I feel after all the years I've gone to Nello's, about 30 it is time for a review. We have enjoyed Nello's for a long time, but in the past 5 years it seems their food is not quite what it once was. The presentation is very unappetizing, a lot of red sauce dumped on whatever it was you ordered. We had a large party of 10 on evening, one being a Chef and their reviews were not good. Nello's you need to remember guests first taste with their eyes, if it doesn't look appealing it probably isn't. Thank you for the years of good meals but it is time to move on. read more

We went here for date night the other week and thought it was great! The atmosphere, service, food and overall ambiance were definitely five stars. We had food prepared at our table and the dim lit dining experience made us feel like it was just us in our little corner booth. Everything was wonderful. The atmosphere and servers are awesome! The food overall is ok. The minestrone was a little watery. As far as presentation each dish tended to look the same and their pasta gravy was bland. Excellent Italian in an unlikely strip mall location. While it is a bit old-fashioned (reminded me of fancy restaurants from my childhood), the food was pretty good. Drove by why on and road trip and found them on Yelp. We ordered to go since we were in sweats. It's really nice inside, I wish we were dressed a little better and we would have eaten there. I went here with a group for a wedding rehearsal dinner. The gnocchi were downright disgusting- gummy and flavorless. I asked for spaghetti with marinara instead, and it was just ok. Went for the first time the other day for dinner and really enjoyed it. Not sure why there are a couple negative reviews about the lighting, customer service, and no females working there. Our greeter was polite and showed us the way. Our server was a female and provided great service. Sorry the lighting is not like Olive Garden to those who can't see in the dim lighting and need a guide dog to get to their table. They give the ladies a flower as a parting gift. Being from out of town, this was our first time dining at Nellos, and we all agreed it was fantastic! We started with two appetizers, the calamari and fried ravioli, and both were awesome. Two of us had the chicken parmigiana and thought it was the best we've ever had. The other entree was the red snapper, which was also awesome! We arrived at our scheduled reservation time, but being that it was Mother's Day, they were running behind, so we told them we'd gladly come back in 30 minutes, and not only did they have a table ready for us when we got back, but they were kind enough to buy our first round of drinks! Very sad to write these words as we've gone to Nello's Place for 35 years and enjoyed every meal and the five-star service. Last night was an eye-opener. Everything has changed. When the mater'd said he didn't see our reservation, I should have known. Waiting awkwardly for a table, I noticed the ambiance has changed. That feeling that somehow you've been transported to Italy for what should be the best meal ever! is gone. The bread comes in paper napkins now, the bread is cool and like a puck; the menus are flimsy paper. We were seated and we sat. I went to the bar and ordered our own drinks. Same bartender, not the same quality drinks, however, which brings us to the food. We had to wait a long time to place the order and even longer to receive our food. The salmon was not fully cooked. Raw in the middle and fatty. So gross. It was in caper cream sauce (so good) but the noodles were in marinara sauce and sticky-cool. Would've asked for white noodles had I known. The broccoli was mush with perfectly cooked squash. The seafood fettuccini had a couple scallops, cream sauce and undercooked noodles. They didn't charge us for the salmon and the after dinner coffee was the best coffee I'd ever had, which is saying something. We paid under $40 for a perfectly cooked salmon feast at Red Lobster couple nights ago and $150 at Nello's expecting five-star but received one. Strangest year of my life. Meh. read more

Went as part of a group of 6 for a birthday dinner. I'm not from Redding, but the birthday girl and and made the suggestion. There's a reason that so many reviewers mention the low light level... it's dark! The menu is heavy with old school Italian. Pasta's tend to be overcooked, and there is nothing even remotely delicate about the sauces. On the plus side, the antipasto was great. I liked our waiter, but we sat there for hella before anyone came to take the drink orders, then we sat there for another hella before anyone took our food orders. We killed a bottle of wine between two people before the salad was done. All told, we were there for almost two hours. Two slow, impatient hours. Delicious find in Redding. Our first choice of restaurant was closed and we saw this place, and since we love Italian food, we stopped. We noticed the white linen tables and booths as we walked in, and so we thought it just might be up our alley. We were pleasantly greeted, and the wait staff was very professional, kind, and attentive. They got us refreshments and bread while we discussed what to order. We had the lasagna and it was delicious, and it was one of several choices for the early dinner menu, from 5-6:30pm, for $18. The lasagna noodles were perfectly al dente, the sauce was so flavorful, and it had meatballs in it that we loved. Delicious! Our son loved it too, and he's a little picky. The bread was fresh, soft on the inside, and crunchy on the outside, and they served it with creamery butter. The iced tea was delicious too. They serve the entrees with salad or soup, so I opted for the salad, which they mixed right at the table, and daddy chose the minestrone soup, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was a wonderful experience. My man already stated he wants to go back. His Pops was an old school Rat Pack fan, and he grew up with that vibe, as it reminded us of his Dad. read more
