Overall experience well organized organization run by friendly, professional, knowledgeable medical personnel. A modest parking lot that gets filled early. Entrance managed by security system and admission must be buzzed in. Registration can get busy easily and quickly with patients coming in and phone calls managed by a single person. The lobby - waiting room appears large to accommodate many patients and their family. A large screen tv broadcasting a home improvement program. Varies patients viewing their smart devices. My name is called and a nurse brings me back to the check in area where instructions and gown are provided. A hand over to check in nurse who inquire on medications and ride home. The procedure doctor drops by to give additional information regarding the procedure, answers to questions. Next a the procedure nurse follows to take me back to procedure room where I would meet the assisting nurses. The area as with the entire center is kept relatively cool. After the procedure, I'm moved onto another gurney for the recovery area. A pain management nurse to hand over to check in before releasing me. After 15 minutes or so, I'm getting dressed to be released. The nurse walks me to my car parked in the adjacent lot. Again, a well organized process managed by pleasant and conscientious medical team. Should another Surgerial procedure is needed, I wouldn't hesitate have it here. read more

Its such an unfortunate that many doctors are so uneducated these days! I went into the emergency from unusual period pain (I throw up twice) and I couldn't take any painkillers! I was seen by this guy doctor seems like the head of others and he just examined my stomach with putting some pressure and did a simple sonography! Then he excused me and said its just a period pain! He went home and I kept experiencing the same pain again! I met with another doctor and I find out I have endometriosis! I think doctors need to update their knowledge or if they don't know just simply send the patient to some other doctor ! Its a shame for a head doctor ! Endometriosis can kill someone if not stopped or treated ! I find this very ignorant specially for someone who approaches the ER!! read more

Took my friend here today for arm surgery with Dr. Warren. The front staff was very nice, they had a table area for me to "work from home"with free wifi access. It also had a good size tv so I watched a little bit of House Hunters. Overall it was clean, the bathrooms were clean too. Also, the security guard lady was extremely nice, she made sure I got a parking spot right up front! read more

I'm sure you're familiar with this situation: You schedule an appointment for out-patient surgery. You fast before the procedure. The surgery goes smoothly, and then soon you're discharged. Suddenly you experience a deep hankering for a classic smoked salmon bagel sandwich. What's a patient to do? If you're at Sutter Health Surgery Center, you're in great shape! You can cross Telegraph, preferably waving your crutches and stopping traffic, and waltz right in to Beauty's Bagels. You'll have the sandwich of your dreams. Sweet, eh? Well, there's more--this place is great as a surgery center. I've experienced it both as a patient (for a big toe procedure whose details might spoil your appetite for bagels) and as a companion who assisted a patient at drop-off and pickup. In both situations, I saw with my own eyes the loving care that the personnel bestow on their charges. The waiting room is comfortable, as is the pre-op and post-op areas. The operating room that housed me seemed first-rate to me, at least until the anesthesia set in. The doctors who use this facility appear to be a fine bunch. Choose your surgeon carefully because one's mileage may vary. read more

Dropped a patient off today and discovered there would be a 1-2 hour delay upon entering. As the delay was scheduled in hours, not minutes, I called to inquire about pick up 1 hour post drop off. Alyssa advised the pick up time would be approximately 2 hours after I called as they had not started the procedure. 15 minutes later I get a call advising that the patient would be ready in 10 minutes! Leave the grocery store, race to the surgery center and inquire why Alyssa misinformed me by more than an hour without calling. She played mute and refused to respond until I repeated the question?! So, no they will not call you 20 minutes before your loved one is finished and be prepared to receive erroneous information if you call for a status from Alyssa. read more

Staff made me aware of the whole process and I felt at ease going thru my surgery. They followed up after and answered any detailed questions I had or quelled any things I was worried about. Kudos to every nurse there that made me feel welcome and more relaxed. read more

The in-take people are really good and the mural is on it. But recovery is a joke and the paperwork they give you with numbers to call in case of complications ring off the hook or go to phones of ordinary folk, not doctors. What a wonderful experience I had here! The staff are all friendly and very helpful. From the first reception person to the nursing staff and anesthesiologist, as well as the surgeon, everyone was great. The waiting areas are comfortable and they give you warm blankets once you are in your gown and cute socks. Follow up call the next day answered my questions and put me at ease. Don't hesitate to have a surgery here, even during Covid 19. Just had a surgery done and I felt confident having it done here. It was clean and everyone had masks and were kept apart. I was quickly called to Pre-op less than a ten minute wait. The Pre-op nurse was an issue as it seemed he did not follow the same system as the other nurses in that area, like making me remove all clothing for an ear operation. Others in the room were allowed to keep underclothes on. Plus he took the easy way out and put the IV in my hand instead of my arm, even when I told him I preferred the arm because of less pain. He told me he could see the vein in my hand so he would use that. And then he pressed real hard on it while it was inserted, that was very painful. All the other nurses were great and very accommodating, telling me what was going to happen ahead of time. I was kept comfortable. I was a bit surprised I was out so fast when it was all done but I was awake and fine. The last nurse I saw gave me a narcotic pill for pain and I told her I had no pain. She said you will later and pushed me to take it. Right after that, my doctor came in and said no narcotics, use Tylenol. The nurse did not even tell him she gave me that one pill. I think the nurse should have checked with the doctor first before doing what they think is right. The good thing was, the Oxy she gave me did nothing. I had discomfort and soreness but never got any pain. I was super impressed with the Anesthesiologist, she really spent time talking to me every step of the way. The doctor was fantastic and I am happy he works out of this Surgery Center. Overall, my experience was great and I would not hesitate to come back. read more

Nestled against a blacktop parking lot adjacent to the Telegraph Avenue exit of the MacArthur BART station, you just might miss the Alta Bates Surgery Center if you aren't paying attention. A low, unassuming brick building, as you enter, the first thing you notice is the distinctly un-waiting room like sofas, arm chairs, easy chairs, ottomans and padded window seat. It's furnished a bit like several Pottery Barn in-store displays packed in together - in a good way! The receptionist was with a patient but greeted me and told me she'd be with me quickly. The nurses were fantastic - friendly & conversational, professional & efficient. The pre-op changing room was pretty comfortable - though the lights were a bit bright, and everyone there was just so nice. My post-op was very short - and I was up and off to my own home, 1 mile away - to recuperate. My anaesthesiologist was also a really nice guy who easily established rapport & provided information in a respectful, collaborative way. read more

I am writing this review to express how impressive the surgery dept is . I just had a knee replacement and am blown away how nice the staff is . A 1 to 10 is not good enough. The staff is so kind and professional and will do anything to help .They function as a very Smooth cohesive unit with always a smile on their faces they are just the best the food was great there's actually nothing I could pick a part at this hospital I hope that anybody who is considering going to Sutter Goes there . Life should not be punctuated by surgery, but sadly, sometimes it is. And to those whom have endured multiple episodes, my infinite compassion goes out to you. I've only had surgery 1 other time in my life - a tonsillectomy at aged 19. By that age, your anatomy is fully developed and the procedure takes place just millimeters from the carotid artery. So it is considered major surgery. And it landed me in the hospital for 3 days. My last surgery took place in my impoverished hometown of Greenwich CT....during the dark ages of sodium pentathol, nurses with hats, pagers.....and leeches. But my 1st surgery prepared me for the wee dark hours of anticipation and moreover what to expect when going under the knife for my knee reconstruction last week. With Foo Fighters cranked at max volume at 5:45 AM; and on a morbidly empty stomach, I sat waiting in the hotel-like lobby of The Surgery Center' awaiting the procedure. I was strangely calm, even glib; and no drugs were yet coursing through my veins... The Surgery Center is an Ambulatory (outpatient) surgery facility; and an extension of Alta Bates Medical Center. It's just down by the intersection of MacArthur and Telegraph; and as another Yelper said, it's VERY easy to miss this non-descript brick building. Especially at 5:30 in the morning. I was their first victim of the day ;), and arrived to a quiet, empty lobby very much resembling a Courtyard Marriott, yet without the coffee, cheapo DIY waffles and stale muffins. Intake was quick as they had already collected most of my information beforehand. Then I signed about 5 different forms that mentioned death and advanced directive no less than 20 times. Then the magic began. I was whisked up by a kindly Nurse Nancy who took all of my vitals, and took me to a private room (like a teeny hotel room) where she went over everything and asked if I had questions. They she gave me my gowns, TED stockings, and tagged me. Then Doctor Woo, my Anethesiologist swooped in, and perfunctorily reviewed my chart, went over the meds, and the process. Again, I had studied beforehand, so she kindly confirmed the stages and the drugs...clearly perked by this anal retentive patient who seemed to know about all of the stuff without being told. Doctor Woo was about my age, had on striking dark blue metalflake nail polish and cute clogs, so I sheepishly admit going into flirt mode with her....who knows...maybe these are my last minutes on earth, so why not. Then Nurse Nancy came back and guided me back through a series of doors that rendered the place like the Tardis of Doctor Who...each area seemingly much larger and busier than the building seemed to be. Back to OR room 6. It was prepped and ready for me. Doctor Woo was already there, in rather cute scrubs; ready to whack me. She dropped a line in me; almost painless; pumped in 4 CC of Fentanyl, and the room started spinning. Ahh, Doc Woo. Thank you. Just before I slipped under, Doctor Eppley, my Surgeon magically appeared in my field of vision, patted my chest and said "we'll take good care of you". Then I woke up to Nurse Winnie standing my me, asking me if I was in pain, and what level. "Behind my knee..." about a 9" More Fentanyl. This happened a couple of more times, with me bestowing compliments and flattery on all of the nurses the entire time (I'm a very loving happy drunk)... Finally they said "Max we've got to kick you out honey". Wheelchair appeared...wheeled out to the car...whisked home, but not without stopping at Chipotle first (its all that seemed open) for a massive Barbacoa Beef Burrito. Ahhh. Nothing like chowing a big juicy beef burrito when totally high on precrip meds. The Surgery Center did a tremendous job. Doc Woo, Nurse Nancy, Winnie, Laura and all of the staff were like angels. I really am sad to give three stars on this. Everyone was wonderful and friendly on both of my surgeries except for one issue I had. When someone has been awake for 30minutes from anestesia the last thing the staff should do is make a smartass remark. I woke up, took a bit to really get my body going again, and a nurse brought my clothes so I could change. After I changed I moved the curtains and stepped out. That nurse was fine to be shocked or whatever and say "what did I say?" In a semi-joking manner. Maybe I missed something afterall. Hearing "Yeah i took care of him last time. He doesn't listen well." is absurd. I would leave a comment card but there were none. So I'll use social media instead. I can go to other places for proceedures. I would prefer not to discount the other amazing staff because of one comment but if I had said "fuck off" I'm sure they would think the same of me. read more

I wish I could give more stars to this place, because they were prompt and efficient when I was being processed in, and the place is very attractive, clean and so on. But the anesthesiologist had attitude, was snotty and arrogant, didn't want to answer my informed questions about Propofol, and this was before M. Jackson's death so it wasn't that media hype affected me or anything. In after care the nurse was terrible - I was supposed to be out in two hours, but she left me for three hours virtually unattended, and made jokes about me that I could hear after I woke up, to the effect that they should ignore me because 'I had started talking before I woke up and wouldn't remember anything.' The truth was, I asked a question right after I woke up about my daughter in the waiting room, which she ignored, so that I had to ask the secretary nearby the same question, which she answered. The nurse never knew anyone had helped me, and she herself proceeded to call to me once in awhile to tell me again 'I would just have to wait.' The extra time I was there resulted in super swelling that caused the bandage to be too tight, and that caused bleeding, which caused complications. Thanks a lot Surgery Center. read more

If you have to have surgery, or wait for a loved one to get a procedure, this place has a pretty comfortable waiting room and free Wifi. I brought my laptop and my iPhone and was sufficiently occupied doing a little work, answering emails, and listening to music while I waited. When your loved one is ready for you to go back, they call you by name, a nice touch. The only thing about the 4 stars instead of 5 is that the Wifi did flake out on me at 2 points and I was unable to deploy my perfectly crafted and thoroughly tested Vertical Response email. The network came back but then failed again so I had to ask a colleague to execute the final step for me back at the office while I turned to my iPhone and listened to my iTunes for awhile waiting for my named to be called. read more

My doc - Dr. Masem (btw - if you ever have any hand/arm issues - he is the doc to see) performed surgery quickly and I have to say 2nd day I was off pain meds and feel like I'm already healing (5 days in). Hand is itching and desperate to get this cast-like contraption off my hand. Anesthesiologist - Dr. Armbruster - ask for him - painless and actually pleasureable! I got two surgeries done at the Surgery Center. I am VERY impressed with this facility. When you walk into the reception area, it's like walking into a cozy living room. The decor is very comforting and cozy - lots of couches and overstuffed arm chairs, coffee tables, magazines, a big TV screen, etc. Its a great place for family to wait while you get your surgery. The nurses and staff are calm, helpful and really nice. Everyone makes sure that you feel comfortable, safe and prepared for surgery, which is usually a pretty scary experience. Post-op nurses are great, both times my post-op nurse was right by my side when I woke up from anesthesia, and was quick to give me fentanyl when I complained about the pain I felt. They called my family member to come pick me up after I was ready to go home, and helped me get dressed. I felt cared for, safe and comfortable. I really like the surgery center. I hope I don't have to get any more surgeries, but if I do, I'll definitely be coming back here. Didn't have any problems with insurance/billing either. Was all a very smooth process with clear communication. Very satisfied! read more

The Surgery Center for Alta Bates has left me laid up for a week while my wrist gets used to having a pin holding it together, pecking out reviews with one hand. But they made my surgery about as seamless as I could expect. They have a big comfy waiting room with HDTV and good magazines and a quick check-in process. Then they moved me to my own little living room where J and I curled up and watched -24 Hour Party People- on VH1 until the anesthesiologist was ready to knock me out. The whole thing necessarily sucked, but when I come to a place like this, I'm reminded to be thankful for my good health insurance -- I wish everyone had it. (And the intake nurse really made my day when she told who told me my fiance was a "score" :)) read more

I've been lucky enough to spend some quality time at the surgery center on 4 separate occasions over the last couple of years. First, about 2 years ago, I had an infected salivary gland removed, then in October of last year I had a benign tumor removed from my thumb (apparently I am prone to odd growths). Most recently, I've had a couple epidural injections for back pain caused by some damaged discs. While I wouldn't exactly say I've *enjoyed* my time at the Surgery Center (what with the pain and all), but they've always been efficent, pleasant, and proffessional. They've always been on time, and as Sharon mentions, they have a comfy waiting room with TV as well as pretty comfortable surgery rooms and a decent recovery room. 5 stars for doing their job as well as it can be done. read more

I hate giving negative reviews so early, but I had surgery here yesterday. Great patients service but once you leave they do not to care. A nurse called me this morning and I was sleep my pain is unbearable so when I woke up called back. I was able to speak to someone who said the discharge nurse was busy and asked to leave my name and number it is now 10pm and no call from them. I know I can reach out to my surgeon directly but I wanted to ask questions about my nerve block in which the anesthesiologist works for the center and I could not find my answers in my patient discharge paper work. As a Sutter patient for the last 10 years I've never had to deal with no one calling me back not even for the smallest of questions. I'm upset with their follow up care and I will be making a formal complaint. Some advice make sure you answer and are not sleep after surgery the next day so you can actually talk to someone here otherwise good luck. read more

I had a very comfortable and good experience here at the Surgery Center. I went in for cortisone shots in my spine and I was surprised at how fast everything went...the waiting area is very comfortable, and very welcome since I got there at 6am in the morning and needed to snooze again...I couldn't give 5 stars because though I was the first patient to arrive, my nurse and doctor were late...the recovery room staff were very attentive and nice, and I was out within 2 hours of my procedure. FYI: if you are arriving in the wee morning hours like I did, you may have to do a double take because the place looks like it's closed or like a house with night light on...lol... read more

This review is specifically about why the Surgery Center is unable to provide proof of payment for the anesthesiologist for my surgery on July 13, 2015. It shouldn't be up to me to do search for him when I paid at the Surgery Center, and especially since he seems to have disappeared. I've been given names and numbers, but none are accurate. All I need is proof of payment, which I would think the Surgery Center would have since that's who I paid, but no one has it. Why not? This may be minor to them, but is a lot for me. My SSI income is less than $900 a month, but I was required to pay in full before surgery to the Surgery Center (which I thought included the anesthiologist and surgeon.) I shattered my wrist on May 31 and had terrible, abusive treatment and then bad surgery at Highland Hospital, so finally got a second and third opinion and then surgery at the Surgery Center on July 13. The $13,000 I finally paid is more than a year's income for me, but I have a chance for reimbursement from Medicare, if I can provide proof of payment, which I do have from the Center and surgeon. The surgery itself went well, though the recommendation for a nerve block was horrific, with a dead arm I worried would be damaged because of lack of sensation. That was not adequately described to me by the anesthesiologist or I would have refused it. read more

was plan to write a 5 stars reviews, front desk staff was professional, friendly but facilities was functioning in old fashion with no board indicated surgery status, so after the front desk off duty, we were basically just waited there alone, finally surgeon came out, to make sure we get the post op pain meds, since it's late in the day, our RX was sent to cvs near my boy's place, but he's going to my house tonight, Dr. told us he'll change RX to the new cvs, at the discharge, Nurse told us she confirmed with the 1st pharmacy & our RX is there, since they opens 24 hrs we ok to pick up our Rx there, we got in at 7:59 pm, we were told they closed also they never open 24 hours, they have the meds, but doctor had called cancelled it. can't call the Doctor either, that night we were running around between 2 cvs for hrs, long story short, went home very very disappointed without post op pain meds. truly feels what happened to us was not acceptable. read more

Miserable RN. I was in significant pain after the cervical steroid epidural. First she lied and said the doctor was "gone", so I was just going to have to deal with the pain. She called my husband, (with a very snooty attitude according to him), and told him he better hurry because I was in a lot of pain and that I "forgot my pain meds". First off, I was never told I had to provide my own pain control. Second, the doctor was NOT gone, he was in another procedure. Thanks to ANOTHER nurse, the one supposedly taking care of me had to get off her lazy butt and do the "extra" work of taking care of her patient. Very frustrating!! A rotten apple really CAN spoil the bunch. Everything else about my experience was perfect, but because this woman made me feel so bad about being in pain, and clearly putting her out by it, I will never recommend The Surgery Center. read more

Waiting area is set up for pre-op patients, not post-op... no flat places to lie down (knee surgery... keep the leg elevated... hello?). My friend the patient whom I picked up said flatly, "That waiting room sucks." That day were three of them, none properly supported. Let's hope somebody reads these reviews and fixes it. read more

I went to the surgery center with my husband yesterday, who had to have his thumb pinned back together (ick) after a bad break, and the people at the surgery center were AMAZING. The waiting room has big squishy comfortable sofas and chairs, and I was actually able to nap while he was in surgery. No awful plastic chairs here! Christa, the receptionist, was the nicest and most helpful medical receptionist I've ever encountered, smiling warmly and answering my questions even though she was clearly busy and the phones were ringing a lot. She made us feel like we were checking in for a cruise, not a surgery. The nurses were incredibly kind, and the intake nurse Joyce made us feel completely at ease. Nobody talked down to us or treated us like they were doing us a huge favor by being there--everyone was respectful, warm, and helpful. If you have to have surgery, this is the place to do it. read more

I just had ACL reconstructive surgery here, and it was a very positive experience. From the moment we arrived at 5:59AM, to the time I left 5 1/2 hours later, the staff was amazingly efficient, attentive, and pleasant. Granted, I was asleep for 3 of those hours in surgery and recovery, but, my conscious time was incredibly relaxing. The waiting room is comfortable and spacious, the changing room had Direct TV and a room enough for consultation with my nurse and anesthesiologist, and, eventually, my doctor. Everyone was so nice, so accommodating, and they explained everything well. No complications, they followed up with me the next day to make sure I was okay, and, God, forbid, if I have to have some kind of surgery again, I would ask to go back here. read more

Very impressed with the professionalism and care of this surgery center. This place is far and above the other surgery centers in the area. Patient is given a small, yet private consultation room to go over items with the nurses and attending doctors, the staff are well trained, friendly, and helpful, and after a procedure the patient may recline fully as opposed to sitting in a chair like at other centers. Definitely recommend this place for any outpatient surgeries or injections. read more

I am pretty happy with my experience in there. The pre-op staff made me feel comfortable and I walked into the or with confidence. The recovery nurse did her best to make me comfortable, including setting up a foot massager and a bed heater. But she was a little slow with the fentanyl, it took 3 shots upon requests after I woke up to get reasonably comfortable and I was shivering in pain for a few minutes, to the dismay of my wife. I think the nurse did her best and I would chalk this up on the DEA who makes it a pain in the arse to provide proper painkillers in proper doses when needed. read more

"Any minute they will invite you back" that is what they said 3/4 hour ago, repeated 30 minutes ago and just now for a third time. My family member/friend asked that I accompany him into prep for Surgery. Still not permitted and still no explanation. "any minute now" This began at 0800 on 6 June. I have been in this center only twice. Last time I was permitted to accompany family. They are prompt in filling the waiting room with those who are waiting for those who promptly produced proof of insurance and signed all the forms. Once admitted at 0900 I learned that the nurse could not complete the pre op interview until just before admitted. Not sure why I was not included, would seem like a good idea to have family participate in case patient is confused etc. Patient had questions for surgeon and nurse. Good attention. patient welcomed my conversation as a distraction. AT 9:15 taken into the procedure room. Assured me I will be inbited in during recovery period post op. More later read more
