Eating at Chennai Express is the closest you'll feel to being in Tamil Nadu in Southeast Michigan. I've eaten at Chennai Express a couple of times now, and it's always been an excellent experience overall -- great food, great service, and to top it off, it feels like home. They've got a solid menu of options, including all of your favorite South Indian dishes as well as a few other non- standard options. I love the Mysore Masala Dosa here, but their curries and Biriyanis are excellent too. The interior is pretty simple and straightforward, but there's something to be said for a no-nonsense approach to good food. Santhosh is always really nice -- helpful with the menu for those who are less familiar, and especially makes you feel like you're back in India if you speak Tamil! Pro Tip: they have a weekend special menu that's only available on Sundays! My brother and I stopped in tonight and ordered take out. It was a very busy place for a Tuesday with a lot of take out business. The staff worked efficiently to keep the orders flowing. The staff seemed to know most of the customers. They helped me to select my order former the huge selection of vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal. There is something on the menu for everyone. We ordered Saag with chicken, chicken biryani, lamb chukka. After a short wait we were on our way home with our meal. All were a taste treat with very different flavors. The dining area is pretty basic, some decorations, but a clean and friendly atmosphere. I highly recommend Chennai Express. I will be back to try one of the many dishes offered. read more

Very good food. Huge menu, super friendly staff. They should have a "the chennai menu" several authentic to chennai (a metro city in South India) dishes are hidden in the huge menu. Like parotta paya, idly vada, Set dosa fish curry and filter coffee. Most of the dishes that we ordered were awesome. Some recommendations,, the coconut korma, veg biriyani, any dosa variety. Get idly only if it is hot or made to order, it was cold. Definitely try tender coconut payasam ( sweet) The manager Santhosh is very friendly, he kind of upsells stuff, so be careful . A 4.5 I've been to this place multiple times, and it has always met my expectations. I first tried their breakfast, then explored their biryanis and buffet. They consistently serve tasty food in all these categories. A special mention goes to their puri, Chicken 65 biryani, and kothu parotta--they're simply outstanding. This is a small place and would prefer to take carry out then go and eat there. We liked the South Indian food from this place like the Biriyani, pepper masala, karampodi chicken, goat chukka, paratha. However did not like the North Indian style chicken butter masala or paneer items. I will stick to the southern dishes. Service was very good. read more

It was our first time ordering and the food was quick, I liked ordering online, it would be nice if there was more descriptions though. The food here is SO authentic, and so flavorful. Flavors are complex. When they advertise a specific type biryani, it actually tastes like the region it's from. Food is not super oily, like at many other places. One of the most authentic Indian restaurants I've found in Michigan so far. We will be back! No pictures of food because I ate it too quickly. Wow. That was absolutely outstanding. Some of the best Indian food I've had in the area in years. It is not the prettiest place and you'll eat on paper plates with plastic sporks but you won't even care because the food is that good. We had the malai kofta (10/10), paneer tikka masala (9.5/10), garlic naan (9/10), and samosas 15/10. I will absolutely be back. read more

Was super excited to try this place based on the reviews, but our interaction with the staff left a lot to be desired (we walked in and ordered). Not super friendly, and when they handed me our order, I said "thanks" and was met with silence. It's pretty standard practice to say thank you to the customer instead of the other way around, but I guess not here. Regardless, what was really bothersome was our so called "boneless" chicken biryani, which was full of bones. The pic shows the bones (top of the container) I found after my kid pulled out at least 8 prior to that. You gotta be kidding me. read more

Gyat damn this food was soo good.. Butter chicken and garlic cheese Naan was soo good it made me dance while I was eating it. The butter chicken was soo well balanced. It just melted in your mouth. I live in Canton and we are soo blessed to have soo many different Indian cuisines. This is gonna be my favorite spot for now on. I also branched out and tried the chilli chicken... AMAZING! Excellent! I tried Chennai Express tonight--takeout Chicken Tikka Masala, chicken biryanis, gobi manchurian and butter naan. I placed my order that one next-door to CVS to pick up a few things before going back to pick up my takeout order. Everything was really delicious. Great depth of flavor. The perfect level of heat. Good portion sizes. And everything prepared fresh. Although it is tucked away in the corner of a strip mall and if you didn't know it was there you might miss it, if you park in front of CVS you can't miss it. There are a handful of tables inside if you'd like to enjoy your dinner there. Or, like me, you can place your order to go. The menu is very extensive with a lot to choose from. I have plenty left over and can't wait to try new items on the menu next time I'm in the mood for a good Indian cuisine. read more

I couldn't be happier to have this place so close to home. We are very fortunate to have so many solid Indian restaurants in the area. Given that, I would argue Chennai's cuisine rivals for the top spot. Normally, I'd go over the dishes you can get, but I am not an expert at Indian food. I found my go to restaurant when I'm craving Indian food. The Lamb biryani was very flavorful and the spice level (hot) met my expectations! I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered the shrimp 65 but it didn't disappoint and it had a good crunch to it. The naan bread was very good too. This place is my favorite Indian spot. I recently tried Chennai Express and was blown away by their goat chukka! I never order goat, but I thought I'd give it a try and it was absolutely incredible. Food is excellent! Had tried a bunch of appetizers and entrees - one of the few restaurants where all what we got over multiple visits have been consistently excellent. Being Chennai Express , First few times I ordered typical South Indian dishes but last time I tried chicken tikka and that was excellent as well. Good food coupled with great service and clean , friendly environment, I would rank this restaurant near the top of casual dining establishments.
