We had a leak in our front door and noticed Hopkins & Porter was a local DMV handyman business with…read moregood online reviews. They turned out to be a huge ripoff. Over the phone with them, we mentioned the leak, shared our ideas on some quick fixes such as sealing the bottom area around the door to see if that resolves the issue, and provided some photos that clearly showed the potential gaps to be sealed. We were communicated that Hopkins & Porter has a policy where they charge an upfront $150 fee that includes an inspection and where the balance is applied to subsequent time and materials work. We were led to believe that a technician would come, inspect the front door leak and some other home interior issues we had, and initiate some fixes. However, when the technician arrived, he only inspected the front door leak for 8 minutes, dismissed taking a look at our other issues, dismissed doing any quick fixes we had mentioned over the phone, but rather asked for the $150 check, and left. He did offer his thoughts on needing to replace the allegedly custom design door weatherstrip ($$$) and sealing a side of the door as well. That's fine but we didn't understand why he wasn't equipped to seal the door area as we discussed over the phone to see whether that would resolve our leak. After some email exchanges following the 8-minute inspection where we indicated this wasn't the job we signed on for, and Hopkins & Porter claiming they would only do things "the right way" (funny how that never came up in the initial phone call), trying to guilt-trip us for expecting an affordable solution, but at least offering to void our $150 check. We wouldn't have even engaged with this company if we knew they would just ignore everything we requested, take our upfront fee, and come up with a large estimate. After 2 days waiting for an estimate of the costs, we were fed up and asked that they go ahead with voiding our check, ending this debacle. Several weeks later, I took a look at my bank statement and was shocked that rather than voiding the check, they deposited my $150 check a few days after our last correspondence. It's disturbing that Hopkins & Porter resorts to taking advantage of potential customers by: - Charging $150 for an 8-minute "inspection" on an issue that was clearly shown in our photos, without fixing anything as we were led to believe - Parroting back potential fixes that we already mentioned when we shared the issue, without actually fixing anything - Claiming to tear up our check but not doing so, instead waiting several days later to cash it in To be honest, I've never seen such dishonesty in a local DMV handyman business.

We signed a contract with Graves to remodel our kitchen and both upstairs bathrooms. We were told…read more(AFTER we signed) that it would take 4-6 weeks for the cabinets to be ready, so this delayed our project until around the holidays. They were gracious enough, however, to replace our stove (which we needed for Thanksgiving) and fixed/patched a hole in the ceiling in advance of the project. So, that was nice. The problem, though, was that 4-6 weeks turned into FIVE MONTHS. We signed in October, and the project didn't start until March. I think in today's pandemic world, that would have been a lot more understandable given supply chain issues, but we were told this was a personnel issue on the contractor's side. Okay, whatever, we rolled with it. We lived with the old rooms for several years... what was a few more months? The remodeling went well, but instead of 6 weeks, it lasted 8 weeks. Again, not really our biggest gripe. We understand timing and how projects can get wonky sometimes. But, the problem here was, there was no communication from their side as to what the delays were and when we could expect work to resume. In fact, every update we received, it was after WE called THEM. We never received a proactive call from the company. Until... my first Yelp review. It was basically the same as above, with some errant backstory from another vendor that got confused into the mix. Then, we had a call immediately from the owner, within 24 hours of posting the review. So, why did our project manager use this same proactive outreach when working on our project? Why did it take a negative review to stir action? To their defense, half of the issues we pointed out (missing cabinet posts, leak from the commode, stain in the kitchen ceiling from leak/water damage, loose fixture in the bathroom). The other half (repainting the ceiling, loose bathroom faucet fixtures, loose commode not properly in place, dishwasher not attached to the counter and pulling on the paneling) were never addressed. Fast forward to today, and we have a leak (again) in the same commode because there is an unsecured PVC ring that was used to raise said commode for apparently no discernable reason. This has lead to a gradual leak that caused yet another hold in our ceiling, not to mention the cost of having the leak identified and resolved by an outside contractor. At this point, I'm not going to be pressured to recant my review. These are the facts and potential customers should be made aware of our experience. Each of the three remodeled rooms has lingering issues, some more severe than others. Aesthetically, the work was very well done, and we do enjoy the functional and well-working aspects. The parts that need addressing, however, have already cost us additional and unnecessary funds to rectify. This has been an overall unsatisfactory experience.

If I could give 0 stars I would. Lofft Construction was recommended to us by some neighborhood…read morefriends. Alex came to our house and gave us an estimate to repair our front steps and told us they would last a very long time. A few days later, his workers showed up, unannounced, asking what they needed to do. I told them I have no idea, and my husband is not home, and to coordinate a time with him. A few days later (on a Sunday), they showed up unannounced again! My husband was out again! They asked me to pick a paint color and I asked if that is included in the price we were quoted and they said they didn't know. As I was trying to figure that out, it came out that they don't think repairing the stairs is a good idea and they can't even guarantee they won't break again for even 3 days. I asked if it would be a lot more expensive to redo the whole thing and they said it would be exponentially more expensive. I told them we'll talk to Alex and get back to them. 30 minutes later, Alex calls my husband screaming at him! He told him that we shouldn't ask his contractors about prices and that he doesn't work that way and that we should find someone else to work with and hung up the phone on my husband! He was literally screaming at my husband on the phone. And then hung up on him. There are so many issues with our experience starting with the fact that the workers kept showing up without prior notice and asking a lot of questions as if they didn't know what they were supposed to be doing. And then of course the fact that he was trying to scam us into doing something that he knew might not even last the week. And then finally, calling my husband and screaming at him and hanging up on him because his workers were asking us a lot of questions?! It's just been an atrocious experience. I recommend avoiding him at all costs. UPDATE: Alex is now threatening my husband over text messages because of our review. We are just stating facts. He said we are inappropriate to contact him on a Sunday when it was his contractors who showed up at our doorstep, unannounced, on a Sunday, and we were just calling to clear things up with him because they had no idea what they were supposed to do and were asking me a lot of questions. He also accused us of trying to strike a deal with his subcontractors, something that didn't cross our minds for one second. We were just trying to figure out if the paint his contractors were making me choose was included in the estimate he provided us.
