Though I hope you never have to make you way to the courthouse for any reason, but if you do...arrive early and park in the municipal lot about a block and a half away. (parking is only $2.00 for the first hour) compared to the parking lot across the street which is $8.00 for the first, maximum of $24.00
I was given a ticket just shortly after moving to North Carolina for having expired out of state tags. I explained to the cop the situation, (just moved here and stayed at friends along the way, but he wasn't having any of it).
regardless...i changed my tags over as soon as I got settled in and got a permanent address.
I arrived at the courthouse at 730am (the courthouse opens its doors around that time), and went through the metal detector. The staff was friendly when you enter and were actually pretty cordial. Once inside, the security lady pointed me to the right direction.
Got to the traffic room area where there was a big screen showing the 'hearings' for the day, and if your name is not on there, you'd have to go somewhere else. Luckily, my name was on the list. I jumped into the line that was forming in that room (around 20 people in front of me) and waited patiently. Around 8am, the security guard came over to give us an update that the Assistant DA would be arriving shortly and will be able to assist those in line who wanted to 'plea' down. The receptionist also arrived just a few minutes before the ADA did.
The receptionist person met had you show your citation, photo ID and then discuss with you whether you wanted to plea or go in front of the judge. If you wanted to see the ADA, you joined another line.
As it got to be my turn, i arrived up, moved quickly as I just had to show proof that I got my NC registration and moved up to the ADA line. The line moved quickly, as 2 ADA's were present to hear your issues.
The line moved so quickly that I was out of the courthouse by 840am! In addition, because it was just to show them proof of insurance and registration, there weren't any fees involved (In NY, they still charge you a processing fee).
I was ecstatic! Was very happy that the staff was very friendly and understanding of everyone's situations. This was, by far, the best courthouse experience i have ever had. (just hope to never have to go here again) read more
