As someone who orders generally the same thing every other week, Chicken 65, Gobi Manchurian, and often an order of Naan, this place is wonderful. The portions feel reasonable for the price and the food itself is delicious and brings flavor to my entire week. They are prompt with takeout and while the dine-in experience isn't spectacular, it was pleasant and unintrusive while I savored my Briyani. Their website is also very well put together and intuitive to use for ordering online. read more

Food - 3.5/5 Service - 4/5 Ambiance - 3.5/5 Below is what we ordered and our feedback Chicken kothu paratha- tasted okay, was a little bland Pepper Chicken - Good flavor, but wouldn't order it again Paneer fried rice - Tasted good. Would try it again Veg biriyani - Tasted good. Had a good balance of spice and flavor read more

Chennai Express offers virundhu and this Sunday, it was offered at Taste of India, Ann Arbor. Same food; same chef; same taste exactly like the one in Chennai Express.. Banana leaf virundhu had so many varieties of items: rich flavorful curries were the highlight. Desserts were the best : especially the pongal sweet at the end. Lovely and kind service offered with utmost respect and care! Worth the time and full tummy! read more

Chennai Express - Ended of Banana leaf virundhu with a ladoo! - Indian Near Me - Plymouth, Michigan

Eating at Chennai Express is the closest you'll feel to being in Tamil Nadu in Southeast Michigan. I've eaten at Chennai Express a couple of times now, and it's always been an excellent experience overall -- great food, great service, and to top it off, it feels like home. They've got a solid menu of options, including all of your favorite South Indian dishes as well as a few other non- standard options. I love the Mysore Masala Dosa here, but their curries and Biriyanis are excellent too. The interior is pretty simple and straightforward, but there's something to be said for a no-nonsense approach to good food. Santhosh is always really nice -- helpful with the menu for those who are less familiar, and especially makes you feel like you're back in India if you speak Tamil! Pro Tip: they have a weekend special menu that's only available on Sundays! It's featured lots of authentic and rare dishes in the past, so I'd recommend checking it out on Instagram to see what they'll be offering for the coming Sunday! Overall, definitely check out Chennai Express if you're looking for good South Indian food anywhere remotely near Plymouth, MI! read more

We've been coming here for a few years, and love the food. We mostly plan our visits around the weekend specials - Bhai Style Mutton, Hoskote, and Thalapakatti Biryanis are all packed with flavor and my personal favorites. If you're dining in definitely try the Gobi 65 - crispy, tasty, and never disappoints. Service is always friendly and quick. The recent interior update is a nice touch -- makes the space feel fresh and inviting. In a nutshell, Chennai Express is a solid spot for some great South Indian food and Tamil Nadu style biryanis read more

Very good food. Huge menu, super friendly staff. They should have a "the chennai menu" several authentic to chennai (a metro city in South India) dishes are hidden in the huge menu. Like parotta paya, idly vada, Set dosa fish curry and filter coffee. Most of the dishes that we ordered were awesome. Some recommendations,, the coconut korma, veg biriyani, any dosa variety. Get idly only if it is hot or made to order, it was cold. Definitely try tender coconut payasam ( sweet) The manager Santhosh is very friendly, he kind of upsells stuff, so be careful . The ambience itself is kind of a dive. Don't expect a dine in experience. Super casual place. read more

My brother and I stopped in tonight and ordered take out. It was a very busy place for a Tuesday with a lot of take out business. The staff worked efficiently to keep the orders flowing. The staff seemed to know most of the customers. They helped me to select my order former the huge selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal. There is something on the menu for everyone. We ordered Saag with chicken, chicken biryani, lamb chukka. After a short wait we were on our way home with our meal. All were a taste treat with very different flavors. The dining area is pretty basic, some decorations, but a clean and friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend Chennai Express. I will be back to try one of the many dishes offered. read more

Ordered takeout from here in October when we visited friend and it was amazing first time trying it. I recommend the Chicken Briyani, lamb/or goat chuka, and chicken 65. read more

A 4.5 I've been to this place multiple times, and it has always met my expectations. I first tried their breakfast, then explored their biryanis and buffet. They consistently serve tasty food in all these categories. A special mention goes to their puri, Chicken 65 biryani, and kothu parotta--they're simply outstanding. The restaurant is conveniently located at the corner of the building next to CVS. This restaurant would stay in top 5 India restaurants around the Detroit area. read more

Overall 3.5 stars. 5 star for food, 3 star for ambiance and 2 star for service. Long wait to place the order and for food to be served. All the items were delicious and freshly prepared. Filter coffee is worth trying. read more

This is a small place and would prefer to take carry out then go and eat there. We liked the South Indian food from this place like the Biriyani, pepper masala, karampodi chicken, goat chukka, paratha. However did not like the North Indian style chicken butter masala or paneer items. I will stick to the southern dishes. Service was very good. read more

This food was so so delicious, we ordered for our office, got about $115 worth of food and it was a lot! It was our first time ordering and the food was quick, I liked ordering online, it would be nice if there was more descriptions though. We ordered Butter Chicken, rice, naan, chicken coconut korma and aloo gobi. read more

Wow. That was absolutely outstanding. Some of the best Indian food I've had in the area in years. It is not the prettiest place and you'll eat on paper plates with plastic sporks but you won't even care because the food is that good. We had the malai kofta (10/10), paneer tikka masala (9.5/10), garlic naan (9/10), and samosas 15/10. I will absolutely be back. read more

The food here is SO authentic, and so flavorful. Flavors are complex. When they advertise a specific type biryani, it actually tastes like the region it's from. Food is not super oily, like at many other places. One of the most authentic Indian restaurants I've found in Michigan so far. We will be back! No pictures of food because I ate it too quickly. But we got rasam, thalapakati chicken biryani, and chicken chettinad. Check their Instagram for weekend items and specials. read more

Was super excited to try this place based on the reviews, but our interaction with the staff left a lot to be desired (we walked in and ordered). Not super friendly, and when they handed me our order, I said "thanks" and was met with silence. It's pretty standard practice to say thank you to the customer instead of the other way around, but I guess not here. Regardless, what was really bothersome was our so called "boneless" chicken biryani, which was full of bones. The pic shows the bones (top of the container) I found after my kid pulled out at least 8 prior to that. You gotta be kidding me. read more

Excellent! I tried Chennai Express tonight--takeout Chicken Tikka Masala, chicken biryanis, gobi manchurian and butter naan. I placed my order that one next-door to CVS to pick up a few things before going back to pick up my takeout order. Everything was really delicious. Great depth of flavor. The perfect level of heat. Good portion sizes. And everything prepared fresh. Although it is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall and if you didn't know it was there you might miss it, if you park in front of CVS you can't miss it. There are a handful of tables inside if you'd like to enjoy your dinner there. Or, like me, you can place your order to go. The menu is very extensive with a lot to choose from. I have plenty left over and can't wait to try new items on the menu next time I'm in the mood for a good Indian cuisine. read more

Very delicious food! Chef owner and taste of food is reflective of that . Apollo fish : crunchy light battered fish coated in a delish sauce Mysore masala dosa very good, the sambar is very tasty and very balanced Podi idli : light smell of ghee, soft pieces of idli and a delicious podi coating Last but not the least is the traditional payesam made with tender coconut . Don't get fooled by the paper plates ... food tastes better and more homemade than way more fancy expensive Indian restaurant. Service is very authentic too . Great experience , took food home for my mother ... packed the dosa so nicely and she loved her meal . Thanks chef!! read more

I couldn't be happier to have this place so close to home. We are very fortunate to have so many solid Indian restaurants in the area. Given that, I would argue Chennai's cuisine rivals for the top spot. Normally, I'd go over the dishes you can get, but I am not an expert at Indian food. Lately, I stick to Gobi 65 and Chili Chicken or Chicken 65. But when I'm not so conscious of my dietary restrictions, every samosa, biryani, and naan I've had has been wonderful. I recommend, highly. read more

I found my go to restaurant when I'm craving Indian food. The Lamb biryani was very flavorful and the spice level (hot) met my expectations! I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered the shrimp 65 but it didn't disappoint and it had a good crunch to it. The naan bread was very good too. I ordered door dash so I'm not sure how the restaurant looks on the inside but the service and delivery was fast! read more

Food is great. Everything had its own distinct flavor unlike some places where all of the dishes taste the same.

Food was very good!! Crispy rava onion masala dosa and meduvada, amazingly tasty mixed veg coconut korma and panner chettinad. Food 5/5. Service 2/5. Ambience 3/ 5. Food is excellent. Authentic, spicy, tastes that reminds you of your favorite dhaba restaurants in India. Would like them to provide better cutlery. 2/5 for service because they did not tell some menu prices are not updated, ask the price before you order to be not surprised when the bill arrives. read more

This place is my favorite Indian spot. I recently tried Chennai Express and was blown away by their goat chukka! I never order goat, but I thought I'd give it a try and it was absolutely incredible. The food was very tasteful and not too overpowering with seasoning. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for delicious Indian cuisine. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming. I will definitely be coming back! read more

Food is excellent! Had tried a bunch of appetizers and entrees - one of the few restaurants where all what we got over multiple visits have been consistently excellent.
