Carrboro DMV - I went on-line five weeks prior to schedule an appointment. My appointment to obtain a ReadID was scheduled for 09/04 @11:00 am. I was in/out of my appointment in approximately 15 minutes. CECE was the employee who helped me through the process. CECE was amazing! She was professional, knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly! If you go on-line to schedule an appointment and CARRBORO is available...schedule your appointment there and hopefully you will be fortunate enough to be called to "station #3" to work with CECE! You will wait for a very long time; if you can get an appointment, do. However, the disconnect between the supply and demand is not Carrboro DMV's fault. Do not get there much later than 12 PM when they start walk-ins. We waited about four hours but the people were very nice and helpful, even when tempers were fraying. We are required to have Driver's license and this real. I.D; however, it is very difficult to obtain.. I have been to a number of locations, in attempts to get ISs and drivers license for myself and with clients, and it has always been very difficult. The carboro location is amazing. Yes, I waited two hours.However, other locations had much longer wait times. The staff at the carboro location were so friendly and polite! They were efficient, moved quickly and actually checked on people in line. I have never had such a pleasant experience at the driver's license agency in the area. I greatly appreciate all of the ladies that worked in that office today. read more

This rating reflects my extreme respect for the employees at this branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles. They could not have been more courteous, more friendly, or more helpful. But let me add that walk-in appointments are available in Carrboro as early as 7 AM, not what it says on the DMV website. And by mid afternoon, if the load gets too heavy, they may stop accepting walk-ins. That's true at this office, though not necessarily at all DMV offices. The online appointment scheduling system could not be more useless, at least as far as my experience is concerned. read more

Visited DMV on November 1, 2022. My dad had an appointment and he always gets nervous because he doesn't speak English fluently. So I always go with him to help translate or explain something in case he doesn't understand. Never had an issue until yesterday. There is a light skin woman , hair is very short to scalp/head, has side bangs. When she called my dad up I went him him , and she immediately murmured " now why do I have two people coming up at once". I immediately explained that I was here to translate for him or explain. She didn't even bother to first ask " how can I help you". She got all mean and defensive. She was very very mean and rude. Horrible customer service. Never experienced anything like this before. My mom then went on November 2, and she also came home telling us how she witness also the same woman screaming at other dmv visitors terribly. read more

Complete and utter waste of time. Appalled at how ridiculous this place is. Everything moves in snail-like fashion. First of all, tried making an appt online. Their website is BULL. Tells you to call them. Their telephone system? I can't even understand WTH the recorded guy is saying with all that background buzzing. C'mon guys...spend a couple dollars and get a proper system. Anyway, we were left with no choice but to come in person. Got here at 810 am after reading reviews to come early. They were right. Line was at least 50 deep by that time. Don't be fooled by the line outside...you're just waiting to get into the building so you could talk to the front desk. Didn't leave til 1230 ish. 1) Everyone gets squeezed into a tiny storefront (sardine status) and stands/sits for hours on end. Never seen such a sad DMV in my life.-.- 2) Ask the front desk lady something?...she'll have NO IDEA or simply won't tell you. Complete lack of regard for people's time...its almost like they get a kick out of cutting off the line at certain hours...yes, we heard a conversation between two staff members who were scoffing about how they cut the line. Just a 17 year old girl applying to get her license. Spoken aggressively about making my ID picture look like a "selfie" when that was not the case, and getting screamed at when I didn't have the correct forms/papers when I was misinformed by their website. The lady I had in booth #5 screamed at me until I was in tears because she got irritated the second I was called up to the booth, and everyone in the DMV could hear how loud and disrespectful her words and tone were. Go somewhere else if you can. I've never had a good, quick, or enjoyable experience here. It is quite the opposite. Wait time is listed on line - great. Listed at this office as 6 mins! Great!! Reality - 2 hours!!!!! So don't believe the accuracy of the times listed. Why is it that government employees treat members of the public like they are criminals? Why is this the accepted norm? This was my second visit. I had already been through most of the license process after moving to NC from MO, my insurance paperwork had my husbands name on only so I had to bring back proof of my name on the policy. So once again I had to sit through a two hour wait just to show that piece of paper. The girl in booth 3 aged maybe 30s or 40s, with long black braids, didn't look at me, didn't greet me, just snapped at me "license!". Didn't listen to my explanation. Didn't treat me with respect. When she was finished she just put the paperwork down, she didn't hand it to me, didn't look at me, didn't say "thanks", "have a nice day", nothing, just continued staring at her computer screen. I had to say to her "is that it?" She never made eye contact with me. Absolutely disgusting customer service. Our taxes are paying for her job and she treat me with such distain. Got here at 745 am on a Friday. Only 1 person was waiting ahead of me! By the time they opened, there were maybe 10 people behind me. I thought I had everything I'd need to get my license changed from TX to NC in handy form of in my email. Turns out you still can't show them anything electronically and need a hard copy. They were super nice about me not knowing that. Things I was missing in handy form were my insurance policy and proof of address. They asked me to call my insurance company on the spot and fax over a DL123 form which was fairly easily done by me making a quick phone call. If I had that info on me, I would have been in and out in 10 mins! But I had to wait for the faxed document to make it over so I was there for around 30 minutes. I'm used to insanely long lines and waiting at least half a day in Texas so this was a pleasant surprise. Service was quick and friendly! Definitely recommend! Things you need to update your license from another state to NC: Two IDs with your date of birth (can be old drivers license and passport) Social security card Proof of address (any utility bill) Proof of car insurance ^As I said, I was missing the last 2. If you don't have those docs printed, you still don't have to get out of line. Just call your insurance company and have them fax over a DL123 form to the office you're at (it has both your address and your car insurance info on it so 2 birds with one stone) read more

This DMV is full of power-tripping assholes. Once, the guy at the front desk literally said "A lady got upset with me and I asked her to leave. Doesn't she KNOW I have the power to make sure she never gets her license here?" Oh, and he's still LIGHTYEARS better than the woman at the front desk, who looks at you dumbfounded whenever you ask her a question and needs you to repeat it twice before she can register the words enough to give you an incoherent response. It's majorly hit-or-miss with the people at the counters. One particular woman seems to get a high off of failing people on their road test. I had her the first time and got a list of criticisms the length of my arm before I finished the test. Got a guy the second time, and aced the road test with absolutely zero criticisms (hadn't driven at all between the two tests, so it wasn't due to improved skill or anything). Incidentally, I saw two people take the road test with that first lady, both failed, and one got reduced to tears after the lady basically told her that she should not be allowed behind the wheel EVER. Tips: Go anytime of the year, just not during the summer (the lines are 10 times worse because of all the students coming in for learner's permits and road tests). Come with a truckload of patience so you don't throttle the incompetent egomaniacal front desk people. WATCH that damn screen and make sure they don't skip over your number (they did that to me on two separate occasions). If you're taking the road test, you might want to use a car that isn't a junker, because that first lady looked like she wanted to fail me just based off of how old my car was (she honestly didn't want to get in the car). Also, PRAY that you get one of the few decent proctors whose life goal isn't to fail as many road test takers as possible. But yeah, besides all that, this DMV is a "REAL gem!" (verbatim how the woman described my 2006 Corolla). read more

Easy and convenient location, ample waiting area with a clear ticketing process and signage. Walk in, go to the front desk with your license/documents in order and let the person know what you're there for. They'll assign you a ticket letter/number combo based on that, and you'll sit down to wait. Yes, you may have to wait a bit. That's life, right? And yes, when I was there, the woman working the desk was assisting someone in a kiosk, so I had to wait for a minute then, too. I got over it...not sure why that riles people up. I wish I could get in and out and back to work too, but that never actually happens. Fact of life. I followed the other advice to go in the morning, and be prepared with a book or something to keep you busy. I was in and out in about 35 minutes, wait time included, to get a new resident license (trading in out of state license). I've waited much longer in other states, but I think that the small location and focused purpose of this office--licenses only, no registrations!--made it quick. read more

oh man, where to even start. Ah yes, how about the fact that the wait for this dmv is unceasingly excruciating! There will be a line of 20+ people down the sidewalk an hour before they open; let us not forget that the place actually opens at 7am, not 9am as specified online. The DMV office has to be one of the most bureaucratic places that most people dread to go to. Recently, I had to renew my license and went here thinking that a smaller location would have fewer people and thus a shorter wait than the bigger branches, which usually have lines before opening time. When I arrived at this location I had a hard time noticing an empty chair. Thus, I went up and got my number and asked the estimated waiting time. Of course, the clerk hesitated to give me any number, but eventually she suggested by about 45 minutes. Since there are no public bathrooms at this location I had to go to the nearby Food Lion. If you are coming with small children, make sure they go beforehand. I wasted time browsing the aisles at the supermarket and got myself a drink and headed back. After waiting what seemed and eternity, my number was called and went to back speak with the DMV representative. The lady was pleasant took my information, processed it, took a vision test, a street sign test, and then I was sent take my new picture. Thankfully, I came out looking great, unlike the previous picture where I came out looking like a Neanderthal, had I came looking busted in the picture again I don't think they would had re-photographed me. So ladies (guys?) make your "Duck Face" perfect on the first try. At the end, I put my temporary license, put on my sunglasses, and left the premises happy that this errand was completely. Now I can live happily ever after for the next 8 years or so until I have to go back to renew again. read more

Rating DMV 5 stars? Unheard of right? Especially as I usually Yelp to complain! So let me explain. I was at DMV today for a 2:30 appointment and had to wait 40 minutes. Yeah not perfect, however there were walk-ins still waiting 5-6 hours. Of course it's outrageous. DMV as a service, of course 1 star. However my 5 stars is because the staff were AMAZING. How they, working for Government, diligently helping their customers, defusing tension and working relentlessly despite the organization having no additional funding/ resourcing to deal with the recently massive increased numbers of customers, is amazing to me. Humbling to see such extraordinary people at DMV today. You guys should take your rightful place along side emergency responders and members of our defense forces as heroes. You're an inspiration. After experiencing the Sanford, NC branch, anything would have been better but the Carrboro location really is great! I arrived at 7:45, the doors opened at 8:00 and I went straight to a desk. When the reviews say they've waited a long time, they mean they waited a LONG time. I went in at 8 and waited 3.5 hrs and got out at around 12. What was I trying to do? I was just applying for a real ID. You could tell that the asian man at the front wants the world to know that he's knowledgeable. His pride could hit the heavens. I didn't even ask but he just rambled on about how the congress implemented real ID in ---- because they thought ---- and they passed it by ----... Like can I just get my ID?? It wasn't that he was mean to me (in fact he was very nice to me) but you could tell that he would be awful to anyone whose first impression he didn't like. He kept on telling people while laughing how he would kick out anyone who argued with him. That's not something to brag about. read more

I arrived at 10am and by 12:30 my number had only moved by 2 spots and I had 12 more to go, so thought it would be safe to make an internet appt. at home as my internet went out the day before. This is my only day off to resolve issues. I lived close by. Went back at 2:40 and had missed my # by 3...my bad. word of advise...in looking at these reviews best times seem to be after the holidays and on Thurs. & Fri. before lunch. I did like the receptionist...she made me laugh. But waiting over 3hrs was definitely a patience work out. I'll try again...who knows maybe my patience will win the fight next time. we'll see read more

The best DMV experience ever! Professional and Excellent Customer Service from Jin Ho at the door. So...I was concerned about getting my license renewed during a pandemic, but they made the experience great. I arrived early around 8/830am didn't have an appointment. There was a line with about 5 people on each side. I would highly recommend making an appointment since appointments are priority. When you arrive you stay outside due to COVID-19. You line up and there is an appointment line to the left and a non-appointment line to the right. The appointments go first and everyone is pre-screening about COVID-19 symptoms and travel. Once you enter inside, everyone is separated by standing on circles or white lines for social distancing. The chairs are limited and separated as well. Everything was very clean and handled well. The staff is behind a plastic screen and most have on masks. I do wish everyone was in a mask, since I had to remove my mask for my drivers license picture and eye test. Even though my agent Allison was behind a plastic wall, I would've felt better she had a mask on especially while I took mine off since this virus is airborne. All and all, my experience was great and I will always come here for my future needs. Please note that my review is of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles at 100 NC-54, Carrboro, NC 27510 (not the license plate agency a few feet down at 104 W NC-54 Suite D, Carrboro, NC 27510). I know everyone complains about going to the DMV but the location in Carrboro was awesome. I took my son for his driving test. There was no wait. The staff was very pleasant and friendly. That's right you read it correctly - pleasant and friendly. I'm giving a special shout out to Mr Silence who treated my son with total respect. This has not been our experience at other DMVs. 5 hour wait. Workers were very nice. Me and the lady that did my drivers license talked a lot... a little too much I believe.. she must not have been paying too good of attention because she spelt my name wrong. Moved from SC to NC and all I can say is SC has got it together as far as their dmvs. Never had waited for than 30 mins when I lived there. Also, Be prepared when you go to the title place. Cost over $800 to register our two cars (2016 Camry and 2002 Nissan). Kinda started questioning why I ever thought it was a good idea to move here after those two incidents. I went to this DMV today with my wife to get our DL renewed which is expiring in 2 days and I got my Visa extension papers. I have showed all my documents to the intake person and he said you can get it renewed. Now after 1 hr 30 mins when our number came the lady who attended us talked really rudely and told us that you cannot renew your license in advance you have to get it done on the day of expiry only. (this is non-sense) I think common sense is really missing in DMV department and there is lot of disconnect between their own employes. Gotta hand it to them! I went at lunch on a Thursday and was in & out in under 25 minutes for a new license. The staff was nice and accommodating. They let me take my picture twice. Anyone having a bad experience probably didn't have the right docs with them; they are strict about what documentation you need in order to have your request processed. Slow service, unkind staff, and overall depressing atmosphere. These are al stereotypes of the US DMV. This office only serves to reinforce that long held time honored tradition of providing the worst customer experience possible. You will NOT be surprised by this DMV. Staff is condescending and pretentious. They really go out of their way to make you feel bad for going there. One of the staff was friendly, but the rest wouldn't even throw a smile your way if the happy police held a gun up to their head. Oh, and if this is your only choice, a few tips. NO BATHROOM. DO NOT WALK IN HERE WITHOUT FIRST GOING TO A REST ROOM. DOES NOT ACCEPT CARDS. ONLY CASH OR CHECK. CAN NOT ACCEPT EMAIL. ONLY FAX BRING SOMETHING TO ENTERTAIN YOURSELF. WAITING PERIOD IS AS BIG AS THE NEXT SAMSUNG PHONE. I would say avoid this place at all costs, but that's probably what they want you to do. I say overload this place with business until they are forced to install online appointments to alleviate their abysmal waiting period. read more

Oh my, I'm glad I didn't look at these reviews before I went to this branch. I recently moved down from NYC and had been putting this off--I hate bureaucracy and wasted hours. So, while I was very pleasantly surprised to be in and out in 30 minutes, that's not why I am going to the trouble to post a review; it's actually because everyone I encountered was just so nice and helpful. The overall atmosphere was jovial--for what it's worth, not only was I told I could have a do-over if I didn't like my photo, the photographer went through a whole re-setting process when HE didn't like the shiny streak in the photo. Even if I'd been there for 90 minutes, it would have been tolerable--NYC's drivers license satellite offices are remarkably efficient (truly), but they can't match Carrboro DMV's Southern hospitality. read more

only got one star because I couldn't give zero.. waited two and a half hours to get my drivers license renewed, only to find out after the wait that I would still have to wait for my new license to be mailed to me.. I also re- registered to vote and after the lady found out I wanted to register as a democrat she became extremely shitty to me.. flat out told me I was a liar for saying when I last got a renewal i walked out of the office with a new license and that they had been mailing them for over ten years.... I was there lady, you weren't.. I have never been to this license office before and will never go there again... if They're going to mail no matter what I'll renew online.. read more
