THIS is the reason why I love food.
was treated to this place along with my friend by my co-worker Apeksha.
very easy to find in a shopping plaza. you really can't see it from the road but you will see a sign that says 'thai place' and those letters are in pink so when you see that turn up in there and then you'll see the black neehee sign on your left.
from the outside it looks like it's a huge place but on the inside it's medium/small. there were a number of families and all of the tables were full when i got there. good sturdy orange chairs and metal tables. clean. a walk up counter with the ice cream the first thing you see and an easy to read menu board with headings and descriptions.
I wasn't sure what to make of it as I looked at the site menu first. it seemed to be very 'everything is bread and/or fried' heavy and that made me nervous as to what I would be able to eat. plenty of vegetarian options with a decent amount of vegan, about 6 or 7 that i could count.
i was able to seat myself but i don't think i would have gotten a seat. thankfully, apeksha was already there as she said that there is usually a line and she wanted to get a table, plus she had her son with her since it's his favorite restaurant. I had no idea what to order but she ordered for us. we had the guj thali (which is a huge platter of basmati rice, naan flatbread, and a multitude of chutneys/rotis that ranged from sweet to spicy, with vegetables, potato and/or yogurt and lentil soup), along with dahi samosa chaat (with peas, mint, other spices, chutney, and yogurt), and Chinese bhel ( crispy chinese noodles mixed with spices and veggies). oh, and we shared some of apeksha's son's food which was the pave bhaji (vegetables cooked with spicy butter and served with pav).
everything was FLAVORFUL and seasoned well. just the right amount of heat that wasn't overpowering. my friend doesn't eat spicy food and I thought she wasn't going to make it thru lunch she was sniffing so much and drinking so much water. I mean, this stuff is mild. I eat habanero peppers on a weekly basis so the heat level for me is probably higher than most but this stuff was less than an jalapeno pepper hot and she was saying it was too much. so, if you can't handle ANY type of heat, take small bites and do taste tests on everything before you take a bigger portion. she was made fun of immensely. we shared everything family style and got to eat with our fingers, which, really, is the best way to eat. while it was rich tasting, i didn't feel as i was eating heavy and i wasn't stuffed. i notice that with ethnic restaurants, they have many small dishes as if they were sides and you share. American food is just an entrée portion with an entrée side. smh
anywho, we ended our meal with a mango lassis which is mango puree blended with yogurt. a smoother and less icy version of a smoothie. creamy and delicious.
i dance and rock when i eat good food. and i danced and rocked the whole time i was eating. this food is soo freaking good. if you are looking for flavorful, seasoned, spicy, well cooked, well portioned food that doesn't cost too much, neehee's is the place to go. i am already planning a day to go back. yay.
as a side note, i am so happy that i know where the indian population is. authentic ethnic food and people is what i am all about. read more
