Nice space, quick and friendly service! This place started filling up at 6:30 on a Thursday. First I enjoyed a cup of warming chai tea. Their samosas are some of the best in town -- light, crispy shell and SALTED on the outside which takes them to another level. The Momo Soup is super generous with 10 dumplings in there! The broth/soup is nice, a mild but interesting sweet potato puree, perhaps? I'm not an expert in this cuisine but it was comforting and not too rich or anything. Came for family dinner... it was my first time, second time for other family members... they all knew what they wanted and we ended up with the following items: - Samosa - Momo Chili - Garlic Naan - Chicken Tikka Masala - Lamb Curry - Chicken Shyakpa - Lamb Biryani Lets start with the favorite dish - Momo Chili! I would highly recommend you try this. Got it spicy and it did have a kick, if not into spicy food, get it medium. I also like the chicken masala. For the rest of other dishes, they were decent. Naan was ok and honestly speaking had better naan at other establishments. The lamb curry was different than what I had expected and the their biryani wasn't fluffy as I had expected. I stopped here for dinner before a show in Dexter and was not disappointed! They have so many vegan options. I let my server know I was in a hurry and he helped me pick out something that could be made quickly, which I appreciated. The food was fresh and delicious and the place had an overall friendly vibe. Very cozy and inviting dining space! The restaurant is in a strip mall area, so there is a lot of open parking nearby. I've mostly gotten the steamed momo, makhani and chow mein, and both have been delicious! I request the spicy and it's properly spicy and still edible. Yum! Great option for a mix of Nepalese/Himalayan/Indian food and flavors. Assuming it's the same ownership as Everest Sherpa (same menu pretty menu), which I also love! MUSTS: - Steamed Chicken Momos. Both the momos themselves and the dipping sauces are fantastic and unique compared to other dumpling styles! So much flavor. - Bhuteko. Also more unique! We love both the lamb or chicken. Round it out with whatever you like! In addition to the above, we got (for delivery) Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, Lamb Biryani, Vegetable Pakora, Garlic Naan, Mango Lassi. A little overboard for 2? Sure... but we couldn't decide on anything to take out so extra it was! Delicious all together and made for some fun leftovers. Would note that spice levels are not particularly high here. Wonderful restaurant that shares the culinary traditions of Nepal, India, Tibet, and B! We got the non-veg lunch special (chicken makhani, naan, veg side, soup, dessert, and a drink of choice) and the lamb shyakpa (Sherpa stew) with a cornmeal dough. Highly recommend the hot tea. Both were delicious and flavorful. The stew had so many different types of vegetables. Both were delicious and filling! The service was really attentive and friendly. Base Camp was a great departure from the ordinary for a recent lunch. My husband and I arrived right at prime lunch time and were happy to be seated immediately. A server brought waters while we perused the menu before deciding on our meals: Saag Paneer for me and Chicken Makhani for him. I also appreciated that the menu denoted which items were gluten free, dairy free, or vegan for those with specific dietary needs. Food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. We had both taken mild iterations of our respective dishes. The Saag Paneer lacked a bit of flavor, so I may get it a bit more spicy next time. He let me try his Chicken Makhani, though, which was delicious! Portions were generous, and I was able to finish the second half of my meal the following day. I really enjoyed our lunch at base camp, and hope that we return again soon. read more

A new ethnic restaurant opening up on the west side of town is always a welcome event. We've been driving by this spot for several months anticipating the opening of the Base Camp restaurant and were not disappointed. We usually wait awhile before visiting a new place to give them a chance to settle in but since we are real fans of this type of food we couldn't wait and went on a Thursday after it had opened two days prior. We arrived right at the 5 PM opening time and the place was about one-third full. By the time we left shortly after 6 it was full which is hopefully a sign of this place's future success. On this visit we enjoyed a half order of Chicken Momos, an order of Samosas, and order of Saag Paneer, an order of Lamb Bhuteko and some Nans. The food was uniformly excellent. Service was a bit slow as they are a bit short staffed and the kitchen was cranking out "to go" orders as fast as it could. Even though the service was a bit slow the staff were extremely friendly and apologetic. This is to be expected on the third day of opening a new restaurant. I am confident that in due course the speed of service will improve and won't be an issue. In fact, we are going to do a take out order tonight! read more

My favorite Himalayan place is in Dearborn: Himalayan Flames. And the issue is, it's probably the best food of this type that I have ever had (and I've lived in England and Austin - both with very great options.) So it ruins you for other places. The food here was edible, but the chicken was very tough (over-cooked) and the saag was very boring in flavor. I asked for mild spice, and that means no spice... so if you want a little spice, I suggest ordering medium or hot. I guess that they think a Michigander can't handle the heat. I can. :) The decor is a little cheap, but the service was very very friendly. The parking lot is small, so it was good that I was there at an off time. Maybe I need to try other things? But I did ask the guy to help pick things out for me... so not sure what else I could have done to have chosen better food stuffs. read more

I'm a big fan of Asian food such as noodles and sushi. In fact, a long time ago, I visited a Chinese restaurant in Chicago, Illinois where I was introduced to chicken feet for the first time. Needless to say, I was hooked. Now, my folks and I have stumbled upon a Tibetan restaurant where the food is delicious and the customer service is absolutely spot on. Base Camp doesn't feel like a restaurant. It feels like a place where you feel at peace and you've been teleported to another world entirely. It had that kind of ambiance, it's that great. I recommend the Poleko and Soup Momo; lamb, rice, and chicken dumplings are certainly their specialty. I've gone to Base Camp about three times and not once did I have a bad experience. This used to be a favorite standby for takeout. We LOVED the tikka masala and the chicken saag. However, after reheating the last carryout at home (and sadly only after eating some of the meal), we discovered what appeared to be worms which looked a lot like rice but upon careful examination had segmented bodies, clearly showing they were not white rice. We took pics of the worms and even brought the rest of the carryout to the owners to bring this serious issue to their attention. One of the individuals in the kitchen got VERY quiet after he took a look. However, the other one continued to deny that they were in fact worms. When we asked for a refund, he refused, saying it had to be within X # of days of the purchase, despite the photos and us bringing the food in. Instead we were given a worthless gift certificate. Why would we want to return to a restaurant that served us adulterated rice? That is really tone-deaf customer service. read more

I'll start off by saying: whatever issues Base Camp had in their service at opening have been very well resolved. I was a little concerned when I saw the initial Yelp reviews, but we had wonderful and attentive service when dining in. The food was also fantastic. We ordered the vegetable pakoras, the veggie steamed momos, the vegetable curry, garlic naan, aloo paratha, and saag paneer to go. My sister and I randomly chose this place on our way to DTW and could not have been happier with the service and food! I got the chicken tikka masala and she got the chicken chow mein. Both of us took one bite and said "this is SO good!" The restaurant was very clean and the staff was friendly. This restaurant is a beautiful restaurant with excellent service. However, the food is not that great. It seems as though the food was premade. Compared to Sherpa, the food comes out very quickly demonstrating that it's premade, not made fresh. The naan has an aftertaste. The makhani and chili chicken was bland, even though we asked for it to be medium. I wish they would take their time and make the food to order. Hopefully they'll improve their cooking. read more

Solid but not spectacular Indian and Himalayan food served in a nicely decorated place. We chose a booth over a table, and it was cozy but still comfortable for a party of four. Garlic and butter naan were both freshly baked and delicious, although at two small slices the portion size was a bit skimpy. I ordered the paneer Tikka Masala spicy, but it came out extremely mild and a bit on the lukewarm side. It did include generous chunks of paneer, though. My companion got the chow mein - it looked very fresh with plenty of noodles. Service was a bit slow and uneven - the naan came out at the same time as the main course, and our server yanked the payment tablet away from us before we could ask for the receipt. read more

Food was fine. Really terrible service. Service was insanely slow and our order came out backwards - if it ever arrived at all. Two tables that were sat after us were served a FULL meal before we even had water. I had to get up to get the attention of the server. Even after asking twice for our food it never came. We ended up canceling items because we'd been there 1.5 hours and still we were waiting on starter items. Tiki marsala - had 6 shrimp and sauce. That's it. Having never had Himalayan food before, M Bethens Jr. and I did not know what to expect. We were blown away! I can't stop thinking about the Vegetable Thukpa we had - the broth was light and so very flavorful, I can only imagine how many different spices were used to create it. We also had the Vegetable Momo and the Samosas, also delicious, followed by a rice pudding dessert. M Bethens Jr. previously never liked rice pudding, but is a new convert thanks to Base Camp. We split the two apps and the dessert, and had individual Thukpas. It was plenty of food and we ended up bringing home some of the Thukpa, which was perfect the next day. Unlike some soups with pasta, these noodles did NOT absorb the broth :). The restaurant was simple, but clean and pleasant and service was attentive. I can't wait to go back and try some more vegetarian and vegan items! Note: the online menu had more offerings than the printed menu. I hope that management will be able to make an insert for their printed menus (I understand it's probably expensive to reprint them) or at least let customers know to look online before ordering. I was a bit worried after reading yelp reviews that dinged service. That was not an issue for us at our 5:30 pm Sunday dinner. We were seated immediately, brought water and orders were taken soon after. We got vegetable pakora with 2 dipping sauces (delish), then naan and sag paneer and lamb curry dish. Lamb could have been more tender, but A+ flavor. Sag paneer was yummy. Both came with large serving of basmati rice. We also got veg momo, steamed. I did not care for the momo filling, my wife loved it. This was way too much food, and we packed up lots to take home. We will be back! read more
