I had 5 more minutes before we had to leave, so I went up to ask for a box and when I did the manager told me no. So I asked "are you serious?" and he rudely said yes and said step away from the counter and shooed me away and then proceeded to ignore me when I stepped away. To preface I was already at least 5 feet away from the counter. I then just walked away and told the security guard what happened and he was just as confused, then they had the other security guard asked the manager and they said they had the safe open, first off how was I supposed to know that, second why are you opening the safe if PAYING customers are still in the store. There are tons of options to satisfy vegetarians or your creative side. Each slice runs around $4 a piece and there can be a huge line on a Friday night. I ordered a 20 inch specialty pizza that was half veggie delight and half pulled pork cinnamon Apple which was sweet and delicious!! TLDR: good drunk or sober. It might be my favorite pizza place in Iowa city. Classic late night downtown Iowa city post bar food. But, even when sober this pizza is fantastic. You won't find any of your "normal" slices but instead get pizza types such as gyro, Southwest, Mac and cheese, etc. Slices are warmed up in their oven in front of you. I went with a pulled pork-apple-cinnamon slice, and also got to sample a variety of others. My slice was so interesting and tasty, and my other favorites were the sausage-gravy-biscuit and mac-and-cheese slices. After a brief survey you choose one ( or two if hungry). They throw it in the oven for 3-5 minutes and bam, you have a slice of melt in your mouth goodness to enjoy. Before you know it, your slice is gone, then you wish you had that second, or if you thought ahead, you start into your second. By the time you are done, your are stuffed, but happy as you sit back and finally notice the strange artwork on the walls. Got to give a lot of love to a place that is willing to throw anything under the Sun on my pizza. Our favorite thus far has been the pulled pork in onion rings over BBQ sauce. The standards are always solid, but seriously you can't stop at this place and not get something a little bit exciting on your pizza. Bacon, cheese burgers, fries, avocado, kalamata olives, feta, and just about anything else you can imagine will grace the pie if you desire. Perhaps our favorite thing about it is the fact that you can get a half and half pizza with half cheese and pepperoni and half specialty for about five bucks less than a specialty pizza. You make sure that the kiddos have something they like and that Mom and Dad get to experiment a little bit. There's a little bit of room to sit in here, and the place is abnormally long physically. The walls are graced with a bunch of art the reminds me of something from an old school Ghostbusters movie. Some art from bands and what I believe is a local photographer also graces the wall. Not really my dick, but it's nice to see that they're supporting folks in the area. All in all, this place is legit. Really good pizza with a lot of different options and while it's a little bit more expensive then the stuff you order at a chain, it's well worth the extra to support a local spot and get something that you couldn't get elsewhere. read more

You walk to the front, look at your options, and then ask the friendly person behind the counter what the slice you're interested in is comprised of. They heat it in the oven and within minutes you're eating a hot slice of specialty pizza. You don't come to Mesa for a traditional pizza with cheese, marinara, and potentially some sort of meat topping. You come to Mesa for a unique pizza experience and a place where everyone can find something. Some of my personal favorites are: pesto, pesto tortellini, mac and cheese, chicken cordon bleu, and chicken pesto. Mesa rocks. I've had two separate experiences at Mesa pizza that make me firm in my belief that the managerial operations of this business are an absolute dumpster fire. I'll provide the TLDR at the top for those who don't care to read it all. TLDR; The manager/owner of Mesa is a piece of shit. Seemingly doesn't view his customers as humans. Experience 1: A few years back I went to Mesa with a group of people after an Iowa football game and the restaurant was pretty busy, so the wait to get up to the counter and was about 25 mins. As I was nearing the counter to order, all of the sudden the whole restaurant got kind of quiet and I hear small gasps of disbelief. I turn around and see one of the customers slumped over in their chair vomiting all over the floor. This person was also in a group of people, and one of them quickly went up to the front counter to inform the staff what was happening and to, I assume, get a mop to clean up the mess. The staff refused to clean up the mess or at the least provide a mop. The person who informed them about the incident ended up getting paper towels from the restroom to clean up their friend's mess with their hands. Experience 2: A few months ago (pre-Rona) my boyfriend and I went to Mesa pretty late after a night out at the bars to grab some pizza to-go. We are at the counter picking out which slices to get (as there are many different types of slices throughout the counter), and the staff person behind the counter puts them in the oven immediately after we pick them out. As we were finishing up placing our order, we couldn't quite remember how many we had picked out. Not being able to physically see the slices already in the oven, my boyfriend says something along the lines of "ok, I think we have 4 slices" and the person behind the counter quickly snaps back "NO, you have 5 slices!". My boyfriend and I are taken aback by how rude the staff person but continue on through the line towards the register to pay. My boyfriend mentions to me how he has been overcharged for his pizza before, and then we continue chatting about our evening. Now this is where it gets wild, gaydies and gentlethems. We get up to the counter, paid for the pizza with a credit card, got a receipt, went to collect our pizza when all of the sudden, a man from the back comes out and tells us "Do we have a problem here?". The man proceeds to use physical force to snatch the box of pizza away from my boyfriend -- the pizza we had already paid for. He tells the cashier, "We need to do a refund." He gives my boyfriend a refund receipt. Completely embarrassed and dumbfounded by what just happened, we leave Mesa without the pizza we had already paid for, and return home hungry and mentally exhausted. My boyfriend went to Mesa the following Monday morning to speak to the owner and ensure that the refund was executed as the funds had not been returned to the account yet. The owner piled on the disrespect, stating that he will always take the employees side no matter what, because he deals with drunk people too often and cannot take the customers word for it. Needless to say, never going back to Mesa and I make sure to tell everyone that asks what a shit pile this establishment is. Don't expect to feel welcome once you walk in the doors. read more

I used to go here frequently when I was still a student at UI. Lunch time or late at night, Mesa pizza always satisfied that craving! The people working there are patient and always nice, answering all of the questions on which pizza is that and which pizza is this. They are really good at recommending new pizzas for me too! They have a wide variety (usually 10-14 options) of vegetarian, chicken and other meat varieties. Their Mac & Cheese pizza is the best I've ever had. It only takes a couple minutes for the slice of your choice to come out warm and with just the right level of crispiness! Due to their pricing structure, I recommend buying pizza by the slice rather than whole pizzas. Their pricing for whole pizzas needs to be reevaluated. Went to this place with my daughter. We were in line for 30 minutes. Security office asked if my daughter was vaping. She want then someone came up and said he saw saw her vaping and told us to get the fuck out of his store. He was aggressive and embarrassed us. There was no vaping from us at all and even the security guard said he did not see her vaping. He pushed us out the door and was absolutely horrible and bullying.
