My husband went for the buffet and enjoyed the selection (I snuck a taste of the butter chicken and it was delicious)! I ordered the Korma with chicken and roti. The roti was overcooked so that was disappointing but it tasted good. The portion was big enough where I brought it home and enjoyed it for another meal! For those that remember the old place off of Liberty, this isn't that place... The food was good, but the buffet isn't as expansive as the old place, and just not as good. Butter chicken is one of my absolute favorites and it was on the buffet for yesterday's lunch service! Unfortunately, whoever prepared the chicken took a cleaver and just shattered the bones in the poor chicken pieces. There were bone shards and cartilage throughout all of the pieces rendering them inedible, at least in a restaurant. If I were in the privacy of my own home, I could have picked up the chicken pieces and gnawed away at them to get the meat, but in a restaurant, no way. That said, I wouldn't have wanted to gnaw away at the pieces anyway. Horribly annoying to eat anything that way. There was another meat dish that was offered and it was kind of the same thing. I think maybe it was some type of curried goat. Great flavor and heat, but really inedible due to the prep of the meat. The curry sauce was nice over the rice, but that's not what was intended. The buffet lacked one of my favorite additions, pickles! I dearly love Indian pickles and an Indian meal without them is almost criminal. There were some really tasty vegetable pakoras and another app that was deep fried with a fiery red color. I asked what it was and the lady told me it was some type of baby corn. Delicious. The old restaurant always had some great desserts like gulab jamun and mango kheer. Yesterday, they had some type of chocolate sheet cake that appeared to be store bought. It was fine, but not the same. I guess it wasn't a bad meal, but for $20 per person, with expectations of what I know they can do, this was kind of a letdown. read more

Updated review for their lunch buffet! It's back on weekends from 11:30am - 2:45pm and it's $20pp. The selection was GREAT, fresh and hot! There were lots of items I wouldn't have ordered myself like the medhu vada (savory lentil doughnut) as well as the delightful payasam dessert (rice pudding with fresh coconut and tapioca). I also loved that they had both veg and goat biryani. Yum. They also kept the spice level VERY VERY mild. I usually order MEDIUM here and get rocked (in a good way!) We got there right at 11:30am on a Saturday and it was quiet for the first 5 minutes then people were STREAMING in, so clearly it's not a secret anymore ha. read more

It came with a dipping sauce and vegetables on the side which were a nice complement to the zesty, flavorful chicken. I only come here maybe once a year when I visit my sister for the holidays. I travel a lot and love trying new foods wherever I go, and I can confidently say this is the best or definitely top 5 Indian restaurants I've had around the world. Nestled in Ann Arbor, the service and friendliness of the restaurant is unrivaled. I have never been so sweetly greeted and treated by nicer people. Front of house, the server was incredible, giving us options and recommendations. We have some gluten free in the party and she made sure everything was ok for our party. We order so many dishes: paper dosas (they're massive!), chicken pasanda (also known as Mughal Chicken), aloo palak, daal makhani, and chicken Manchurian (Indo-Chinese!!!!!!) I am so sorry if I misspelled anything. Anyways, dish after dish was a banger, with incredible spice and freshness. If you are worried about how spicy something is, they will make anything to your level if you ask! At the end of the meal, she brought the kids a few slices of cake. How incredible is that. We love this place and I will always rave about how great they are. Super family friendly with books and stuffed animals to entertain kids. We got ravadosa, masala dosa and kofta with rice. I think masala dosa is different in every restaurant. This masala dosa was almost paper dosa with no potato stuffing in the dosa but outside. The tomato chutney was a good add on for the dosas. I had kofta and rice, I'd prefer spicier version! Oh how I love Madras Masala. Their food is always amazing but even better is their service. The people who work here have always worked hard to make their restaurant very inviting and truly they have the best service of any restaurant in Ann Arbor. I've talked with one of the owners or workers (in not sure what her position was) and she talked about how much she valued community and it was wonderful speaking with her. I found Madras Masala on Grubhub one night 2-3 weeks ago, ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala for myself and a Chicken Biryani for my other half. It was so good, that we decided to go back for my birthday last week. We took my sister and her boyfriend along, as well. We had first decided to go to Shalimar, but talked my sister into coming here instead to give it a shot. We all agreed that when it was done, it was better than our last experience at Shalimar. One of the owners was our waitress and if I overheard correctly, she was cooking too. Once she found out it was my birthday, she brought each of us a few pieces of cake, and wished me a happy birthday, she also gave us a discount on the meal. 12 years later so apparently it's time to update this review! Madras Masala used to be downtown, and now it's moved. I went to the downtown location a few times when I was a UM student. I was in Ann Arbor today for work and a friend and I got delivery for lunch. I had their Gobi 65, which was great but a bit spicy; butter chicken, mild, which was very tasty; and both their regular and cheese naan, which were both good, but I preferred the cheese. My friend got a Gobi vindaloo, I believe. Pricing was on par with other Indian places I've ordered from in the Metro Detroit area too, I believe my chicken was $15.99 although I don't know how much it was for delivery. I would definitely order from here again or stop by when in the area though, as everything was tasty. read more

Casual place where you order at the counter, they give you a pager, you have to go grab paper plates, disposable utensils & napkins, then you bring your food on a tray to a table. I think it's fine to eat there but don't expect much but we noticed most people order carry out. They also have a free parking lot in the back so that's convenient. This is the first Indian place in a long time, where ordering a spice level of Hot, actually means HOT! I honestly might get Medium next time! I got the chicken vindaloo (comes with rice) & my friend got the Malai Koftka mild. There are cups for water and plenty of seating. It had never occurred to me before that a restaurant would choose to serve an entree, all 4 of them, not only on paper plates, but in a small, round cardboard container like the ones you might buy a pint of ice cream in. You literally are given the container you can take food home in, if you want to. Thus, no matter what the food was like, I couldn't take it seriously. That fact alone made it easy for me to decide never to come back again, though the food was edible and decidedly Indian. The service was very slow, and there were no amenities, extras or efforts made to please customers, other than a friendl waitress who had a lot to say. Had dinner with my friend after we had done workout in NCRB. In the review I would like to compare this restaurant with Taste of India Suvai, which is another Indian restaurant near it. Both restaurants had large dining areas and both offer a wide range of Indian dishes. The seats in Suvai seems to be wider. I ordered tikka masala and kadai in both restaurants and I think the sizes are similar, while this one is more spicy. However, I think the breads in Indian Suvai was better. I have read past reviews and I will agree the food is good but the customer service I received from the man at counter was not good. This was my first time and I was not familiar with their extensive menu. There were three tables with customers. The place is big and it looks like they haven't been in this place long, because it doesn't seem to flow smoothly. So getting back to the gentleman that was taking my order. He asked if I was taking out or eating in, I said eating in and he said well we are closing in 10 minutes, to me that seemed rude. Especially since he had 3 different groups come in after I ordered and was waiting for my order. He didn't say anything to them about closing in ten minutes. I ordered the gobi manchurian and the paneer tikka masala. They did not disappoint. Not a big fan of the onion uttapam as it turned dry quickly. Bindi masala was light on salt. Chilli paneer was a bit overwhelming in flavor after a couple bites. It was quite gummy as well. MM paneer masala was lacking in flavor compared to the paneer tikka masala. Baingan bharta - has smoky flavor but very bland otherwise. Gobi vindaloo - tastes like tomato purée, vinegar and chili mixed together. Teeth will take a beating with all the vinegar they pack in there. Also, the potatoes were undercooked and the cauliflower was a bit tough. Yikes! Paneer kulcha - paneer inside was tough and stale. Truly missing the old location. One of my favorite things about the Maynard location was the extensive menu. That is gone. The Packard location offers up the NeeHee's concept of television menu boards and self service. The Chili Paneer was good, but not great. I ordered that and a side of rice, and was told the Chili Paneer was an appetizer, and didn't come with rice.(that's why I ordered a side of rice) The Indo-Chinese offerings were limited. When you walk into this restaurant, there is a counter for you to place a self-service order for for food. The tables and everything are spread out nicely and they are clean. The ambiance can be loud if there are large parties, but otherwise it is an enjoyable place to eat that is very clean. I ordered the masala dosa, and it was delicious. The potatoes that came with it are season perfectly. The dosa while it looks large is a very thin bread with no stuffing and you were supposed to break off pieces of that to eat with the side of the potato potatoes, and the soup (sambar) that is served with it. I did particularly enjoy the coconut chutney but not the other chutney but they can also be used to dip the dosa into. They are authentic. Lots of parking at the Packard location. It's been years since my last visit, but on Black Friday, came here for lunch with the nephews. I like the fact that you get to try different options and eat as much as you want... to be honest, 2 plates and I was done. My go to was the tandoori chicken, naan, white rice and their butter curry. The butter curry was excellent and went very well with naan and rice. Yes, I had two servings of butter curry! Unfortunately, the tandoori chicken was cold on this visit, it wasn't even lukewarm sad to say. Come for the lunch buffet, that's where the value is and you have option to try different food.
