I had come from gardening and tending to a very small apartment sized patio to a much larger backyard with this project --- so I really appreciated Farmscape's expertise in native California plants. I would not have been able to select these plants on my own without their help & expertise. As first time home owners, we interviewed at least 6-7 landscaping companies. Annethe was referred…read moreby a landscaping company we found on Yelp. She took all the measurements couple of times herself, both front and back. She said she has calculated how much material would be needed as well as how much it would cost us. Her contract states that we have 6 months warranty for plants and 2 year warranty for all hardscaping installed. She has also agreed to be on site for a total of 3-4 days for a maximum of 5 hrs at $150/daily. Annethe's "first team" (total of 6 workers) lead by Miguel (who Annethe confirmed doesn't have any license), came out and worked on both front and back yards. She told us she will be responsible for the hardscaping, referencing the 2 year warranty should anything go wrong. The first two days were kind of slow and slacking. At one point, they were just sitting there doing nothing but talking for 3 hours. I had called Annethe and told her about this as well. Moving forward, there was so much hassle with her first team. 1. There was no proper/not enough equipment. We had to lend some of our own gardening tools for them to use. 2. No coordination between Annethe and her team lead by Miguel. 3. Annethe has told us she has done work for Altadena, Pasadena, Monrovia and surrounding cities. She brought her own dumpster (which includes drop off and pick up fees, which we of course paid). Mind you, we are new to the area and we didn't know we had to go with Athens, which the city was contracted to. If my husband wasn't at home that day to talk to the city workers who came out to our house and asked them for more time, we could have been fined. 4. She overcharged us for materials. We ended up having to get rid of more than half of the decomposed granite. Not only that, Miguel was refusing to do any clean up because it was not part of his agreement. In the end, he had to clean up the mess; otherwise he would have not been paid. Our yards were complete the fifth day. Two weeks went by and the dg hasn't set. We called Annethe before July 4, 2018 to have her come take a look. She did come out and agreed there was not enough glue in the DG. My initial understanding is that we paid for "stabilized DG". Annethe sent her "second team", lead by Edgar. Edgar's team came out and cleaned up the excess dg and told us that there was way too much dg. He said it was not done properly and he confirmed that the dg used was not stabilized dg. This is her team that she sent out to us, we have never done business with Edgar before. But imagine if you're own team confirms to your client that what they paid for was not what they got...How upsetting would that be??!! A properly designed and installed dg does not encourage weed growth. In reality if you look at our yard, it is pretty much a like a sand box. We've been pulling out weed until we couldn't do it anymore. The flagstones laid in the pathway are raised up whereas the correct way it should have been leveled with the pea gravel that was installed. The bender boards are supposed to act as barriers for dg not to spill into the pathway as well as the pea gravel not to spill into the dg. The benders boards are also being uprooted from the ground. When we contacted Annethe again on July 16, 2018, she said she cannot fix it because she already used the last funds of the money to fix our yard the second time we contacted her. This past weekend, we gave it another try in contacting her. Today, September 30, 2018 marks 4 months and we still have 20 months left on the warranty, so much for said warranty. A very huge disappointment for us. Annethe refuses her mistakes. She drew out the contract herself and said the hardscaping only covers the dg, not other materials. But when we pointed out in her contract stated warranty covers all hardscaping, she contacted her lawyer to have help confirming the difference between hardscaping and softscaping. What kind of landscaping company does that? There is difference between hardscaping and softscaping. We know how to use Google too so we did due diligence to help you. Hardscape and softscape are complete opposites of each other, yet both are necessary to make a landscape fully functional. (In our case, it was beyond dysfunctional). Hardscape is the hard stuff in your yard; concrete, blocks, stones, gravel, decompose granite. Softscape is the soft, growing stuff, like perennials, shrubs, succulents, trees. Softscape is living, hardscape is not. My husband and I have decided to share our unpleasant experience in details on Yelp to help others, particularly to new home owners and who are on a low budget to avoid the frustrations, the outrageous and costly experience & dishonesty brought to us by Annethe & her team. I don't like to write such reviews but she left me no choice and besides I don't want others to go through the same thing I did. I do wanna help potential customers to be cautious and aware of such contractors. Let me start with their lack of proper equipments, inexperienced crew and lack of organization and communication among Annethe and her team. What kind of landscaping company doesn't have a proper vehicle like a decent-size truck to drop off and pick up materials even for a small yard like my house's yard( 700 sf)! What kind of landscaping company ends up with more than twice excessive materials after their so called proper measurements?!? Even when I told Annethe that her estimate of DG materials and gravels are way over what we need for such small yard! Besides, She and her team claims they know how to install stablized DG which is supposed to look hard and stable rarher than soft like a sand box that can get blown away by a breeze and moved away by steps. See the attached pictures , anyone can easily tell how awful the job had been done. What kind of so called legitimate and experienced landscaping company breaks the city rules and puts a gigantic dumpster (good size for landscaping of entire block!) in the middle of the street w/o city's permission. I saved her and her contractor by asking the city representatives to allow a couple of hours for the dumpster to be removed before they decided to tow the dumpster and fine Annethe's company and her contractor and probably me!! My list of complaints is long... Let me tell you one thing that there won't be any support or customer service after she is sort of done with the job in particular when she did it in a very wrong way. She doesn't even honor her own contract and warranty. I don't trust a word out of her mouth since she keeps changing her own words and promises! Hope you won't have such terrible experience with a landscaping company.

After about a $4000 investment in plans they had the audacity to quote a project for a 1500 sq foot front yard at $148,000. Yes, you read that correctly. It is not that I am cheap, in fact, I did spend $197,000 doing the backyard (with another contractor) which included a whole pool redo, new hot tub, BBQ, pergola etc.. Kate Anne Designs however, was doing no major structural changes. Just what I would consider basic stuff - replacing driveway, placing a small retaining wall with driveway gate. Xeriscaping the small front yard, two yard gates and a front porch redo. Even if the wall cost $50,000 and the driveway $15,000 - that leaves $83,000 for front yard xeriscaping - two olive trees, ficus trees, artificial turf, decorative rock, pavers etc. Not sure what the quality would be like, I have no reason to believe it would be bad. They were pleasant and professional. They did say at the outset that they do jobs that are billed over $50,000 - which was ok with me, just not $98,000 over $50,000 for a small front yard - everyone I have shared this with is shocked, don't want you to be shocked either :)
