Let me start by saying..........I HAD AN APPOINTMENT for license renewal. From the person who had an appt, it could not have gone smoother. Checked in at the kiosk (after wading through all the people who were walk ins). I waited about 15 min before being called and it was easy peasy !! Got my REAL ID. The clerk could not have been nicer. She even retook my pic cause it wasnt the best first try. Clerk told me that there were about 70 people waiting for "walk ins" when she got there at around 7 AM. By 9 AM, they were no longer taking walk ins. It is obviously a problem. This facility is just too small for the people it needs to service. read more

The DMV is never gonna be on anyone's list of "top things to do in the Triangle," but the Hillsborough location makes it tolerable. When you arrive, you text a number to get in line so that you can wait in your car and see updates on how many people are in front of you. The employee in the lobby will also help you check that you have all the right documents so you don't waste your time if you're missing something. All the workers are really sweet and so so patient. The line is virtual but you need to wait to get into it. Need to get in the walk-in line between 5-7 am or they close the QR to get in for the day. You scan at 8am and then wait til your spot is up in your car. Appointments are prioritized. I was there 6:30-11:30am, bring a good book and just be patient. Hope this helps someone. read more

The website wont recognize my new address so I need to come in person. You cant show up without an appointment and they are booked over a month out. Show up with an appointment and there is 6 people ahead of me. The system and organization of this office is terrible and they do not appreciate or value the people they support or their time. Have not been able to change my address or receive my inspection sticker because of this. read more

I went on May 20th 2024 to take my drivers test, 2 out of 3 of the staff members were so rude to everyone!!! in the waiting room one lady had to ask one of the staff members did she do anything to her because she was so rude! the African American lady with the longer hair, glasses, kind of older asked why I was there I kindly told her "I'm here to take the drivers test" she was so RUDE literally rolled her eyes as if it wasn't her job when I told her, right then and there I felt UNCOMFORTABLE to have her ride with me! while driving she told me LAST minute to "make a left" which I missed because it was LAST MINUTE so she failed me ! This DMV handles long lines better than other places. But they refused to issue me a drivers license, because I had middle name listed on SSN, while it was not showing in the passport. SSA does not consider middle name a part of the legal name and write it without supporting documents. DMV could easily issue me a drivers license but the turned me back to go again through the circle of hell in long lines of government institution. read more

What is the point of having people make appointments if you're still going to make them wait in line, outside in the nearly 90 degree heat? It's summer in the south- are you looking to give someone heatstroke? If I don't have an appointment, I know that I need to take a morning or afternoon off to wait in line. I would bring water in case I need to stand outside. However- If you give me a specific appointment, but then you're an hour late, it's just disrespectful of my time and makes it impossible for me to plan anything. On top of that, making me stand outside in the hot sun, sweating and getting dizzy?I wish my job allowed this level of unprofessionalism. What a shameful way of treating people. read more

It is an actual DMV, but that doesn't mean anyone there wants to help you. It works to get a driver's license, and it's so out of the way that I'd say it's better to go to if you have a car in Durham. But you still are not treated very well. When I was there I was treated with cruel indifference and when it came time to pay and my debit card didn't work, they didn't care at all. It eventually became clear their magnetic card system wasn't working (3 other people couldn't get it accomplished). The very young lady who I worked with couldn't give a s** After she told me to call my bank (and they said it's all okay) eventually she mentioned I could write a check, and I had brought my checkbook, so that solved that. She otherwise kept mumbling that I could go find an ATM, in the middle of nowhere Hillsborough as we are ... Really a bunch of jerks. read more

Though so many people on here complained about this location, I can honestly say that they are WRONG! Coming from NY, this DMV is definitely smaller than the ones I've seen in my times, however they are quite efficient. I got to the Hillsborough location about 45 minutes early, as I was hearing horror stories from other people and noticed a line of people waiting for the doors to open. The people in the line were friendly and small conversations were made to pass the time. Once the facility opened, we were all brought in to the building, given some brief instructions and brought over to a lady who gave you a ticket number. After the line died down, she announced that she was available to anyone who wanted to come up to the front to see if they have the right documentation..(definitely different than most places who don't help you or anything, then when your number is called, you are denied for not having the right documents). A few people before me got checked and were told that they needed documents before getting their licenses, such as an ORIGINAL copy of your birth certificate (needs stamp); passport / SS card, 2 forms of proof of residency, and current license (if renewing). This was a great help so those people didn't have to stand around waiting for nothing, and they could come back more prepared next time. There were a total of 20ish people ahead of me, however it was broken down into different "lines" or areas. one line was for those who needed to take their driving test, another for renewals, another for Real ID and the last for new licenses (such as me, moving from out of state to NC). The lines moved rather quickly and i was seen by 9am (an hour after the doors opened). When seated at the desk, you present all your paperwork, they ask you a few questions then give you a vision / signage test. Nothing hard, but needs to make sure you understand what a stop sign is, or yield or railroad crossing. Afterwards, you take your picture, pay the fee and get a temporary card. In and out without any issues. The attendant in the room issuing numbers was a pleasure to talk with as well. Very lively lady who kept everyone informed (where's the bathrooms, water fountains, etc.) This was a truly well run facility and am very shocked to see so many negative reviews. Though out of my way, I'd definitely go here for my DMV License needs in the future, as well as recommend people to go here. read more

The lady In front didn't let me in with my sister as she doesn't speak English and lady pointed to me on the line outside to stay behind (where was extremely hot 95 degrees) where was nobody. Inside was not even better , examiner didn't want to look on the docs, pretending she doesn't understand what we giving to her . She see these docs every day! And of course sister didn't pass exam as she was driving to "slow" 48 per mile as supposed 50!!! For me it was a racism from ladies with dark skin in front and examiner ! read more

Two african American ladies and one white lady with longer hair. and my experience there would have been Amazing but there was one lady, older white woman, with white very short hair, she was very rude and I talked with an accent due To which she was racist against me and said "someone who talked like you kept calling today and I think it was you" and when I said I hadn't called, she didn't agree and just kept saying I sounded like that person who called and she will make me wish I wasn't that person. then I Couldn't take it anymore and gave her a few harsh words and a little louder voice. Then i went out and took another ticket to get someone else. all the while I was there she wasn't working at all and one of the ladies even asked her to stop playing games on her computer. The worst DMV we've experienced EVER and that's including experience in 6 different states across the country. We arrived at 10:30 in the morning after moving to North Carolina a few days ago. After hearing that half of the people in the waiting room had already been there for two hours, we went to get something to eat and came back. They were still about 20 people away from our number (and there are other letter/number combos, so maybe 40 people away total). The waiting room only sits 11 people. I'm 7 months pregnant. They shut off the AC and don't allow food or drinks inside. There were only 2 employees there to help all these people. In addition to these glaring issues, they do not offer any paperwork to fill out in advance, so each person that goes in averages an 11-22 minute session. Between leaning against various walls and trying to get some AC in the car while my husband waited, we were THERE when our number came up, but somehow didn't hear them. Maybe because I was in the bathroom? All of a sudden, around 1:30pm they call the number above ours. I went in to see what happened, the man claimed that he checked the parking lots and called out the number and tells me I'm going to have to get two new numbers. He has not left his seat. It's 1:30 at this time. So after waiting for 3 hours, we get to start over again. No inkling of understanding, sympathy for the fact that I'm fully pregnant with nowhere to sit and no AC. Nada. I was scared to use the bathroom again. Thankfully, a nice young woman gave me her seat. The screen system went down for a period of time as well...at 3pm, the screen still said C418 (we were C420 and C421) but they were helping C433 by that time. And while we were waiting for our second set of numbers to come up, the system jumped about 6 numbers, skipping us again! If I hadn't gone into the office and alerted them to this fact, they would have kept going, skipping another 4 people, including us again! If only the employees here were half as nice as the other people in the waiting room. 6 hours later, we finally finished. read more

I completely agree with one of the reviews below that this place has some serious racist problems. I can't say for others but the rudeness of the white female examiner sitting on the left was just stunning. She kept chatting with another male examiner on the right while taking care of my application. When I was a bit confused about whether some of the questions were thrown at me, She rolled her eyes asking if I understood English. When I told her what forms I had brought with me she interrupted and emphasized she could read English. No eye contact, mean, condescending to say the least, and the sarcasm was so thick in the air--wow! I thought conversations like this could only appear in TV shows. But if you make good use of your acting talent you won't end up working at a DMV all your life. Shame on you to be living in this modern time like a zombie and verbal abuse is all that you could do to us hardworking immigrants. To be fair, the entire process was fast. I was at the DMV Hillsborough on the morning of 3rd of March for road test. I have to return as our vehicle had an expired plate. A colored officer (I cannot read her name from the document she gave me) very badly behaved starting from the beginning for the reason I don't understand and she declined me the licensee within less than a minute being on my car. This DMV is a nightmare. One of the female employees arbitrarily decides whether or not she can see your printed documents well enough. If she can't, she throws them back at you and tells you to bring new copies. Bear in mind that there's anywhere from a 6-8 week backlog for appointments and you've been waiting since May to get in here. So you're left scrambling around trying to find somewhere to reprint your perfectly legible and valid documents (that others waiting with you will confirm they can read just fine) in a town where you don't live. Shout out to the Hillsborough Library for being helpful! And then you get back to the DMV and the woman who was "helping" you (that term is doing a lot of heavy lifting as she was no help at all) had to leave and run a personal errand and will be back later. It's absolutely absurd. The most ridiculous and inefficient example of government bureaucracy at work that I've seen in a very long time. read more

The closest experience to hell on earth. It doesn't matter when you go the wait will still be two hours. If you get there any time after noon you will probably be turned away as the wait will be longer than five hours and they close promptly at five o clock. If you're here with your friend or family member you are forced to sit in a separate room. I drove my friend here to get some simple stuff done, and we were told it would take 2 hours. I'm not a bad friend so I decided to wait it out in the other room. People sat us against the wall eating Big Macs and a toddler threw its toy around the room and feet of other patrons for the entire three hour wait. The staff are some of the most rude and unsympathetic people I've encountered. Be prepared to be treated like a dog.
