A rainy day calls for going out for breakfast, and in this case, it was Nana's. We were staying at an Airbnb nearby and our host recommended this place, so we decided to try it out. The GPS led us to a parking lot, with a good number of spots and Nana's was 20 steps away. They do have a patio with a few tables but because it was raining, we went straight inside. When we arrived, there were only a couple parties seated, but by the time we were mid-way through our meal / leaving, the place was packed. Our server helped us with understanding some of the items on the menu and also warned us about some of the iteme they didn't have, like pepperoni, mushrooms, and donuts. With that in mind, we ordered risotto balls to start and the pesto egg and cheese sandwich (baked fresh eggs, pesto, cheddar cheese, lemon aioli, brioche roll) and Dijon and lemon chicken salad sandwich (slow roasted chicken thighs, lemon aioli, herbs, local greens, pickles, and side of fries) for the main meals. The Yaupon iced tea caught our attention since it has indigenous tea with rotating fruit fusion so we ordered one just to try it. The risotto balls came out a little sooner than the other items. We loved the crispy outside, but not a huge fan of the inside since it was mostly risotto with not enough cheese or something to glue it all together. The sauce tasted like a fancy marinara - it was tart, lightly sweet, but a tad acidic and herby too. In our minds, we imagined our main plates looking differently, but I think it was mostly because we didn't do a good job of reading the menu. The pesto sandwich was good. The eggs reminded us a lot of a quiche-spongey and light. It did not have a strong pesto flavor. The roll seemed homemade; it was good and airy. The Dijon lemon chicken salad sandwich was okay. The chicken thighs chunks were tender, and I could definitely taste the pickles, lemon, and Dijon. I think it needed more salt or even something sweet to balance out the acidic flavors. The bread was well toasted. The fries were delicious with the right amount of salt, crispiness, and variety. The iced tea was not our favorite as it tasted overly sweet which might've removed any fruit flavor. Donuts are good, baked goods are really good as well. The atmosphere is cute and the service is good. It was a little pricey, which is my one negative. Today was my third time dining at Nanas. the 1st couple of times the service and food was okay. Today I brought my son there, first time for him and I told him that food was good there. Unfortunately upon entering we must have waited to be seated for at least 15 minutes or more. But that wasn't the worst. I just had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and I was walking with a cane. Noone acknowledged us or said someone will be right with you! Luckily there were a couple chairs in the waiting area and I sat!Finally got seated, still waited for someone to take our order. We ordered and my son ordered a coffee which came out about 10 minutes later. waitress brought us wrong order. The waitress said to us it's a little crazy today, that's not our problem. We were a party of 3 and arrived at the peak breakfast time on a sunny summer Saturday morning. We were told by the hostess that a large party had just arrived and warned that service could be a little slow. She suggested we order asap to avoid any delays. This alone warrants 5 stars! We sat outside and although it is in a parking lot - they've done an outstanding job of making it comfortable and aesthetically pleasing. Then there was the food. We did both a dinner and a breakfast for our group and the owner was so helpful in putting together the menu. Everything was made with fresh local ingredients and each dish felt really thoughtful and special. Nothing generic, nothing that felt like it came out of a bag. You could just tell the care that went into it. Everyone enjoyed all the dishes and were surprised that this was catering! So easy to work with start to finish. Drove 2 hours to make it down here, and we were not disappointed. Parking lot available right outside (free) and as we entered staff greeted us and we were seated right away. (3pc per order) The Caeser salad is a starter size and the lady liked it and ate it up like a rabbit! We also ordered a sweet and spicy roni pie. Now the sizing does not mean how many inches in diameter the pizza is, but rather Small = a neopolitan thin style Large = a thick Sicilian style We opted for the small style. Our staff ladies explained it to us before ordering! It was cooked well, dough was good to eat through the crust. The roni had a kick, i actually think if they used the seasoning from the risotto balls on top it would elevate it even more. We asked for parm, hot red peppers which they make in house and DOES have a kick, as well as in house fried crispy garlic in lieu of garlic powder. We were hosting some out-of-state guests and starving in the mid-afternoon. Nana's had great reviews, and the menu looked like it had something for everyone in our small party of 4. When we arrived, we were seated promptly but handed only "happy hour" menus. These are much abbreviated versions of their full menu, and the only thing we found that sounded appetizing were the burgers and the fries with interesting flavor combos (one was kimchi, one was pepperoni and parsley). We found the fries well prepared but not tasting of the advertised flavors. The burgers, served on Portuguese muffins, were nearly tasteless, and my husband's burger was on the rare side of medium. Service was friendly but lackadaisical at best. As it is a small space, we watched as our server chatted with various other staff with her back to all of her tables for an extended time. One of my top 3 favorite pizza places. And not just excellent pizza, literally everything on their menu is delicious, from donuts and coffee to chicken. I do not live in the area but I frequently make special trips down just to get their pizza; classic white and pepperoni. You can't beat the sourdough or the grassfed dairy/beef ingredients and how much better the superior ingredients taste. They know what they're doing and they do it well. The potatoes were undercooked, the coffee was lukewarm and the toast wasn't buttered. There was no salt and pepper on the table which was much needed. I asked my server for ketchup. As I was waiting I saw her waiting on another table then socializing with her boyfriend and giving him a big kiss when he left. Can't say enough great things about Nana's Westerly. They deserve 10 and then some for service and food quality. Menus is ever changing with the seasons. Wine menu is small but ultra well curated with many small production, organic/bio/natural wines from small producers who care. The same goes for the ingredients they utilize to create each wonderful dish. Small local farmers who respect the land they use to grow. The pizza is amazing and that's coming from a person who lives in New Haven. This is not New Haven style apizza and I'm tremendously grateful. They are their own style of pizza with equally interesting and well paired toppings. The level of service and hospitality are elevated beyond that which you would find in bigger cities yet packed into a small nook of a space that compliments the New England small town feel of downtown Westerly much like every component and element of food they use to create each dish. Food - 4 stars Service - 5 Ambiance - 3 There are some great dishes. They excel with their baked items, like pizza. There's an emphasis on fermentation, which works better in some dishes than others. Pasta dishes have been very good here. I didn't love the smash-burger because the double patties were much too thick and very salty. The fish and chips were good, but the fries needed to be crisper. We've been to Nana's 5 or 6 times and generally liked everything with some dishes standing out, and others lacking a bit. Service is always excellent and pleasant. Ambiance is pretty nice, but it's very small inside and can feel cramped when busy. The bar seating is limited and can use some better lighting. It feels somewhat dark and cold. I really like this restaurant, even despite the occasional misstep. When they get something right, it's great. Slightly more consistent dishes and minor changes in ambiance would easily make for 5 stars. read more

I think I found my breakfast spot. Everything I had today was amazing. I'm a bit ashamed of myself because I don't think I caught our waitress's name but she was sweet and attentive. We started with our breakfast beverages and I got my large earthenware mug of chai. Hubby had a nice strong coffee. He ordered the nana's breakfast platter. Comes with 2 eggs, 2 slices of toast, 2 slabs of bacon cooked 2 different ways, and a deep fried potato patty. I ordered the SeaCoast Mushrooms over whipped ricotta on a slice of toast. Everything was topped with an egg with crispy garlic garnish. Wow! The flavors! The ricotta was so smooth and creamy like a crème fraiche but tasty like cream cheese. I've had many dishes topped with crispy fried garlic but this was among one of the tastiest and strongest tasting fried garlic that I've tasted. Hubby also loved his meal. The real star of the show was the chia pudding. Our waitress was super thoughtful and split the pudding into two dishes. Oh my goodness it was so delicious. Hubby ate 75% off it before he even touched his breakfast platter! It's creamy oat milk, perfectly soaked chia seeds, it was topped with oatmeal and toasted seeds. Then it's finished with fresh fruit and a drizzle of fermented honey. Not too sweet at all. Just perfect. Today it was topped with paper thin slices of crisp apples. Really disappointed yesterday. Went in on a lunch for Saturday. I had a small margarita pizza, wife had Chicken Caeser had a local cola and the wife a local micro beer. Salad had barely enough dressing to even taste and some of the veggies seemed freeze dried like cardboard and chicken was tough with no salt and pepper on table. My simple plain Margarita pizza had a tiny piece of mozzarella on each slice, and the rest of the slices had an overindulgent amount of sauce covering the pizza dough. Honestly, it was like they took standard pizza sauce and piled it on and put a sporadic amount of cheese just to try and make it a pizza. Honestly, ate one or two slices and had them throw out the rest. Could not even take it home to eat. The wife took home 75 percent of the salad and remade it at home to finish it off. I would have told the staff it was really bad if they had asked. The worst part was that our bill for this great food was $62 with tip. Live local and won't be back. Tough stuff went there 6 months ago had the same pizza order and I LOVED it. Man, what a difference. It just wasn't made correctly. Hope it goes better for them going forward as I want to business locally to succeed, if they charge this much and this is the end result, we just didn't get our share out of the deal. read more
