At the entrance, they have a small coffee shop that I have yet to try. On the sides, they have a few conference/group rooms (which tend to be booked anytime I go) and downstairs, they have additional tables. They also have ample parking near the upper and lower entrances.

I…read morehad to especially jump through some hoops when I wanted to research some journals in their Rare Books archived collection. I was a grad student at a different university -- so using the library required some form-filling. You have to lock your backpack away in a separate room and can only take pencil (no pens!), paper, and a laptop with you into the study room. My journals were old and stiff, so they gave me special paperweights (they don't look so 'special' -- more like felt blocks) to weigh them down with. Luckily, my materials weren't so old that I had to be supervised while reading them or use 'special' tweezers to turn the pages. If you take a moment to soak up the room, you can't help but be awed (I'm an admitted book geek, but still...). The room itself is beautiful, but there's also something thrilling about being in the presence of so many rare and ancient tomes locked away in cages. There are also underground archives, and the contents of these unseen rooms hearken a scene from The Historian (or, for you movie-going types, National Treasure). Of course, Wilson has other rooms that are less intimidating! Check out the NC writers section, which is set up like a museum.

This courthouse is a beautiful example of government interaction with the people "back in the day."…read more The Courthouse Square was once the center of community. It portrays a time when government was more accessible to the people, and people were more a part of government decisions. I love seeing these old courthouses. Many of them have lost their surroundings, but this one still has buildings around it. It makes for a living downtown area, heartening back to yesteryear. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Admission is free and there was not anywhere to leave a donation but they do have a notebook that you can sign in and share your thoughts. The notebook in the box was from April and there have been many visitors since then. The Village was created with stone from a local quarry. He quarried the stone himself. Henry Warren created this village when he was 72 back in 1968. He was battling cancer at the time. He was a retired tobacco farmer and created 27 buildings that are pretty tall, I'd guess 4-6 feet tall, out of stone. He selected each piece and constructed it all himself. He used white flint rock, quartz, brick, and cement to create this masterpiece. I like that he used other items in his work like door knobs, table legs, ceramic and glass. The art in the designs is remarkable. His workmanship needs to be applauded as his work is still standing after decades. The Village has a mill with water wheel, a school, a church, a theater, a water tower, a farmhouse, a doghouse, an outhouse, a motel, a general store, a jail, a library, a liquor store, and City Hall. He was working on the hospital when he died and his family completed that for him. He finished in 1972 and put up a plaque in the front that says, "Let me live in the house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Visitors are welcome to tour his creation at any time and for free. Children who came to visit would leave toys to enjoy the village so it was fun to see who was living in the village. Warren died at 84 years old back in 1977 but left behind his work of love for all of us to still enjoy. So if you get a chance, stop by and enjoy his work and take in the whimsy and feel the magic.

A drizzly Saturday turned out to be the perfect time to wander around the historic Guilford County…read moreCourthouse in Greensboro because I had the whole place to myself. I was able to walk the grounds, read every monument, and ever once feel rushed. Plus parking was super easy which is always a pleasant surprise in a downtown. The courthouse itself was built in 1918 and is a Neoclassical Revival landmark designed by architect Harry Barton, who left his fingerprints all over twentieth century Greensboro with a style that leaned into symmetry, stone and that confident civic presence counties loved to project in that era. Guilford County goes back much farther than the building, formed in 1771 from parts of Rowan and Orange Counties and named for Francis North, the Earl of Guilford, father of British Prime Minister Lord North. The county seat has not always been Greensboro, but it has been since 1808 when the legislature moved it to a more central location that made sense for a growing county. Greensboro itself carries the name of Nathanael Greene, the American general whose leadership at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse helped shift momentum in the Southern campaign of the Revolutionary War. Walking the grounds in the drizzle gave everything a calm, almost reflective feel, and the monuments scattered around the property tell a surprisingly rich story if you take the time to read them. By the time I finished circling the building, the mist had settled in just enough to make the courthouse look even more dramatic against he gray sky, the kind of scene that reminds you how much history is turned into these old county seats. They could definitely invest in some more comfortable seating in my opinion
