The email exchange to set up the reservation was good and professional. The cabins and customer service were not. Their response to my feedback lacked any accountability: Thank you for letting us know. This place isn't for everyone. However, thousands love us so we will trudge on! Feedback to Neal's: We had a reservation for cabin #2 for July 13-17. I expected the cabin to be small and rustic, but I did not expect the cabin to be dirty. The floor didn't look like it had been cleaned in a while. The bedside table next to the bed on the right has a recessed design along the outer perimeter of the top that was full of dirt. The bathroom was also dirty, especially the floor behind the toilet. The AC was very loud. The bed closest to the AC unit was tilted such that the head was lower than the feet. Lastly, the customer service was lacking. In my cabin and my daughter's cabin (#3), there were nice, clean, and relatively new frigs. However, the person who installed them, hung the doors, so they opened to the bed and not the kitchen. I know for a fact that the doors could be hung either way. When I asked the door to be changed, I was told it can't be done. What that meant is that it was not going to be fixed. This seemed to be an unreasonable answer. Hopefully, y'all will make the effort to get the refrigerator doors hung correctly. My family chose to stay at Neal's' on the recommendation of my adult granddaughter, who had stayed in a 3-bedroom cabin for a number of summers with a friend and the friend's family. There is absolutely no life guards and minimal safety precautions. Staff is welcoming but I've personally heard that they are unfair to their employees and passive aggressive. Our first time camping at Neal's and we were highly impressed. We booked months ahead of time and the cabin was cheap. When we arrived at the cabin everything was clean and nice, WI-FI password available. We have camped in concan before at another property and neals offers much more. When you camp at Neal's you also get access to their swimming hole, slide, joe jimmy's, and the pond next to Neal's for fishing. Joe jimmys was a great environment and the bar has multiple options for a good drink. Staff was friendly as well and helpful. read more

We've had yearly summer vacations the last 30+ years with our family at Neal's. Prices are just right. Enough to pay for a decent cabin that keeps you out of the elements and gets you some AC for quality nights sleep. Kitchen so you can cook and keep foods cold in the fridge. An added benefit is the amazing swimming spot that offers a low area for the youngins and deeper spots with a slide and rocks to jump off for the older kids! To add they have a restaurant on site and an outdoor dance hall for the family! Such a hidden gem for those people who haven't heard or been blessed to experience it! We love Neal's! read more

My family had a little gathering here this summer and it was lovely! I was told I had actually been to Neal's when I was a kid once but couldn't remember anything specific about it. I just remembered being on the river. Fast forward 30 years or so and I thought the campground was well kept. In the back there are 3 cabins and we had them all rented out for several nights. Each cabin had 3 bedrooms with multiple beds each. 2 full bathrooms, full kitchen, living room and dining room. There were fire pits and grills out back and we could wander back and forth to each other's cabins. You can pay a $35 for sheets from Neal's which my cabin did. We brought towels and everything ourselves. The cabins were spacious and the perfect set up for us! The Frio was beautiful! We had family members that would get up early and go set up the canopies in the morning to get a prime spot on the water. By mid morning or so we were all down there chilling and playing! We had our camp chairs sitting in the river and coolers in the floats attached to the canopies. We were set for the day out there. It was relaxing and loads of fun! The kids enjoyed the water slide and jumping off the big rocks. The river was clean and clear - so beautiful! I can definitely see myself coming back here in the future! read more

They didn't price gouge during the eclipse. That alone gets them five stars in my book. HOWEVER, I cannot give 5 stars to a place that provides the cheapest sandpaper-quality toilet paper. For the few grand I spent on the lodge, they can spend a few extra pennies on making sure my butt doesn't bleed. Aside from that, the lodge was pretty well set up, the pool was nice, and we enjoyed our stay. Though when we arrived most of the dishes were poorly cleaned and three of the four cutting boards were so nasty we didn't want to use them at all. The fourth was just ok enough after a good scrubbing. They need to not rely on the previous occupants having cleaned everything adequately because clearly people don't. read more

We had so much fun here. A very memorable trip. The cabin was great. Fire pit, smoker, concrete picnic table, and wooden picnic table right outside. It's beautiful scenery during the day and so quiet and peaceful at night. We could see every star in the sky. Fellow travelers and the folks that work there were all cool. There is an awesome swimming hole and fishing spot right across the street. We're definitely going back. Try Neal's if you need a nice retreat or a real vacation. It's beautiful and lots to do. We really hated to leave as we had so much fun and there was some huge bbq event starting up that weekend. All these bbq trucks and trailers from all over started to show up on our last day. This was a great stay! This was our first time staying here and we had a so much fun. We have stayed at other places but this was by far the cleanest and nice place yet. I was a little surprised first with the price but took a chance and it paid off. The area was clean, the staff was excellent and nice and welcoming. Overall it was great stay. I know I'm being super picky here but the only drawback was the very hard beds. I totally understand the purpose for hard beds is that they last longer and for business purposes are better, but a little bit softer beds would be great after a long day at the river. Great place with recent very poor judgement... After seeing what took place in Concan over Memorial weekend, I for one am very pleased with Governor Abbott's decision to close all tubing / rafting business during this State increase of COVID pandemic. It was blatantly obvious every business in the upper Frio canyon had complete disregard for the guidelines set out by the CDC. Ignoring safe practices, only to put the bottom line ahead of health for the local community, patrons and everyone in contact with them upon return home. How many ICU beds are in Uvalde? Less than 10... Who has someone in their extended family at high risk of infection. Everyone. I understand it's a seasonal business. I have empathy for the challenges each face as business owners. Everyone is impacted. We are all affected by a large degree. That being said, renting tubes, cramming people into busses, allowing people to pile on top of each other in the river, is nothing short of complete social and societal irresponsibility. This isn't just a dig on Neal's, however Neal's is the main attraction to the area. Always has been. Please, find a way to coexist with this pandemic. Shuffle your business model. Pivot. Do it not only for the health of everyone you send on their way after they leave, but for the well being of the generations that still reside in your community. The scorpions are very respectful. This is our second year lodging with Neal's and both years I saw a scorpion in the cabin. But they seem to understand when guests arrive because I only saw a scorpion on the first night each time and never after that. On a real note, I feel like this is good for what you expect. There's a fridge and freezer, the oven is low quality (but adequate), and the TV is terrible (why are you here to watch TV though?). There were adequate dishes to make what you wanted (we had bacon and eggs every morning with no problem). The BBQ pits are adequate. If you plan on using them, it's a MUST to bring a steel brush to clean the grate. I actually smoked some pork ribs last year which came out just fine (although it required cutting them in half). Having said that, I would expect the BBQ pits to be used for grilling not smoking; perfect for hamburgers, hotdogs, or steaks. Oh, as far as WiFi, I wouldn't rely on it--it's not great. I think the quality depends on how close you are to the office; the further away, the worse it's going to be. read more

We booked in for 2 nights with my family, we decided to leave the next day, because we did not feel safe, my children were frightened and couldn't sleep that night due to the loud music and gunshots . Our Group of 4 stayed in Hidden View house. 7/22-7/26/19. Very shocked at the condition of the property. Cute place but not well maintained. Also dysfunctional bathrooms. DONT RENT @Neal's. It deserves 0 stars except for location. Toilets sit directly in front of the shower opening, so you have to climb over the toilet to get into the shower. The house wasn't well stocked for 4, let alone the 12 it is capable of housing. NOT enough drinking glasses or plates. NO toaster, or other normally used small appliances that you would have at any VRBO/AirBNB. This house was FILTHY! Chicken parts in the garbage disposal that required disinfectant to get the smell out, molded food in the potato peeler, two baking trays had fresh food stuck to them, ALL dishes(what few there were) weren't clean but put away dirty. Toilets had hair, urine yuk on the seats and hinges in both baths. Ceiling fans, blinds, counters and furniture were covered in dust and grime. We spilled ice on the floor upon arrival so had to wipe it up, discovering the filth of black dirt on the floors, this was cabin wide not just in kitchen or doorway. Never been mopped floors!! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! (along w/ bed bugs) I honestly can't believe I'm even having to write this review. Neal's had become a staple to our family vacays. We now have an 8 month old son & were excited for this to be his 1st of many trips to Neal's lodges. We will no longer be returning to Neal's with the way that Thea Davenport handled the entire situation. We checked into Neal's around 6:30/7pm once we got to our rental (Langtry Lodge) everyone ate dinner & jumped into the swimming pool while I laid my 8 month old down for bed. My son woke up at 11:45pm as I crawled into bed to console him, I noticed a bug in the bed. As I tried to smash the bug unaware of what it was at the time I picked up my son. Once the bug was smashed blood poured onto the sheets. We got out of bed & I began to look my son over, he had been bit. By this time the whole house began to look at their beds. My grandparents checked their bed, just by lifting a pillow bed bugs began to scatter. My grandpa lifted the quilt that was on the bed & more bugs began to scatter. He then checked a pillow case where more bed bugs sat inside. At this time we began to call the "Emergency" number provided on our Neal's check in paperwork. It was about midnight at this time, the voicemail stated they will try & get back to you asap, which never happened. We called the "Emergency" line at least 20 times in a span of two hours before all 18 of us decided to head to a hotel in Uvalde for the night. Once it hit 9am Neal's called my husband & said they received our messages & that pest control was on the way to the lodge. Before heading to the Lodge we stopped into the Neal's store to talk to them about the issues. Our main issue was that no one contacted us until 9am the following day after we had called the "emergency" line over 20 times. Bed bugs are inevitable, you take a chance with bed bugs anywhere you stay. We were understanding of that part, but not as to why they have an "emergency" line that doesn't get answered. Once we started talking to Thea she automatically had an attitude, she totally dismissed us, offered a refund & told us to go talk to the exterminator. She didn't want to hear what happened or anything. Once we brought up the emergency line issue she began to tell us those calls don't get answered & there was nothing they could do after midnight. She began to further tell us bed bugs weren't a "big deal" & we could just close off those rooms & continue to stay. Each room had 5 people sleeping in them so that would've been 10 people without a bed! She also told us she could not put us anywhere else as she was completely booked & told us to take the refund. When I mentioned a cleaning crew she said they don't go at night so they wouldn't have noticed the bed bugs. She continued to dismiss me when I asked if she had a cleaning crew go out to the lodge before we stayed there. She had the worst remarks & the worst smart ass responses I've ever seen come from an "owner"of an establishment. She continued to tell us it wasn't a big deal no one got back to us until the morning time & deflecting that the paper she gave us & said she wrote, stated it was an EMERGENCY line that we could call AFTER HOURS! Why have an emergency line for after hours if the calls won't get answered until the office is open, that is not an EMERGENCY line! she continued to tell us we were making it a bigger problem than it was & continued to be a smart ass with her tone and facial expressions. We were told she was no longer going to fight with us & when we said we would be leaving reviews she said "oh we figured that" & laughed in our faces. What owner is okay with a bad review instead of trying to accommodate people?? We would've even taken cabins then one of the houses, we spent money to get there, several hundred of dollars on groceries & people took vacation time to come to her establishment & she couldn't cared less!! They obviously don't not care about guest & are all about money. You would think they would hire decent enough cleaning crews & have a person on call to answer an "emergency" line with how much money they make! We will NEVER stay at Neals again. read more

We visited them in 3rd week of Aug. Single BR @$202 per night for 4 nights (high-season rates) . We were so disappointed after check-in, my wife begged to leave. Cabin was cleaned but overly simple and "unsophisticated". A/C's small and set at 62 but barely cooled, no curtains, no towels or bedding, horrible mattress, cheap plastic toilet seat (broke).....well, all cheap and not what you'd expect at this price point. Mgr did us a 'favor' and let us cancel our stay for a one-night penalty. During discussion she responded that "we don't care about your opinions" which kinda sums up their apparent business strategy. And why they want cash up front and no refunds. In fairness, we're in Covid times. River was really low, warm and pretty stagnant, plus filled with local visitors (day rates), many small kids (but am sure none of them peed in the water, right?). Resulted in reduced attractiveness of location. Very little other activities operating. Mgr claimed this is a TX icon ...... and maybe it was back when the father ran the place 10 yrs ago, but the current conditions don't merit the "high season rates" they bill. Not even low season rates. There must be better alternatives. Two stars and not one just cause they let us cancel for a mere $200 fee. read more

Lovely, lovely stay at the CC2 Cabin. The amenities are great and it's well stocked with all of your kitchen basics. Bring your sheets, towels, toiletries and don't forget your coffee filters...! A roach did show up in the kitchen and a scorpion crawled out of a shower drain, but we took care of that pretty quickly. Faucet handles were broken off too and with that said, I would have rated Neal's Lodges with a 5. Awesome place to stay especially during the off season for the peace and quiet. I've loved Neal's since first coming here in the 70's! *addendum- A huge shoutout to Jessica at Neal's Lodges! I called the office on our way home to San Antonio to alert them that I had left my earrings in a bathroom in our cabin. Not very valuable but very dear to my heart. We really enjoyed staying at the Cattleman home this past week. It's a beautiful home. It's is built up on a hillside with a beautiful view off the back deck. I was pleased to find a fully stocked kitchen. It had all the cooking utensils and pots and pans we needed. The game room has a pool table but there was only one good cue stick. There was a dart board, but no darts. We will bring our own next time. As the older adults went to bed early, we could not hear the younger crowd having fun in the game room at all. A herd of white tail deer came to visit the second evening we were there. The river wasn't flowing very high and the floaters walked more than they floated. This year when I called for a refund of my deposit paid over 18 months ago they wanted to charge me a 20% fee. I told them I do not accept that since I am canceling more than 90 day notice. A minimum three night stay is required. We contemplated leaving after our first night, and ended up leaving a night early. I've lived in the south central Texas hill country my entire life. I killed one of the biggest, angriest scorpions I've ever seen in the shower of cabin 8, just hours after killing the largest spider I've ever seen not-on-the-Discovery-channel but before I killed the cockroach and after I squashed the entourage of strange worm caterpillar things (... all in the same bathroom). This also happened the same day we encountered two water moccasins on the bank of the Frio. Frankly that's just a lot of wildlife for one day, but I'm not blaming Neal's for the local snake population. The cabin doors barely lock, the street lights around the cabins at Neal's are kept off at night, the full size mattresses are terrible (the box springs on one bed of cabin 8 are currently destroyed), claiming to sleep 6 people with 2 full size mattresses (again, one being busted) and 2 outdoor twins seems a bit optimistic, interior lighting is too miserably dark to handle a board game or reading at night, the shower is full of mold, diesel trucks can be heard powering up the hill outside cabin 8 all day, the window unit A/C is quite loud versus normal conversation, Jimmy Whatever's Canteen (the onsite bar / music venue) advertises to be open "every night", except when the owner doesn't feel like opening it, which the staff admits includes most Sundays, and the "arcade" is mostly a large empty space nowadays. On the upside, every cabin has a refrigerator, freezer and grill so you can cook for yourself instead of eating every meal across the street. Take advantage of that. $508 for three nights? He showed her and she asked daughter to not sit on his lap because this was a family environment. Are you serious? We smelled MJ from OBVIOUS UNDER AGE KIDS THAT WERE ALSO DRINKING BEER! Staff wasn't empathetic about me being stung TWICE by Angry aggressive SCORPION in the middle of the night in Cabin 51. All they said was.."well we have someone spray the camp grounds every month" not sure if they were implying I was lying because their faces and tone was blank... scorpions are probably attracted to this cabin due to the water damage in the bathroom that runs all the way to the bedroom bed. Campground has been littered with the same Beer cans all weekend and they told me they empty the trash every day... (again I felt like I was accused of lying). We have came here for a few years and this is the first time I've had issues and tried to voice them to the staff only to be dismissed like it was nothing. Their public relations are really going down hill. They are really letting this place go which is sad because my children love coming here. So glad they didn't get stung by that 3 inch Scorpion. We stayed at their tiny RV park (5 slots), entirely empty but for us. What a memorable weekend! Deer behind our rig at night; a lovely campfire; a peaceful, shaded site; a roomy, convenient shower; a pond behind with peeper frogs; a short walk to the dining room; interesting areas for the dogs to explore; and swim access to the Rio Frio for all of us. Knocked off one star for their cable setup (not actually cable; you have to put a $200 deposit on a DirecTV receiver and then cable it up to your TV) and a pricey WiFi setup they got snookered into buying (over a dozen access points, but only about two of them actually have a working route to the Internet). Also this area of town has zero cell signal for anybody but AT&T (which may be a positive if you are looking to be unreachable). I've been coming to concan to float down the Frio for at least 30 years now and I've always used Neal's to rent tubes, and for their shuttle service. I've stayed in the cabins a few times as well, but it was many years ago and dont remember much from that experience. The staff is always friendly and they even held some tubes for me when I arrived around noon on a saturday, since they were running out. By the time I reparked, went inside to pay and came back out to the tube storage area, my 6 tubes that they saved me were the last available. People behind me got stuck waiting til who knows how long for the next group of tubers to come in and drop off their tubes. Also, when leaving the river, they have kids driving mules and golf carts and retrieving the rental tubes so you don't have to lug them back up the hill to the general store. I'll always continue to use them anytime I come for tubing. read more

What a fantastic time we all had there. Looks like this is going to become an annual pilgrimage. The Frio River was awesome. Unlike at Garner, the river is crystal clear. You could see that bottom at the swimming hole. It gets about 8-10 feet deep in some spots. This is one of those places where you get to experience the natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country. This place really reminds you that Texas does indeed have a lot to offer when it comes to scenery. I also suggest checking out the bat flight not too far from the cabins. I was a little skeptical, but I ended up really enjoying the spectacle. We only stayed for about an hour. We were told that it would continue for another couple of hours. Went for 4th of July weekend the stay was nice.. Rained while we were out there which is totally fine but... the water they make it seem like it's AWSOME but in reality it's not all that great... The water where it is deep where fur babies can't really go looks okay but in the shallower part it's a little yucky didn't really want to take our dogs in seemed there might be bacteria. I asked on Facebook if they test for bacteria since it's not really flowing. They apparently did not like that I was asking. Come yes back with an article from KSAT saying it was flowing down by garner but not the swimming hole. So I asked do y'all test the swimming hole since it's deep and pretty stagnant and they said "it's flowing" I responded with that I was there for the 4th and before it rained there wasn't much movement and they said well if your too worried the by all means don't come. Also the people that stayed above us had little kids, they were so loud at all parts of the day stomping. Keeping us up at night and waking us up in the morning. Even asked the people kindly to stop, still didn't, called the office they said they would send someone out to ask them to keep it down. Still did nothing and are just as loud. We had a large group this past week at Neal's Lodge, everything was great!! The lodge we stayed at slept 8, no problems at all. The wifi did not work, but we spent the majority of the time at the river anyway. All other amenities were great!! We will be back!! read more

My friends, family, and I have been staying at Neal's every summer for the past eleven years. The cleanliness of cabins has been declining the past three years, but we really wanted to keep our tradition going. This year, July 2019, the cabin was inexcusably FILTHY. Dust, dead bugs, live bugs, broken fixtures, electrical hazards, website pics showed extra tables for our big group that were not in the cabin, etc... Immediately upon arrival, we reported it all to management. That evening, they sent out a cleaning crew who said they didn't see anything wrong. So, we took pictures and showed them to management the next morning - who agreed that it was indeed filthy and needed to be cleaned. We arrived back to the cabin that evening to discover that it had only been spot cleaned - only the exact places we showed pictures of were cleaned, the rest of the cabin was still filthy. Three people in our party got sick - although impossible to know if it's connected, it's very concerning because other reviews of Neal's mentions groups getting sick who stayed in dirty cabins. We saw 12 scorpions inside of the cabin in the three days we were there. Two were alive inside of a light fixture above one of the beds and we were unable to use that area. One of the kids on the trip was stung. There were also many other bugs inside of the cabin - alive and dead - each day...roaches, crickets, spiders, and flying sting bugs. We floated the river with a party of 12 and a float for the cooler - which cost a total of $215. When we got to the end, we learned that we had to walk the floats back ourselves - up two hills, in the road with vehicle traffic, in the 100 degree heat, in our wet clothes and sandals. We also floated with children, so many of us had to carry multiple floats. In the past, they have offered shuttle service at the end of the float, but they no longer do that and did not tell us that before we left for the float. We contacted the owner, Yvonne Davenport, after the trip. She dismissed our concerns in a very sarcastic manner - she did NOT apologize for the lack of cleanliness of the cabin even though she admitted that she spoke with the manager who saw the pictures and knows that it was for sure filthy. She gave us links of other places to stay on the Frio and obviously did not care about retaining our business. She indicated that we were lying about how often we have stayed there - saying she didn't think we stayed any time before 2016 - very easily to prove on our parts! We have posted all of the emails - ours and Yvonne's - with our review on Neal's Facebook page posted July 2019. It's worth a read if you are considering spending any money and time to stay at this establishment. It was so disappointing to have a summer vacation with 17 people ruined and then not to have our concerns acknowledged by the owners of the establishment. It's a shame to break family tradition...judging from the lack of response from management and subsequent total disrespect from the owner, I imagine many others will be following suit and choosing to stay elsewhere. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to stay here after seeing how they treat their "guests". We certainly will never stay at Neal's again. read more
