 2011. I had been experiencing major foot pain for over two years. I had been seeing a podiatrist friend for those two years who was able to manage the pain somewhat with cortisone injections. The podiatrist had ordered an MRI in 2011 which revealed severe arthritis in two of my mid foot joints. He said this condition to treat was out of scope of expertise. My primary orthopedic doctor recommended Dr. Jeff Mann, he described Jeff Mann as a "rock star". I took his advice and met with Jeff and his PA Monica. He discussed my condition and described what he could do if I decided on a surgical option. I agree he is not warm and fuzzy, that is just his make-up. I wanted a surgeon who performed lots of surgeries. Being tired of 2years of pain, I opted for surgery. I made the right decision. On January 10th surgery was performed at the surgery center. He removed the affected joints and fused the bones and inserted screws. Post surgery went well. Cast and crutches for 6 weeks. A boot and crutches for another 3 weeks, then the boot and no crutches for 2 weeks and finally shoes. I must say, there was very,very little or no pain during my recovery . Prior to going back to work my wife and I went to the desert east of San Diego for 4 days of day hikes on uneven terrain. All went well. I'm back at work, on my feet and pain free. I couldn't be happier with the results. Remember don't let personality issues get in the way. read more

All of my other doctors said Dr. Mann was the doc to see for my lower leg/ankle pain. I understood from the outset that Dr. Mann is not "chatty," that he would not laugh at any attempt at humor, but that he was very good. Still, I was not quite ready for his one-word, non-negotiable diagnosis that signaled the end of my visit. He wouldn't even listen to me as I tried to tell him I could not wear the thing he prescribed for me to wear. It was over when he said it was over and that was all there was to it. I'm sure he is an excellent foot/lower leg doctor for some people. I trust the doctors that referred me to him - but I found that my diagnosis was different. I would have appreciated a chance to discuss my situation with him further. If you go to see him, be prepared and know what you are going to say from the get-go. Practice what you are going to say. Perhaps a good surgeon, but always requires waiting times well beyond a hour past the scheduled time. Also does not seem very interested in patient input regarding the condition or post-surgery recovery experience. May miss ancillary issues by focusing too much on the main injury. These are significant issues and ones with which most of the medical community has long since caught up. It would be beneficial if Dr Mann took the bedside manner comments to heart. If I could give no stars I would!!! I seriously wish I would have read these reviews before seeing him. I broke my leg in April 2013 and was sent to see Dr. Mann who performed surgery on me a few days later. After my surgery I never saw Dr. Mann again it was always his assistant. 5 months into the healing process I realized that there was still something wrong, pain, major swelling, my foot was completely numb very very limited range of motion. Eventually after complaining about what was going on and not being able to go back to work (Retail Manager) due to being on my feet all day this idiot has the nerve to tell me "You should look for a new job" I couldn't believe how cold hearted and uncaring he was never once did they look into my issues or pay me any mind it was almost like he was trying to push me out the door... Well I found a new doctor and guess what there were multiple things wrong with my leg and ankle now I'm looking at having another surgery to fix what this cold hearted uncaring doctor with little man syndrome screwed up!!! I'm 29 years old and I can't play with my kids at the park because I can't stand on my foot too long washing dishes is almost impossible no going to the mall or large department stores and to top it off I can't wear high heels!!! Dr. Mann's specialty is foot and ankle surgery. When I was 7 yrs old I fell off some concrete stairs (no handrail) and landed on an open can, nearly severing my left 4th and 5th toes. My parents were poor and took me to some horrible country doctor who did such a bad job my foot was deformed, the toes curled up and one sat on top of the other. I lived with this deformity all my life until 2 weeks ago. I am getting old and shoes were starting to bother me alot more than they used to so I decided to have the defect repaired. I dreaded it, as I've always had to pamper that foot and didn't like the idea of anyone touching it, much less performing surgery on it. After consulting with a few doctors, I decided to go with Dr. Mann and I am very pleased with the outcome so far. I had my stiches removed today and can already see how good the results are going to be. The incisions he made were kept as small as possible, and in such a way that when they heal they will hardly be noticeable. I held it up next to my healthy foot and can see that once it heals completely, the results are going to be extraordinary. He is gentle, informative, congenial and professional. I felt I could trust him right away. His staff is courteous and considerate. I have not had to wait for more than 15 minutes for any appointment. Only complaint I have is that if you leave a message, it takes them a few hours to call you back. The receptionist is kind of slow returning messages. I wil update this post in a month or so, but my experience thusfar has been extremely satisfactory and I could not be more pleased. Great surgeon! read more

I took my 91-y-o mother to see Dr. Mann at the Grand Ave. office (Oakland Bone & Joint Specialists) for a follow-up visit after she suffered some foot injuries from a fall. Her initial visit in Aug. was with the P.A. which went fine. This follow up visit with Dr. Mann is completely disappointing. We sat in the waiting room for 50 minutes before being called in by an assistant. During the 50-minute wait, only one other patient got called in. Other than that, the place had no action that was visible to us. So it's not like they had many patients being seen inside the clinic. When my mother finally got called in, she was asked to get a new set of x-rays done - which was expected. When I asked the technician how much longer before we would see the doctor, he said he had no idea. When told we had already waited 50 minutes, he said, "well, that's nothing." Excuse me, but any doctor's office that could tell you that a 50-minute wait is "nothing" is not ethical. These are patients they are dealing with - NOT animals. We then were asked to go back to the exam room, and we waited another 20 minutes before the doctor showed up. No words like, "Sorry for the wait" or anything of that nature. He had reviewed the x-rays, then told us that her bones are healing well, and she no longer needs to wear that funny looking shoe. Then he proceeded to leave. All 3 minutes of his time - after over an hour of waiting. That's it. We will try our hardest not to have to go back. Waste of time! read more

When I moved to the bay area, I needed a new doctor and made the unfortunate mistake of selecting this guy. He's awful. When I told him the kind of surgery I had he literally picked up my foot, moved it around a bit, then asked "well, where was the surgery site?" You've got to be kidding me! My surgery was NOT an uncommon one. I complained that I was still experiencing pain, but not around the surgery site. He couldn't have cared less, answered 25% of my questions then sent me on my way with a $2 insert. Yeah....thanks.....like I haven't tried that already. Worst experience with an MD in my life! I think I have a stress fracture in my foot, but Dr. Mann didn't even bother reading the MRI results to me, let alone explain what they meant. Looked at my foot from across the room and told me to wear a walking boot. Thanks, that was the advice I got from my primary care physician three months earlier. When I needed my broken ankle operated on because I still couldn't walk a year after I broke it, I wanted an expert orthopedist. My first orthopedic Dr. set it, sent me to phys therapy, then gave up and sent me to a non surgical foot doctor when I kept complaining about a severe limp. After 9 months I spent 2 more months finding the right doctor. Expert is what I got. He specializes in foot/ankle. He was central in bringing the Swedish artificial ankle to the US. He put in 3 screws to fixed my ankle and recommended a take home nerve block for first 4 to 7 days after surgery so I had NO pain and suffer no nausea or brain damage from narcotics. I don't mind occasional long waits and I don't need a touchy feel bedside manner as long as the job is done RIGHT! Occasionally he has to work too hard for some of the niceties. I recommend Dr. J. Mann to anyone who wants their orthopedic problem taken care of right the first time. He is as good as it gets. Also, my scars are all but invisible after 4 months! read more

So, I'm about a week post-op after a mid-foot dislocation and a fractured navicular bone. I was referred to him after an ER doctor and a podiatrist were "unsure" as to whether or not I had a fractured anything, so they referred me to Dr. Mann who is a foot-and-ankle specialist. Honestly, everything prior to Dr. Mann's office was complicated, from talking back and forth to my school and their insurance, to the other doctors who let me go on a broken foot for about a week. It was on a Tuesday that I called because on Monday it was a holiday, and literally less than an hour later the office called me to come in immediately because Dr. Mann needed to see me right away. I was on my way to work when I had to tell my Uber driver to make a quick turn because it was very unexpected, and as soon as I arrived the staff was extremely courteous and welcoming to me. I almost burst into tears with how kind Ann and Anita (receptionists?) treated me over the phone and even came to greet me and told me Dr. Mann would be with me shortly. About 30 minutes later Dr. Mann showed up and calmly explained to me that I needed surgery and he had me scheduled to be his first patient that same Friday. I looked at him a bit confused and scared, so he went to go grab a model skeleton foot and showed me exactly what had occurred and what he was going to do. My friend was with me and he answered both of our questions as best as he could. Fast forward to Friday and though the operation was at 7am, he came in at 7:03 to my bedside and touched me gently on the shoulder and reassured me everything would be okay and that he had just spoken to my friends downstairs. He joked about giving me his autograph and signed my foot with his name, then went on his way to surgery. His staff was extremely patient with me even though I had a mini-freak out right before anesthesia. Haven't seen him since, but I hope everything is going well. When I have questions he has been responsive via his assistants. I'm more frustrated with my current life and homing situation, but definitely not with the care and respect Dr. Mann's office offered me. I will update this as I go along my recovery. Also, as a side note... Percocet slows down your digestive tract. Wish I would've been told that, but other than that, it's all good. read more

I came to Dr. Mann with a ruptured achilles tendon. I got a same-day appointment and waited less than 15 minutes. He squeezed me into his surgery schedule only days after my visit. While it might be true that he is not the ideal person if you need an emotional trashcan and I can see how some might perceive him as distant, Dr. Mann explained the procedure well and repeatedly asked me if I had any further questions. And now for the most important part: From what I can tell, he is a fantastic surgeon. For my surgery, he used the very new PARS system, which allows the surgeon to do his thing with minimal damage to the tissue and a very small incision. If its relevant to you, compare scars from regular achilles surgery to PARS surgery scars. I am going through a light speed recovery right now and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that Dr. Mann is a specialist who is on top of his game. He seems to have adopted the new technique instantly and I get to reap the rewards. So again, if you have the expectation that your surgeon should be the most empathetic person on the planet, then Dr. Mann might not be right for you. But if you are looking for a skilled surgeon, then look no further. One could deduct half a star for the fact that I neither saw him before the anesthetist knocked me out nor after the nurse woke me up, but then again, I'd rather have him go on and perform the next great surgery than having him standing on the side of my bed watching me sleep. read more
