Napa Humane Clinic - Thanks to Napa Humane, we won't be having Matilda clones.

I had my puppy spayed here in April. As a first-time pet owner whose family had only ever rescued…read moredogs before, I'd never had to deal with a pet getting spayed or neutered; it was always taken care of beforehand. We were very nervous before the surgery, and the quotes from other local vet's offices seemed overpriced. We got on Napa Humane's list and were originally scheduled for July, but they received a cancellation and got us in three months early. This wound up being a blessing because it gave me less time to worry about all the things that could go wrong during the surgery. On the day of the surgery, the receptionist was neither warm nor welcoming, which honestly added to the anxiety I was already feeling. However, the vet was fabulous- she was extremely knowledgeable about dogs in general, my dog's breed, and the many health issues they are prone to and did a wonderful job comforting my dog and me. I left her there feeling confident that the surgery would go swimmingly and that she was in good hands. She was, and it did! Something to note is that they don't provide post-surgical collars, so get one beforehand. We wound up getting a soft, inflatable one for Matilda, which was much easier to deal with than the traditional plastic cone. Napa Humane is committed to helping pet owners be responsible, and spaying and neutering are a big part of that. They offer an income-eligible program to residents of Napa, Lake, and Solano counties whose income level qualifies them for spaying or neutering at a significantly reduced cost. I really appreciate the fact that they do that, even though we did not qualify. I would recommend this clinic to anyone looking to get their pet spayed or neutered. They do a good job.

The reason i would NOT recommend this shelter is because i don't feel they were upfront with me about the dog i brought home. Firstly, He has fleas, and they didn't inform me. they did tell me he was given nexgaurd, (a medication for fleas, heart worms and ticks), and i would have to give him his second dose. but they told me that in succession with all of his other medical information, and i assumed it was completely preventative and something they put all new dogs on, just like the shots and microchip we were also discussing. not once did they specifically disclose the fleas at all. Second, i asked if he was house trained and they said as long as he has access to outside, he will go outside. that has turned out to be the farthest from the truth, he isn't house broken at all and training him for it has been going poorly. i was looking specifically for a dog that was already house broken. i do know dogs can have a regression after adoption, and have been patient but theres been 0 improvements no matter what i do for him. he seems to only want to go inside. and finally, he has a trauma with men that was severely downplayed during the adoption and i wasn't told until after we had traveled over an hour to come get him. i have been putting in the work for this dog, and i love him. he is worth it. but this is not at all what i prepared myself for, despite doing my best to spend months looking into the right establishments and breeds for our family and situation. this place has nothing but amazing reviews, and i thought if i had seen one like mine, i at least would have gone into it knowing what i do now. so if you've read this far, please take my experience into consideration when making your decision on what establishment you choose, and if it is this place, ask every question you can think of to make sure you don't leave feeling just a little deceived.

Odessa is one of the real dog saints in our county (we are so lucky to have a group of these). She…read moreworks with most of the other local shelters/rescues in the area to save small dogs of all ages and conditions....as she has space available. I have known Odessa for years and have so much respect for her incredible personal commitment to dog rescue. Most of the dogs 'roam' freely in her house, learning to get along with other dogs and with people. Puppies (and moms) stay in the puppy palace (a charmingly converted and furnished garage space). Rescuing and adopting dogs is very hard and very expensive work, since many dogs who were neglected or abused require a lot of love, medical care, and training. Please take any 'negative' reviews with a big grain of salt. All of us who have to deal with the public understand how unreasonable and uncharitable some people can be. This is a truly extraordinary woman who makes great sacrifices to rescue and place dogs in the best possible homes. It's an uphill battle with so many people allowing their dogs to breed and dumping them on rescue. And with some adopters/lookers who can be disrespectful of the process around placing dogs. Very few of us could do this work day in and day out with no reward other than seeing dogs go to the right guardians. Thank you to everyone who supports and adopts from rescue, saves lives, and appreciates those doing the really hard work. And please consider fostering a little dog if you can. It's a rewarding experience being part of the pipeline to forever homes.
