We celebrated a family visit by going to Nello's Place. It was a big disappointment. First of all, the person who seated us was curt and acted annoyed because one of our party was not able to join us. The restaurant was so dimly lit, a cell phone flashlight had to be used to read the menu. Noise level was moderately high. The bread, antipasto, calamari appetizer, and salad were okay, but we waited a very long time for our entrees. Sadly, the wait wasn't worth it as the veal scaloppine was so spicy, the diner could not eat it. The fettuccine alfredo with shrimp was clumped together. It made it unappetizing as well as difficult to eat. The diner only ate the shrimp. The chicken piccata was tasty, but the portion seemed skimpy. The broccoli in the sauteed vegetables was so spicy, we didn't eat it. In addition, the wine was $20.00 a glass. With this experience and the high-end prices, Nello's should be avoided. read more

6:20 on a Thursday and there was one parking place left in the lot. Good sign. Upon entering the dining room ours eye had not adjusted to the dim interior. Did notice the table cloths and electric candles on the table. Waiters were attired in black trousers and bow ties. We were promptly seated and drink orders taken. A small antipasto dish and bread were delivered. Early bird special and extensive menu selections. Party of four and all enjoyed the presentation and food. Service from Dean was top notch. Eyes adjusted to low light levels and we could see clearly. We were pleasantly surprised. Buen appetito. read more

The food is excellent. The servers are old school. If I wasn't on a fixed income, I would eat here more often. Our server was offering me good wine choices, but our large group wasn't a wine kind of group. She graciously left without a wine order. Excellent experience. Great place for a fancy romantic date. I haven't been here in 10 years cause I was a broke college student and it's a pricey place but I must say - My husband and I just had the best dinner date in our marriage. Food was great, the manicotti was literally the best meal I've ever eaten in my life. All of the service was super personal and friendly, we were served by the late Nello's daughter(she was lovely). The staff were all constantly in motion working hard and attentive, classy old school service. The environment is dark and cozy, makes you feel transported back in time to an evening dinner in Italy. Salad was great, seafood fettuccine with white sauce was great, hubs got the veal cordon blue and loved it. Fried calamari was perfect. Tiramisu was delicious. Too busy chowing to take pictures. Pretty pricey expect to spend at least $100 for two people. Got a little toasty towards the end but it's also a Redding ca 108 degree summer day and all of our ACs are struggling. Hubs said it was the best dinner experience of his life and we are big foodies. We were bummed we've been missing out for years. 11/10 would recommend and WE WILL BE BACK! read more

Nellos. Heard about it often since we moved to Redding a few months ago and decided that the white table cloths and old style service would be a great way to celebrate the anniversary this year. It almost feels sacrilege to do anything less than gush about a place that has been around for so long and clearly has a following here. And I get it. This is an old San Francisco style Italian restaurant with a menu that tends to favor traditional dishes. And what's not to love about a place where the server still rolls a cart over to your table to prepare salads tableside? And I liked this place I just didn't love this place. For one thing they give you a ton of food. Which if that is your thing then great as it is a bit spendy. But I would rather have smaller portions of very good food than huge portions of just OK food. There was so much ricotta in the Manicotti that the dish had little in the way of taste or texture. The vegetables on the plate were undercooked and the rigatoni that accompanied the entree was frankly overkill after the included Manicotti and had very little flavor. My veal dish, which actually did have good flavor suffered from way too much sauce so that the medallions were literally swimming in it. The whole plate was swimming in the sauce. The Tiramisu was a bright point but again the potion could have been half. My opinion (in case anyone cares :)), reduce the portions, try to go for a better balance of flavor and let your main ingredients shine. But judging by how busy this place was on a Thursday night there may be people in town who disagree with me and think I should keep my opinions to myself. This is a very very dated dining establishment. I think "back in the day" it was the place for a fine dining experience. However from what I could tell the interior and decor has stayed the same. It's a bit dingy and somewhat like a dark roomed Dennys . The food was mediocre at best. Service wasn't anything to brag about. I can say I've been but won't be back. read more

Nello's is an homage to a turn of the century east coat Italian restaurant. Waiters in black bow ties scurry about feverishly serving the packed dimly lite dinning room adorned with white linen table cloths. The service was very good although a bit harried. It was a pre Valentine's dinner, we arrived at 6:00. We ordered our dinners along with a table made Caesar Salad. I ordered the Snapper Piccata, and my wife ordered the Eggplant Parmigiana from the "Specials Menu." The fish served was definitely not Snapper, more like sole. There was about a tablespoon of pasta and a tablespoon of overcooked broccoli. My wife's eggplant was cut quite thick and chewy. We were never served our soup which was supposed to be included with our dinner. They also removed the ice cream desert from the dinner inclusions. We were really hoping this restaurant was going to be our go to place for Italian food, but alas it was rather disappointing. Perhaps it was just an off night, but my sense is that Nello's lost their mojo at some point....I hope they can find it again. read more

Absolutely one of the top restaurants in Redding. The food is always fresh and delicious. They grate blue cheese on the table side salad. The service is top notch, very professional, very attentive and you can tell they are proud to be serving at Nell's. It really feels like a fine dining experience from the past. Really comfortable atmosphere and you get the feeling you are welcomed like an old friend. Very good food for special celebrations-our granddaughter turned 13 and this was a good choice. Only negative-I ordered an Aperol spritz-they had no idea how to make it. Wrong glass and they served it with a line-really-should have been an orange slice and in a large wine glass plus it was kind of flat. read more

This restaurant is absolutely FANTASTIC!!! True old school Italian restaurant. Been in business (I was told) since 1963 and still owned by the same family. The atmosphere and dining room is extremely nice, white table cloth. The wait staff all wearing black pants, white long sleeve shirt with black neckties. The three employees we spoke with where all FANTASTIC people, our waiter was extremely helpful and polite. The food ranks up there with the old school Italian restaurants in NYC and SF. We ordered the veal and lasagna, both are excellent! You diner comes with soup or salad (which is made table side) and a antipasta dish and a pasta dish too. Excellent restaurant, I truly believe you will really enjoy this great restaurant. read more

This was our first time trying Nello's and we were very impressed. We had Saturday night reservations and were seated a few minutes early. The staff was very friendly and prompt. For such a small restaurant there were a lot of waitstaff and they were always busy but never neglected us. The fried ravioli were amazing! I got the chicken fettuccine Alfredo and hubby got the mixed grill plate (lamb chop, new york strip and sausage) everything was so good! Best minestrone soup I've had and so much food we ended up bringing boxes home. The added touch of handing out roses to the women was sweet. We did wish there was a tad more light but we will definitely be back. read more

I wish we would gave dined in because the restaurant is so pretty inside. When I went in to pick up my order, it was packed up so nicely, and the host gave me a beautiful yellow rose! This place is very old school Italian. Salad and banana foster are made table side with flourish. The service is attentive and gives off grade A male dancers. So why the 3 stars? The sauce...the sauce was runny. Not just in my dish but everyone else who was in my party too. IMHO a lasagna should be able to stand on its own, I got a lasagna soup. Was it tasty...meh. I've had better, I've had worse. But it definitely wasn't worth the asking price. Same with Banana Fosters. Most the ice cream is melted by the "flourish " they attempt. We went for a birthday celebration on a Tuesday. We ordered 5 Martinis and they filled the glasses 1/4 of the way up. When questioned they said that's just how they pour them. My bad we should have sent them back then. The anti pasta was a joke , the salad was just lettuce, gross! Food was mediocre! We are local and have been going here off and on for years and this was one of the worst experiences we have had! This place isn't what it use to be! read more

Always consistent. Always tasty. People as so welcoming. My favorites are the pesto tortellini, snapper and tiramisu.

Last time we went (prior to Covid) the food was good, and the service was good, but the carpet was sticky on my shoes and the atmosphere inside shouted "old and dingy." People here in Redding love the place, but it just did not check the boxes for me. Now perhaps they've thoroughly cleaned the place and updated it? Might be worth another try? read more

This restaurant has not changed since the 80's, and that is a great thing. The food is really good, and they give you plenty of it.

Nice ambiance. But too dark inside for me, couldn't read menu. Waiters were attentive. Food was eye appealing. Alotta hoopla mixing a leafy salad at my table. Clams were delicious though. We ran waiter to death asking for bread refill, 5 people eating and 4 pieces of bread at a time. Why? So Yes I would probably go back to Nello's and attempt another dish. read more

my girlfriend was excited about going to Nello's for her birthday and promised me an incredible dining experience. It was a cold, rainy night and we hurriedly ran from the car to the inviting warmth that was Nello's. "Reservation for two," I advised the host, eyes adjusting to the dim lighting of my ladies favorite restaurant. The host, distracted ,offered us a private table next to the entryway. I wanted this, my first Nello's experience, to be memorable. I asked the host if we could have a table a little further away from the entry as there was a draft and I didn't want my girlfriend cold on her birthday as she was in an elegant dress. The host became visibly annoyed and stated "the tables are reserved.". I stated that I had a reservation too, to which he curtly replied, "how about the table next to it?". I agreed. He then proceeded to toss the menus onto the table, nodded to me and walked away. My lady was shocked. I told her that he was just distracted, not to worry. The rest of the evening went well. The waiter was excellent. Drea ordered the Seafood Fettuccine which was to die for. I ordered Spagetti and meatballs which, on the other hand, nearly killed me. a watery sauce with plain noodles and one meatball. Drea ended up sharing her Fettuccine with me. So, my first Nello's experience was mixed. One distracted host can ruin what otherwise could have been a very nice event. I would definitely recommend the Seafood Fettuccine which was incredible, but stay away from the spaghetti as it was noticeably subpar with its watery sauce, bland noodles, and only one meatball, even though Spaghetti and MEATBALLS was in the menu. read more

Visited this place after a long look around for a good place to eat. The place was packed and so we ended up on the back bar for a few minutes. The wait was worth it.. the tuna on the antipasti plates was extraordinary! The salads were crisp and delicious.. I ordered the lasagna and it hit the spot.. it was rich and had a great marinara sauce. My gal got the ravioli and it seemed a tad small. Despite that she loved it! Maybe dress up a bit as we saw well dressed folks. Next time we go we are trying the calamari and tiramisu. Both looked amazing. Came for my wives birthday dinner and WOW. I was a little skeptical with some of these reviews but 10000/10 recommend on every level. The food was spectacular, my wife and I are food raters day in and day out, this was by far the best lasagna I've ever had. Everything else was amazing as well. Then they brought out her birthday tiramisu, best tiramisu we've ever had. The service was top notch, wife is really picky and indecisive our waiter was awesome at giving great meal options and helping her land on the chicken allergo. The ambiance was perfect, cozy, deep Italian, low lighting with great music at a perfect level. Will definitely be making the trip up to come again. read more
