Roy just reached out to me concerned with some of the feedback in my updated review from 2015. We discussed how I had to redo my plantings using cardboard as a weed block then mulch. The plantings we did in the rework are Pacifica friendly plants so they have taken off. If I had this to do over - hindsight being 20/20 I would have Nature Works do the hardscaping, drainage and irrigation. I would then have my local guy do the plantings and weed control and setup the drippers. Hardscaping, irrigation and the REALLY DIFFICULT part of the job .... 5 STARS - USE THESE PEOPLE!!!!! YES!!! Great communication and great team. Worth the money. Plantings - work with a local person who knows your microcilmate and knows local plants. Someone from Morgan Hill may not get what goes on in Pacifica ... so 1 star on the plantings. On a weighted scale 1 to 10 of what is worth what .... the hardscaping and slope management and wall building is a 9. The plantings is a 4. I was unhappy with the plantings side but it is not as hard to do as the other. When you do the math I upgraded them back to a 4 star overall. One more note - Roy and I talked on the phone and he did take a lesson from my guy who used cardboard as a weed block. My planting guy weed wacked and pulled weeds then poured down soil amendment. He covered it with brown cardboard and tacked it down with staples. He had to cut out places for plants. We used a string like mesh on steep slopes. Then we poured brown mulch over it all. It looked great and has kept *ALL* weeds down for a few years. It is projected to last 3 - 6 years then has to be redone in parts .... rake it, more cardboard, more mulch. Some weeds did come up in the holes in the cardboard ... as expected. Easy to manage. The cardboard gets soaked and decays with the soil. Nematoads and worms grow under it making a very healthy growing surface. The plants *LOVE it. Roy was appreciative of my sharing this with him as it may solve some of the problems he related to me with the weed fabric. I foresee them using this on jobs and getting better at planting. Roy and Nick and all the folks there care and work hard and are good at what they do. Nature Works did an amazing job with our backyard. We recently sold our home and the backyard was definitely helped the sales price. The team was very professional and I thought the price for the project was very reasonable. I'm looking forward to hiring them again for the new home that we've purchased. read more

Just to demonstrate how professional this company is, this was a personal message I received. Roy M. has sent you a message on Yelp: Your Review "Why are you doing this. You are a sorry piece of lying trash. You have never met me, You don't know me and after writing all these lies about me, trust me you don't want to meet me. I will be actively trying to find out who you are." Yes, Roy. You can argue that I wrote this and that you did not, in fact, email this to me. But the language and grammar are fairly consistent with all the replies you gave to several reviewers. A professional contractor would try to resolve these issues, not outright call his previous customers liars and provide excuses. read more

This is more of a 4.5-star review but Yelp required 4- or 5-stars. We used Natureworks to do our backyard and they were able to transform a complete dirt lot into a backyard oasis over the 5-month project that included the following features: * Large travertine paver patio and side walkway * Small travertine stepper patio * Inground trampoline * Three raised bed garden boxes with irrigation (each 4' x 8') * Lawn with irrigation * 15+ trees plus full landscaping with irrigation * BBQ grill island * Fire pit * Full-lighting Overall the crew was always a joy to work with and was always courteous and professional. The shining stars were Nick and Jeff. We threw a lot of things at them as we evolved the design of our backyard and they were always able and willing to try anything whether or not they had done it before. After the backyard was completed they were available to return and fix any little glitches that popped up here and there. We have lived with the completed backyard for a good 8 months now and have to say it is performing well and we absolutely love it. Through that experience we trusted them enough to hire them again for a complete redesign of our frontyard. That was a much smaller scale project that just took 10 days but we are pleased with the job they did. I would say overall they are an excellent combination of quality work / design sense at an economical price point. I did find myself often needing to do a bit of my own cleanup of excess little fragments of materials left around the project... but then again I am "OCD" and a perfectionist. The other recommendation I have is to get as much in writing as you can at the project outset, most importantly the detailed, itemized project scope / quote and expected timeline. They are very busy so you will be well served to nail down timeline expectations in black and white and then to the extent that you care you can appeal to the written plan to inquire on any project delays. read more

Took a totally empty space and made it into a useful space for entertaining and kid playing. The concrete patio looks AMAZING. Perfectly graded, lines totally straight, and it cured wonderfully. The cost per square foot was more expensive then other bids, but the quality and turnaround time on the concrete patio was worth it. They also installed new electrical, irrigation, and low voltage lighting. This was done very professionally, although I wish that someone had gone over with me how to use all the timers, etc. They planted new trees, bushes, and flowers, as well as installed a new lawn! These are all beautiful and they have a 3 month guarantee on it. Gopher wire and plant baskets were installed as well since we have those pesks around. The final product looks good, and will look great after the plants have time to grow. The downside of working with them was their unclear schedule to start the project, as well as some minor billing concerns that I had. The men who worked the job were polite and hardworking (although they left trash around until the project was finalized). The final clean-up was adequate. Nick spent time with me going over the plant details and was very knowledgeable about what would grow etc. Roy was a great salesman (initial bid and finalizing contract etc), but was difficult to reach on a regular basis, except when it was time for me to write the check. Jeff, who designed the yard, was very professional, timely, and a good listener. Although this was just the second phase of our backyard remodel (the first being removing an in-ground pool), the overall plan created by Jeff will help lead the way for our design for years to come. read more

Sorry all you Yelpers out there, didn't realize that Nature Works was in Yelp. Roy finished his work on our back yard about 4 years ago, it consisted of a pergola over a patio of pavers with a hot tub along the side. To be fair, we are happy with the way it turned out, but the journey through construction was terrible. One of the reasons why we decided on working with Nature Works was because they would also do the design as well as the construction. We started out working with Jeff Castro who was great to work with, patient and understanding. All good qualities since I changed my mind so much. Project was off to a good start, until it didn't start.....4 delays and 2 months later, construction began....after we paid $500 extra for expediting the permit. The construction site was a mess, deep post holes were left uncovered (we have a small dog), construction and lunch garbage littered our yard. My wife even saw one of the workers relieving himself on one of our bushes! They started to build a retaining wall extension that was not in line with the existing wall. (I had to tell Roy that the wall foundation was not in the right place). The rainwater drain was not connected. The hot tub they installed hung off the edge of the concrete pad by just over an inch (Roy tried to convince me that it was OK........he ended up fixing the problem). As other reviews have said, didn't see Roy much. I tried to set up weekly meetings with him....he missed more than half of them. He was always around when there was a check involved though. 5 stars for Jeff Castro 4-5 stars for the end result 1 star for all of required quality assurance time I had to put in 0 stars for peeing in my back yard 0 stars for Roy the owner Again, I was happy with the final result but it was a process that should not have been so difficult or consume so much of my time. If you do decide to go with Roy, you have to make sure you keep an eye on the project, ask a lot of questions, double check their work and above all, don't pay ahead of the project.....you will need the added incentive that goes with Roy needing a check from you. ROY THE OWNER IS A DEUSH BAG and a LIAR! He will rip you off, talk a big game, and never deliver. If I could give 5 Negative Stars I would! These people were horrible. I strongly recommend that you never do business with them ever! They will trash your house, leave their garbage, and once they have their money from you, its a fight to get them to finish the job! I had empty bags of concrete and their lunch garbage littered all over my yard. They then splattered concrete all over my house forcing me to repaint it. It took them months to do a simple job and the work they did had to be tore up and re done by another company. I ended up firing them part way through the job because or their attitude, poor workmanship and also because ROY kept on tacking on additional charges for things that were already included. The Owner is a jerk, and will twist things around to his favor. I cant stress enough that you should NEVER USE THESE PEOPLE!!! You will end up in small claims court !!! I hope that you will consider my advice, and should you choose these people, I'm sure I will see your negative review up here along with mine... They say there is a sucker born everyday, I was once that sucker, so learn from my mistake and DO NOT USE NATURE WORKS! THEY SUCK !!!! read more

Did a fairly large backyard project last year for $60K. Bad idea to hire these guys. They did not provide toilets to their men, and I had 4 men peeing on the exterior of my house in the first week until I complained. Roy was unapologetic. Roy asked for material payment in advance, claiming that it's California law, but there is no such law. They put few jokers on my project who he claimed were employees but I confirmed they were not employees. He did not pay his workers on time, so the workers appeared at my doorstep on the weekend asking for payment. I got lien waivers signed from Roy after that. Roy hardly supervised the project, the progress invoices were always full of surprises, and Roy never spared any opportunity to add costs to the project, like costs for extra grading, drainage, and demolition. At one point the men disappeared for 5 days without any communication. Took total 4 months to complete the project, and I was very unhappy with the entire experience. I paid so much, hoping that I will not have to supervise anything but I was wrong. I had to spend a lot of time with the folks working in my backyard. read more

Avoid like the plague. When Mark, the owner, signed our contract to do some landscaping, he went on and on about cusotmer service and quality work. As soon as the job began, there were communication problems between the installation team and the management who had failed to tell the workers what the contract indicated they would do. When we called Mark to let him know that the workers weren't aware of what was to be done, we got lots of excuses and explanations. When the job was completed they never returned to do the final sprinkler adjustment we had paid for. Within 2 months we began to have bare spots in the sod. I called and e-mailed Natureworks to ask for advice and they never responded. When Spring came, crabgrass appeared throughout the lawn; we had never had this weed in our yard in 30 years prior. In our opinion, the sod they installed was defective. I do not recommend using Natureworks under any circumstances. read more

We used Nature Works to landscape our backyard in 2010, which was not an easy job because of the steep slope. We are satisfied with the works done by Nick, Andy, and Roy. They are responsive to our needs and preferences. We feel that they really care about customers. Overall it was a good experience. Most recent update--our puppies chewed and destroyed the irrigation wires, Roy came by and fixed everything. I would say they have great customer service. read more

We hired NatureWorks to redo our overgrown 6k square foot backyard. The final result is now a safe and pleasant area to hang out. Specifically they: Completed a full demo, pulling out weeds, removing debris Installed 1k of automatic and drip irrigation/sod Graded the dirt and added a natural rock retaining wall Planted all new plants Veneered our front porch patio Minor cosmetic additions to our shed and hung lattice around a deck I was impressed with how hard and quickly their crew worked. They were very disciplined and honest. One of the workers actually found my husband's Android phone and returned it to us. Nick was helpful in leveraging his experience when considering different plant and design options for the yard. At the end of the project there was a slight issue with our sprinkler control program and within a few hours Roy had sent over a staffer to resolve the issue and everything has been running smoothly since. I'm very pleased with their services and will be hiring them again when we're ready to fix up our front yard and driveway. read more

I called nature works to redo my whole back yard. Put new turf, put new plants, new irrigation, new veg garden. The project was delayed quite a bit, and manager got very hostile towards us when we complained about project being late or a change in the bill. Anyhow, before project started a nice guy came and we worked together to make the flower list. When they finally started, the project was done in 4 days. They were pretty fast. The plants were almost exactly as we discussed, the turf looks nice, irrigation works fine, the veg box looks nice as well. Not sure where his many workers were going to the bathroom cause there was no port-a-potty. Also they are not very good at communicating. Emails were not always replied and phone calls were not always returned. At the end an OK experience. What remains to be seen is if the plants will grow and thrive and if the new grass will remain green (following the proper watering schedule of course). read more

For the third time I have had Nature Works do a major landscaping job at my home. This time they did the front yard which included designing, plant landscaping and hardscape. Once again I was absolutely delighted. NIck is a fantastic designer and knows both plants and design; he is great to work with.. Both he and the crew worked with me on the paver concept and came up with some wonderful solutions. The crew did a great job on all the work and everything was cleaned up very professionally at the end of the job. Cost estimates were spot on and realistic. I have had experience with both commercial contracting and construction as well as residential over the years. These guys are definitely on the very good side. read more

Hired these guys awhile back. They did a really good job and kept me informed all the way through. The most impressive thing was when I called back about some dead plants. Even though it was 3 months later, they responded quickly and sent someone out to replace them at no charge. That is unlike most of my previous contractor experiences. read more

This company put in a new fence and made a nice patio for me. They even fixed a broken gate latch, which wasn't in "the job description". They were pleasant to interact with, I have no complaints at all and would use them again. read more

Is this company perfect? No, but I'm so tickled we used them. We obtained quotes from 6 companies and found this company to be the lowest bidder. That's not the only reason we used them, however. We were charmed by owner Roy Mark's personality and knowledge. When we met his sidekick, Nick Libby, we knew we had made the right choice. Nick not only designed our yard (at no additional cost), he also took us to a nursery where we could look over the plants we desired. He literally held our hands, very patiently answered a whole bunch of questions every time we saw him, and guided us through the process as we were confused and overwhelmed with the project. Our yard is just beautiful. It's amazing what they did. And when a vine died a couple of months after being planted, it was replaced at no cost. Now the downside, the reason why 5 stars was not awarded. Emails/calls are not quicky returned. You learn to wait. And we did wait because they're top notch and wanted them. While they are busy, this is an area where improvement should occur. But I wouldn't hesitate to use them again. read more
