This place was the rudest! We came in with a party of 8 willing to sit at 1 table or 2 bc of Covid. They told us when we got there that tables were leaving and we had to wait 5 minutes while there is 1 guy sitting at an 8 top. What sense does that make? Then they send a teenage worker over to tell us management said they cannot seat us bc they are at capacity which was not true! Nepenthe just opened up in Baltimore near Hampden in the Clipper Mill complex. I got equipment and ingredients from Nepenthe today to make my first beer. They had everything I needed and much more. Their staff were extremely knowledgeable about beer making and walked me through the process and worked with me to create a good recipe. It was extremely helpful to get recommendations about different types of hops and yeast. Their store looks great too. Highly recommended. read more

I feel like this is the kind of place you'd take your parents when they are visiting or maybe you'd meet up with your ultimate frisbee team after a session in the park. The beer was solid and delicious. Creative and thoughtful. The food was a little hit or miss. The wings were delicious and probably all I'll order in the future. The pickles are very lightly picked. Do not get the cheesesteak. The steak itself was pretty delicious, but the bun was lack luster, the cheese sauce really didn't have any flavor, and the onions/peppers kind of just taste like wet veggies. None of the caramelized grilled goodness you're hoping for. The whole thing could have used a dash of salt. read more

Just started home brewing and came to Nepenthe for the first time. Brian was very helpful. We told him what hops we wanted to use and the flavor profile we hoped to achieve. Hands down, the environment in Nepenthe​ is ELECTRIC. They have some of the better sour beers in the Baltimore area and if you're looking to try different brews without going over-board, their staff is friendly enough to help you decide. Although their food looks amazing when it comes out from the kitchen, the taste leaves a little to be desired. Everything is OK at best. Very clean. Very helpful. Full of the things you're looking for, when making wines and beers. The best part? There's at least one adorable dog that's present each time I come here. The Korean Cheesesteak still has me craving it - and it's been 6 weeks since I visited Baltimore. Beers were good and it was a great atmosphere. I really hate writing a review about a place where I haven't purchased anything, but I accidentally wondered in here today thinking that it might be a bar with a wide array of microbrew options. This place is really a store to purchase equipment to make your own beer and wine. They appear to have a huge selection of everything you need and will even provide lessons on how to start up this particular hobby. My boyfriend and I stopped by Nepenthe today for a quick lunch. I had only been once before and forgot how awesome the atmosphere is! I tried the Beebweepa and the Polydribbles and both were phenomenal. We also got wings, brussels, and fries, all of which were great. I highly recommend getting the sauce flight with the fries. Worst customer service ever and mediocre food. We ordered a burger, shroomsteak, vodka soda and a beer and sat for our order. My Dad recognized the Head Chef off the clock and offered to buy her a beer. Tips the bartender for a second time. After chitchatting for a bit, my Dad's shroomsteak arrived but no burger. Shroomsteak had barely any cheese and wasn't mixed together well. My Dad was done with his meal when my burger had yet to arrive. He turns to the chef working and asks "hey is a burger coming?" To which he replied "it's coming." No apology for the late food. But finally I received my dry burger with no sauce on it or sides. A few minutes later, the Head Chef comes over and tells us to not yell at her staff. We are very confused as my Dad didn't yell at anyone and we felt totally blindsided as she starts to scold us and cause a scene. After spending $60 on a meal including buying the head chef a drink she screams at us in public!? The Head Chef says my Dad should apologize to him or buy him a beer. So my Dad decided to be the bigger person and offers to buy him a beer. The chef picks an $11 drink to which my Dad says "Get the fuck out of here!" We left without even finishing our drinks and will never return again. Their loss!! We're locals and will tell everyone how rude the staff is here. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Typically, when somewhere first opens, I do NOT go for at least a few months to give them a chance to get their act together. Having said that, my first visit here was only a couple of days after they opened and instantly I was impressed. I've been back a few times and had the same quality of experience. The bartenders here are helpful and friendly, not overly friendly like in a fake sort of way but they are happy you came in. The food, my my, the food is so good. I've had their chicken sandwich at least 3 times because it's amazingly crispy and flavorful and I cannot believe it's being served to me at a brewery and not a 5 star restaurant (except for the plate, because that is a total give away that it's a brewery). The garage fries are delicious and flavorful and somehow manage to stay crispy even with all the stuff on top. I've had only a very few 4 oz pours that I wasn't a fan of over my several visits but mostly I love the variety this place offers. There is truly something for everyone. Also the tables are nice and large mostly (there are a few standard size tables) but it makes it really easy to chat with your neighbor/sit by a stranger and make new friends. I will return to this place, again and again, and with all the breweries in this town, is know it's hard to choose but make this a regular stop, you won't be disappointed. read more

The best beer ever, and I am a self proclaimed beer snob. If you're a hop head and IPA lover then this place is for you. The space jellyfish and the dubabeepweepa are bomb. Just get a 4 pack to go and try it for yourself it's amazing. If you're getting food (all of it is amazing!) get the fries and order all of the sauces (made in house and there are like 12 of them). My first trip was fine -- the lining up to order food and drinks to me seems kind of iffy during covid. Makes people move around a lot more as opposed to one server coming to your table. Second trip same thing and quite annoying when the greeter comes to your table to ask how things are going and you can't ask for another beer. Also it took about 7 minutes to get a requested ketchup for fries (that were part of the fish and chips), it felt when we asked for it that it was an imposition. Love this place!! Opened a few weeks ago and I've already been several times, each time has been great. Was so excited for it to open and it has not disappointed. I love tropical sour IPAs (it's 2019) and they have a huge selection on tap which is awesome. I'm also OBSESSED with their disco fries I crave them all the time. My only complaint was sitting at one of the two-tops at the back, the tables were so long that I felt like I was a mile away from my spouse. If they were turned the other way it'd be perfect! I had no idea that this place existed in all of my years in Baltimore. It is a cute little establishment tucked away in an old warehouse in northern Baltimore. I always have a happy experience going to this area of Baltimore as my dance classes are located in the back of the warehouse. This is a great option for a fun weekend activity with friends. They slowly guide you through the intricacies on how to make a good beer. Good for beginners and for advanced beer makers. I happened to be a beginner and the staff took the time to really make sure everyone was able to partake in the brewing and that everyone's questions were answered. Homebrew stores always seem, to me, to be cramped / dusty / unwelcoming, but it's clear the owners have a very unique / hip style which they've brought into the design and flow of the store. I kicked off my New Years resolution to learn Homebrewing today with a Brew-on-Premises session. The folks at Nepenthe were super nice, answered all my questions, and got me very excited to come back in two weeks to bottle my beer and take it home! While the nepenthe equipment is nice and sized for bigger batches than what I'll have at home, it's still homebrew rather than pro tools so i did in fact learn all the things I'm going to need to learn to do this on my own through the year. They let you pick your style of Ale and have all the ingredients ready to go and equipment cleaned and sanitized before you get there. I learn by seeing and doing, so this has definitely taken some of the doubt out of my mind after reading beer making instructions from books etc. Very cool place. read more

Excellent homebrew store, with a good stock of ingredients and supplies that are well laid out in a spacious and uncluttered space. I visited for the first time recently to buy some beverage tubing for my kegerator, and came away a fan. Odd concept bar. My server was some guy named "Carolyn," that spells his name in some way too cutesy hipster way. He's supposed to be like the third best employee in the joint, but it still took me six weeks to get my drink. I had to make it myself in large vats in the back kitchen. (Kinda cool if you're into that sort of thing.) Up the upside, the food is free. But it's only little bags of pretzels like you're flying coach or something. 10/10 would drink here again. Nope. Go for the beer, leave for the food. Great service -- mostly nice engaging service but man the food is bland. I hope they buy some salt and pepper for guests, they had to specially prep a pair of cups on request like a rare spice. Very much needed to add any flavor than oil to the disco fries with "onion" gravy and "beer cheese", a floury yellow paste, with 1 cup of canned cheese powder per gallon batch I'm guessing. Harsh, I know, but unless you love the hearty flavor of vegetable oil on a massive tray of thick cut potatoes you'll need to pay 50 cent for some ketchup. Salt and pepper were graciously free. (They charge .50 per dollop of the vast array of 5 sauces ranging from ranch to a porcini aioli???) In fact, to move toward the positive, I highly recommend ketchup, worth every penny. Hard pass on the bacon add-on, not worth the dollar up charge in quantity or taste. Meanwhile, they could properly cook some tasty bacon, add a 1/3 cup chopped and by a stretch call it pork belly for 4 dollars. Nice space, appreciate the multiple bathrooms. Stopped in with 3 year old to try and assemble a unique brew-kit for my brother in law. These folks are awesome! They wrote me a recipe for a not exactly standard beer, they filled the recipe ingredient list for me (letting my 3 year old "help"), were so friendly and awesome. I have no doubt this will end up a great gift and a great beer. It's not easy to find - but worth the extra challenge. I've been a homebrewer for a few years, but always ordered my supplies online. When I heard about a local store selling home brewing supplies, I decided it was worth checking out. I was right. The store is a little off the beaten path (in fact, my gps wasn't sure where it was), but once I found it, I was impressed. The owners are very knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. There is a wide selection of supplies, even an entire wall of grains. It feels something like a candy store for homebrewers. Highly recommended. read more

While I haven't yet to brew at Nepenthe I have done BOP in Boulder, CO. It really is the best of both worlds. You get to do the brewing (and learning) yourself, all the while someone is there to advise and help out if you get stuck. Plus everything is cleaned (and sanitized) for you. The sanitized part is key or it can ruin your beer in fermentation. An unexpected bonus to BOP is when bottling comes around. If you are fortunate enough to bottle while others are bottling their beer you can do some trading and sample other beers for future brewing ideas. So glad that this is open in B'more!
