Currently passing through Iowa and had a pizza craving and saw that Need Pizza was highly rated, so I wanted to try it. I ordered an individual (8") pie for pick up with red sauce, sausage, and bacon; I also ordered the Garlic Cheese Bread. A little bias here; I grew up in NYC . I tried the pizza first and it was pretty good. The sausage and bacon tasted great, the cheese was ok like normal shredded mozzarella, and the crust had a nice soft crunch. Only drawbacks were that the dough was a little chewy and it didn't have much sauce in it. The sauce that I did taste, was just tomato sauce; a missed opportunity. Overall good pizza but could use a little something. Then I had the Garlic Cheese Bread which was good but didn't expect the size to be so big; saving some for tomorrow. NOW... the dipping pizza sauce that came with the bread... soo good! Idk if it's the same sauce that supposed to go on the pizza, but the sauce on the pizza did not taste like the dipping sauce. Need Pizza... I highly recommend using the dipping sauce on the pizza lol. I started dipping my slices in there and the slice was soo much better! If that is the pizza sauce, you need to put some more on your pizza's. Take it from a New Yorker, the sauce makes the pizza! read more

Thought it was a cool spot to kick it. I got my food to go but from what I could tell from the short time I was there: cool ambience & friendly staff. I wish I got a picture but the bar looked cool, they had fridges that the taps came out of. That's a first time seeing that. The food as also good, I got the portobello mushroom appetizer ($10) and a small Caesar salad with chicken ($9). The quality and taste were great but I don't know if the mushrooms were worth $10. They were kind of small and I'm not sure if the stuffed crab dip had much crab in it (maybe 2 or 3 had noticeable crab). But aside from the below average portion sizing, I would still come back but order something else instead of the mushrooms. read more

Sorry to say, did not snap a picture before we ate, but really had a good pizza. They have pizza, which is amazing but they have now added cauliflower crust pizza. It was very tasty. I would suggest getting a side of red sauce, as it could have used a bit more. It was very good. I am happy to see that more places are jumping into the low cal /keto type of wagon. read more

I was looking for a place in CR to grab some craft beer and eat dinner. I had heard good things about Need Pizza so decided to give it a shot. Need Pizza is located in downtown CR. I love that they are trying to revitalize the downtown area. It reminds me a lot of what is happening in Des Moines. Walked in a settled onto a stool at the bar. Decor is interesting. The back wall behind the bar is lined with old 50's era refrigerators and the beer taps come out of them. Really cool. A few TVs behind the bar for your viewing pleasure. I wanted something completely different so I went with a clam and bacon personal pizza. Instead of going with red sauce I went with the olive oil and garlic option. It was phenomenal. The salt from the bacon and clams combined with the garlic, it was divine. I would go back again and again for that pizza alone. Craft beer selection was really good. Plenty of taps and this particular weekend they had some leftovers from a Big Grove Brewing tap takeover so that was right in my wheelhouse. I like places that don't stick to just the standard crafts and instead get a little wild with their offerings. Great place, we stopped by on the final leg of our road rip, driving from St Louis to Minneapolis, and really enjoyed it! Crust is super-thin, and toppings are generous and delicious. We ordered two smalls - mushrooms/kalamata and bacon/pineapple. With over 30 beers on tap and over 20 bottled beers, this is a clear win for a beer lover. Excellent pizza! The crust is thin and delicious with a nice crunchy crust. This is my new go-to pizza place in Cedar Rapids. There is a good craft beer selection and the wine is pretty good as well. I'd recommend that they switch to fresh grated Parmesan cheese instead of little packets they provide but that isn't a deal breaker for me. I also ordered a side salad along with my pizza and that was fresh and satisfying. I got the personal cheese pizza and my husband got a 12 inch meat pizza. Both were perfection. It's been a few since we've been here. Need pizza has greatly improved since. Their pizza is as delicious as ever and this is the only pizza place near or far, offering truly vegan options. They increased their vegan topping options and offer either tomato or creamy sauce. I went with creamy the 1st time and love it. Sizes are generous and the server was well versed on vegan/vegetarian options. Again, the only pizza place around where you can go with a big crowd of carnivores, make them happy, and not starve being the only vegan amongst them. And the beer was pretty good too. A passable venue, at least front-of-house, to meet with friends, throw back some craft beer at a decent price and combine weird ingredients, but the pizza is lackluster. Never go to the back seating area if you can help it. It's supposed to be a family area like a Chuck E Cheese, but has the ambience of a tiny school cafeteria + a pinball machine. This is regarding a trip to Need Pizza back in early December. I wrote a review on Facebook, but hadn't got around to "Yelping" until recently. Had heard from coworkers for a long time how great this establishment was. But for whatever reason, I never really got around to going downtown and actually checking it out for myself. What a huge mistake that ended up being. I went with a buddy of mine and we were greeted and sat kindly and quickly -- great start. The server was prompt on coming to our table and getting our drinks -- also very friendly. The menu says a large feeds 4 or more people, but I know from experience that some places like to exaggerate on their sizes a little bit so my buddy and I decided to go ahead and get it anyway. Ended up ordering a large white chicken, bacon, & mashed potato pie. The wait for the pizza itself was relatively minimal, also another check in the positive column. But at first, I thought our server was taking the pizza to a different table around us, because he was carrying a MASSIVE sheet pan.Sure enough, he came to our table and dropped it off and my jaw hit the floor. Pizza was fantastic. Great thickness (it's a thin crust), great flavors, not cheap on the topping, and if I didn't mention it before... the thing was HUGE. Great value, overall, considering what you end up paying, in my opinion. I see in other reviews that people say that you can surely get a better pizza in Chicago or other large city -- I strongly disagree. Chicago is mostly known for it's deep dish, but when I was there, I tried FOUR different well known pizza places and I would take Need over all of them. Big-city pizza is overrated. You can find amazing pie in Cedar Rapids, and Need is proof of that. A small side note -- the atmosphere is very relaxing and "chill". Just a great place to be, sit, and relax. The ONLY, minor "complaint" I would have is that the menu is written so that you kind of put together and build your own pizza. They typically run one special at a time, which kinda sucks for people like me who love to try new things but aren't all that creative. SO if you've already had the special or it doesn't appeal to you much, you are on your own and kind of just throwing stuff on a pizza that you hope ends up tasting good together. But as I mentioned, that's a very small detail. If you've been waiting to go to Need like I did for so long... Stop waiting! You won't regret it. read more

The pizza was good. The service was much better. The crust was tasty but what I noticed was that they're wasn't a lot of toppings. I ordered a personal pan pizza with four toppings. One of the toppings I ordered was sauerkraut , I could barely tell that it had any on the pizza. The other toppings were equally scarce. Overall, the taste was okay. The red sauce was good. I love pizza and I believe even bad pizza is okay pizza. This was not bad pizza, but it could have been much better. There is a saying in pizza that if you can't make a cheese pizza well then you shouldn't make pizza. Need Pizza can make a good cheese pizza. The crust is thin with a little bubble crust. It maintains its crispiness with toppings and quite frankly is one of the best crusts I have ever had. The sauce is very good. I wish they put a little more on it. That being said, just ask for a little more. They have a white sauce (I have not had), a traditional and a bbq. The bbq is good enough to eat as a side. The ordering format is build your own and you pay per topping. They have suggestions for you and their suggestions are good. They do have mashed potatoes as an option. You can tell the potatoes are real and provide a different texture to the pizza (It is not a scoop of potatoes heaped on pizza). They also have a flavorful sausage that should be tried. The service is very good and drinks were kept full. They have alcohol and TV's and they were on sports (I was there at lunch) with sports hard to come by. The pizza was so good! I ordered a vegetarian one with 5 toppings. It was an individual size but could have fed 2 people. I ordered a side salad that was huge. The balsamic vinaigrette was some of the best I've had. I had been out on a long walk before I went in and was hot and thirsty. Rich was so kind. He ordered my food for me and then brought a tall glass of ice water for me to drink while I waited on my to go order. I had a pleasant conversation with him. What a great addition to downtown Cedar Rapids! As a native I'm always excited to try new spots. I had heard lots of great things about Need Pizza and thought I'd give it a try. Amazing!! They have New Haven style pizza, which is a thin crust and a delicious tasting crust. We had pepperoni with their red sauce, and by far some of the best pepperoni pizza I've had! They have many other sauces and ingredients to add, as you make your own! Their salad looked great also, and their beer list is very extensive. Lots of local/Iowa craft beer to choose from! Way to support local! They also have some sandwiches on the menu and a few other items! Their staff was kind and the place itself is neat! Pizza pizza pizza. Holy pepperoni this place is good. We walk in, and right away we were greeted by friendly staff that found us a table. The interior was really interesting and engaging, with old refrigerators along with great lighting. The overall atmosphere was really welcoming. Of coarse we ordered the massive large pizza, which came to our table at a good speed. The pizza looked as good as it tasted. The crust, the sauce, the cheese, and the rest of the pizzas anatomy blended together perfectly. I would give this pizza a whopping nine out of 10. I highly recommend Need Pizza, I've already returned, and plan to keep returning. In conclusion this great eatery has great service, great food, and great leftovers for those who can't conquer the large pizza (still have yet to accomplish). I cannot rave enough about Need Pizza, seriously its my favorite restaurant in Cedar Rapids, hands down. I love the decor of the place (the bar has old, vintage refrigerators that have been repurposed into beer taps and there is tons of art from local, Iowan artists on the walls). Even when its been very busy in this place, the service has always been excellent, something I find to be very rare in Iowa in general. The pizza is wood-fired, with a nice, crispy crust. I tend to like pan pizza the best, but their thin crust is absolutely delicious so I don't mind that its the only option. Their large pizza is GIGANTIC, seriously, its on a full baker's sheet and covers the entire thing. But...the thing I love most of about Need Pizza is that they offer vegan cheese and don't make you pay what is known as the "vegan tax." "Vegan Tax" for those who don't know, is when you make substitutions, like ordering things with out meat and replacing with a veggie option and they end up charging you more for what actually ends up costing them less in the long run. It makes absolutely no sense and I'm so glad that Need doesn't nickel and dime us. Thanks Need for making the best pizza, having the most diverse selection of Iowa beers, and for all of the absolutely wonderful dining out experiences I have had since you opened up.
