New England Falconry - Russ with the 11 year old Harris' Hawk!

New England Falconry

(15 reviews)

Informative Compelling…read moreIntimate My experience with New England Falconry was a surprise gift, and it was pleasant and fulfilling all around. Chris was an excellent educator and guide, while the terrain we covered was pretty and appropriate for the falcons' hunt. I was part of a small group of just six people who joined to learn more about Harris' hawks and a number of other birds used for falconry, as well as a broad array of background on the activity itself, dating back 4000 years. I enjoyed the experience of having one of the hawks alight on my (safely-gloved) hand, as well as the hike and hunt experience. My particular outing saw the lives of no furry woodland creatures lost, and so it was more purely about the stalking efforts of the birds, seeing them in action, observing their cues and habits, and generally enjoying their majesty - which is all I really wanted anyway. If you've ever thought about falconry experiences before, this is an excellent shop to use. And if you've never thought about it before, I'd urge you to reconsider! Highly recommended.

One fine morning I was scrolling through Facebook, skimming snapshots of babies and tacos, when my…read morefriend Russ snapped into view, a bird of prey on his arm and a huge grin on his face. I naturally had to text him: WTF? He explained that he'd snagged a Groupon to NEF with his girlfriend and that it was, in fact, totally rad. I investigated the website and resolved that I would be the next on the old newsfeed to sport a hawk... then five months passed. Fortuitously, I was finally able to find a friend who would (1) humor my request for a roadtrip [the falconing grounds are 1h 45m from the city], and (2) refrain from flinching at the price [$130 pp for an extended intro session]. One Spotify playlist titled "Falconing" later, we were off. We pulled into a driveway with a ramshackle barn and a few Harris Hawks hanging around on perches. Chris introduced himself and launched into a lengthy treatise on their mating habits, pecking order, hunting proclivities and adaptive skills. He let us pepper him with questions, and it was really cool to hear someone so knowledgeable talk about his favorite topic. Then we walked into an extremely chilly, foggy field (read: the Scotland scenes in Skyfall) and Chris showed us how to get a one and a half pound hawk to land on us from neighboring trees. We also strolled around for a bit, and our bird scouted ahead of us. It was, in fact, totally rad. I snapped copious photos up until feeding time (read: dead mice), then we returned to the driveway to put the birds back where they came from. I would heartily recommend this adventure to anyone who likes doing Cool Stuff (see also: trapeze class, dog sledding, zorbing), or anyone who wants to buy the coolest gift ever for someone awesome.

I'm very surprised by some of the bad reviews for their parakeets. One of ours died and the place…read morewhere we normally get them had a VERY long waiting list. Our little 'keet, Jojo, needed a buddy so, reluctantly , I went to PetSmart. We've had birds (parakeets and cockatiels) for over 40 years and we really know quite a lot about them. First, I was pleased to see that all the 'keets were in a very clean cage with plenty of food, water and toys. I looked carefully and all the birds looked healthy and alert. The guy assisting me was also very nice and helpful. I selected my bird (Pedro) and went home. Pedro was very quiet and didn't move around much for the first day or two and ate very little....which is normal.....but he would get on my finger when nudged to do so....which was surprising as he hadn't been hand-tamed. Soon he began to explore. He and my other 'keet, JoJo, became friendly and after 2 weeks they were happily bonded. It's been 7 mos. since Pedro came home and he's a delight! Very healthy, playful and sings/chirps a lot. So overall I'm very happy with PetSmart and want to offer advice to new bird owners who posted negative things. (1) Birds are not toys or 'decor accessories' and you need to do some reading to know how to take care of them re: feeding, type of cage and general heath care. (2) Of course your bird couldn't fly when you brought it home! Very appropriately, all birds wings are clipped so they can 'flutter' but not gain any real height and fly. This is for their safety. Many veterinarians recommend regular wing-clipping as birds sometimes will fly out an open door and get lost. Also, they need time to get to know their environment as they don't know what walls and windows are, so when you let them out of their cages for a while (which you should do every day) they won't get enuf speed to crash into a wall. We used to clip our birds' wings but we're VERY diligent and now let them free-fly for about 5 hours a day in the dining room where they live. (3) You need to pay attention to them.....not just talking and showing affection but realize that birds hide symptoms when they're sick so when you notice they're not eating, feathers are fluffed-up or they're just not acting like themselves.....they are sick and things can go downhill quickly. Bird veterinarians are hard to find but there's a very good one in South Hadley, Ma. Or you can do a search online for bird vets. in your area. Birds are great little pets......I wish all the best to you bird parents!

Also, you can dry your dog with their electric dryer. It's an all-around pet place to go with full service.

We've had the absolute best experience with Dave and his wonderful team. From the very beginning,…read moreDave patiently walked us through his process, clearly managed expectations, and created a safe, nurturing environment for our Jingles. During the three weeks we were apart, he shared daily updates--complete with training videos and photos--which made us feel truly connected to Jingles' progress and growth every step of the way. Dave thoughtfully tailors each session to your dog's needs and leaves no question unanswered, putting you completely at ease knowing your puppy is in the most capable hands. Jingles now has a true home away from home, and we feel grateful to have found trusted partners in her upbringing. After all, it really does take a village!

We recently adopted a new puppy (Nala) to keep our 3 year old Golden doodle (Augie) company…read more Although the two dogs are siblings from different litters, they didn't immediately take to being together. Unlike Augie, who was always sweet and extremely mellow even as a puppy, Nala bit us in the face, barked, destroyed things in our home and terrorized Augie to the extent that he would run away from her. We weren't sure we could keep her because she was so badly behaved and seemed untrainable. In the span of 3 weeks, David transformed Nala from a challenging puppy into a dream puppy. She obeys all the commands, walks off leash in our wooded neighborhood, sleeps hours later than when she left and most importantly she is able to play well with Augie who now seeks her out and willingly allows her even to sleep in his own bed. David sent dozens of videos so we could watch her while she was in training and learn the language she was learning from David. He kept in contact and was even able to drop her off and meet our other dog for a walk with Nala. Without Massachusetts Dog Training, we would likely have given our wonderful puppy away and never realized what a gem we had. David helped to uncover Nala's true potential and helped us to realize how smart, sweet and special she is. We will be forever grateful for his wisdom, expertise and love for our Nala.
