EDIT: so, just a heads up (and I've attached the screenshots) the owner of this place is out of her mind. She obviously can't take criticism, and will resort to harassment if she doesn't agree with your review. I have talked to other Yelpers who have had the same experience. This is completely unacceptable from ANY business owner or person. If I didn't like this place before, I absolutely HATE it now. Save your money for one of the MUCH better and much more professional nail salons in Des Moines. This place is a joke. Yeah, I gave this place another shot and I just can't do it. The first time I came, the woman doing my nails seemed really peeved and annoyed. She was very aggressive with how she did my nails, and when she waxed my eyebrows (which are naturally thick) she kept pointing out how thick they were. I told her that's how I liked them, and would just like a little clean up. Instead she made them INCREDIBLY thin, and not to mention uneven. I've never had such a bad eyebrow wax in my life! I also got a pedicure the first time I went in. The manager (I think that's who he was) sat down and started talking to me. At first I thought this was just a nice gesture. Ended up being him telling me my husband (who is a pilot) probably cheats on me, and I on him (I'm a flight attendant). Uhhh... Thanks? Even though completely inappropriate, I've just moved to the area and hoped I just had a bad first experience, so I decided to come back for a fill.. Bad idea. The manager was actually nice this time and kept his inappropriate comments to himself, so I felt a little bit better coming back. But I did have the same nail lady. Even more rude, even more aggressive, and even more nasty than the first time. I asked her if I could look at the gel colors. She threw the basket at me then started telling me to pick from the selection she had at her desk... Um, can't you just get up and grab the color I actually want? I don't recommend coming here at all. I am a very loyal customer when I receive good service, but I think this was my last time here. read more

It's to bad that my review has resorted to now harassing me... about my review. Let it go. Sometimes people aren't happy and they then Yelp about it. I'm not trying to "ruin" anyone's business. I just happened to have had a bad experience on the day I visited, which is the ENTIRE point of Yelp. I'm glad you have new ownership and maybe things are better now, but my review still stands as that was my experience on the day I visited. The actual mani/pedi was fine, it was everything else from a customer experience that I had a problem with. Oh, I definitely do not work for Yelp, although I'm sure it would be awesome if I did! I came from out of town for a wedding and went to Nails and Sandals for a manicure. I chose to get french tip gel nails. The staff was friendly but did a shoddy job on my nails! I didn't comment during the manicure about the not trimming/pushing back my cuticles because I had already commented on something only to be told they "weren't done." About 3 hours after the manicure, I examined my nails to find that the tips (for added length)they put on under the dip were not even attached to my nails. So there is a gap under the nail! I didn't have time during my visit to return to the salon but I wish I had made the time! After only 4 days, my nails look like crap; separating around all the edges, stuff stuck between the artificial nail and my nail, chunks of the nail breaking off, etc! As I stated before, the staff was friendly and chatty but I would never spend $48 to get my nails done there again!!! Extremely disappointed! read more

Worst set of nails I've ever gotten. Have been back 2 times after because SIX nails have broken. Never will I go back here. Just broke another one. They expected me to pay for the fixes too! I didn't and I'm so glad I didn't. Ridiculous. read more

UPDATE: After writing my review the owner sent me a nasty message on yelp (attached a pic down below) I don't know who in their right mind would own a business and talk to her customers like that. I highly recommend driving the extra mile to find a different place to get your nails done and avoiding this place at all cost. Both times when I went in there there was not one other person in the salon and now I see exactly why. Rude staff, PSYCHO owner and they're not good at doing nails either. Can't wait to bring my business to a salon that deserves it. The WORST nail salon in all of Des Moines I would NEVER go back there or recommend it to anyone. The woman that did my nails was beyond rude and unprofessional. She kept asking me if i had cash on me and I repeatedly told her no and she rolled her eyes every time i said no. She was super aggressive while filing my nails, and kept trying to shove her gel nail polish down my throat with a "free design" for 15 dollars more.She "didn't want my wet nails to get ruined" when she was all done but was basically shoving me out the door when it was time to pay so she actually OPENED MY PURSE and STARTED GOING THROUGH IT looking for my wallet and asked me AGAIN if i had cash. I got acrylic tips on Sunday and by Monday morning one already came off. They gave me a hard time about fixing it when I went back in Monday afternoon but they fixed it. It is now Tuesday night and 7 of my nails have fallen off. Completely ridiculous, I would stay far away from there. read more

Good dip powder service with lots of colors, I got in quickly on a Saturday.

i love to have my pedicure done..and since i have bad back.. doing the job my self is out of the question.. woo...so i end up in nail salon every few weeks.. as Always ..striving for the good ones out there... yesterday ..i ran into a nice lady while shopping for candles...the colors on her teo nails were so bright and the mobern flowery design on her bigtoe..was very appealing... without any hesitant...i walked towards her and complemented her on the beautiful work they have done for her...of course i asked where she had got it done!!! she replied happily!! oh..its " Nail & Sandles "...i said; oh thanks, i will make sure they know that you sent me.. today...i just get done with my pedicure...and welll!! i got the whole work..the aroma while kim is giving my feet and legs a message..filled the salon..and while my back and neck was getting message by thier very new message chairs...and the music playing in the background...i really felt while resting my eyes..that i am on my best vacation spots...and the music playing while getting nice message on kaanapali beach in Maui...where we were on our honey moon in Maui...the smell of that fresh lotion they were using...and the relaxation did really carried me back to paradise... needless to say!!! i am their new customer for very long time hopefully!!!! well!!..back at home..my husband gave me a nice complement and made him happy to see me coming home very happy and relaxed... ladies!! ..you will enjoy it.. to...just look at my foot and you will be the judge... read more

Super pleased with the service. Stoped in on a whim for a pedicure and the guy doing my feet was fantastic. Awesome scrub and massage, almost fell asleep as it was so relaxing. Halfway through decided to look at gel colors as was almost time for a manicure. Another gentleman brought me colors and as I finished looking he brought even more. Awesome color selection, not only standards and glitter but chrome and cat eyes too. Nails look great and toes are wonderful. The other guy did my nails and was efficient and great at his job. It was a weekend, so I called ahead to see if I could grab a last minute appointment- very accomodating! I got a gel manicure here, and it was done so well that two weeks later, I don't have a single chip and the mani is growing out. My cuticles were cleaned well- this part I'm usually pretty picky with, and I was happy with the result. I also got a nice little back massage at the end. A thorough job was done, but I was in-and-out efficiently. read more

I love this business, the owner & employees. I have never had a bad experience since Megan took over the business. I usually tell her to do whatever. I get the powder on my nails & shellac on my toes. I wear a leg brace & my toes look good for 4 weeks or longer. if I want a certain color, she shows me the different shades or if something new powder comes out she shows me or a new product. They all are so very helpful. read more

Was in Des Moines on a business trip and was in dire need of a pedi and found this place on Yelp. So glad I did. Walked in an was immediately welcomed and seated in a massage chair for my pedi. They did a fantastic job and took great care of me. I even got a shoulder massage at the end. I highly recommend this place and will be back next time I am in town. read more

One basic pedicure took 1.5 hour. The lady picked at my cuticles so much she made one toe bleed. I still have dead skin on the corner of my nails on both Big toes. Also, they did not shave off the dead skin on the sides of either big toe. My heels are still rough. They switched workers when it was time to paint my toes. The guy didn't change his gloves between client (and they weren't clean, had bright pink dye of them.) Will not return. read more

My family's experience at Nails and Sandals ended on a sour note. I paid for 3 pedicures, and they charged me more for tax. I have never been charged tax at any nail salon in my life. Still, I tipped more than 20%, and the woman was extremely rude about that! To top it off, they gave us a stamp card with only 1 stamp on it. When we pointed out that we had paid for 3 services, they said it was their policy to stamp only once per card. We will NEVER be returning here. read more

Great manicure! The place is clean and Be gave me one of the best manicures I've had....and the neck massage while I was drying was a plus!

I walked in on Sunday with my 9 years old grand daughter to do pedicures. Our nail tech were both very nice but we were kind of upset when one of the lady there was trying to push us to do deluxe pedicure. I believe she is the manager. Our bills costed $90 sth. We tipped the nail tech cuz they did such great jobs. After leaving tips, the total is $102. Holly crape!!! The manager said your total $40 and your 9 years old is $40 too. I've now tried this place twice and I'm not impressed at all. I asked for a manicure and got my nails dipped. The first time, my cuticles were not pushed back and she didn't cut my nails to even lengths. The second time, I went with a friend. The guy taking care of my friend left in the middle of her manicure to do a pedicure and turned her over to someone else. The woman doing my nails pushed my cuticles back with her own nail and didn't use a tool! This is what i paid over $35 for? They also had a puppy running around the salon which peed on the floor while I was there. read more
