Campsite Takeover!! It started when we arrived at our campsite #6 to find people already camped out and having lunch. We kindly informed them that they were in our campsite and would have to relocate. With some hesitation they finally moved, awkward to say the least. We didn't let that rain on our parade and enjoyed the day. The 2nd full day of camping we decided to have lunch at the Neal's diner across the street. After lunch we returned to our campsite to find at least 8 people setting up camp bringing out tables and cots right next to our campsite #6 obstructing the path way to the bridge (which is not at all a campsite). I looked at the tag they had in their truck and it was a day pass which said for a "fam of 4". We packed up and informed the front office of the situation and asked what are their regulations on day passes. They told us "that the day pass people are not suppose to be in the campgrounds" yet there they were. No one or no signs are down in the camp grounds informing people that camp grounds are only for campers only. Day pass people and people from Neal's off site properties are coming down to the camp grounds and setting up shop for the day with no regards for the people that have actually paid for a campsite. read more

The food at the Dinning room calls to us (sure could use a chicken fried steak special or a burger right now) The family atmosphere and the amazing customer service can't be beat. We've been going to Neal's for years and sorry to say we won't again. I was with a party of 17 and rented two huge cabins. We wrote our concerns to the owner that included: 1. Filthy and scorpion infested cabins (one of us were stung) 2. Dirty dishes in cabinets 3. Cleaning crews that are unfamiliar with cleaning 4. Broken appliances and outlets that shocked one of us 5. My family have been going to the Frio and staying at Neal's for over 20 years, and next year we will not be returning. Every place you stay has problems no matter how fancy the place, something can always go wrong. Over the time we have stayed, the river has gone from family friendly and peaceful to crowded and loud, mostly at the places where it is deep for people to stop and play. The cabin we always stay in has the best access to the swimming hole as well as the music blasting from conflicting speakers of river goers. When the septic, which is close, has problems, you can smell the aroma from the cabin. This has been an issue at least once during our stay over the last few years. Don't get me wrong, I have loved this place with all its faults. You just need to know going in that this isn't a five-star hotel. The best times to be there are when others are working and it's not so crowded. To me when I think of heaven, this is it. Relaxing in the water watching children play is so much fun. For the party I am with, the changes have been too much; and to retain the image of heaven we will be leaving. I hope you enjoy your stay at this rustic place. Snotty people stay clear, we don't need y'all putting a bad name on this generational tradition amongst hundreds of families. Cost is great for the experience. It's camping, don't expect the Hilton. You got everything you need, especially if you read what they offer and bring the rest to prepare. It also has the BEST swimming hole on the Frio, hands down! The staff was very friendly. The store had everything you need. We were tent camping at site 3 and it was absolutely amazing. We had an easy access to the water right off of our tent site and not far from our spot was where all the stuff was happening. The water slide and jumping rock were great! They also had golf carts available for rent and the dance at joe jimmys! It was definitely a vacation to remember and we plan on making this an annual trip! read more

The tubing was nice as well as the customer service. However, the lodging is pitiful, especially for the price.. The mattress was old and extremely uncomfortable with a huge sinking hole in the middle. The condo was not very clean and we got to listen to the upstairs residence run around until 2 am each night. We just stayed a few days in a cabin. The good: it was clean, and the back patio was nice. The bad: the beds were WAY too small for an average size couple -BUT would have been an ok size for 1 small kid or a tiny couple, in addition, it was extremely uncomfortable. This place is one that I will NEVER come back to nor will I recommend to ANYONE . My birthday weekend was completely ruined! Our "cabin" had so many issues and looked as if it hadn't been kept up with in a very long time. The door couldn't even be opened and shut without putting ALL your weight behind it. I'm talking full on shoulder or hip into the door to get it to budge. My 5 year old couldn't even open or close it himself. & It didn't even lock! Their was a gap at the top that bugs kept flying in thru all night! The fridge door was broken and the light inside didn't even work. The AC shut off every few hours and had to be reset. Which brings me to my next point, the photos on their website must have been taken YEARS ago! Very misleading!! On top of the sub-par accommodations Neals Lodges has HORRIBLE customer service & the most rude staff I've ever dealt with! Do not stay here if you are expecting anything more than sub-par everything!! Cannot comprehend all the 5 star reviews of this place! I was told by their manager, Thea, that she was NOT even the slightest bit sorry I was told completely incorrect information over the phone when i reserved our cabin 3 weeks prior to our stay. On top of the rude "manager" I also dealt with a very RUDE male staff member at the pool the same day. When I went to speak to Thea about it her 'excuse' for his behavior was that he was a "redneck" and that's just the way he comes across and she wasn't sorry about how my family was treated. REALLY?! Lack of manners and rudeness are acceptable at this place if you are a "redneck" I guess....ridiculous! We were told by this abrasive male staff member that we needed to leave the pool area immediately and we couldn't use the pool at the condos (Neals Lodges own the condos and the cabins we were staying at) even though I was told during the reservation process that was an amenity they offered and that my 5 year old would "love the small slide at the pool". Now let me say I would completely understand us being asked to leave if there were tons of people and they just couldn't allow extra people to use the pool BUT there was NO ONE at the pool. I mean It was COMPLETELY empty as was the ENTIRE condo complex! Yet we were treated as if we were breaking their 'rules' on purpose even after I explained I was told during reservation that we could use the pool. We had no idea they had "rules" restricting people staying in cabins to only using the river access and not the pool at the condos. Should have listened to our friends who told us this place was a bad choice & that they had a bad experience last year here. We went to their cabin at a near by place and the difference in accommodations was insane for the exact same price! Lesson learned. Don't make my same mistake. read more

My friends and I have been going out to Neal's Lodges twice a year for about 9 years now and we always have a great time there. The owners are awesome, the cabins are nice, and the scenery is beautiful. We've never floated before, but Neal's has a hefty number of tubes for rent. The front office has a general store that stocks an impressive selection of essentials. They have everything from milk and eggs, to dish sponges and firewood. Neal's is on the Frio River, and many of the cabins are situated along the canyon heading down, so the views are spectacular. Massive old trees canopy the area, and huge boulders (great for sunbathing) line the water. This place is pure Texas at its finest. The time we spend there is lazy and relaxing. read more

We stayed the weekend for the river rally, and we're so displeased with the high priced accommodations. The room hadn't been cleaned since sometime ago that it was built. Black mold all in the shower. TV was behind the bed? Coffee mugs had leftover coffee from prior occupant from some time ago The whole room was just disgusting Breakfast was great and the people were great but for the money I would never stay here again or recommend it. Spent 4 nights at cabin CH, this place rocks! Overall, from start to finish, all my dealing with Neal's were great. They were very helpful in answering my questions before registering, and then when I finally got a reservation I was pleased to hear I could upgrade up to a bigger cabin if available and desired. Nice to have to option to recruit a bigger party. Pricing was also very nice, I got in the week before Memorial Day so I got 20% off. They also don't have other random fees, no cleaning junk, etc. I didn't even pay a deposit. Check in was a breeze. Show up, give them car info and waivers and got keys, directions, and river parking passes for our cars, no problemo! The cabin itself was wonderful, ours was more out of the way and secluded, but was nice and close to the river. For 4-6 people, CH may be the perfect cabin I think. It has 3 doubles and one single bed. The windy staircase to the loft with beds is a bit treacherous :) Everything was clean, the shower was nice, kitchen well equipped (there was much more supplies in it than I expected) with fridge, microwave, oven, double sink, etc. The beds were very comfortable, I slept quite well. In fact, I just laid a sheet down and used the comforter as a blanket, it appeared to be freshly washed. The path down to the river was nice and connected to a Neal's road that lead up to their riverfront cabins and right by the swimmin' hole. We went over there a lot! Also, up the road is cabin EH, which wasn't being used, but was quite nice looking from what we saw. And it has a viewing deck that we sat on a couple nights to stargaze and such, very nice! All in all this was a great trip. Neal's is doing a lot of improvements, etc from the looks of it, so I look forward to seeing how they develop. Their little store was also handily stocked, we were able to get eggs, milk, coal, syrup, batter mix, etc that we didn't bring. They had plenty of grocery stuff! I absolutely love this place! Yes, some of the cabins are old. The place has been around since the '20s. The furniture is functional, not fabulous, but if you want fabulous, go stay somewhere that charges twice as much and doesn't have the BEST SWIMMING HOLE EVER! Neal's always has a place to swim, even after a year long drought, when the rest of the river is down to rocks. The new owners have added live music several nights a week, a dance floor, and a family friendly "icehouse" and snack counter. Lots of kids running around while parents enjoyed a cold beer before the short walk back to the cabin. Each cabin has a kitchenette and a bath, plenty of privacy, ice cold AC, coffee maker, utensils, fridge, microwave, etc. Everything you need, and none of the stuff you can't live without. No phone, limited internet access, but this is standard for this part of rural Texas. The cafe has typical diner food, it's hot, it's good, and there is plenty of it. The dinner rolls are amazing, order extra. The back porch has a beautiful view, best place to have coffee in the morning. The store has fresh produce, meat, milk, eggs, groceries, and all the other stuff you forgot to pack. So what else can you do here? Birdwatching, bat flights just down the road, Garner State Park down the road with a nightly dance during the summer, plus mini golf. Hiking, great motorcycle rides through Leakey on the Twisted Sisters, just sitting around doing nothing, board games with the kids, ice cream from the store / office, meeting people from all over, not listening to the phone ring, cooking out on the grill, seeing stars at night, spending time being a family. Going for a drive that turns into an adventure and ending up in Utopia at the Lost Maples Cafe. Scenery. Did I mention the great people that live and work here? I can't wait to go back.... read more

The one bad experience was that our fireplace which we needed to keep warm didn't vent, but the staff was quick to upgrade us to one with a great fireplace and extra space. Ive been going to Neal's for almost 20 years now, so obviously I love the place. Cabins are rustic and basic - but you don't go to Neal's for luxury. I love that every cabin has a firepit - we always use ours - and I think they are now stocking each cabin w/ firewood when you arrive - score! This was the first time for me to take my son and it was great - swimming hole was perfect as usual - even in this drought. Online booking will be great when its up and running. Wasn't able to make it to the new bar area, but hope to next year. There have been some other little changes - including a check in drink - this was awesome - Neal's is the kind of place where you hate to see change, but these are for the better. We rented one of the smaller cabins. The property map online gives the impression that the cabins are far away from the highway, but they are not. Our cabin is almost right on the highway. The rooms are filthy, beds are horrible and make a lot of noise when you move, not to mention uncomfortable, Our room has no heating, no light by the BBQ grill and so on, would not recommend it. I would like to thank the folks at Neal's Lodges for making sure our friends & family weekend was amazing! I'm sure all of our bunch wasn't the easiest to check in but Thea and the girls did an amazing job! We stayed in one of the 5 bedroom lodges and upon our arrival everything was sparkling clean and ready for our arrival. They even had the A/Cs turned down so our rooms would be cooled down in this super hot Texas Heat! The lodges are all well appointed and even had 2 coffee makers and a blender for our large group! There are plenty of pots, pans and dishes to accommodate our large group of 18 and the massive meals we made! We felt right at home!! Both kids and adults enjoyed swimming in the pool, spent the day down at the river and enjoyed the beautiful sunsets that South Texas has to offer. MARIJUANA FOUND IN CONDO. Our first night in our condo with Neal's we found a plate of marijuana, an illegal drug in the state of Texas. We brought this to the attention of the staff at Neal's. Their response was to send a cleaning crew out to the condo to clean the room where the marijuana was found again. The crew came and took a pair of shoes and shorts that were left under the bed but no further cleaning was performed. I realize that there is a virus going around and that me and my family are taking a risk by coming to this facility, but I also EXPECT businesses to do their part by sanitizing and leaving the place clean. There was also a knife with peanut butter on it in one of the drawers in the kitchen. I expected the OWNER to contact me after multiple attempts to contact her. I felt as though my deposit reimbursement was not unreasonable considering the fact that I FOUND WEED IN ONE OF HER PROPERTIES. The owner made no effort to apologize or contact me about this matter. We wanted a FAMILY vacation but felt that these violations showed us that Neal's is not a suitable place to bring your family. I'm just thankful a baby did not find the plate of marijuana and ingest it. read more

So I've have been invited on a family vacation with a part family for the last three years. And we've come to Neals each year. However this past trip WILL BE OUR LAST. They actually have been doing this for I think 7 years. Now I've absolutely loved being at the river and with my family the first two years. This year was another story. Nearly half of us (7 of 15) caught some stomach bug. My cousin was stung by one of three scorpions we found in the house. And to top it off after our return my family contacted the proclaimed owner/general manager Thea Davenport, to simply inform her that there was a live virus in the home. Her response was dismissive and defensive. Not what I would expect from a "manager" when the issue is the health and well being of your customers. I just have to warn families who are planning to go to take care and be cautious cause Neals won't. read more

Our family has been visiting Neal's for nearly 30 yrs and have made many wonderful memories. Sadly this will be our last year staying here due to the horrible service, extremely rude management, and outrageous prices. The cabins are no longer kept clean, need binoculars to see the tv, prices for tube rentals are ridiculous, and the management and staff are flat out rude. My friend and I went to Concan to look for two bird species, the Black-capped Vireo and the Golden-cheeked Warbler. We asked the women at the front desk where we could see these species. They claimed to have never heard of either species (despite the fact that there was a VENT tour staying there), but they said that if we paid them $5 each, that they would give us a map and we could go on the property. This all sounded really shady, so my friend and I went over to the table to discuss whether this made sense or not. Lo and behold, the visitor register was on the table and it said that Cabin 61 was the place to see these birds. We asked the women where Cabin 61 was, and they said that it wasn't their cabin. They again asked for $5 for a map, and they wouldn't tell us where this place was. Come to find out, Cabin 61 is owned by the family that used to own Neal's. We went across the river and gave them our $10 instead and had the birds. Even though I wasn't a customer there, how they treat people who aren't customers matters, and I left feeling like the women at Neal's tried to rip me off. read more

A day spent on the river at Neal's was filled with drunken, falling over, practically stripping, loud, obnoxious, cussing, people playing inappropriate music all day. It took at least two days of numerous complaints to get these people escorted off the property. Coming to the river we understand we may run into people like this. Unfortunately this trip the water was too low for floating so we spent the day in low spot on the river in our chairs. So we couldn't just float away from them and it took hours to get anyone down to do something. Then, we went to Joe Jimmy's, where I was asked multiple times for my ID (as I am 21+) and a credit card to verify it wasn't a fake. I had my hand marked prior to entering the establishment to show I was of age and still asked many times after entering to prove my age. My boyfriend was also asked for his ID after entering, with a mark on his hand, when we were simply sitting at the table. He was having a Dr. Pepper either way, as he doesn't drink. The lady was incredibly rude, had she approached us differently rather than tapping on his shoulder fairly aggressively and demanding his ID, then asking to see his hand after checking his ID a second time, we would have been totally understanding. Then I was asked not to sit on his knee and that I needed to sit beside him because it's a family friendly establishment. Again, I get it, but we weren't doing anything wrong. Just sitting, having a conversation with my parents and minor brothers. There were other minors out there that we noticed were drinking underage and smoking, but nothing was said to them. Only the two adults sitting at the table. We definitely won't be back and with the way this establishment replies to their complaints they frankly don't care if we're back. As they told my stepdad, They're a tourist attraction, they see hundreds of people a day, the few of us don't make a difference. If I can save even one group of people from going here to have their trip ruined by crazy drunks and rude staff I believe I've done my part. I hope that Neal's makes some changes. read more

Well..... after staying with Neal's lodges for the last 7 years I will never stay there again. Our family stayed at Langtry Lodge the week of July 22-28. 7 out of 15 of us came down with a violent stomach bug. The first to get sick had not even been down to the river yet when he got sick. Upon further investigation we realized some friends of ours had stayed in that exact house the week before us. They also had 6 out of 16 of their party become violently ill. We called Neal's to let them know. When Thea Davenport- the self proclaimed owner/general manager called us back she was so dismissive. Defensive in tone and kept talking over me. I couldn't get two words in. I was not calling accusing them of wrong doing, but letting them know that there is a live virus in that house and whatever they are doing to clean It isn't working. They require guest to wash dishes and put them away or face a $50 fine. I explained they might want to ensure the dishes are washed properly and the comforters are also washed in between guest. There is a difference between wiping things down and actually disinfecting a place. But It is NO coincidence that 2 different sets of guest 2 weeks apart all came down with the same violent bug from the same house. It is a shame that management doesn't know how to listen to constructive criticism especially when the well being of their guest could be at stake. This bug is mean and could easily place someone in the hospital. There are plenty of other places to stay at on the Frio. If you're going to stay at Neal's..... Bring your own bleach and don't expect management to care that half your family became violently ill. read more

I don't know what year they took the photos for the website but they need to be updated. Better yet, they can update/clean the cabin. What they don't show are pictures of the bathroom. This place is disgusting. I appreciate that they are cabins and rustic but come on. Black mold, peeling paint, filth everywhere. YUCK! Cabin 12 was so disgusting and they told us that was an upgrade from Cabin 4 which we had originally booked. Are you kidding me? That's an upgrade?!? UGH, I can't even imagine how disgusting cabin 4 is if cabin 12 has black mold and peeling paint and filth everywhere. We went out one night to the park and laid in the grass to look at the stars and the ground was so much softer than the beds in that room. I was in the worst pain and couldn't sleep at night because the beds were so hard. We should have just saved our money and thrown blankets on the ground and slept, it would have been softer and cleaner. read more

Just came back from Neals and had an amazing time. We only stayed one night and after weeks of flack from my husband for booking CABIN 12 wothout reading the reviews first I'm happy to say the shower is fully tiled now and looks great. It is a very modest cabin but clean and close to river. I fully recommend renting a golf cart for $50. We didn't find out about them until late in the afternoon but kids still had a great time riding around. My biggest complaint wad no coffee in the cabin so be sure to pack some. Water is too low to tube, but you can find other places with more water to tube. Kids had fun at the arcade and dance. read more

I've been going to the frio river for years now but this was my first time staying at Neal's. Loved it! We stayed in one of the condos. Everything was great! The staff was very friendly, they all seem to love working there. One of the managers (josh, might be his name) even drove us down to the river himself after seeing us waiting for the shuttle. Super friendly guy. Makes me want to quit my job and work for Neal's hahaha only warning is that, like with most places they will have a wait for tubes and shuttle rides to float on busy days like Saturdays. That goes for any tube rental place though. Loved my stay here. I will definitely be coming back to Neal's next summer. Also, the owner tries to keep you updated with the river flow, especially earlier this summer when it got a lot of rain. Can't wait to come back! Thanks guys! read more

I was recommended the Lodge while going through Texas on a road trip by a colleague - and couldn't have come across a better place. While I wasn't there to float, I was able to enjoy some of the natural areas around the Lodge as well as the massive cabin I was given last second with no reservation. Not only that but I was given a great price by some of the friendliest staff I've ever met. Thank you to the women who work in the office, and I hope to return some day soon! read more
